Bug#1069877: python3-ldap3: Ldif module unavailable/nonfunctional

2024-04-26 Thread peter tuharsky
Package: python3-ldap3
Version: 2.9.1-2
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

according to Python documentation, the python-ldap module should contain ldif
module with functions such as LDIFParser, LDIFWrite etc.
As of Debian packages, the former python-ldap did support this functionality.
However, its successor python3-ldap3 does not.
Attempt to call the module leads to error:

ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'ldif'

Bug#1033726: krb5: Unable to set DEFCCNAME, krb5.conf dosen't respect default_ccache_name - cached login impossible?

2023-03-31 Thread tuharsky
Package: krb5-config
Version: 2.6+nmu1
Severity: normal
File: krb5.conf

Dear Maintainer,

I'm setting up an AD authenticated machine. I have problem with credentials
cache. KRB5 insists the cache file to be /tmp/krb5cc_{%euid}
Thus, the file is deleted after reboot. However, I want to enable cached
(offline) login, so I set in /etc/krb5.conf in [libdefaults] section:
default_ccache_name = /var/cache/krb5/krb5cc_{%euid}

The KRB5 seems to ignore the setting, klist shows cache file still to be in the
default location

It seems that AppArmor may activate during kernel (linux-image) update

Bug#920243: xserver-xorg: Regression - after update, X wont start (black screen) on HP 630 (Intel G30 series graphic driver)

2019-01-22 Thread tuharsky

Dear Maintainer,

I use LTSP on notebook HP 630. I haven't used it for several weeks, probably
since october or november.
After some security updates, X wont start anymore and stays on black screen.
The problem only affects this machine. Other machines with different graphic
chips are still working as before.

Bug#917613: Regression: Thunderbird dosen't open ("already running" error)

2019-01-02 Thread Peter Tuharsky

Hi, Carsten

Thank You for Your valuable input.

The only things I don't understand, how was AppArmor enabled, and how
was it working for years until the last update of kernel/TB/whatever; I
have symlinked home dir for long time now... Could be that only the last
TB update enabled it?

Well, I could also try to report this to apparmor (and the freezing
problem to kernel team); as You can see, I am ready to report bugs. I
only doubt this could get anywhere, because I'm not so sawwy so to debug
kernel, and Apparmor's inability to process symlinks is a known
"wontfix" bug.

Anyway, thank You again.

Hmm, if you want to disable AppArmor completely why not remove the
package then?

I know it's not the answer you probably want to hear but reporting the
problems would be better. :)
The AppArmor people in Debian are a really responsive team.

Bug#917613: Regression: Thunderbird dosen't open ("already running" error)

2019-01-01 Thread Peter Tuharsky

Finally I found the culprit. It was apparmor!

I have never intentionally done anything with it, but upgrading kernel
version from 4.9 to 4.18 (due to some kernel 4.9 security upgrade
problem that freezes my computer), it must have enabled apparmor by
default or so.

And since I have my home folder symlinked to other drive, and apparmor
does not support symlinks, it denied Thunderbird the access to its lock
file (and other files as well).

After I manually added the real drive path of my profile in
/etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.thunderbird, it now works.

Should I encounter more problems with other apps, I may as well
completely disable apparmor in grub config.

this problem has nothing to do with your profile.
Thunderbird is doing some magical forking of itself if Thunderbird get
started. Sometimes it happen that some thread in that chain gets broken
so no chain from the first event to the last forked process is available
any more.

Starting Thunderbird for a second time is detecting that already a
process thunderbird is running and is printing out that message you see.

This all is an upstream issue, we can do quite nothing against this in
Debian and I guess there is at least one more existing bug report in the
BTS about this.

You can work around this if you kill any remaining processes of thunderbird.

   $ killall -9 thunderbird

When running from gnome-terminal, I get these errors on console upon starting:
(thunderbird:12521): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: :1:34: Expected

(thunderbird:12521): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: :1:77: Expected
')' in color definition

I doubt they are connected to the problem however.

No, these are all messages from GTK, you probably using Gnome3 ad DM.

Interestingly, my other installation of Thunderbird works without problem.

Well, I see this problem from time to time to. No matter what system I
use. A chance to see this more often is after package updates if you
haven't restarted a running thunderbird after a version update.

Bug#915421: regression: 3D performance severely affected for Radeon RX 580

2018-12-03 Thread Peter Tuharsky
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.7+19
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I encountered a severe performance degradation after security updates
that I ran after several weeks without update.
Since the xserver-xorg seems the only package that might have such
consequence in the assumed timeframe, I'm reporting a bug here.

The 3D performance has never been on par with windows drivers for
such a powerful GPU, but it has been viable at least, with 20-40
FPS for the ordinary 3D games in low- to moderate details.
Now it is completely useless, most 3D games give 1 FPS or so.
Minetest gives 10, that is tragical for such a simple game.
The desktop and 2D games seem unaffected.

Interestingly, I tested on different machine with the old Intel
onboard GPU, and it works like before, unaffected.

It seems like 3D acceleration does not work at all now.
Maybe some odd driver (module) is being used for the Radeon GPU now?

The software environment is Debian 9 Sarge, LTSP thin client, games
are being executed as local apps on the client.
Only distributional graphic drivers are installed and the driver
(module) is selected and loaded automatically.

Bug#867148: Regression: After security update DSA-3896, EGroupware extraordinary slow

2017-07-04 Thread Peter Tuharsky
Package: apache2
Version: 2.4.10-10+deb8u9
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

after security update (I suspect the apache2 update DSA-3896),
the EGroupware suit is extraordinary slow (web app based on PHP+MySQL).
A page rendering now takes tens of seconds whereas it has been second or two
before.

Please, are there some changes in defaults as a part of the update changes?
What would You suggest in order to resolve the problem?

Bug#864389: squid: Regression - after upgrade, squid takes over minute to display a web page

2017-06-18 Thread Peter Tuharsky
Package: squid
Version: 3.5.23-5
Followup-For: Bug #864389

It seems, that the problem is only related to https pages. Maybe some default
or compile-time parameters have changed in recent update? Because now, Squid
cannot cope with https requests. If it would only pass them thru by default...
Now, because SSL support is not compiled in, it is not easy to cover it
otherwise...

Bug#864388: pulseaudio: Regression - sound audibly distorted for Creative Soundblaster Live

2017-06-08 Thread Peter Tuharsky
Package: pulseaudio
Version: 10.0-1
Followup-For: Bug #864388

Well, another news. I was unable to reproduce the former success. But now I
know, why I was unable to locate the buggy channel/switch.

I attempted to do it in LTSP thin client with Creative SB Live soundcard. When
I clicked "mute" button on main output fader in GNOME ALSA Mixer (ran locally
on client), all sound was off.

That's not surprising, but when I clicked the mute again, the button got
unchecked graphically but sound was NOT back. Only when I got into the GNOME
panel audio applet, which still signalised mute, I was able to bring the sound
back. On the other hand, when I left the MUTE ON in ALSA Mixer and then
disabled the mute on applet, it got instantly unchecked in ALSA mixer too.

So it seems, that GNOME ALSA Mixer is unable to reliably change a switch forth
and back.

That explains, why I was unable to get distortion back tonight, thus unable to
find the buggy channel/switch: only my first click (that disabled the switch)
worked as expected. My next clicks got ignored, despite the graphics.

Now I'm puzzled, why I'm unable to get rid of distortion on the thin client.
Possibly the ALSA Mixer fails also when I click on buggy channel/switch.

Bug#864388: pulseaudio: Regression - sound audibly distorted for Creative Soundblaster Live

2017-06-07 Thread Peter Tuharsky
Package: pulseaudio
Version: 10.0-1
Followup-For: Bug #864388

I have probably figured something out.

I have installed GNOME ALSA Mixer, since it reveals much more sound settings
than standard applet. I have tackled it for a while and found there some
channels signed for recording. I have muted all the recordings and the
distortion is gone.

The pitty thing is that I cannot figure out, which one it was. I attempted to
go up and down with faders and allow recording from channel to channel but the
distortion has not returned back. I even deleted the GNOME ALSA Mixer settings
from my profile, however the sound settings are probably stored also somewhere
else and have not returned to the defaults.

So, it would seem that there is some broken default in mixer settings for
Stretch that was correct before in Jessie. Now it's only difficult to say,
which one.

I have nothing connected to any input channel of soundcard, so there is no way
it could do something on output. The distortion only took place when playing
the sound file, not when there was no sound playing.

I just feel that it has been some strange, seemingly output channel marked for
recording (possibly some line out?), thus possibly returned by the mixer's
routing back to input, thus causing distortion of general output signal.

Is there a possibility to compare the default mixer settings in source code
from Jessie and Stretch, thus finding the difference? Or is there some other
way of knowing, what has changed since I saved new (and seemingly correct)
mixer settings?

Bug#864389: squid: Regression - after upgrade, squid takes over minute to display a web page

2017-06-07 Thread Peter Tuharsky
Package: squid
Version: 3.5.23-4
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I have been using squid for several weeks on my PC. Now it takes over minute to
display a web page. During the time, the page is not listed in log, only when
it is finally displayed, and I don't see any error there either. So it seems
that squid simply waits for something to time out. I would guess that problem
is related to some system update from previous week.

Bug#864388: pulseaudio: Regression - sound audibly distorted for Creative Soundblaster Live

2017-06-07 Thread Peter Tuharsky
Package: pulseaudio
Version: 10.0-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I have Creative Soundblaster Live PCI soundcard that I have been gladly using
for years. With Debian Jessie it still works fine. However, with Stretch there
is audible distortion on any playback, regardless on PCM or general volume. The
original sound is audible and articulated, however the distortion makes it
unpleasant.

I have tested playing the same files from command line on tty1 console using
"play" command, and the sound is OK from there. So it seems that kernel driver
is OK and only GNOME sound is affected, therefore I suspect Pulseaudio to be
the centre of trouble.

Tested with three different pieces of SB Live card of different branches, and
on two PCs.

Please, what could I do to workaround the problem until it gets fixed in
Debian?

Bug#860963: e2guardian does not start automatically at system startup

2017-05-24 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky
Well, from the short-time perspective, it seems that it Your advice helped.

Thank You.

However, Shouldn't this step be done automatically by package itself
during installation?

Bug#860399: Regression: DVB-T tuner cx23885 no longer works

2017-04-26 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky
Hi, Ben

Attaching the logs.

First, there are Debian Jessie logs for comparison (the system that
works), old and recent when DVB-T was successfully used. It seems that
the driver dosen't load firmware during boot process, instead it only
loads it when I attempted to use the DVB-T tuner. Interesting, that
althought it complains about missing firmware file, the device works.

Second, the Stretch logs. Part1 represents system startup, part2 is from
time when I attempted to use DVB-T tunerô as we can see, it complains
about firmware. Part3 shows the situation after applying a hack in order
to get the firmware into system. As can be seen, the firmware seems
loading correctly, however it dosen't help DVB-T device to work.

Package: e2guardian
Version: 3.4.0.3-1

Dear Maintainer,

I'm attempting to run e2guardian. I have succesfully installed the package, set
up configuration so that it can be started manually using the script in
/etc/init.d and it works.

However, the daemon does not start during system startup. I even don't see a
line in syslog.

What could be wrong?

Bug#860399: Regression: DVB-T tuner cx23885 no longer works

2017-04-15 Thread Peter Tuharsky
Package: src:linux
Version: 4.9.18-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

since the times of Debian Lenny or so, I have been using a DVB-T tuner PCI
card, autodetected as Hauppauge WinTV-HVR1200 (but may also be another clone),
based on popular Conexant Systems CX23885 chip.

Now with Debian Stretch, the device no longer works - it is not detected in
Kaffeine, it cannot tune a channel from commandline.

I feel that something in kernel might have changed recently that broke the
driver, because after April 10. (possibly after installation of Stretch
updates), messages in syslog changed.

Today the cx23885 driver attempts to load firmware file dvb-fe-tda10048-1.0.fw
and fails.

This is strange. According to syslog (and Jessie syslog too), never before the
kernel wrote a line about loading any firmware file for cx23885. And I have not
found such file in any Debian package in repository.

Moreover, I have manually downloaded the file, and now it IS loaded by kernel
(according to syslog), but the device still dosen't work.

Might it be some mis-detection issue?

2017-04-04 Thread Peter Tuharsky
Package: ltsp-server

Dear Maintainer,

in Debian Jessie I was able to run ltsp-localapps qjackctl which was fully
functional. Together with Qsynth I was able to tech children music on thin
clients.

Now, in Debian Stretch, if I run

ltsp-localapps qjackctl

the desktop freezes. I am able to switch to thin client's commandline console
and shut down the running qjackctl process. The desktop unfreezes immediately.
However, qjackctl is useless this way.

2017-04-04 Thread Peter Tuharsky
Package: ltsp-server
Version: 5.5.9-2
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

in Debian Jessie, user was able to log in regardless of how the previous
session ended up, even incorrectly. Moreover, the session could have been still
running and the user was able to log in again on another terminal.

In Stretch, this is no longer possible. If session ended up incorrectly
(terminal client freeze, or user powered the terminal off without logging in),
the user is unable to log in anywhere anymore, even locally on the server.
Login is possible again only after server reboot.

Bug#800524: xserver-xorg-video-radeon: Jessie / AMD A6 7400K / Radeon R5 - black screen instead of X started

2015-09-30 Thread Peter Tuharsky
Package: xserver-xorg-video-radeon
Version: 1:7.5.0-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

first, let me thank You for doing Your work for Debian.

I have Installed Debian Jessie. The first time, the X started in VESA regime
with all consequences (useless video, no 3D acceleration).
In order to get the VGA detected correctly, I have installed
firmware-linux-nonfree.

Now after reboot, the X does not even start, there is just a black screen.
Xorg.log shows that RADEON driver (correct, I suppose) is being used now.
Fortunately, tty works so I'm reporting the bug from console.

I've been using AMD A4 7300 w/ Radeon 8470 before and everything works there
like a charm.
I'm bitterly surprised that the "better" chip is barely functional in Debian.
What should I do?

Sincerely,
Peter

Bug#800003: samba-common-bin: samba-tool classic update w/LDAP - parsing error

2015-09-25 Thread Peter Tuharsky
Package: samba-common-bin
Version: 2:4.1.17+dfsg-2
Severity: important
Tags: upstream patch

Dear Maintainer,

I have encountered a problem with classicupdate with previous LDAP backend.
The process goes normal, occasional "group already exists" etc.

But it ends up with an error:

ERROR(): uncaught exception - unable to
parse dn string
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/samba/netcmd/__init__.py", line
175, in _run
return self.run(*args, **kwargs)
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/samba/netcmd/domain.py", line
1321, in run
useeadb=eadb, dns_backend=dns_backend, use_ntvfs=use_ntvfs)
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/samba/upgrade.py", line 903, in
upgrade_from_samba3
add_group_from_mapping_entry(result.samdb, g, logger)
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/samba/upgrade.py", line 274, in
add_group_from_mapping_entry
m.dn = ldb.Dn(samdb, "CN=%s,CN=Users,%s" % (groupmap.nt_name,
samdb.get_default_basedn()))

I have consulted the error in Samba mailing list (23.9.2015 10:42).
Andrew Bartlett has proposed a patch (24.9.2015 at 9:57).
I asked for help (documentation), since I have no experience
with patching the distributional Samba, therefore I'm not sure
that I will do that correctly, thus unable to guarantee proper patch
testing.
L.P.H. van Belle (24.9.2015 12:49) suggested me to ask the package maintainer.

So I'm asking here. Please, could You apply the Andrew's patch and send me
the .deb so that I could test the patch? It could help correct the bug in
upstream.

Sincerely,
Peter

Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

The panel, menu Apps, tree Favorites.

I would assume that the tree will update automatically and will list those apps

However the apps there are static, they remain there eventhough I don't use
them, and other hand, there don't appear apps that I use regullary.

Moreover, this tree in Apps menu is not editable with gnome-tweak-tool.

Bug#760983: minetest: Mods don't apply. What is the proper way?

2014-09-09 Thread Peter Tuharsky
Package: minetest
Version: 0.4.6+repack-6
Severity: normal

Hi,

I'm trying to use mods with Mitetest. However, there is no change in gameplay,
and the mods are not visible in the configuration menu. Seems like they are
completely ignored.

Example: Naturepack mod from
https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?f=13t=729
I unpack the archive into ~/.minetest/mods/
The archive contains a neko259-nature. directory that I rename to
naturepack so that I have now
~/.minetest/mods/naturepack/
with mod files inside. The mod is said to be tested on minetest version 0.4.4
so should run on 0.4.6 I hope.

There might be a bug in mods support. Or am I doing something wrong? I don't
even know whether the minetest in Debian is compiled with mods support, and in
that case, where and how the mods should be placed in order to get active.
Google offers no useful idea for me.

This is a bit of a long shot, but try setting in lts.conf:

It may be issues with 16-bit color depth, which is the default for thin

Confirming. It's really difficult to select a GNOME-based environment for LTSP

2013-03-31 Thread Peter Tuharsky
Package: debootstrap
Version: 1.0.44

Vagrant,

thanks for reply. Both mirrors You gave don't work, ltsp-build-client ends with
error such as:

E: unknown location http.debian.net/debian/dists/wheezy/InRelease
error: LTSP client installation ended abnormally

I don't see any reason for marking the bug wishlist. For now the ltsp-server-
standalone package is not working at all for some users, depending on
redirector. I think serious is more than appropriate.

Bug#704190: ltsp-server-standalone: ltsp-build-client fails because of error in packages downloading stage

2013-03-29 Thread Peter Tuharsky
Package: ltsp-server-standalone
Version: 5.4.2-5
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Running the ltsp-build-client --arch i386
dosen't generate valid client image, thus rendering the ltsp package useless. I
suspect that there is either problem with missing apt commandline parameter, or
with invalid GPG signature, or both.

Bug#236227: mozilla-firefox: /etc/papersize should be consulted for the default paper size for printing

2013-03-28 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky
Package: iceweasel-l10n-sk
Version: 1:10.0.12esr-1
Followup-For: Bug #236227

Bug still occurs with Debian Wheezy. Very annoying, since nobody prints letter
format here in SK, thus papersize must be manually changed to A4 every time one
is printing from Iceweasel. Otherwise printer hangs up with some kind of bad
paper size error, stopping the whole print queue, with obvious problems
connected to cancelling the print job, You all know what I'm talking about...

Furthermore, Iceweasel ignores not only /etc/papersize, but also the
environment locale settings, such as LC_PAPER=sk_SK.UTF-8
I'm not sure, whether should I fill another, separate bug for the instance, or
this one is enough.

I think this is also matter of localization package, because the wrong paper
size (letter) is visible in about:config page and I hope the localization
package should take care of all aspects of localization.

Bug#703622: gdm3 dosen't show login screen when authentication via LDAP is enabled

2013-03-21 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky
Package: gdm3
Version: 3.4.1-6
Severity: important

Hallo,

I have installed Debian Wheezy RC1 x64 and while authenticating locally, GDM3
worked fine. As soon as I switched to LDAP-based authentication, GDM3 dosen't
even display login screen, only clocked cursor on blank black background. I
also tried applying config files that worked well with Squeeze, with no effect.
Login from shell and SSH works fine. Eventually I have installed lightdm and it
works well. Therefore I assume this is GDM3 related bug.

Bug#664051: squid3: Frequent DOS due to extreme memory consuption of Squid3

2012-03-15 Thread Peter Tuharsky
Package: squid3
Version: 3.1.6-1.2+squeeze2
Severity: important

Our proxy serves some 300+ users. Recently we moved to Debian Squeeze with
Squid 3, however are not satisfied with the performance at all: sometimes Squid
3 process consumes over 5GB memory itself, so that with other services
(Dansguardian, ClamAV), even 6GB of RAM is not enought and the machine starts
swapping heavily (even over 2GB) and web pages stop being served (DOS). This
happens few times per week. Usually the Squid 3 process is well over 3GB in
size! Before, we used a Debian Lenny with Squid (2.x) and there has never been
problem like this, despite machine having only 4GB of RAM. Now it seems that at
least 8GB would be necessarry, however this is unacceptable and we consider
switching back to Squid 2.x instead.

Bug#633651: samba: Regression after security update - linux client unable to delete files

2011-07-12 Thread tuharsky
Package: samba
Version: 2:3.5.6~dfsg-3squeeze4
Severity: important

Recently I have installed security upgrade that has replaced version
...squeeze2 by ...squeeze4. I have not run the installation automatic script
over samba config files because they are split to several parts.
Now I cannot delete any file from samba share using linux samba client, even
the file that has been created by the same user and the same client just
before. I don't use any extended ACLs, sticky bits or so.
I don't see any problem using WindowsXP clients.

Sincerely
Peter Tuharsky

Bug#632182: psutils: psnup - unable to select output format, american letter hardwired

2011-06-30 Thread tuharsky
Package: psutils
Version: 1.17-26
Severity: important
Tags: l10n

I'm trying to convert a ps file to brochure. The file has been already
processed by psbook, the file is in a4
format. Now trying to perform a final step with
psnup -q -2 input.ps output.ps

Whatever I do, the output file is in american letter format, text is cut off on
the border of page.

Using the -Pa4 and p4a parameter makes no difference.
I also edited by hand the file /etc/papersize and replaced the letter by a4
- no difference at all.

It seems that psnup takes the paper size from somewhere and dosen't mind the
user's preferences.

Sincerely
Peter Tuharsky

Bug#447988: egroupware missing bitstream vera font, JPGraph broken

2007-10-25 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

Package: egroupware
Version: 1.4.002.dfsg-1

eGroupWare ships with Bitstream font, that is placed inside
projectmanager/inc directory for purposes of JPGraph.

Debian package is missing the font, thus the Projectmanager's graph
functionality is completely broken until admin copies the font manually.

Bug#446054: cdcat -crashing when not saved frequently

2007-10-10 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

Package: cdcat
Version: 1.01b-1

Cdcat crashes, usually on editation of media label, description and so on.

It seems, that saving frequently helps preventing the crashes. So I
assume that some kind of buffer gets filled or whatever. For example, if
I add new medium, change the description, add another medium, and so on,
after 2 or 3 media it crashes. However, if I save after each one, it
dosen't crash.

Bug#410028: cdcat segfaults often upon reading a cd

2007-10-09 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

Hi,

I have tested the cdcat that You have sent me. It no longer crashes on
AVI files so far, much better this way than the distributional version.

However, it still crashes. Usually on editation of media label,
description and so on.

It seems, that saving frequently helps preventing the crashes. So I

I add new medium, change the description, add another medium, and so on,

I hope this could be helpful..

Bug#440273: openoffice.org -errors with StarWriter 5.0 documents

2007-08-31 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

package: openoffice.org
version: 2.0.4.dfsg.2-5etch1

When I try to save a document in Star Writer 5.0 .sdw format, I got an error
Error saving the document.

When I try to open .sdw Star Office document in OpenOffice.org, first
the OOo shows a dialogue as if it didn't know, how should he treat the
file. It offers me to choose the file format.
I choose Star Writer 5.0, however OOo displays General I/O error and
dosen't open the document.

The bugs have been reported for OpenOffice.org (80451, 80452) however
seem to be related just to Debian and Ubuntu.

Sounds like the init script is working just fine; your server either
has a

configuration problem or something else is preventing TLS initialization
from succeeding.

The error here indicates user error in configuring TLS in slapd.conf,
and is not indicative of an error in the script. Generally, check that
all paths to the certs referenced are correct, and that the slapd user
has permissions to read them.

Bug#416272: slapd -distributional script not working)

2007-07-30 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky
Well, the error was the permissions. Once the .pem files got the
openldap group and g+r permissions, it starts using the distributional
scripts well.

Although there is no obvious bug in the scripts, I really think that the
error should be reported clearly. Just if it spit out some insufficient
privilegues on certificate files error, everything would be alright.
The error messages are cryptic and useless currently.

Bug#434601: kernel -switching scsi devices on boot, unable to automount on startup

2007-07-25 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

Package: kernel-image-2.6-686-smp
Version: 2.6.18+6

I have dual Opteron server based on TYAN S2882-D Thunder K8SD Pro
mainboard. Disks are IDE, SATA, SATA, SCSI RAID 5 on Adaptec 2130S PCI-X
controller.

When booting standard kernel, I cannot have SATA and SCSI disks mounted
automatically from fstab. Seems, that in the middle of booting process,
the SCSI disks simply switch their positions.

First the SATA takes sda+sdb and SCSI takes sdc until the time of fsck.
Then, upon mounting, SATA takes sdb+sdc and SCSI moves to sda.

As the disks have different partitioning, I get either fsck errors or
mount errors, whatever I set the fstab.

The only way is to disable automatic mounting and perform the mound
manually after the whole bootup process.

If I use custom compiled all-in-one kernel (without modules), everything
keeps stable: SCSI takes sda, SATA takes sdb+sdc, definitely.

I attach kernel log files from Debian (2.6.18) and from custom
(2.6.19.2) kernel.

Bug#434332: Multiple instances of Squid problematic winh init.d scripts

2007-07-23 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

Package: squid
Version: 2.6.5-6

Hi,

I'm trying to make 2 instances of Squid running at the same machine. I
edited the config file in order to make it listen on different ports,
and also changed the /etc/init.d script; I copied the original file to
/etc/init.d/squid1 and squid2 and edited the NAME= line to reflect
squid1 resp. squid2. Also edited the link to config file in both scripts.

Now, when I try to run them, they compain that Squid is already
running. Why that? The PID files should differ, because they depend on
the $NAME and I changed that!

2007-06-15 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

I understand. However, would you consider building the alpha
and run a commandline test for me? Then we'll know if there is
an issue to fix. You can run squidGuard from the command line
without putting it online. I do this all the time on my server. The
way to do it is like this:
echo
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/latest-2.0/win32/sk/Thunderbird

Setup 2.0.0.4.exe 127.0.0.1/ - - GET | squidGuard -dc
$confdir/squidGuard.conf

I could try.

However, please, could You send me an expression that SHOULD work for
matching the exe files? Or the one I posted should work really?

Bug#428666: squidGuard -dosen't filter files based on expressions

2007-06-15 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

I compiled it.

1,
When I use %20's instead of escaped spacebars, I run
echo
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/latest-2.0/win32/sk/Thunderbird%20Setup%202.0.0.4.exe
127.0.0.1/ - - GET | /usr/local/bin/squidGuard -dc
/etc/squid/squidGuard.conf

The last lines I get are:

2007-06-15 12:00:13 [15441] squidGuard 1.3-alpha started (1181901613.633)
2007-06-15 12:00:13 [15441] recalculating alarm in 1787 seconds

2007-06-15 12:00:13 [15441] squidGuard stopped (1181901613.767)

This, I assume, means that page passed. BAD.

BAD again, because it wrongly redirects to message regarding other
blocking rule, not the executable (that should redirect to other message
page). I tested old squidguard too, and it does the same.

However, the file is downloaded if the path I put in the browser! I
don't understand why it dosen't display at least the wrong message, but
instead it offers file download!!
I suspect that spacebar symbols are confusing it. When I look at status
bar in Firefox, there are two spacebars in the name of file. When I use
copy the link address and paste it here, look:

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/latest-2.0/win32/sk/Thunderbird%20Setup%202.0.0.4.exe

%20 is used instead of spacebar. And as shown in example 1, the
squidGuard PASSES the file with %20's
There is something wrong with the spacebars somewhere in the way inside
browser-squid-squidguard.

***
3,
When I run other file
echo ftp://ftp://ftp.elf.stuba.sk/pub/pc/pack/acdzip.exe 127.0.0.1/ -
- GET | /usr/local/bin/squidGuard -dc /etc/squid/squidGuard.conf

I get

2007-06-15 12:04:39 [15573] Request(bezne/exec/-)

2007-06-15 12:04:39 [15573] squidGuard stopped (1181901879.032)

This is GOOD, that's how it should be.

When I look into squidclamav.log, the Thunderbird file contains %20's.
The same in squid access.log
And as I demonstrated in example 1, squidGuard behaves wrongly when
facing the %20's in the file name, he downloads the file.

works now.

However, it shouldn't happen I think.

Oops, not right. When I put the name with escaped spacebars into

Althought, this again dosen't show any signs of suidGuard filter
interception, just a wrong URL error. And it SHOULD have been filtered

Bug#428666: squidGuard -dosen't filter files based on expressions

2007-06-13 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

Package: squidguard
Version: 1.2.0-8.2

We use squidGuard to filter unwanted domains, urls and file types.

I don't know exactly, when it happened, however squidGuard no longer
filters files based on expression (It did before!). For example, we need
to filter out executable files. We use this rule:

dest exec {
domainlist custom/exec/domains
expressionlist custom/exec/expressions
redirect http://10.2.2.29/proxy/upozor-video.html
log exec.log
}

The expressions file in custom/exec looks like this:
(.*)(cab|com|exe|img|iso|ocx|cpl)($|\?)

The domains-based blocking works, moreover the expressions based porn
blocking works. However, I can't simply block files by their suffix. Am
I doing something wrong?

Bug#416273: slapd -Not starting if ldap logs exist

2007-06-04 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

This generally indicates a permission issue. If, for example, you run

slapd as root and then later try to run it as another user, or if you
change what user you're running slapd as, you need to change the ownership
of all of the files in /var/lib/ldap to match the user you're running
slapd as.

It's strange, yes, some files are created by openldap user, while others
are root's. However, I don't know, why should slapd have any problems
with root's files. We run slapd by custom script (because of bug
416272), that contains just /usr/bin/slapd, thus it should run as root,
shouldn't? And we met the problems also when running slapd manually from
root's console.

All in all, I'd expect, that problems with file permissions should the
slapd report in meaningful way, not the database is corrupted one.

Could you check and see if that's the problem that you're having? (And
was this also the source of the problem you reported in #416272, to which
I just responded?)

I'll try, however this is a production system, it's quite hard to stop
slapd. I'll try building other machine and moving the files there to
see. Probably in next 2 weeks.

Sincerely
Peter

brokenness.

Please, suggest the right debug level that I should use.

Bug#411042: [Pkg-samba-maint] Bug#411042: samba -dosen't connect to OpenLDAP

2007-03-05 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

Hi

I haven't found log messages from smbd die.

It's quite difficult to do some real testing, because this is our
production server. However I'll try it probably in Thursday.

Are there any log messages when the smbd dies?

I haven't found any. I'll try it again.

And all of these other clients are configured to use starttls?

AFAIK, no. I haven't found TLS startup in libnss-ldap.conf or pam_ldap.conf

How do you have libldap configured to verify the SSL certificates? If you
try to connect to the server with ldapsearch, do you get the same error?
Please, specify, what kind of info do You need here. I don't understand
that.

E.g., an /etc/ldap/ldap.conf on another system I know uses starttls has this
line:

  TLS_CACERT /etc/ldap/cacert.pem

On server, yes, there is such a line.

Do you have a similar configuration ensuring the integrity of the SSL
connection? (It sounds like you must, if other clients connect
successfully, but I just want to be sure.)

How could I prove it?

And if you connect to the LDAP server using ldapsearch -ZZ -h vedko6.misbb.sk,
does it connect successfully?

I'll try.

Cheers,

Bug#411042: Info received (Bug#411042: [Pkg-samba-maint] Bug#411042: samba -dosen't connect to OpenLDAP)

2007-02-20 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

We have successfully workarounded the issue.

We have set the passdb backend to

ldapsam:ldap://localhost:389;

Now it works. Excepting that there are annoying errors in log:

[2007/02/20 14:30:23, 0] lib/util_sock.c:get_peer_addr(1229)
getpeername failed. Error was Transport endpoint is not connected

The error we remember from some combination of previous versions of
Samba and Openldap. It disappeared in later combination, however it
seems to have comeback with Etch.

Sincerely
Peter

Could you please post your smb.conf?

Of course. Here You are.

Ok, nothing seems out of the ordinary here, that's too bad -- no easy answer
here.

The odd thing (no easy answers TM) is, that despite of the errors in
log, the Samba domain WORKS for a little while. Machines and users log
on, as if nothing happened. Users get authenticated, network shares are
connected. After several tens of seconds (minute or so) smbd dies and
domain dies with it.

The second odd thing is, that the very LDAP works well too. We can
authenticate against LDAP server from SMTP, IMAP and eGroupWare, and
local machine user's logon using PAM-LDAP. Just when we run Samba on the
server to allow Windows domain logons, the Samba acts as described above..

passdb backend = ldapsam:ldap://vedko6.misbb.sk:389;

Are the quotes necessary here? I'm not sure that removing them would make
any difference.

We'll try to remove the quotes, however it works with them in Sarge well.

# takze to vraj ma byt bez podtrhovnika start tls:

ldap ssl = start tls

Well, that seems it really ought to be sufficient, yes.

How do you have libldap configured to verify the SSL certificates? If you
try to connect to the server with ldapsearch, do you get the same error?

Please, specify, what kind of info do You need here. I don't understand

Tomorow, we will try to remove the TLS, since the LDAP and Samba domain
are running on the same machine. As TLS encrypts just the communication
between them (hopefully, AFAIK???), it seems it is not needed there
(???). This is just a workaround however, and not everybody can afford it.

Sincerely
Peter

Bug#411042: samba -dosen't connect to OpenLDAP

2007-02-15 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

package: samba
version: 3.0.24-2

We've had a working Samba/LDAP domain based on Sarge. Now we're trying
to move to Etch. We recycled old configs, or modified the new ones to be
equal.

Now, when I start Samba, it seems it cannot connect the LDAP server.
I've got these errors in log:

lib/smbldap.c:smb_ldap_start_tls(612)
Failed to issue the StartTLS instruction: Connect error
lib/smbldap.c:another_ldap_try(1150)
Connection to LDAP server failed for the 1 try!

Soon, the smbd exits.
The SLAPD works fine itself, even the authentication goes against it.
Just the SMBD cannot connect to it.

I'm googling s while and I found this link:
http://www.ldap.org.br/pipermail/ldap-l/2004-July/000852.html

Was the Samba compiled with correct attributes?

I really don't know, whether this is package error, config error, or
OpenLDAP/libgnutls13/Samba communication error.

Bug#410908: egroupware -new upstream version available

2007-02-14 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

Package: egroupware
Severity: wishlist

The egroupware has a new upstream version 1.2.106 that already takes
place in unstable.
Could it make it into stable? We use it on daily basis and the version
seems better than 1.2.105. Since the development of 1.4 is finishing,
the 1.2 series already is in freeze status with no new functions
added, just backported bugfixes.. I think it is pretty much stable though.

Bug#410908: closed by Peter Eisentraut [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Re: Bug#410908: egroupware -new upstream version available)

2007-02-14 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

Hi

I have searched the mailing lists and it would seem quite funny, if it
could.

Do You all mean it?

We use EGroupWare 1.2.106 on daily basis, with Debian Etch and even
Debian Sarge, and we see it as vastly superior release, compared to 1.2.105.

Needless to say, that new stable version is arising, 1.4, so that in
upstream, the 1.2 will be for sure just bugfixed and security
maintained, if either. The upstream autors don't have resources to do more.

I have always be using the upstream version, however I appreciate the
Debian packages, despite of their archaism. They allowed me to install
the EGroupWare quite simply, with all dependencies, and then just move
to upstream.

I don't think that abandoning EGroupWare entirely for Etch is good idea.
I also don't think that including the upstream version is bad idea.

The old, inferior and barely maintained upstream PHPGroupware resides
there, and the superior ancestor -the EgroupWare -is being kicked out
just because of far-from-perfect development model of Debian.

Please reconsider.

Peter

Bug#399695: audacity -Czech menus invisible

2007-01-04 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

Severity: important

I suspect there is broader problem in some GUI libraries of Debian Etch,
however cannot find out, what -my experience with X and GNOME is not so
deep.

Today I'm trying to run totally different program, the Lingea dictionary
based on Lexicon 2002. It is commercial software, well-known dictionary
and lexicon, that offers Linux port too.

I found out, that this software has also problems with displaying
diacritical symbols! Menu items are also invisible! However, it works
perfectly under Sarge!

It seems for me, that both Audacity and the Lingea make usage of some
GUI functions that are corrupted in current versions of GUI libraries so
that they don't display the whole text if any diacritical symbol is
found inside.

I cannot say for sure, however this could also have security impact.
Since there is probably a bug in strings processing, it comes to
question, whether is this buffer-overflow-exploitable.

I will provide any necessarry assistance that I'm able of.

Sincerely
Peter

Bug#402762: debian-installer dosen't detect Broadcom BCM5704 Gigabit LAN

2006-12-17 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

Hallo,

is there any chance of fixing this before stable release? Or is it able
to force installer somehow to detect the NIC?

Peter

Bug#402762: debian-installer dosen't detect Broadcom BCM5704 Gigabit LAN

2006-12-12 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

Package: debian-installer
Version: 20061102

I'm trying to install Debian Etch at TYAN GT24 (2891) server machine.
Installer dosen't detect the onboard Broadcom BCM5704 ethernet. Since
the Linux kernel dos have the driver (tg3 AFAIK), I wonder why the card
isn't detected. Even if I specify the driver from the list, it dosen't
detect the card.

I tested with SUSE 10 and it detects the NICs with no problems.

Bug#402109: gnome-volume-control -pcm fader missing, soundcard cannot play

2006-12-07 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

Package: gnome-media
Version: 2.14.3-1

The gnome-volume-control is missing fader for regulation of PCM. Since
it is lowered to zero by default, soundcard de facto dosen't play any
digital audio.

Using kmix or aumix, the fader is there. However, the GNOME default
mixer is gnome-volume-control. If I was a newbie user, I'd assume that
soundcard dosent work in Linux.

I use OSS soundcard, however I've got similar problems with older GNOME
(Sarge) and ALSA soundcard Creative SoundBlaster 128 PCI.

Bug#399826: icedove asks for profile after every start, Thunderbird never did this

2006-12-06 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

I think I got it.

The Icedove is run by
icedove -P

in the GNOME. I didn't make it, it was installed this way automatically.
If I remove the -P then Icedove starts normally. I'd assume the -P
forces profile selection mode.

So there might be a bug in the ackage. Please check the execution
parameters for GNOME.

I have been using the Mozilla Thunderbird. With the last upgrade, it has
been replaced by icedove.

The icedove asks for profile selection after every start. The Mozilla
Thunderbird was never doing this. It is very annoying. Checking don't
ask again dosen't help.

OK ... lets pick this up again ...

1. can you verify that the problem exists if you run

  # icedove

command from some shell/console/xterm?

2. can you verify that the problem is still there if you run

  # icedove -safe-mode

??

3. Can you verify that this problem does *not* exist if you create a
new user-account (linux-account) and run icedove when logged into that
account?

Thanks,

 - Alexander

Bug#399826: icedove asks for profile after every start, Thunderbird never did this

2006-12-06 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

You're right! That was the problem. The icons are similar, and since I
has been quite concerned by the mere replacement of the TB, I haven't
noticed the difference, since I never met IceDove before.

I'm happy we solved it finally :-)

You can close it, or is there some even more distinct icon for the
profile manager?

Sincerely
Peter

Hmmm ... this sounds weird. I run gnome too: There are two menu
entries:

 1. Applications - Internet - Icedove Mail Client
 2. Applications - Internet - Icedove Profile Manager

The latter is launched with -P; the former without. Do you use the
menu entries to launch thunderbird? Maybe you added thunderbird
launcher to the panel at some point and added -P by hand some day and
just can't remember?

Bug#401858: gnome-screensaver -focus lost after bad password and other circumstances

2006-12-06 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

Package: gnome-screensaver
Version: 2.14.3-3

If I let the GNOME to fall to screensaver, and then try to gain access
to machine, password is required.

If I do enter bad password, I'm noticed that password is incorrect and
the window opens to re-enter the password.

However, there is no focus in the password column, so that password
cannot be entered in fact. Of course, one can help himself and put the
focus manually there, however this is quite annoying. Moreover, the
focus is lost even on other circumstances, i.e. if bad key is pressed
to recover from monitor sleep.

I can imagine my users complaining about that behaviour.

Is there a way to avoid this odd thing?

Sincerely

Peter

Bug#401860: gnome-screensaver -enable more screensavers

2006-12-06 Thread Mgr. Peter Tuharsky

Package: gnome-screensaver
Version: 2.14.3-3

I see that gnome-screensaver is the default for GNOME. However, there
are quite few screensavers under the hood. In comparison, the
xscreensaver offers dozens of funny screensavers.

I know that this is a cosmetic issue, however users like the bells and
whistles much, so I have a question:

I don't want to break the integrated environment, I hope the gnome
screensaver is doing its job and fits better to GNOME than old
xscreensaver. Is there a way to re-use these amazing screensavers in
gnome-screensaver too?

Sincerely
Peter
