Sure, it does : I'm a fan of the performance thing (even if I wouldn't 
have created yet another project for that), and I'll participate and 
propose tasks for students, for a lot of good reasons.

Now, to justify what I do, my idea is :

1) short term  : make it work with the solution I pasted

As you probably know, I'm working on a 7-12 years version of OOo 
(without Base nor Math, light, for all ports), and Fun is mandatory.

That's why I'd like to use .png for using another splashscreen, really 
Fun. The splashscreen is the first feeling of the user, and children are 
extremely sensible with that. Maybe a bad reason, but waiting, this make 
me understand more OOo code, so, all in all, this cannot be bad ;)


2) middle/long  term : write (help to) native code to improve 
performance with you.
