SO... turns out it may be the system environment that Zenoss is running in.
My systems engineer had me set it up in a OpenVZ container running in Gentoo. -- this seems to be leading to more problems as the Zenoss roll out is done. A seperate installation from the same tar file running on Centos 5 (mysql 5.0.22, python 2.4.3-19) seems to be running without a problem. Events are acknoledged correctly, only one clear message is sent.... seems to be some sort of OpenVZ interference in every problem I've come across.
