How smart are the kids? Putting the address in the hosts file like
127.0.0.1 www.lots-o-porn.com would deny access to the web site, but
not if the kid new the actual ip address

Kids typically set up proxy servers to get around blocks.

It is probably more effective to explain to the kids that both your
firewall router and the ISP keeps a log of all the sites they visit and
that you can easily check what they have been doing on the Internet.

You mention a rendering speed increase of 8X. While that may be true
for some people, most won't be upgrading that far, and will only see
rendering speed increases of maybe 2X.

Rendering speed is not always such a big issue. For example FCP will
provide a quick render that is usually plenty good enough for editing.
You only have to do the full render when producing the final.

I wouldn't use the service to block anything from children or anyone
else [I don't like any kind of censorship], but am noting that the
feature is available. Use it judiciously.

It is interesting to see them try to innovate the old DNS concept. In
addition to blocking they also provide statistics about internet usage by
tabulating requests by IP address. While I'm impressed, I wonder what use
such data could be put to. Can anyone here suggest how such information
could be put to practical use?

As for the blocking, SaaS is a much better way to provide this.
Everything is centrally managed. There is no need to install or maintain
any software on the client computer. It is also harder to bypass if you
can lock down the DNS address. Of course, a proxy server still steps
around this easily.

Re: [CGUYS] ISP with a reliable mailserver

2007-09-25 Thread Tom Piwowar
I need recomendations for a service provider that has reliable mail
servers. I currently have an account with Toad.net, and they are
becoming a very unreliable mail service. I have e-mails that show up 5-
10 hours after they are sent (sometimes days), and when you trace the
path it is their internal servers that are not communicating properly.

Toad hosted this list for about two weeks several years back and we soon
found out that they were not a solid service provider.

I am planning on using GoDaddy.com for Webpage hosting and Email, with
either verizon or Speak Easy providing the actual DSL connection.

GoDaddy is primairly a registrar, not a hosting provider. The thrust of
their business is not providing the services you seek. Some (many?)
services that GoDaddy lists end up being links to open source software
that you have to figure out on your own.

GoDaddy is also obnoxiously aggressive about marketing. Once you start
with them they will drown you in sales offers. They will contact you with
email that sounds techincal, but is really just attempts to sell you
more. They will phone you with pitches. They are too aggressive for my
taste. I want a host that is more technical and business like.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

My favorite right now is 1and1.com. If you look at hostcount.com you will
see different flavors of 1and1 listed 4 times in their top 20 list so
they probably are in sum the largest hosing company. They provide a wide
range of services with great depth. Many things that you would need to do
for yourself are already set up and easily configured from their control
panel. Online help is extensive and usually very useful. Phone support
often answers quickly (and sometimes is badly backed up) and is 24/7/365.
They are usually very helpful (and sometimes not). You can get a good
level of service for just $10/month, priced about the same as GoDaddy and
the $10/mo includes domain registration fees for 3 (I think) domains.
They are aggressive too, but not the GoDaddy way. They are aggressive in
pricing and in providing services. I think they are looking to get
business by word of mouth.

[CGUYS] Stealth Windows Updates Come to Roost

2007-09-27 Thread Tom Piwowar
While some will continue to defend MS's stealth patches, it is now
revealed that sloppy programming creates a situation where the stealth
patches block many (around 80) other patches to XP.

The problem happens if you reinstall XP and then try to run Windows
Update. Apparently the stealth patches are installed first and these
block the other patches.

Thus, those of us who must reinstall XP end up without the patches
necessary to defend this insecure operating system.

2007-09-29 Thread Tom Piwowar
OK, here's what I need to know. A friend of mine has yet to enter the
computer age. She is in her early 70's, and is beginning to have some
physical problems that limit her social life. I really want to try and get
her into a computer soon.
Do I push her a little faster, or do I just make the leap into Vista?

This is an application where Windows is inappropriate. She needs a
computer to use, not a computer that provides endless opportunities for
tinkering. Get her a computer that is attractive, easy to use, that works
right out of the box and is not prone to failure. A computer that does
not need anti-virus, anti-spyware, and patches every Tuesday. Getting her
a Windows computer would be a triumph of ideology over good sense (leave
that to the politicians). An iMac 20 would be perfect.

We also have a 1XL, which is great. But, it has a physical feature on

Why not just remove the pop-up switch and locate a toggle switch to

Re: [CGUYS] Fwd: NYT: Altered iPhones Freeze Up

2007-09-29 Thread Tom Piwowar
A software update to Apple's iPhone on Friday disabled
third-party applications and rendered iPhones that had been
unlocked completely unusable.

Later news is that the phones were not made completely unusable, a new
SIMM card could revive the phones. Also, there are reports that some
methods of unlocking continued to work. Most third-party applications did
stop working, but we don't know if the cause was deliberate or incidental.

When OS X first shipped there were many things that Apple told developers
not to try. Those that did not listen to Apple's advice found that
Apple's updates frequently killed their applications.

Looking back on this from 5 years perspective we now know that many parts
of OS X were barely working and Apple knew that much work lay ahead.
Apple knew that these parts of the OS would get major revisions. Apple
did not want the added responsibility of making sure existing third-party
software continued to work. Apple knew it probably would not. So Apple
tried to warn off developers and let them know that they would not have
Apple's support.

Over time, these restrictions lessened and Apple told developers when
various parts of the OS were stable enough for third-party development.
Let's hope the same will happen with the iPhone/iPods.

Re: [CGUYS] [Fwd: XP Gets Life Extension]

2007-09-30 Thread Tom Piwowar
And you're going to be right there with her to teach her to use this? Or
maybe kick in the extra $500 over the cost of a PC?

The price of crappy PCs has crept up as companies like Dell have found
that they can't be profitable at their former prices. And I was not
suggesting you get the cheapest Mac either. I was suggesting the model
that is most likely to be successful. The iMac 20 is $1200.

Your description of the computer user did not suggest that a crappy PC
would be acceptable. Many people do not want to turn a corner of their
home into something resembling Dr. Frankenstein's lab. A computer that
looks intimidating is likely to be a computer that does not get used.

The Mac OS has VNC built in. To do that with Vi$$$ta you will need to buy
a more expensive version. That would be a waste of money.

I would be her only teacher, and I know absolutely nothing about a
Mac. I can do the necessary updates and sort out the messes on a PC.

I don't think ignorance is an acceptable defense. What if her doctor did
not prescribe an important new treatment because keeping up with medical
advances was too much trouble? You have a fiduciary responsibility to
make the best selection for her, not for you.

Instead of taking upon yourself the responsibility to sort out the
messes why not get a computer that won't have the messes? You can then
direct your efforts to the real challenge: teaching her how to use the
computer.

She is not an adventurous type of person.

Sounds like a Mac owner.

Her big hangup has been that she doesn't know how to type.

Tell her that many computer users do not know how to type. We hunt and
peck. Over time we hunt less and peck more.

Considering all of this, I think she'd be safest with a cable connection
behind a firewall

Depends on what is more reliable in her area. I think DSL is usually more
reliable.

all desktop icons hidden except for a word processor, My Documents, Firefox
and a
stand-alone email icon.

What does she need a word processor for? What does she need an email
program for? Keep it simple. Set her up with Gmail. If she must print out
a letter she can type it in Gmail and print from there. I would have the
computer automatically launch FireFox and make the home page Gmail. Put
some icons at the bookmarks toolbar for the other things she needs. Keep
it simple.

Anything more than that, and she will throw her hands in the air and
be done.

Exactly my point.

Hard to say in theory, but there is a way to check it in practice. With
the Mac running in a typical manner, start Activity Monitor and perform
some actions that you would expect need lots of RAM. Then check Activity
Monitor's System Memory panel for page outs (the second number in the
pair). If the page outs are under 400,000 you will not benefit much from
adding RAM. The higher this number the more you will benefit by adding
RAM. This is worth revisiting after you upgrade software or change your
style of working.

[CGUYS] Home Server [Was: MacMini [Was: XP Gets Life Extension]

2007-10-05 Thread Tom Piwowar
Microsoft Home Server is supposed to do that sort of backup. That
is-was due out last month-real soon now-
http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/whs_preview.asp

A Mini would be too expensive for this.

Prices for Linux-based home servers are incredibly low. OWC has the
NASPerform Network Storage Solution with 500GB storage going for $210.
I have been using the Linksys NSLU2 for a couple of years now. That sells
for $60 (without disks).

The Microsoft Home Server runs Windows Server 2003 which I don't think
any sensible person would pick for trouble-free operation. However, the
price looks to be competitive. LaCie promises a version for later this
month with 500GB storage for $199.

Re: [CGUYS] Acrobat .pdf file durability

2007-10-05 Thread Tom Piwowar
I use Adobe InDesign. InDesign gives lots of choices for export,
including prepress, crop marks, compressing images, embedding fonts
[default], compatibility with earlier versions of Acrobat Reader. Only
Postscript fonts can be embedded [? maybe]. A PDF/X file embeds lots of
extra information for offset printing, but I don't know if that includes
fonts. It's a choice in the OS X print dialog box.

Yes, PDF/X includes the fonts and they don't have to be PostScript.
Simplicity is the point of this standard. It is a complete ready-to-print
package. It is a dumbed-down version of PDF that includes only the
features that have been proved to be bullet proof.

Re: [CGUYS] Grabbing domain names of well-known persons?

2007-10-06 Thread Tom Piwowar
By chance, discovered that a rather hot and prominent person (whose been
on Oprah twice fairly recently) actually does not have a website, at least
not one that shows up on GoDaddy, using the name and .com or .net.

There is a good chance that a cybersquatter has grabbed it as a
consequence of your search. There are bunches of sites that offer to
check domain names, but are really gathering information for
cybersquatters. Some people have claimed that this happens with GoDaddy's
domain name check. Best policy is to never check unless you intend to
register an available name immediately.

One thing I'm thinking of is creating a site for or
related to them or their interests, partly as a way of showing them the
potential benefits of having their own site, and thus potentially reaching
so many people.
So given this context, would it still always be inappropriate to
appropriate someone's name as a domain name?

Using it for a fan site would be a very appropriate thing to do.

Why isn't or shouldn't a name considered legally as if it was private
property for certain purposes, including commercializing it?

Many people share the same name. Some people apply for trademarks on
their names.

Well, ended up buying the .com domain for this person's name. Maybe I'll
just hold it for awhile and just see if she wants the name. If I do this or
go beyond this and start creating a website around the themes associated
with her name, just hope she sees this as neutral or positive rather than
creepy or causing hassles.

If you are going to meet her then you can ask for her blessing. Let her
know that if she ever wants to post anything you will do it right away.
And if she ever has a problem with anything you will fix it right away.
Let her know that legally she can ask for the domain to be transferred to
her any time she wants so you can really only do this with her blessing.
If she has a publicist you should ask to be added to their press list.

Actually, this isn't *strictly* true. Unless there's a design flaw,
downstream devices should simply wait and keep trying. My router's often on

You are right. A properly designed device should keep trying so the order

does.

I thought it was a bit creepy too. On the other hand, a domain is a
valuable thing to be given for just a few dollars. With this should come
some accountability.

I can see having some of the info. public to avoid the situation of someone
poaching someone else's name for a domain (as I did) and that person not
being able to find out (or find out easily) who did this or why. But the
idea that you would have to make your home address, etc. available to the
world and for being sold in order to register a domain name if you are
stupid enough to give your real address and other personal info. like I did,
seems crazy to me. There has to be better ways to address both sets of
concerns.

I put out a proposal here at the office to get a number of notebooks and
in order to keep them all in the same state, we'd ghost one and apply the
image to the rest. My understanding is that a Windows license is mapped
to a MAC address - is that true? Has anyone done this before where you'd
still have a valid and uncrippled version of Windows for every unit?

Doesn't work. MS knows about Ghost and Symantec cooperates with MS. MS
has a tech note with the proper procedure for using Ghost with its
products. You run a utility first to deactivate the license. Then after
the copy you reactivate with new licenses.

So if it's illegal or clearly unethical, why is is allowed, done apparently
frequently... and not called into question very much?

Why. Unless you have it trademarked, your name is not protected. Why
should it be? Why do you think your name belongs to you? You probably did

IMVHO, complaining that a Mac does not work exactly like a PC is a silly

change the short name of the root admin...
*40* steps to do this. 40. If you don't make things worse doing it.

That is why those of us who know what we are doing use a widely-available
script. The general rule is to Google first, bitch later.

Windows+L on the PC does this in a fraction of a second. No such
thing for a Mac; you pays your money and takes your chances.

This is off by default. You need to check a box in the Security
preference panel. Then set one of the hot corners to start the screen
saver.

P.S. If you open system preferences and use the Spotlight field, the Mac
will guide you to the command you need. Nothing like this is available on
Windows.

Clearly, we could legislate that everyone at birth be given a UUID/GUID
(Universally Unique ID/Globally Unique ID) and prevent anyone but that
person from using that ID in a web site.

Simple, just apply an RFID implant shortly after birth.

What about the tompiwowarsucks.biz web site? We should probably legislate
that no one who doesn't believe it to be true should be allowed to own that
domain name. Otherwise people will start using satire, sarcasm, and who
knows what else.

Fer sure satire, sarcasm, and who knows what else should be strictly
illegal. Possibly a capital crime or punishable by lobotomy at a minimum.

Outrageous claims, like FriendsOfTheEarth.org, should also be
prohibited. Clearly they lie.

Oh, and to be fair, if one of them is rich or famous or has a company named
after him, that person should jump to the front of the list and get the one
without any numbers in it.

Yes, that is how it usually works.

And if parents divorce and have shared custody of the children, the same
should apply to the children's domain names. It's only fair.

That's why everyone gets numbered, not named. Keep it simple.

You are on the *right* track.

That's a given, but I keep coming upon issues on the Mac that are nothing
but hoop jumping, compared to administering a PC. Change the admin name on
a PC? That takes seconds.

This is not just a name written in a box on the screen. You also must
take care of things like file access permissions and the keychain. I
guess since the Windows system is inherently insecure there is less
involved in changing a username.

The Apple memo is also written in baby steps like maybe they were writing
it for a clueless Windows sysadmin. Instead of saying replace contents
of B with A it says open window A open window B position both
windows so you can see their contents select all in B drag B into the
trash select all in A press the option key drag all from A to B
close A etc. That's 9 steps that should have been one sentence.

Frustration can happen when you don't understand how things really work.

The builder estimated 3 months for our house addition. My wife insisted
that it could not possibly require more than two weeks.

If you really want to make it easy, why not just change everybody's

Re: [CGUYS] MacIgnorance

2007-10-14 Thread Tom Piwowar

Windows' biggest problem is installing the default user as the admin. Don't
run as an admin and security problems vanish. Now, if we can only get these
idiot developers to stop coding their products to only run if the user is an
admin.

The problem is only partially idiot developers. I would say a bigger
problem is idiot 'softies:

1) pretending they have a mulit-user OS when they really don't.

This is demonstrated by your complaing of too many steps. Windows does
not need these steps because there is no real security there. It is like
a kid's computer you buy for $10 at Toys-R-Us: lots of dials and
buttons, but nothing inside the box.

2) not providing a proper API for developers

A good example is font management software because it has to heavily
interact with the OS. Compare features in Suitcase for Mac with Suitcase
for Windows. You can't argue that Extensis doesn't know what features are
needed because they are in the Mac version of Suitcase. Yet the Windows
version of Suitcase is bare bones. The reason is that the Windows API is
severely deficient. Extensis can't get at the functions they need to
program a decent product. On the Mac a regular user can run Suitcase --
not so on Windows. I use Extensis as an example because they are a leader
in this category. If you test the other Windows font managers (as I have)
you won't find these missing features there either. Font management under
Windows is a decade behind the Mac's due to API defects. It is not just a
problem with developers.

Re: [CGUYS] boot G4 or Intel Mac from flash drive?

2007-10-15 Thread Tom Piwowar
Techtool Protoge is on a FireWire, not USB drive.
http://micromat.com/index.php?option=com_contenttask=viewid=34Itemid=49

That's right. I forgot that detail. Booting from FW has been built into
the hardware for many years. Booting from USB is newer, but works for
recent models (as previously noted). I would expect USB booting to be
less reliable just because I generally find USB to be less reliable, but
I have not tried it. I note that Apple's migration tool uses FW, not USB,
even though Macs all come with USB2 these days.

Haven't seen a tiny FW drive like that before. Can I get one without the
TT software?

They are rare, but if you google on firewire flash drive you will find
them. Reviews say they are no faster than USB2 flash drives and a bit
more expensive. Definitely a special-purpose only product.

Re: [CGUYS] [SPAM] Re: [CGUYS] Security Ignorance

2007-10-15 Thread Tom Piwowar
You sure about that John? eWeek seems to agree with me. Now, I won't argue
that running as a least privilege user will absolutely eliminate security
exploits...

You misapply the eWeek story. EWeek is comparing different settings of
the same insecure OS. No one here is proposing that some settings are
less dangerous than others. You don't make a good case for your position
by trying to change the topic.

The ease with which you can change these settings in Windows is prima
facie proof of insecurity. The reason you have to jump through hoops to
do this on a Mac is exactly because of the built-in security.

Also note that that Apple procedure is not actually changing the name on
an account. It is migrating the contents of an account to a new account
and then changing security settings of the files that were moved.

This does not really get you what you want. The 501 account has special
privileges when running as administrator. This new account will not have
those.

Since you can log in using the long name I don't know why you insist on
changing the short name. Why not just make all the long names the same
and be happy? This is an artificial crisis.

[CGUYS] Details on Apple's Time Machine

2007-10-15 Thread Tom Piwowar
This is a long article and the first part is a history of backup
strategies (something not everyone will find interesting). However, after
that it goes into a lot of detail about Time Machine. This is a big
deal for Apple and they have invested a lot in making it work by making a
very interesting change to how its file system works. They have created a
new type of alias (shortcut) that keeps a file around as long as any one
of these new pointers exists and lets them stack up multiple instances of
the same file. This allows them to make many snapshots of your files
while automatically eliminating duplicates. Very interesting.

Re: [CGUYS] Security Ignorance

2007-10-16 Thread Tom Piwowar
Jeff, I'm afraid you've missed earlier evidence of this. While he has now
blasts Vista for jumping through hoops to support old apps, not so long ago
he blasted it for breaking old apps. It's difficult to take this very
seriously.

You have poor memory. My complaint was about device drivers, not software.

I may or may not complain about support for software. It all depends on
how the transition gets managed. For example, Apple started making
changes in OS 8 and OS 9 in preparation for the transition to OS X. Back
then the changes were optional. They provided a path for developers to
follow to get them closer to where they needed to be when these changes
were no longer optional. When OS X arrived Apple provided a transitional
crutch API, again to make it easier to transition. Apple also provided a
parallel operating environment (Classic) to support applications that did
not convert. Apple, a much smaller company than MS, made a 10 year effort
to facilitate a transition. Has MS done anything like this?

[CGUYS] Mac Market Share Grows [Was: Mac Administrator]

2007-10-17 Thread Tom Piwowar
All those iPhone users? How many are there? And how many are there
that are Mac users?

Well over a million sold at this point. They are selling at a much more
rapid pace then iPods did when they were introduced. Perhaps they will
take over the world.

Reports are that many people buying iPhones pick up their first Macs at
the same time. Why they would do this I don't know. Perhaps when they see
how well they are treated at the Apple store they decide it is a good
company to do business with?

But they out priced themselves along with tagging themselves with ATT.
If I could buy a reasonably priced iPhone that could hook up with a
pay as Uuse it plan then maybe. But as is, it's not for me. That's

Actually the costs are very much in line for the typical cell phone user.
Obviously such costs will seem insane to a pay-go type user (like me),
but for most people they seem perfectly normal.

I do think that big outfits such as Google need to be more responsive to
lowly users who are merely trying to point out a problem. Instead, it
appears as though they waited until some entity that could create some
waves for them mentioned the problem before taking the issue seriously
and making corrections. What else is new?

Congratulations on your success.

With Google I'm a bit sympathetic because I know that the number of
emails they get is huge. The strategy with a big organization is often to
do a little research to find a place where your concerns might get
noticed -- like a narrowly-defined support list or blog. Rob probably
knew the right person to call.

I'm feeling equally snubbed by a local ISP (HIS.COM) that I have
previously recommended highly on this list. A small company like HIS
ought to know that when they don't respond it is very easy to move
business elsewhere. So it ain't just Google that snubs its customers.

IMHO, it's taking a long time to release an SDK for the iPhone because
the iPhone is more than just a phone, and more than just a PDA, it's a
computer plus phone plus WiFi device. Did Apple release the iPhone too
early, before the development kit was ready?

When the Mac was born I remember being surprised to see that some of the
programmers documentation had be written many years earlier (I think I
saw some that was 5 years old). It really does take a long time to get
all the necessary information and tools in place. It took a long time of
OS X too. I think they are right to ship the hardware first and let the
rest catch up eventually.

Re: [CGUYS] Mac Market Share Grows [Was: Mac Administrator]

2007-10-18 Thread Tom Piwowar
Third quarter figures for US computer sales have HP pushing Dell out of
1st place. Apple is in 3rd place with a 7.3% share.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,138578-c,companynews/article.html

I suppose most would agree that it is time for any company selling fewer
computers than Apple to get out of the business. I don't agree. I'm just
repeating wisdom I've gleaned from this list.

Apple is growing its laptop business impressively AppleInsider.com is
reporting that Apple is awaiting word from Intel before announcing new
Mac Pros with Penryn CPUs for media professionals. I expect OS X 10.5
to increase sales as well.

I saw Intel's CEO interviewed a couple of weeks ago on a PBS business
show hosted by Jeff Greenfield (smart guy). Otellini was asked whether
starting to work with Apple antogonized his existing clients. He said he
didn't care because he thought Intel was getting stale and needed Apple
to shake things up. Otellini said that Apple was pushing Intel to achieve
more and he liked that.

Re: [CGUYS] Mac Market Share Grows

2007-10-18 Thread Tom Piwowar
The problem with those figures is they don't show OS share, only hardware.
As has been obvious on this list for some time now, a lot of people are
buying Macs and installing Windows. It's getting rare to find a Mac owner
that doesn't run both OS's, thus seriously skewing the stats.

I put that in the same bin as the one about virus writers ignoring Macs
due to their market share.

This is what is known as an ad hominem attack. Instead of focusing on
the merits, he attacks the people who own Macs. He even attacks people
who own iPods. There is no tech in this issue of ExtremeTech. What
does this accomplish?

The worst thing about Macs is that they show clearly and deliberately
that a better way is possible.

[CGUYS] BTX vs ATX [Was: Mac Market Share Grows]

2007-10-19 Thread Tom Piwowar
I have noticed that their new BTX format is not quite catching on in
the market. Is it going to go the way of IBM's MCA format?

Will PC makers contiune to cling to a 10-year-old ATX MoBo design? I will
place my bet on lack of innovation. That seems to be endemic in Windows
land.

[CGUYS] Security Fraud [Was: Mac Market Share Grows]

2007-10-19 Thread Tom Piwowar
Reread Mike's post. Read the last sentence most carefully. Then ask
yourself, during what part of the same time period was Vista in the
marketplace?

Apple OS X; 10 months; 7 flaws

MS Vista; 2 months; 6 flaws

Most of you will be able to do the math.

There were 18 security advisories from Secunia for mac os x so far in 2007.
Seven of these were rated highly critical meaning system level access,
access to private files etc. The holes are there. Not long ago a hole in
quicktime was exploited in just a few hours when the winner was offered 10k
for doing so. I wouldn't go as far as saying mac os is less secure then
windows, I would say it probably is more secure, but it's not some
impregnable wall as some mac users believe. Seven critical flaws prove
that. Interestingly, Vista had six in the same time period.

Re: [CGUYS] Security Fraud [Was: Mac Market Share Grows]

2007-10-20 Thread Tom Piwowar
You might want to go to the site to *see* what i'm talking about before you
write. The report on Secunia covers the first 8 months of 2007...
Vista was released at the end of January.

Reread Mike's post. Read the last sentence most carefully. Then ask
yourself, during what part of the same time period was Vista in the
 marketplace?
 Apple OS X; 10 months; 7 flaws
MS Vista; 2 months; 6 flaws

Mike, Having a product available for sale is not the same as being in the
marketplace. It took months for Vista to be found on any significant
number of computers. By my estimation that did not happen until Summer
2007. You could quibble about whether I should credit Vista with 2 months
or 3 months, but to say that Vista was in the marketplace for any
significant part of 2007 is simply not accurate. Software sitting in a
warehouse, on a store shelf, or in an unopened box simply don't count.

If I wanted to quibble I expect that I could easily argue that most,
maybe all, of the flaws Secunia reported were insignificant. Note that
none of the Secunia-reported Mac flaws resulted in any real exploit.

The fact that you find it necessary to obsess over the Secunia reports
and that Mac users pay no mind to these sky-is-falling reports says a lot
about the state of computer security. Ultimately that is what really
matters and we don't have to split hairs to establish these facts.

2007-10-20 Thread Tom Piwowar
I don't have an iPod and don't particularly want one.
 So sad. ;(

Why is that?

Well there could be different motivations so the why part is not so
easy to analyze. Hovever I do think that the general term sad is an
accurate umbrella for all of them.

1) To hate Apple so much that one would intentionally buy the inferior
product is sad. It might even be called sick.

2) To lack the acuity to see the difference is sad. I suspect this
handicap is MS's problem, their top managers simply lack the keen
perception to identify a dud.

3) To lack the dough for a $150 nano is sad (but understandable).
