currently 5 vendors used in the 9 provinces. As you can imagine, there are huge inter-operability problems between the different provinces - most vendors claim HL7 compatability; however currently no two provinces' HIS are 'talking to each other'.
You are learning the hard way that here no such thing as HL7 compatibility.
There are moves afoot to establish a MPI - master patient index, which should help this situation.
I am afraid that it will not add any significant help.
My presentation to the DOH found some support for Care2x. If we can develop an ARV module quickly for Care2x, we could find ourselves a lot more support.
And what are the specifications to the ARV module?
Could you tell us where do they fit in the WHO's "Chapter D. Health Services Applications Functional Specification" (from:
http://www.virtual.epm.br/material/healthcare/frame1.htm ). This manual has page numbers and numbered items. please refer to them while describing the wanted specs.
> Are there any guidelines for coding modules?
If they exist they are not readily available yet.
At this stage we are trying to spec guidelines for the database structure itself: table and field naming conventions, primary tables (PT), associative tables (AT), primary keys (PK), foreign keys (FK), relations, etc.
And one other thing, at this time you will not be able to make Care2x work over any serious (read reliable or industry grade) database managing system (DBMS). Although the system has the potential to work with other DBMS nobody was able to document it sufficiently to permit other people to port it to other DBMS (namely Oracle, IBM DB2, os postgreSQL).
When you think of the more than 120 tables which Care2x has to deal with, you start to realize the problem. At this time we are stuck with MySQL.
So for now I would not bet my professional reputation advising a government to move into it do deal with critical clinical data... and dealing with AIDS is certainly critical!
But you may rest assured, there are pretty clever coders in this project and I am sure that once those glitches get solved they will able to code almost anything.
You may also have noticed that the Care2x project concept is secure and robust although not yet modular. But it is quickly evolving.
These are interesting times for Care2x - everyone is doing a great job!
Indeed they are.
