That sounds odd, Brian - I have a Start button and menu on my W7 -64bit, and
I don't recall using
third-party software to set it up!  Apart from cosmetic changes, it's
exactly the same as my XP
machine's Start design.

Yeah, but third party developers can take care of that problem.

When MS dropped the classic start menu from Win 7 (and unlike Vista didn't
allow an option for users
to drop back to the classic interface), the absolutely wonderful and free
'Classic Shell' appeared
within a matter of months.  I've been using it since I got my Win 7 machine
and have never needed to
look at the bizarre Win 7 menu.

Classic Shell now supports Win 8 so I assume it will enable booting straight
to the classic
interface in that OS as well.
