Don’t attempt to use a standard RS232 cable with the K2. Re: [Elecraft] Thanks Elecraft -- HK0NA DXpedition
Although smaller than most of the other dxpeditions, our trip to Tiree (Inner Hebrides, MS0WRC) last October used 4 K3's (all owned by team members) and one FT2K. We made 12500 Q's in the week on SSB and CW and continually got unsolicited complimentary audio reports from them. There was one posting on Youtube from a Russian in his car working me on 20m and I have to say my audio sounded great! :) The one audio complaint we got was from the Yaesu. The other issue we found in the week was a noise which we originally thought was interaction but despite fitting stubs we could not clear it. It turned out to be phase noise from the Yaesu! No problems at all with the 4 K3's and a great time was had by all :) The K3 is a fabulous dxpedition radio, we only had one KPA500 and that was on the CW station. That is one very boring amplifier, it just sat in the corner and worked its socks off ;) Thanks guys 73 Ian -- Ian J Maude, G0VGS SysOp GB7MBC HB9DRV-9 DX Clusters If you feel you would like to donate to help the running of the cluster, please visit http://www.gb7mbc.net. Re: [Elecraft] K3 turns it self on, won't turn off
Remove the RS232 board and wash it with clean water and a light brush. Make sure it is well dried out and replace. I am 99% sure this will solve your problem. Some boards had some fluid left on after manufacture and developed this fault, mine included. Washing the board removes the film. I have had no problems since. For now, I'm just powering off the PS when the radio is not in use, and when it won't shut off, I have to turn the PS off to shut the radio off. If I turn the PS back on at that point, the radio comes back on. I have not yet tried another PS or battery to see if that's the culprit but that will be my next step if this isn't a common problem. After a few minutes with a group I chat with every day, I was ask where I got the Roger Beep for my rig. I ask what's that, and was told it was a thing that CB'ers often added, that causes a beep sound at the end of their transmissions. (since I hear a tone here in the shack, when I push the XMIT key as well as when I unkey, I don't know if it goes out on the air both times or not?) I found the source of this annoyance to be the SW TONE being set to ON. My question is, how do I keep the beeps, for when I push the other buttons on the face of the K3, but not get the added 'feature' of the CBer's Roger Beep (also known as a courtesy tone, I'm told), every time I key the mic. -- GB 73 K5OAI Sam Morgan __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] DX-pedition EU-123 Isle of Arran
Hi all, Members of Sands contest group are again joining up with Workington Radio Club and Brendan Minish, EI6IZ for a week of fun and DX on the Isle of Arran next week. We arrive on the island on Saturday 18th and depart the following Saturday. We will not be fully set up on the Saturday of course but, weather permitting (and remember, this is Scotland!), we will have some aerials up. we will be using 4 x K3's and amplifiers as well as a FT2000D for the 80m ragchew station and a TS2000 for VHF/UHF. We hope to be active on as many modes as possible and as many bands as possible. We will be using the callsign MS0SCG and there may well be some portable operation and hopefully some SOTA activations too. The main stations will be using N1MM for logging. I hope we manage to work you during our time on the island and you can follow our adventures on our blog at http://m0scg.blogspot.com. Logs will be posted each day so that you can see if you have worked us. You will find links to the logs on the blog and on http://www.m0scg.org.uk or directly on http://www.mx0wrc.org/?page_id=19 73 Ian -- Ian J Maude, G0VGS SysOp GB7MBC HB9DRV-9 DX Clusters Member RSGB, GQRP 9838, FISTS 14077 | K3 #455 http://www.m0scg.org.uk __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Mac OS X and K3 Utility Opinions?
RUMlog does not need MySQL. It installs easily and works out of the box. As Tom is a K3 owner, I would expect to see more stuff coming up for the radio. It is already very nice to use with some simple little features that come in very handy. Like being able to disconnect and reconnect the K3 in runtime so you can fire up the K3 utility or something. Well worth looking at. 73 Ian -- Ian J Maude, G0VGS SysOp GB7MBC HB9DRV-9 DX Clusters Member RSGB, GQRP 9838, FISTS 14077 | K3 #455 http://www.amateurradiotraining.org On 1 May 2010 19:17, David Ferrington, M0XDF m0...@alphadene.co.uk wrote: I couldn't get MySQL to install either and gave up on RumLog - I have MLDX anyway and understand Aether is good now, but haven't tried it. Re: [Elecraft] K3 RF Gain calibration
OK, here is the heads up. Mea Culpa (as usual :) ) What I had done before was to use CWT and spot to zero beat the signal from my XG1 and then switch off CWT. I now assumed the signal was centred. This does not appear to be the case. I tested this with all 3 versions of the Utility and got the same result. Then I did it manually, centering the signal by ear et voila! It now looks and feels right :) 73 Ian -- Ian J Maude, G0VGS SysOp GB7MBC HB9DRV-9 DX Clusters Member RSGB, GQRP 9838, FISTS 14077 | K3 #455 http://www.amateurradiotraining.org On 24 April 2010 15:38, Joe Planisky jp...@jeffnet.org wrote: Hi Ian, Some earlier versions of the K3 Utility for Mac and Linux would produce the symptoms you describe. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Power Connector
Hi Richard, In my opinion you have not installed the APP's correctly. I used them on my K2, my K3 and all over the shack. I have used them mobile and on the bench. I have even used them holding the K2 in my hand while I transmitted on SSB to test a portable aerial. I have never had a problem with them ever apart from one I didn't fit correctly. Personally, I solder them to the cable as I have no crimp tool but as I say, I have had no issues with them at all. Many of the most-requested changes were made over the past several months, keeping pace with the demands of the fall/winter contest season. (A few that come to mind: switch sequence automation via macros, improved DVR interaction with PTT, main/sub audio mixing, improved NR, lockable transmit controls, and many enhanced remote-control commands.) As we head into 2010, we'd like to refresh the master firmware list based on your input. Items already on the list have priority, of course, but this is a great opportunity to let us know what else is missing or could be improved. Our goal is to make the K3 as easy to use as possible, while providing the advanced features you need for specific operating situations. We're also planning a renewed effort to assist application software developers. If your ideas for improvements involve changes to both K3 firmware and a favorite application, we'll pass it along to the developers and work with them closely. We're making great progress on the P3 Panadapter and other new products. Re: [Elecraft] Noisy K3 receiver
Hi all, I have been following this thread with interest. My experience is that my K3 seems noisy at home where my ambient RF noise floor can be anything up to s9 at times with the amount of RF producing electrical junk all around me. However, when I use it at a 'quiet' location such as our DXpedition to the Isle of Jura or our contest site, the RX is extremely quiet. This leads me to believe that I am simply suffering from a RX with a *lot* of gain. At home, I simply turn down the RF gain and it is amazing how quickly the noise lowers significantly! There is only about 30dB of isolation between antenna 1 and antenna 2 off the tuner which does not help the noise floor and as such I have simply stopped putting an antenna in ant2 for HF, I only have my 6m log periodic in there. I think in a lot of ways we are chasing our tails here. 73 Ian -- Ian J Maude, G0VGS SysOp GB7MBC HB9DRV-9 DX Clusters Member RSGB, GQRP 9838, FISTS 14077 | K3 #455 http://www.amateurradiotraining.org __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Just to make it clear, I am not unhappy with the way Elecraft do business. Neither am I bothered about buying a small add-on board to improve my reception. I am quite willing to pay for the small board but do not see why I should have to pay £60-£70 (which it will be here after shipping and VAT etc) for a replacement DSP board that I do not need. So, is the add on audio filter board available to buy as a separate unit? 73 Ian 2009/12/17 Bob Naumann w...@w5ov.com There seems to be a lack of understanding regarding the DSP upgrade. The full price of the DSP board is $367. Elecraft's upgrade deal is only $69.95 presuming you return the old DSP board in 3 weeks to Elecraft. Without it, some K3s refuse to turn off when the POWER button is tapped because the 12V sense circuit does not drop to a low enough level to shut down the K3’s MCU. The diode is a common leaded part.
