If one creates daily reports at seperate sheets and want to collect the 
reports for one year in one document then this enhancement is very useful.
When do older versions of AOO warn “This document was created with a 
newer version? […]” Must the main version number increased for such a 
change?

I am puzzled a little bit about the idea of "loyalty to the original"
OpenOffice.

1. The original OpenOffice.org was operated by a proprietary company,
although the code was made available as open-source.  But ownership
was held by Sun Microsystems for their proprietary purposes.  There
was great value to OpenOffice.org, but not so much because it was
open-source.  I think key benefits were support for ODF format,
multiple-platform support, and degree of support for Microsoft
formats.  There was no open-source governance in this arrangement.

When LibreOffice forked that code, as the license allowed, some were
unhappy in any case.

2. When Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems, OpenOffice.org became their
property in the same manner as at Sun.

3. When Oracle concluded that continuation of OpenOffice.org was not
in their interests, they chose to grant the ASF a license to use the
code base and to provide it under a license of the ASF's choosing
(always Apache License of course).  This is how Apache OpenOffice
arose.  AOO became Apache Project after being in Apache Incubator.
People interested in supporting OpenOffice.org signed-up to
contribute to the incubator and some formed the original Project
Management Committee for AOO.  AOO has always been an Apache
Project.

What "original OpenOffice" is thought of here?


The „original“ was StarOffice. And yes, you described right the way of 
the „original“ OpenOffice – as I understand it as a user (with many 
contacts to StarDivision/Sun/Oracle) using StarOffice/OpenOffice for 
over 20 years.

I thought about this a little. I think to mix up both behaviours is not
simple anymore for users. I dislike the implicity of the approach. For a
new user it is not transperent that OpenOffice will take the recent
document into account.


Hmm. Have you ever used the URL field? Since it is hidden per default I 
think that most users don't know what they could do with this.


There would be no new mixup. If you click at the arrow of the dropdown 
box you get a long history. But If you write inside the URL bar you will 
get (only) autocomplete results for your file system – but for this you 
must type the complete path. If you type something that not begins with 
a path/URL identifier you get nothing. And at this point AOO should 
simply look into the history what filenames matches with this input.




what I could imagine would be a virtual folder Recent documents, that
would contain a list with all entries from recent document List. You can
work with this folder and search as you are used to.


Why? This list exists inside the URL field!

I think the number of entrys should be configurable in the settings.


If you thinking in this direction I have also a suggestion.

I have the “Load URL” field visible inside the Standard tool bar. This 
have many advantages:

1. A very longer history.
2. AutoCompletion for URLs. (directories/file)
3. Because under Ubuntu it is impossible to open files by dragging it 
from the file manager to the title bar (like under Windows), I can drag 
the file to the URL field and hit [Enter].


But I have a wish for this:
It would be very(!) nice if I could begin to write a filename and the 
URL field would suggest/list the hits in the history.




I also often move my files after editing.
When I click on the list of recently opened files most of them are not
accessible any more.


For the URL field I wish it like in firefox:
scroll to the desired entry and press ([Shift]+)[Del].

Yes. But this autocompleteing works at your file system (this is good!) 
but not for the history.

recent Document list?

Not really. In a Linux/Unix system a path always begins with / (in 
Windows with :\).

So my proposal is:

1. The behaviour of now (leave it unchanged):¹
If one type the beginning of a path → autocompletion.
Please consider that you can change the offer with cursor up/down.
Example: If you write »/D« AOO completes to »/Documents« 
with »ocuments« highlighted. Press [↓] it will change to 
»/Downloads« with »ownloads« highlighted. Or open ([Alt]+[↓]) the 
dropdown list with the matching paths/filenames.
Select the desired folder with [↓]/[↑] and press [→]. Repeat until you 
have selected the right file and press [Enter].



2.  Additional(!) behaviour (wish):
If one type the beginning of a filename (without any path 
identification) /then/ there should open a dropdown with the matching 
/filenames/ from the history.

Example: If you write »m« open a list with
|/minions.odt
|/minions2.ods
|/my file1.odt
|[…] aso.
With the next letter the search will refined.
With [↓]/[↑] one can go through the list and press [Enter] for the 
selected entry. Or simply click on it with the mouse cursor.



Number 1 works (as I know) only for the file system.
Number 2 respects all protocols (http, ftp, …) you have used and which 
are in the history.

¹ At the moment there seems to be a bug.
If one types the beginning of a path and one afterward delete this 
input, the history doesn't come back – there stays the list with the 
matching paths/files.

Many companies need to import MS document formats. They don't have the
choice to teach all customers to send an other document format.


That might be the case in the United States, but in Europe, the legal
requirement is to use ODF file formats.


I can only speak for my experiences in Germany. Maybe they /should/ use 
ODF – but in most cases it will simply ignored.

Create a new dialog in the Basic IDE or open an existing dialog. (Please 
note that the dialogs that comes with AOO are loaded in read-only mode. 
So you don't can open the properties for a control.)

When I have a personal document (odt) with hyperlinks in it (copied
from another personal on-line document), I suggest software
capability increase to allow a person to click on the document (odt)
and then right-click to show the added software to remove all
hyperlinks.


Simply highlight all text and use
Format → Default Formatting.

Example Two--When I make a list of my
passwords using ODT, any hyperlink shows up as a type my email
address.  I used to stop before the ".net"  but now I type it and
select it and remove hyperlink.  Still difficult because of mouse
communicating to s/w which can re-arrange my typing.

You all talking about the standalone product. It is a good point but 
only a piece.
Many companies need to import MS document formats. They don't have the 
choice to teach all customers to send an other document format.

So for the acceptance there is a big need to improve the import filters.
As I remember this was the most important topic before IMB left the AOO 
community.
And this is also a big problem for many, many users and companies 
(government, insurance, advocate, handicraft and so on), who are working 
with special software which is producing files in MS document formats.

Many software uses explicit MSO to produce this files.
For this clientele mostly all features that AOO provides is enough, 
mostly more as enough - BUT import of MS document format and/or using 
AOO as front-end for the specialised software is missing and is the main 
reason against AOO.

New value "future" for version in IssueZilla

Can we have a new value "future" ("none" or something other) for the 
field Version in IssueZilla to use for ENHANCEMENT requests?


What does not exist has no version number, right?
If anyone grab the issue and is working on it then he should change the 
value to the desired version.

4.1.4 show stopper! (was: 4.1.4 RC4: synchronize labels don't work on MacOS)

Even on Linux.

Problem: linked sections will not be updated if the original section is 
changed.


The button [Synchronise Labels] do nothing other than Tools… → Update → 
Links (or Tools… → Update → Update All).


Simply
1. create a new text document
2. insert a section with content
3. insert a section as link to the first section
4. change the content of the first section

5. Tools… → Update → Links
or Tools… → Update → Update All

=> Nothing happens. :-(

A patch for *all* platforms must also be tested in all ways. So I think, 
this way isn't an easy and good way.

Simply let 4.1.4 as is but don't let it (official) free.
Create a 4.1.5-RC1 (or maybe 4.1.4-RC5 if possible) with this patch, and 
if no further errors announce 4.1.5.

I have still to understand the importance of this bug too - I assume

[Übersetzung] Verzeichnisse

Hallo!

In der aktuellen Version wird im Writer die englische Bezeichnung 
Indexes and Tables wortwörtlich zu Verzeichnisse und Tabellen 
übersetzt. Das halte ich für sehr irreführend und falsch.


Das englischen Table of Contents ist im Deutschen ein 
Inhaltsverzeichnis. Insofern sollte man auch bei den Menüeinträgen 
wieder einfach zu Verzeichnis zurückkehren.


Aktuell betroffen:
Einfügen → Verzeichnisse
Extras → Aktualisieren… → Alle Verzeichnisse

Schwebender Rahmen nichts sagt. In früheren Versionen hieß das
einfach
Frame; im Englischen wird es zur Unterscheidung von einem Textrahmen
Floating Frame genannt.


Geschichte: Neben reinen HTML-Dokumenten konnte StarOffice auch
HTML-Framesets erzeugen. Für HTML-Unkundige: Ein Frameset definiert ein
(starres) Gerüst aus mehreren Rahmen (Fenstern), in welche dann
einzelne
HTML-Seiten geladen werden. Ist heute kaum noch gebräuchlich.

Um dieses starre Gerüst aufzuheben und neben HTML auch andere Inhalte
mitten in ein HTML-Dokument laden zu können, wurde bei MS der iFrame
erfunden. Ein solcher Frame sitzt mitten im Text und fließt mit ihm
mit.
(→ floating frame) Ein solcher Inline Frame (→ iFrame) war OO-technisch
dasselbe wie ein Frame im Frameset und hatte dieselben Eigenschaften
zur
Verfügung.

Ich zitiere aus der aktuellen Hilfe:

Wenn man nun einfach mal ein HTML-Dokument erstellt, stellt man
erstaunt
fest, daß der Befehl gar nicht zur Verfügung steht (inaktiv)!

Zur Einführung dieses Features konnte neben StarOffice nur der MSIE mit
einem iFrame im HTML etwas anfangen. Das hat sich inzwischen geändert,
der
zugehörige Hilfetext ist verschwunden, aber die Funktionalität ist
nicht
angepaßt: aktiviert wird diese Funktion nach wie vor nur, wenn man
Extras → Einstellungen - Laden/speichern - HTML-Kompatibilität: Export
auf Microsoft Internet Explorer ändert.


Nach diesem geschichtlichen Schwenk zurück zum Ausgangspunkt:
Entweder man kehrt zurück zum nichtssagenden Frame (iFrame wäre nur
in
Verbindung mit HTML-Export sinnvoll) oder man läßt sich eine deutsche
Bezeichung einfallen, die irgendetwas mit der Funktion zu tun hat, wie
Dokumentobjekt.

Alternativ wäre für beide Sprachen Audio/Video möglich.
Movie und Sound sind auf jeden Fall keine deutschen Bezeichnungen..

Ich selbst bin kein Fan der Sidebar - mich stört es also am
wenigsten.


Nutze die Sidebar aufgrund meines Monitors (5:4) nicht.
Mit Breitmonitoren dürfte sie durchaus von Vorteil sein.


Dafür gibt es den Gestalter, den Navigator, ggf. andere Fenster, die 
sich einzeln nach Bedarf andocken lassen. Der Vorteil dabei ist, dass 
sie auch parallel nutzbar sind, was in Form der Sidebar nicht möglich ist.


Warum ich aber die Sidebar ablehne, hat einen anderen Grund. StarOffice 
als Vorläufer von OpenOffice war angetreten, die bessere Alternative im 
Büro sein und u. a. die Erstellung und Pflege von Dokumenten durch die 
Nutzung von Vorlagen zu vereinfachen. Wer einmal vor der Aufgabe stand, 
in einem Büro mehrere Dokumente umformatieren zu müssen, der weiß es zu 
schätzen, wenn die Dokumente in ihrem Aufbau strukturiert und 
entsprechend der Struktur mit Formatvorlagen versehen wurden. Hart 
formatierte Dokumente sind dafür ein Grauen.


Verlage, Ministerien und alle Institutionen, die Schriftsätze geliefert 
bekommen, die für den Druck (ggf. in unterschiedlichen Größen) 
formatiert werden müssen, würden sich alle zehn Finger nach einer 
Software lecken, die konsequent das Erstellen strukturierter (und 
ausschließlich mit vorgegebenen Formatvorlagen formatierter) Dokumente 
ermöglicht.



Und die Sidebar verführt zum stetigen harten Formatieren. :-(

Disziplin ist das Stichwort.


1. Disziplin muss im gegebenen Kontext definiert sein.

Beispiel: Ein Verlag möchte, dass Autoren für die Einreichung von Texten 
eine gewisse Struktur eingehalten wird und nur bestimmte Formate verwenden.


2. Disziplin muss eingehalten werden *können*.

Es gibt genügend Automatismen, die genau das erschweren.

3. Das Einhalten der Disziplin sollte so einfach wie möglich sein.

Ausgehend von Beispiel unter 1.:
Wie kann es in AOO ermöglicht werden, dass tatsächlich nur die zu 
verwendenden Vorlagen angezeigt werden?
(Vordefinierte Vorlagen werden immer angezeigt und können nicht gelöscht 
werden! Dazu gibt es auch schon seit langem einen Issue.)


Es gibt auch Vorschläge in IssueZilla, wie die Nichteinhaltung der 
Disziplin korrigiert werden könnte:

Für mich mit AOO 4.1.0 unter Windows 7 _nicht_ nachvollziehbar.


Es betrifft offensichtlich nicht nur die deutsche Version, tritt aber 
(nach Deinem Test) nur unter Linux auf.

Zunächst der Hinweis, dass es für das Reproduzieren eines Issues wenig
hilfreich ist, wenn sich die Fehlermeldung auf eine ältere Version
bezieht und keinen Hinweise auf die aktuelle Version enthält.


Wie meinst Du das?

Das Versionsfeld soll die älteste Version benennen, in der das Problem 
auftritt. Und es tritt unter Ubuntu mit allen 4er Versionen auf.


In Kommentar 0 steht auch eindeutig, daß mir das Problem zuerst in den 
aktuellen Releasekandidaten aufgefallen ist. Eher zufällig; denn wie ich 
schrieb, ist die Seitenleiste bei mir kaum in Benutzung.



Damit kann nach meinem Verständnis der Issue als worksforme in version
4.1.0 geschlossen werden.

nicht korrekt (kaputte Umlaute) angezeigt, da der Browser den falschen 
Zeichensatz wählt.

Nein, Garnichts.
Im Gegenteil wäre dieser Begriff schon deshalb zu bevorzugen weil er Verwirrung 
bei der Unterstzützung von Anwendern vermeidet. Dabei gilt nämlich inzwischen 
leider das man ständig von 'Optionen oder Einstellungen' rden muss weil sonst 
ein Teil der Anwender den Menüeintrag nicht findet.



Sehe ich nicht so. Allgemein hat sich Einstellungen etabliert.
Da wären dann noch viele andere Stellen, die früher Optionen hießen.


Meine Meinung scheint mit der von Jörg konform zu gehen.
Extras → Einstellungen = JA
ABER
Symbolleisten: Optionen.

(Natürlich sagen wir implizit, wenn wir unsere Stärken
herausstellen, dass andere diese nicht, zumindest nicht in dieser
Kombination haben. Aber das kann und soll der Adressat selber denken.)


Genau das ist aber der Knackpunkt. Ich finde die Idee hinter der Sache 
hervorragend und würde gern meine Punkte beisteuern, nur wie?


Problem 1 (Hauptproblem):
Wenn man sich herausheben will, braucht man den Vergleich. Den habe ich 
nicht, weil ich mit (fast - siehe Punkt 2) keiner vergleichbaren 
Software arbeite. StarOffice für Windows 1.0 ff seit 1993.
Ich weiß nur, dass ich mit AOO mehr mache als andere, die bestimmte 
Feature einfordern, ohne nur annähernd an der 1-%-Grenze der nutzbaren 
Möglichkeiten zu kratzen.


Problem 2:
Ja, ich muss mich mit LO beschäftigen, weil es ein Kunde wünscht. Und da 
bin ich oft kurz davor, in die Tischkante zu beißen. Und dann wünsche 
ich mir nur, dass sich AOO damit abhebt, dass bestimmte Features 
(insbesondere die Beschneidung/Amputation ehemals vorhandener 
Funktionen) nie in AOO einfließen werden. (Manchmal hat die inkompatible 
Lizenz auch Vorteile ...)

Aber damit hebt sich AOO (für mich) *jetzt noch* ab. Bleibt es so?


Ansonsten kann ich Jörgs Standpunkt nachvollziehen, nur hilft das der 
aktuellen Fragestellung, wie sich AOO abhebt/abheben möchte/sollte, 
nicht weiter.

Autokorrektur in deutschen Sprachgebieten

Hallo!

Ich habe für einen österreichischen Freund OpenOffice installiert und 
eingerichtet. Dabei ist mir aufgefallen, wenn ich als Gebietsschema 
etwas anderes als »Deutsch (Deutschland)« auswähle, dass es dann keine 
Autokorrektureinträge dafür gibt.


Soll das so sein? Nutzt in Österreich und den anderen deutschen 
Sprachgebieten niemand die Autokorrektur?
Dass man durchaus unterschiedliche Bedürfnisse abzudecken hat, kann ich 
nachvollziehen. Aber dass es gar keine Standardvorgaben gibt?


Gleiches scheint auch für andere Sprachen wie »Französisch (Frankreich)« 
im Gegensatz zu allen anderen französischen Sprachgebieten zu gelten.


Ob das mal in älteren Versionen anders war und einfach irgendwo auf der 
Strecke liegen geblieben ist, kann ich momentan nicht überprüfen.
