Don’t attempt to use a standard RS232 cable with the K2. You should be
using a specially made cable which is shown in the manual.

Thankyou to everyone for ideas. In the end, I found a version of
Spectrogram16 which worked first time under Windows 10 running with
Parallels on the Mac. I had forgotten how much of a joy it was to use when
setting up the filters.

[Elecraft] K2 filter optimisation

2021-02-12 Thread Ian Maude
Hi all,
It’s been a while but good to be back. I have just resurrected my K2 and
had to do a reset due to not having any sidetone. This meant a certain
amount of realignment.
When I originally aligned this (back in 2004) I was able to use Spectrogram
to align the filters well. Is there a modern replacement for this,
preferably for Mac?

Re: [Elecraft] Thanks Elecraft -- HK0NA DXpedition

2012-02-09 Thread Ian Maude
Although smaller than most of the other dxpeditions, our trip to Tiree
(Inner Hebrides, MS0WRC) last October used 4 K3's (all owned by team
members) and one FT2K. We made 12500 Q's in the week on SSB and CW and
continually got unsolicited complimentary audio reports from them. There
was one posting on Youtube from a Russian in his car working me on 20m and
I have to say my audio sounded great! :) The one audio complaint we got
was from the Yaesu. The other issue we found in the week was a noise which
we originally thought was interaction but despite fitting stubs we could
not clear it. It turned out to be phase noise from the Yaesu! No problems
at all with the 4 K3's and a great time was had by all :) The K3 is a
fabulous dxpedition radio, we only had one KPA500 and that was on the CW
station. That is one very boring amplifier, it just sat in the corner and
worked its socks off ;)

Thanks guys

Re: [Elecraft] K3 turns it self on, won't turn off

2011-03-10 Thread Ian Maude
Remove the RS232 board and wash it with clean water and a light brush. Make
sure it is well dried out and replace. I am 99% sure this will solve your
problem. Some boards had some fluid left on after manufacture and developed
this fault, mine included. Washing the board removes the film. I have had no
problems since. Use just water of course, no detergents :)

I believe my PS is in good order, and nothing but antenna, PS and
paddle are connected to the back. It doesn't appear to be related to
anything external, and it's not dependable, just intermittant. It
started doing this a few months ago, then went away, and now started
 up again.

Maybe one of the boards needs to be reseated? Anyone else seen issues
like this? For now, I'm just powering off the PS when the radio is not
in use, and when it won't shut off, I have to turn the PS off to shut
the radio off. If I turn the PS back on at that point, the radio comes
 back on.

I have not yet tried another PS or battery to see if that's the
culprit but that will be my next step if this isn't a common problem.

Hi,
I heard someone call in but I could not make out the callsign, neither could
anyone else unfortunately. I did try a couple of times after that to listen
for you but nothing was heard. As for the CW, all I heard was a G and the same
goes for the rest of the guys on the net. We had no idea it was you, sorry. I
assumed, wrongly as it tuns out, that it was someone messing about which is
when I made a comment that it was a SSB net, which of course it is. What I
didn't do was tell anyone to 'go away'. I apologise if you were offended but
it is very difficult when you cannot hear the station calling :)

[Elecraft] UK Elecraft Net

2010-12-11 Thread Ian Maude
Hi all,
I will be running the Elecraft net as usual on 3658 +/- QRM at 09:00z
tomorrow (12/12/10). I have had various questions regarding frequency and
time changes. We have tried 40m in an attempt to see if we could cover more
of Europe but unfortunately at that time, it is almost impossible to hear
inter-G activity. As for time, 09:00 is the time I have available to run
the net. Signals are also quite good at that time now. If anyone wants to
run a 40m net at another time, feel free :)

That said, if you have a K2 or K3 and you have some time tomorrow morning
between 09:00 and 10:00z, I would be very happy to hear you!

Re: [Elecraft] UK Elecraft net Sunday 28th Nov 0900 hours

2010-11-28 Thread Ian Maude
Out of interest, we tried 40m last week after the net to see if we could get
better propagation/conditions. 40m at that time was absolutely no use for
inter-G traffic so we reverted to 80m. I don't see what else we can do?

There are many situations such as club, contest and special event
stations where a loudspeaker is needed for RX, while the operator also
needs a low-level monitor signal into the headphones for TX.

Is there any way to switch off the monitoring feed to the speaker(s) to
avoid feedback, while leaving it available as usual in the headphones?

It is always bad practice to monitor a live microphone transmission
through a speaker, because even low levels of acoustic feedback will
affect the signal quality. The default for all voice modes should be to
mute the LS channel automatically while transmitting.

I have not looked at 40m as yet, it may be worth a go. Conditions were not
good on 80m this morning so I had to abort as the only stations were weak to
me and a Dutch JOTA station set up half a kc down from us! I will think
about 40m and see what can be done. I only have a trap dipole up but it may
be possible.

I would totally expect something of this value to require a signature. To
that end, I make sure that I am going to be home (or have someone in the

have it delivered to a friend or neighbours house.

I don't know if it goes out on the air both times or not?)

I found the source of this annoyance to be the SW TONE being set to ON.
My question is, how do I keep the beeps,
for when I push the other buttons on the face of the K3,
but not get the added 'feature' of the CBer's Roger Beep

I have to disagree with you about RUMlog Joe. I use it for general logging
all the time. It even has net control which is a boon for me. RUMped does
the contesting stuff very well and I also use that but RUMlog is a terrific
general purpose logger. I especially like being able to search my log while
I am in the middle of logging another contact. This is very useful at

[Elecraft] DX-pedition EU-123 Isle of Arran

2010-09-14 Thread Ian Maude
Hi all,
Members of Sands contest group are again joining up with Workington Radio
Club and Brendan Minish, EI6IZ for a week of fun and DX on the Isle of Arran
next week. We arrive on the island on Saturday 18th and depart the
following Saturday. We will not be fully set up on the Saturday of course
but, weather permitting (and remember, this is Scotland!), we will have some
aerials up. we will be using 4 x K3's and amplifiers as well as a FT2000D
for the 80m ragchew station and a TS2000 for VHF/UHF.
We hope to be active on as many modes as possible and as many bands as
possible. We will be using the callsign MS0SCG and there may well be some
portable operation and hopefully some SOTA activations too. The main
stations will be using N1MM for logging.
I hope we manage to work you during our time on the island and you can
follow our adventures on our blog at http://m0scg.blogspot.com. Logs will
be posted each day so that you can see if you have worked us. You will find
links to the logs on the blog and on http://www.m0scg.org.uk or directly on
http://www.mx0wrc.org/?page_id=19

 Subject: [ Elecraft ] P3 Utility (Windows Version 1.3.7.22)

 Hello Elecrafters ,

I have been trying unsuccessfully to install the P3 Utility (Windows
Version 1.3.7.22). My virus protection program, Norton 360, will not allow
it. Norton pops up a message that a serious security breach has occurred.
Then I'm asked to restart my computer.

I tried the install a couple of times on each of two different computers,
one running Windows XP , and the other running Vista. The results were
 exactly the same.

I know, I know, turn off the Norton 360. But hold on a minute, Norton 360
is just doing its job Something is wrong with the way the latest P3 Utility
is coded. Norton 360 has never before objected to any program installations
on these computers, including several versions of the K3 Utility.

I am hoping that the programmer of the P3 Utility reads this and fixes the
 problem with the code.

I have received notification that my P3 is about to be shipped, so I need
the Utility to be working on my computer soon.

 Many thanks and 73,

 John, W2GW

By the way, to get rid of Norton, you will need the Norton Removal Tool of
the Symantec site. Doing it manually (unless you really know what you are

I've checked all my filter settings (which hadn't changed since it was
working a few minutes ago) and they all still seem to be correct. I
reloaded the firmware to the radio and also restored my previous
configuration. I've redone the synthesizer configuration because I've
recently added the synth stiffeners. I then redid the TXG
calibration. 5 Watt TXG calibration goes 100% successfully. However
100W TXG Calibration results in an ERR TXG message. It seems like its
doing everything that it should to make the radio produce 100 watts
but the PA just isn't doing its job. Flipping between PAio ON and
PAio TST does produce a relay click so the PAIO is doing its job. I
should also mention that all fan speed tests check out ok as well.

If I'm forgetting anything else to check please enlighten me.

 Thanks much gentlemen

I will shout out later in the year and hope to see plenty of Elecrafters on

Re: [Elecraft] Mac OS X and K3 Utility Opinions?

2010-05-02 Thread Ian Maude
RUMlog does not need MySQL. It installs easily and works out of the box.
As Tom is a K3 owner, I would expect to see more stuff coming up for the
radio. It is already very nice to use with some simple little features that
come in very handy. Like being able to disconnect and reconnect the K3 in
runtime so you can fire up the K3 utility or something. Well worth looking
at.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 RF Gain calibration

2010-04-26 Thread Ian Maude
OK, here is the heads up.

Mea Culpa (as usual :) )

What I had done before was to use CWT and spot to zero beat the signal from
my XG1 and then switch off CWT. I now assumed the signal was centred. This
does not appear to be the case. I tested this with all 3 versions of the
Utility and got the same result. Then I did it manually, centering the
signal by ear et voila! It now looks and feels right :)

If you ARE using the latest Mac/Linux K3 Utility, I would suggest trying the

If none of the above applies to you, then I don't know what else to

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Power Connector

2010-03-18 Thread Ian Maude
Hi Richard,
In my opinion you have not installed the APP's correctly. I used them on my
K2, my K3 and all over the shack. I have used them mobile and on the bench.
I have even used them holding the K2 in my hand while I transmitted on SSB
to test a portable aerial. I have never had a problem with them ever apart
from one I didn't fit correctly. Personally, I solder them to the cable as
I have no crimp tool but as I say, I have had no issues with them at all.
The tongue of the APP *must* overlap the spring and there should be an
audible click as it goes home.

 Hello everybody from Canberra.

This may have been covered before, and perhaps you can direct me to the
archive BUT ... Has anyone complained about the fragility of the
power plug/socket arrangement on the K2?? I *have* to sweep off my
bench before starting up the rig. Else it turns itself off and maybe
flickers on/OFF until I rest the plug on my bench. Just brushing
against mic cords, pens whatever ... is enough to set it off.

Have other people found a better mechanical connection for a plug
socket which has to remain connected and carry 2A on transmit. At
present, I could not take my setup portable in the passenger seat of my
 car or in my lap!!

 Ideas would be welcome...

As those who have an interest in history and royalty will know, pink is

Was talking with a JA operator yesterday who said that Elecraft is getting
 a
very bad name in that country - not for their product, but because of a
business decision to have everything go through an exclusive dealer for
 both
sales and service. The problem (according to this operator) is that the
exclusive dealer is jacking the price up by up to 50%. Yes, it is true
 that
they can buy the product directly from Elecraft, but doing so puts you
without access to any tech support.

Don't know if this is the isolated case of a guy who doesn't have his facts
straight and likes to spread rumors. We've got a few of them in this
country also. But thought I'd pass this along.

Do you have MENU:MIC SEL set to FP.H? BIAS on? Mic gain on my setup is 25.

I put an ohmeter on the adapter, and pin 1 is the hot lead, pin 7 is
ground. Are you sure you're looking at the pins correctly?
Looking into the connector on the front of the K3, pin 1 is on the left
of the key bump and pin 7 is on the right. The pins are numbered
 anti-clockwise from 1 to 7, with 8 being in the middle. I don't think
the Heil adapter has anything inside the shell, no extra components.

 Hi all,

As you probably know, we keep a list of firmware features and
improvements to be added as time permits. Many of the most-requested
changes were made over the past several months, keeping pace with the
demands of the fall/winter contest season. (A few that come to mind:
switch sequence automation via macros, improved DVR interaction with
PTT, main/sub audio mixing, improved NR, lockable transmit controls,
 and many enhanced remote-control commands.)

As we head into 2010, we'd like to refresh the master firmware list
based on your input. Items already on the list have priority, of
course, but this is a great opportunity to let us know what else is
missing or could be improved. Our goal is to make the K3 as easy to
use as possible, while providing the advanced features you need for
 specific operating situations.

We're also planning a renewed effort to assist application software
developers. If your ideas for improvements involve changes to both K3
firmware and a favorite application, we'll pass it along to the
developers and work with them closely.

We're making great progress on the P3 Panadapter and other new
products. There will be some surprises in 2010 :)

 73,
 Wayne

However, when I use it at a 'quiet' location such as our DXpedition to the
Isle of Jura or our contest site, the RX is extremely quiet. This leads me
to believe that I am simply suffering from a RX with a *lot* of gain. At
home, I simply turn down the RF gain and it is amazing how quickly the noise
lowers significantly! There is only about 30dB of isolation between antenna
1 and antenna 2 off the tuner which does not help the noise floor and as
such I have simply stopped putting an antenna in ant2 for HF, I only have my
6m log periodic in there.
I think in a lot of ways we are chasing our tails here.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Rev C +AF filter

2009-12-17 Thread Ian Maude
Just to make it clear, I am not unhappy with the way Elecraft do business.
Neither am I bothered about buying a small add-on board to improve my
reception. I am quite willing to pay for the small board but do not see why
I should have to pay £60-£70 (which it will be here after shipping and VAT
etc) for a replacement DSP board that I do not need.
So, is the add on audio filter board available to buy as a separate unit?

73 Ian

2009/12/17 Bob Naumann w...@w5ov.com

There seems to be a lack of understanding regarding the DSP upgrade. The
full price of the DSP board is $367.

Elecraft's upgrade deal is only $69.95 presuming you return the old DSP
board in 3 weeks to Elecraft.

This seems to be a reasonable price to bring the radio fully up to date.

 Bob W5OV

I sincerely hope that the small filter board will be available for those of
us without the newer DSP board. I will not be getting the newer board, I
can think of other things I would like to spend my money on than replacing
 a
 perfectly good DSP board.

[Elecraft] K3 power down problem

Hi all,
For some reason my K3 will not switch off this morning. I hit the power off
button and it powers down and starts again immediately. Obviously it goes
off when I power the PSU down but it is somewhat annoying. I have
reinstalled the firmware in case of corruption but have not as yet done a
full reset. Any ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 power down problem

2009-11-10 Thread Ian Maude
Yep as per my thread, I did it but still the same issue. I cannot imagine
that was the issue though on #455 after all this time.

73 Ian

2009/11/10 Greg - AB7R a...@cablespeed.com

This is the mod description from the website:

This modification adds a diode to the KPA3 12V sense circuit to hold the
 voltage to no
more than 0.6V when the K3 is turned off. Without it, some K3s refuse to
 turn off when
the POWER button is tapped because the 12V sense circuit does not drop to a
 low enough
level to shut down the K3’s MCU.

The diode is a common leaded part. No work with SMDs is required. A minimum
 of
disassembly is required and no boards need be removed to perform this
 modification.

 You're missing something.

The sensors each have an RF input, an RF output, and a CAT-5 cable to the
 W2
main unit. You put the sensors where it makes sense to put RF cables.

If you get two sensors, you can connect them in-line with two different
 radios, one sensor per radio.

You can use the front panel W2 switch to select which sensor to activate
 the
 LED display.
