Getting the ACCMAIL FAQ

Minor Subscription Changes
Hello ACCMailers ... This is a another follow-up to the discussions on spam and list moderation (last message was Spams + Viruses, 30 June 2002). The changes I made reduced the torrent of spam, but did not stop it entirely. It seems the Listserv spam filter does not work effectively on spam that uses non-English character sets, so I am still seeing a fair amount of spam from Korea (which I can't read) and Turkey (mostly porn). So I have read through the most recent documentation, and consulted others who are more familiar with this new version of Listserv ... and I propose what I think should be a final solution. In fact, I have just done it ... TWO CHANGES * All subscribers (except those listed as 'owners') now have the 'REVIEW' flag set. That means your posts must be sent to a moderator for approval, just as before. * Only subscribers may post. Messages from anyone who is not a subscriber will be rejected. This is the key change that should stop *all* spam permanently. As far as I know, nobody reading this will notice any difference at all -- all messages will be moderated, and you will still be protected from spam and viruses. The impact on subscribers should be zero, but the benefit to moderators should be substantial. However, if anyone finds they are inconvenienced in any way, please contact me off-list so I can investigate :- -- szs `AT` szs.net Memo: Many ACCMAIL questions are answered in Gerald Boyd's http://www.expita.com/ ~~~ ACCMAIL Info (automatically generated) ~~ To UNSUBscribe: Send UNSUBSCRIBE ACCMAIL to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To get the ACCMAIL FAQ: Send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and enter only this line in the BODY of the note: send usenet/news.answers/internet-services/access-via-email ~

Where We Are

Re: problems posting to ACCMAIL
Hi ACCMailers ... I think this discussion is beginning to drift off-topic, and we should not be talking about the respective merits of UUCP and other internet protocols. (By the way, there is an excellent mailing list for such matters at http://www.postel.org/mailman/listinfo/internet-history/ ) However, I will add one observation of my own. On several occasions, my posts to the AOL listserv (as subscriber and as moderator) have been rejected. To have them accepted, all I have had to do is send to the listserv in lower case, ie: as [EMAIL PROTECTED]not as [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- szs `at` szs `dot` net ~~~ ACCMAIL Info (automatically generated) ~~ To UNSUBscribe: Send UNSUBSCRIBE ACCMAIL to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To get the ACCMAIL FAQ: Send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and enter only this line in the BODY of the note: send usenet/news.answers/internet-services/access-via-email ~

ACCMail FAQ Questions

Gerry Boyd, the current ACCMail FAQ maintainer, has already stated that he intends to retire -- in effect he already has retired. I doubt if the FAQ will disappear on 3 September, even from the mit.edu site, but it will of course become outdated -- unless the work is carried on by another person or persons. The documents on expita.com are part of Mr Boyd's own website. I guess they will disappear quite soon. Get them now, while you can. 1. Regarding the King James Bible search, is there also a similar way to search the holy books of other religions? 2. Is t-mail also able to translate web pages. 3. Can one search the Britannica or any other encyclopedia for information on events or people's names or famous people in a way similar to the dictionary described in the FAQ? 4. How do you do what I call third party conversion with the PDF convertion service? 5. I understand there is a text to html convertion service but what about the reverse as I often find html a problem? 6. Where can I find out about the E-mail to snail mail services in different countries? I don't have answers right now to those specific questions. Updating the FAQ
On 2 Sep 2004 at 17:35, Frits Westra wrote: I'd rather not translate the current FAQ with superseded information. It's unclear to me whether you'll ask Gerry for permission to edit the English version. Or do you have other intentions with it? You are right -- version 10 really is old. Gerry has either retired completely or is on a very long bike ride. We can't contact him. But, while I was checking through some old emails from two years ago, I found at least one that clearly stated his intention to relinquish all reponsibility for the FAQ. I had forgotten about that, because at the time I agreed only to take on admin of this list. I would ask him if I could -- but all mail to expita.com bounces, so I can't ask him, and now I don't think it is necessary. I see no obstacle to editing the current FAQ as version 11. I'm sure Gerry would agree. The updating itself should not be difficult -- the information is all in the list archives and heads of members -- but the distribution of the FAQ will be a problem. Right now, there is a weekly automated posting to alt.bbs.internet, alt.online-service, alt.internet.services, alt.answers, comp.mail.misc, comp.answers, news.answers, and news.newusers.questions. The posts to the usenet *answers groups ensure that the FAQ appears on faqs.org, and on the rtfm.mit.edu autoresponder and FTP server. As far as we know, the automated posting originates on expita.com, which is running on auto-pilot. The posts can only be stopped by Gerry. This is how it works. FAQs and other important documents posted to the usenet *answers groups are archived at the discretion of the group moderators. faqs.org updates automatically from those archives, and rtfm.mit.edu updates from faqs.org. We need to maintain continuity if we can, but obviously we cannot post new versions to the newsgroups while version 10.2 is being posted. The solution is to contact the newsgroup moderators and ask them to accept the new FAQ and block the old one. So here is my proposal ... 1. Produce ACCMAIL FAQ version 11 as soon as possible, in a format and style that is similar to previous FAQs. Although I would prefer it to be seen as a collaborative exercise rather than work of one person, I am very willing to do this. I have already assembled much of the required material. 2. Do everything we can to get the new FAQ accepted on the newsgroups. I do not anticipate any difficulty, except finding out who the moderators are. But if that fails, publish the new FAQ under a different name, eg: the Email-Only FAQ version 1. 3. Initiate a debate (if anyone is interested) on this list about how the FAQ could be improved. Personally, I think it should be oriented more towards non-anglophone users and their needs -- but most of all I would like to find out what other subscribers think. 4. If there is a general concensus for a change in style, tone, content or format, publish version 12 to mark ten years of ACCMAIL ... it started in 1994, when the Internet was already established, but the WWW had just begun. -- szs `at` szs `dot` net -- To contribute to the discussion, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe, email to the *admin* address [EMAIL PROTECTED] with UNSUBSCRIBE ACCMAIL as the message body. Web to Email Server Test Pages
Hello accmailers ... I'm developing a new resource for people who use email-only methods to retrieve web pages. If you get http://szs.net/emailonly/tests/ you will see immediately what it is. The idea is have a standard set of very small files which can be used to test and compare output from the various servers still available. What I am especially interested in is the requirements of people who want to retrieve pages using non-Latin writing systems, eg: Russian, Arabic, Armenian, Greek, Urdu, Chinese, etc. I don't think the tests are adequate yet, and I would appreciate any suggestions for additional pages -- including, if needed, pages which are language-specific. Text files using different encoding systems will follow next week. -- szs `at` szs `dot` net -- To contribute to the discussion, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe, email to the *admin* address [EMAIL PROTECTED] with UNSUBSCRIBE ACCMAIL as the message body. NEWS: new quiet owner
Accmailers ... The list has a new 'quiet' owner: Eugeny Sattler, a veteran list member, contributor and moderator. Quiet owners do not have admin responsibiity, but they can make executive decisions in case of an emergency. There are two other quiet owners: Gerry Boyd and Bob Rankin. So if I get abducted by aliens, the list will be in safe, non-alien hands. -- szs `at` szs `dot` net -- To contribute to the discussion, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe, email to the *admin* address [EMAIL PROTECTED] with UNSUBSCRIBE ACCMAIL as the message body. Updating the FAQ
On 7 Sep 2004 at 16:57, Albert Reiner wrote: To prevent a similar situation in the future, it might be a good idea to put some notes into the new version stating under what conditions people may modify and redistribute the text. (Just pointing to some well-known licence might be sufficient.) Some good, relevant points here. My idea is that the FAQ should be published with an Open Content licence (eg: see http://creativecommons.org/faq/ ), and not be the property or copyright of any individual. In my interpretation the only alternatives are - to ignore Mr. Boyd's copyright and count on him not suing anybody; But Gerry Boyd is a reasonable person who is not going to sue anybody, or do anything except offer encouragment. That is what I believe, and I also have correspondence from him stating his intention to pass the FAQ on to somebody else. You are right, but the real issue is whether a new FAQ will be accepted by distribution channels. - to wait for a statement by Mr. Boyd that updating is fine with him; or I will, of course, keep trying. - to write a new Accmail FAQ from scratch but in sufficiently different form so that the copyright of the old one does not apply. That might ultimately be what we have to do. No problem changing the format -- it has barely changed in ten years, and really needs a facelift. The name would have to be different, not ACCMAIL. By the way, it is good to have some discussion of these issues on the list. Eventually, we will have to persuade the moderators of the *answers newsgroups to accept a new FAQ. It might be much easier if the entire process is documented right here in the list archives, for everybody to see. -- szs `at` szs `dot` net -- To contribute to the discussion, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe, email to the *admin* address [EMAIL PROTECTED] with UNSUBSCRIBE ACCMAIL as the message body. NEWS: a new accmail topic
Hello ACCMailers ... A Listserver 'topic' defines a subset of posts to the list. Until now, we have had just one topic (NEWS), but we have just added another named UPDATES. Posts labelled UPDATES will be restricted to formatted updates of the main FAQ -- authoritative information that is more-or-less ready for publication. Anyone may post an UPDATES message, but the moderators will not approve it unless it fits the description, ie: the moderation process will be far more rigorous for UPDATES than for anything else. Subscribers who want only new FAQ information (ie: those not interested in discussion) now have a way of getting it. The default options are to receive all posts as a daily digest. Games by Email
For a long time, the ACCMAIL FAQ has had a entry for the PBeM Server (for info, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with Subject help tutorial) I always thought it was a rather obscure interest until I looked at the Open Directory category Games: Online: Play-By-E-Mail at http://dmoz.org/Games/Online/Play-By-E-Mail/ There are hundreds of games that can be played! They must be far more popular than I had ever imagined, and perhaps worth an expanded entry in the next FAQ. Her is teh English category description: Play-by-mail gaming involves strategic or roleplaying games which are played via email or postal mail. Typcially each player will send his or her orders to the moderator, or GM, who will determine what happened in the game for the particular turn, and send updates to each player. Computer-moderated PBEM (play-by-email) gaming uses a computer program as the moderator instead of a human. There are more in French, German, Italian, Polish, Russian Swedish. Most of the games I have never heard of. I don't even know what kind of games they are (except for Chess and Go). Does anyone know more about how these games are played? Does anyone actually do it? -- szs `at` szs `dot` net -- To contribute to the discussion, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe, email to the *admin* address [EMAIL PROTECTED] with UNSUBSCRIBE ACCMAIL as the message body. UPDATES: web-to-email servers / Agora
This information is based on recent tests, and is believed to be accurate on the date of the post. Agora (dna.affrc.go.jp) Category: web-to-email servers Posting address: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Command: in the message body Web page: none, but there is an online help file at http://www.dna.affrc.go.jp/misc/Agora/Help.txt Syntax and returned document: SEND URL Returns a text dump of the requested page. If you request a binary file (eg: image, PDF), it returns a uu-encoded attachment. SOURCE URL Returns the source HTML of the requested page BSOURCE URL Returns the requested resource as a uu-encoded attachment. RSEND return-email-address URL RSOURCE return-email-address URL Same as SEND and SOURCE, but Agora will return the requested resource to return-email-address DEEP URL Returns the requested resource, and documents to which it is linked, each in a separate email. Note that the total number of lines in these emails will not be more than 5,000. Character encoding issues: The character set of Agora emails is us-ascii. Web pages which have characters with code positions greater than 127 (eg: diacritics, Unicode) are corrupted. However, you can use BSOURCE to retrieve such files as uu-encoded attachments. Recommendation: Use SEND if your target is - a text file - an English language web page Use SOURCE if you need - the markup of an English language web page Use DEEP only if your target and *all* its links are - small text files - small English language web pages Use BSOURCE if your target is - a web page in a language which uses diacritics - a web page in a language which does not use the Latin alphabet - a binary file Other: - The Agora server at dna.affrc.go.jp is for requests to research and academic sites only. - Before using Agora, get and read the 'help' file: send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with HELP as the message body. - Agora attachments always have the name AGORA.BIN. To save the attachment, give it a name and filetype appropriate for your system, eg: if it is a PDF file, save AGORA.BIN as something.pdf - The maximum length of an Agora email is 5000 lines. This is long enough for most web pages and text files, but excludes large uu- encoded binary files. Note that uu-encoded files are significantly larger than the original. - Use DEEP only if you are *certain* that you will be able to read the return pages, and if you *know* that the combined length of the pages is less than 5,000 lines. Examples: Email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: (anything) with message body: SEND http://szs.net/emailonly/tiny.html SOURCE http://szs.net/emailonly/tiny.html BSOURCE http://szs.net/emailonly/tiny.gif If you wish to reply to this post, please remove the word UPDATES: from the subject line of your reply. -- szs `at` szs `dot` net -- To contribute to the discussion, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe, email to the *admin* address [EMAIL PROTECTED] with UNSUBSCRIBE ACCMAIL as the message body. Is WWW4Mail at Trieste Dead?
On 29 Sep 2004 at 14:09, Ramiro Ochoa wrote: No, it is not dead. It is (sometimes) VERY slow. The reply comes after one or two days, but it works. OK, the two WWW4Mail servers are not dead if somebody somewhere can use them. I guess something like this is happening ... * WWW4Mail makes quite large demands on the server, so it would be natural for system admin people to restrict its operation to certain times of the day. It puts incoming requests in a queue which may take several days to service. * Possibly, it filters out certain IP blocks or top-level domains. That might explain why I get only delivery failures. But are the WWW4Mail servers still useful? As we all know, WWW4Mail is very good -- but why would you use it if you don't know when, or if, you will get a reply? The context here is the next version of the ACCMAIL FAQ. My principal idea is that it should focus on how to perform tasks, rather than list servers which might or might not work. For example: How can I use email-only methods to get the latest news about XYZ?, or How can I use email-only methods to research my postgraduate dissertation on subject ABC? These are not abstract needs -- they are real tasks. To carry them out, readers of the FAQ should know which of the available resources are most suitable. If you need one web page, and you can wait for it, WWW4Mail is fine. But research often involves following a succession of links -- and for that, the current WWW4Mail servers would be no good at all. On http://szs.net/emailonly/tests/ , I have listed some test pages which are designed to provide information for a comparative analysis of web-to-email function. Right now there are eleven low-impact items. I have results for all the servers except WWW4Mail at Trieste and Bellanet. I know how WWW4Mail behaves by default, but I would also like to know, unambiguously, what they actually do now using the various WWW4mail options. I can't get an answer. Would other people like to try from they are, and report? -- szs `at` szs `dot` net -- To contribute to the discussion, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe, email to the *admin* address [EMAIL PROTECTED] with UNSUBSCRIBE ACCMAIL as the message body. Where We Are
Here is Listserv's breakdown of ACCMAIL subscribers by country. Listserv does not know your actual country of residence. The table below is really an analyis of the domain registration of your Internet Service Providers or webmail hosts -- not of where you live. So all subscribers with .com, .org or .net addresses are included in the USA count, which is why the USA seems to be the main subscriber country. My guess is that most of the 'USA' subscribers are actually in other countries, and the number of countries represented is an under-estimate. On 13 Nov 2004 at 15:53, Gary Griswold wrote: A university in a remote location has a 33kbps UUCP connection to the Internet. Because their connection to the internet includes one step that is UUCP, they are unable to use HTTP, but use accmail services, such as www4mail, agora, emailweb, pagegetter. For curriculum content purposes they would like to obtain a local copy of some specific websites. Getting pages one at a time is very slow, because of their 33kbps connection. If they had a local copy of specific websites they wished to use in course content, they would be able to obtain a good response. I tried to do something similar a few years ago while working at a University in a country with very poor telecom infrastructure. We had access to the web, but in practice it was unusable, especially in the rainy season. ACCMAIL methods were the only reliable way to get web pages with important content, but it is not possible to reconstruct entire usable websites that way. Solution: Find an external collaborator with a shell account. Use the shell account to grab websites, then package them for email to the remote university. Most of it can be done with a Unix shell script ... 1. Use wget with flags -rkp to download a browsable website, eg: wget -rkp http://domain.org/ 2. Archive the website with tar + gzip (or zip), eg: zip -r domain.org.zip domain.org 3. Use split with flag -b to break the archive into email-able chunks, each with an identifiable name and sequence suffix, eg: split -b 32k domain.org.zip domain.org_20041116_ 4. Use mpack to email each chunk separately as an attachment 5. Reassemble the chunks at the remote university. The method used depends on who (or what) receives the emails. Ideally they should be filtered to a local script, but a human being can also do it. The main problems are those which would be problems for any other ACCMAIL method -- cookies, broken dynamic content, browser sniffing, etc. However, on the whole, wget does a good job. We never tried to automate the process, eg: to accept email requests for new websites or to refresh existing sites, but it would not have been very difficult. I would recommend that you inform the owners or adminstrators of your target websites. Tell them what you are doing and why. Some of them might package their website for you. -- szs `at` szs `dot` net -- To contribute to the discussion, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe, email to the *admin* address [EMAIL PROTECTED] with UNSUBSCRIBE ACCMAIL as the message body. The most recent published version is 10.2, which is the version available at rtfm.mit.edu. In August we started discussions about producing a new version, eg: August/September archives http://listserv.aol.com/cgi-bin/wa?A1=ind0408dL=accmail http://listserv.aol.com/cgi-bin/wa?A1=ind0408eL=accmail http://listserv.aol.com/cgi-bin/wa?A1=ind0409aL=accmail http://listserv.aol.com/cgi-bin/wa?A1=ind0409bL=accmail etc (ACCMAIL Archives - August 2004, week 4) I'm gradually assembling material for a replacement -- in fact I have most of it ready, but I also have to find the time to edit it. When that is done I propose to get opinions and improvements from the members of this list, so it can be presented as a genuinely collaborative publication. Getting the replacement FAQ on mit.edu may not be so easy, as the contact is Gerry Boyd, who is apparently non-contactable. We will cross that bridge when we come to it. -- szs `at` szs `dot` net -- To contribute to the discussion, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe, email to the *admin* address [EMAIL PROTECTED] with UNSUBSCRIBE ACCMAIL as the message body. Where can I get info on available FTP, Gopher, Archie, etc. servers?
Hi William ... On 3 Jan 2006, duplooy wrote: I'm new to ACCMAIL, and subscribed after reading about it in a file that was last updated in June 1999. Considering that many of the FTP, Gopher, Archie, Veronica, etc... servers have been closing down, I was wondering where I can get an updated list of the ones still in function? The latest version of the ACCMAIL FAQ was published April 2002. You can get it at http://szs.net/emailonly/ or, better, follow the instructions in the foot of this email. The monthly reminder is probably your best information source right now. The most recent was 1 January 2005. Gopher, Archie and Veronica are all effectively defunct. -- To contribute to the discussion, email to accmail@listserv.aol.com To unsubscribe, email to the *admin* address [EMAIL PROTECTED] with UNSUBSCRIBE ACCMAIL as the message body. To get the latest version of the ACCMAIL FAQ, send a blank email to accmail.faq.en `AT` szs.net (replacing `AT` with @ to form a proper email address). --

POSTING TO ACCMAIL: LANGUAGE The language of the list is international English. Don't worry if you think your English is not very good -- and don't apologise -- MOST subscribers use English as a foreign or second language. == 5. POSTING TO ACCMAIL: SUBJECT LINES Mail should have a meaningful subject heading which reflects the content of the message -- it helps others to find messages of interest (and is necessary if you receive a lot of messages per day), and it helps to follow a thread on a particular topic. Non-meaningful subjects are: 1. empty or blank subjects 2. Subject: I need help 3. Subject: A question 4. Subject: Re: ACCMAIL Digest == 6. POSTING TO ACCMAIL: OFF-TOPIC Make sure your post isn't off-topic. In particular, this mailing list does NOT deal with topics like: - General use of your computer. - Where do I get this or that software -- instead ask how to retrieve it via email. - Where do I find information on ??? -- instead ask how do I find information concerning ??? via email. - Windows 95/98/NT problems -- instead ask where do I find information regarding a problem (email address, mailing list, web page. etc.) == 7. POSTING TO ACCMAIL: NETIQUETTE DON'T include the entire contents of a previous posting in your reply. DO cut mercilessly. Leave just enough to indicate what you're responding to. NEVER include mail headers except maybe the From: line. If you can't figure out how to delete lines in your mailer software, paraphrase or type the quoted material in. DON'T SEND A MESSAGE IN ALL CAPS. CAPITALIZED MESSAGES ARE HARDER TO READ THAN LOWER CASE OR MIXED CASE. DO use normal capitalization. Separate your paragraphs with blank lines. Make your message inviting to your potential readers. DON'T send messages with HTML coding or MIME extensions. DO learn how to change your email program so that it sends only plain text ASCII to the list. Make things easy for the recipient. Many mailers strip
Remembering Gerry Boyd
Hello ACCMail people ... Long-term subscribers may recall our discussions, about two years ago, on maintaining the ACCMAIL FAQ. Plans for updating the FAQ foundered because Mr. Gerry Boyd, the previous moderator of this list, was the formal copyright holder of the FAQ, and also the registered maintainer at http://www.faqs.org/faqs/internet-services/access-via-email/ For example, the following posts ... http://www.mail-archive.com/accmail@listserv.aol.com/msg01792.html http://www.mail-archive.com/accmail@listserv.aol.com/msg01838.html http://www.mail-archive.com/accmail@listserv.aol.com/msg01842.html But Gerry Boyd had retired, and we found it impossible to contact him. Emails were never answered. I did not think that was strange. After all, for many people retirement means starting a new life completely, his subscription to this list had been set to NOMAIL, it was obvious that there would be no more updates to his website expita.com, and he had announced his intention to spend as much time as possible on long cycling tours. Today, I discovered the real reason. Gerry Boyd died on 4 May 2004. There is more information on http://help-net.unl.edu/GEB.html If you would like to read his last cycling journals, visit http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/gboyd None of us know whay he looked like, but he left two photographs at http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/page/pic/?pic_id=16146size=large (45 kb) http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/page/pic/?pic_id=21104size=large (96 kb) -- To contribute to the discussion, email to accmail@listserv.aol.com To unsubscribe, email to the *admin* address [EMAIL PROTECTED] with UNSUBSCRIBE ACCMAIL as the message body.
