Sometimes the former is the best way to achieve the latter (smile).

I have Thunar installed with USE='-udev', but I also have Gvfs installed
& 'emerge -cpv gvfs' tells me it's needed for Thunar.
My conclusion is that this dependency is absolute
& that's confirmed by looking at the ebuild itself,
which says  GVFS_DEPEND=">=gnome-base/gvfs-1.10.1" .
