Nope, not even close. I expect much more from a package like this. I don’t
want to EVEN go into the garbage that uSoft has foisted on the public, called
an OS and has even had the audacity to charge money for! Crap, they should pay
US for the beta testing!

Did I say anything about NOT wanting to work and learn?

Hmmm.. Perhaps a bit of background is in order.

I'm an hourly schmuck, an electronics tech by trade. I work on everything from
PBX systems, fiber optics, microwave radios on mountain tops, SCADA, Wifi, 2
way radio, process controls... You name it, I've probably messed with it, but I
am NOT a programmer or systems analyst.

Most of my knowledge has been gained by running into a problem and learning how
to fix it.

I'm in an odd position at our company. I do about 95% of the work on our
network and Cisco gear, and I'm one of the folks that the IT department calls
when they either want to modify, add to the network or have a problem and want
me to packet sniff and see what is going on.

However, I am -not- in IT.

I do work closely with our IT department, and they've actually been the ones to
foot the bill for my network analysis and CCNA training. Why are they paying
for me to get training? Because I have the background in networking and
familiarity with Cisco gear that most of the other folks in IT did not. I was
the logical choice until they could get some more folks in IT ‘up to speed.’

Our current network monitoring system is pretty rudimentary, as we’re using
the Kiwi tools stuff. (Cat tools, and their syslog monitoring utilities.)

I've been looking for the last few years at all kinds of different netmon
packages, and when I first read about Zenoss, I had all kinds of bells going
off! Man, this looks COOL!

What is –not- said in all the nifty screenshots of networks, charts and other
cleanly packaged reports can be boiled down to this:

Zenoss is the kind of package that needs the administrator to be trained in
Linux/Unix, scripting, Python, etc. and pretty much requires that individual to
work on it full time for at –least- a few days straight to get the kinks out.

To someone that HAS the programming background, they can just dig right in and
with a few keystrokes say “Aha! Gotcha! Somebody flipped a comma and a
bracket in this query..” (or whatever. You get the idea.)

Like I said in my other message, it’s pushing me to learn. (And that’s a
good thing.)
