There are some oddball network issues that can cause this. Someone out there in 
framers may have the incantation needed to leave them out on the network and 
yet get them to load at an acceptable speed.

It's not a memory size issue with the VM, as upping it from 4 GB to 16 GB 
didn't affect the loading speed.

Tomorrow I'll try relocating the JPEGs to a folder local to the Windows VM.
