If you are just using just BIOS's drive lock password feature, the drive will lock after three password failures, and requires a power off/on to reset the FDE drive.

If one is using a management software for the FDE drive, one can choose from multiple types of responses to a brute force attack. In addition to drive locking after some number of password failures, it can be made so that the password becomes disabled (requiring a "administrative" password that is more complex) or wipes the drive clean.
