-Caveat Lector-
My parents had a pit bull for almost 15 years. She never bit anyone, but
she did scare a few. She was the best and most intelligent dog I have
ever seen. She was great with children. So gentle and patient. But she
could also bark and growl at strangers if she thought it necessary.
Our next door neighbor was a veterinarian. He was great friends with
Ginger and she often would go to their house to visit. One day my dad
was in the car with Ginger and the vet came over to him and said: "you
know that Ginger knows me and we're friends, but I want to show you
something. He put his hand into the car and Ginger started growling. He
explained that pit bulls are very protective and you must be aware of
this. Once the UPS guy delivered a COD package to our house. My mom was
sitting at the desk writing the check when she invited the UPS guy in
since it was cold outside. The minute he stepped in the door Ginger
started to growl, even though she knew the guy. My mom told her it was
all right and she stopped growling.
Perhaps once, the pit bull reputation helped me out. I had taken Ginger
with me to play soccer. Afterwards I threw a ball for her for a little
while. In the meantime it got dark and two black guys came by. The field
was in the hidden from the street and all my friends had left. These
guys may have been all right. I don't know. But the last time I had been
in a similar situation, I had ended up with a knife placed to the back
of my neck. When they asked about my dog, I did not hesitate to tell
them it was a pit bull and when they asked if it were mean, I told them
that she was a friendly dog, but I wouldn't want to be anyone who
attacked me in her presence. I did not have any trouble that night.
