You're correct, I didn't. They're sort of both: they are on the local machine, but on a shared external drive 'outside' that has to be accessed via Parallels.
You may have put your finger on it, as the version of Parallels I'm using doesn't seem to like external drives much, often falling over with fallacious permissions issues (not the problem here, but does manifest itself in OS X virtual machines.
