Quoting John Coyle <jco...@iinet.net.au>:

Reviews in our local serious computer magazine, 'Australian Personal Computer', heartily endorse W8 for tablets, but suggest staying away from it for desktops, and not highly recommended for laptops. The biggest problem seem to be it is essentially touchscreen-oriented, and that's an issue with most desktop users - I certainly would not want to have to stretch out some 60-70cm. to touch my monitor to make things happen! It is possible to switch to the classic interface, but you have to do it on
every reboot - it doesn't stay set.

Yeah, but third party developers can take care of that problem.

When MS dropped the classic start menu from Win 7 (and unlike Vista didn't allow an option for users to drop back to the classic interface), the absolutely wonderful and free 'Classic Shell' appeared within a matter of months. I've been using it since I got my Win 7 machine and have never needed to look at the bizarre Win 7 menu.

Classic Shell now supports Win 8 so I assume it will enable booting straight to the classic interface in that OS as well.
