I usually just use my wristwatch and glance at it from time to time. Sometimes I set the timer on my watch, or timer on my mobile phone on vibrate and keep it near my leg. I also have used a kitchen timer which works well if you keep it far enough away from you not to be startled by the bell. A long time ago I made a cassette tape with chimes and clacks to allow me to prepare to sit, sit, prepare to get up, get up, do some khinhin (sp? - Japanese-style meditative walking), and then repeat the cycle - but I don't use it anymore. I downloaded the Mindful Clock DKotschessa recommended. It seems to work great. You can set it for any meditation periods and khinhin periods you'd like. The chime is pleasant and gentle. I haven't sat with it yet but will later today. I really like this type of posting and responses. That is postings that have to do with practical issues surrounding practice, as contrasted with doctrinal or ideological issues. I like both but seem to get more out of the practical issues.
