I'd recommend the Tokina 400/5.6. It's relatively inexpensive, fast enough for general use, and decent quality. The woodpecker I shot this past weekend was out @ 200mm. http://www.brendemuehl.net/images/AWalkInThePark041506/ And the bird was only about 15 ft. (5 meters) away. Given the cropping, even 400mm is sort of minimal.
