I finally got everything scanned in. It is 18 pages long. I have had so
many requests that I have put the PDF files for access on my web site. There
is an icon to download a free version of Adobe Acrobat Reader if you don't
have it. I've tested it and it appears to all work. Please let me know if
you have any technical difficulties. Please also sign my guest book. TIA.

Hi Folks,
Well, after searching all weekend at home for the list, I finally found it
in a file at my office this morning. I will take it home and get it scanned
in tonight, Tuesday. It is 15 pages long, so I may split it into two files
so it is not two big for everyone to download.

BTW, it is entitled, Scandinavian Given Names, not Norwegian, but I don't
think there is great deal if difference (am I being ignorant here?). If you
requested my list, but no longer want it, please let me know. PRIVATE EMAIL
PLEASE!

I have a list of Norwegian names I xeroxed a few years ago. It is separated
by male and female and is several pages long. In the past, I have copied
and mailed them to people for cost. NOW, I have a scanner! I will find my
list this weekend and make it available to anyone who requests it via PDF
attachment. I just have to figure out where I put it last! So give me a day
or two.

Please send your request to me privately.

This message is from: Cynthia Madden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi Sharon,
I do a monthly measurement so that I can track the weight of 25/26? year old
Nigel, 2 1/2 year Teddy and 14 yr old Tank. I weigh and measure all their
food. They get grass hay and Nutrena Safe Choice in amounts appropriate to
their use, condition, and age. All the horses are looking great. I add or
subtract as needed. Has anyone tried using the new Texas AM weight measure
system. I have the instructions but have not instituted it. It is supposed
to be accurate within 50 lbs which is probably more accurate than the
standard weight tape.

2006-02-27 Thread Cynthia Madden
This message is from: Cynthia Madden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I did it. I drove tandem for the first time! Linda Fairbanks just completed
a three-day clinic here and we actually got Nigel, Tank and me unscrambled
and on our way. I am so excited. Some day, when Teddy aka Starfire Chiron is
ready, I hope to do a Tank and Teddy Tandem but for now I have good ol'
Nigel and steady Tank for learning. It was great. Also thanks to Brian and
Dave for their mentoring to help me get ready to take advantage of Linda's
presence.

Teddy went off site to the clinic location. His first time off premises
since he arrived 18 months ago. He just walked right in the trailer. His
uncle Nigel accompanied him and they had an overnight. Linda gave me a great
program to get him started easy and correctly. So now I have lots to do and
am very motivated.
BTW, if you are looking for a great carraige driving clinician, Linda
Fairbanks is one of the best. This is her second year here, she is so
popular. This year we added a 3rd day for our members in Roswell and Linda
and I trooped the 3 hours from Las Cruces to Roswell so she could do a
Sunday Clinic then returned last night. We had everything from mini's to
17.2 belgians. She is kind and fair but tells it like it is. She is also an
extremely good sport.

25th Anniversary Celebration Items

Hi all,
Slightly revised guidelines for 25th anniversary celebration poster
submission are now available online at the NFHR site at www.nfhr.com . I
neglected to cover photo information and it is now on the guidelines. I am
looking forward to seeing some entries Look under forms documents on
the website.

HELP!
On another note, I need some specific volunteer help for the 25th
anniversary promotions.
Booth Manager -I need someone near enough to Winona who is willing to take
managing on the NFHR Promotion Booth at the celebration. This involves
setting up the booth, receiving items for the booth prior to Oct. 12th,
inventory control, and generally seeing things go smoothly.

To help the Booth Manager, I am also seeking a Volunteer Coordinator who
will schedule staffing the booth, recruit volunteers and see to volunteer
care feeding. This person would not necessarily have to live near Winona
but is planning to attend the entire event.

Thanks. I hope to hear from you soon!

I first met Grabbson when he was owned by Bill Steavenson, just 20 miles

Tank is a Grabbson offspring I have owned for 10 years. He is personable and
mellow and an overall great Fjord! I was so happy when Grabbson went to
California knowing he would have great home. I hope someone will buy this
horse and give him the home and job he deserves.

Teddy first

2005-12-13 Thread Cynthia Madden
This message is from: Cynthia Madden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My tubby Teddy, aka Starfire Chiron, had his first ground driving lesson on
Sun. He is such an intelligent fellow. You could tell he was beginning to
catch on. That's when I stop as he thinks about it and next time he is ready
for the next move or step. This is a great characteristic as time to work
with him is somewhat irratic but whenever you are ready, he is.

Nothing scares this pony. Saw a hole in your metal barn siding and his nose
is right on the saw (or would be). Steve was playing frisbee with his Corgi
and the wind slammed it right into Teddy and he just looked at it. He is
going to make a great CDE horse. I am a little worried though about what
will scare this guy - that could turn out to be quite an event! Steve
reported yesterday that Teddy was straddling the Giant Schnauzer, Zack, as
he worked on his Kong and then following Zack around the pasture with his
nose of Zack's butt for about 20 minutes just watching what he was doing. He
is quite Fjord!!

So I'll give it some time

The line was too long at the USPO
So cross town I went

I gave them some cash
And they wrapped it up tight
The ladies in there
Found your gift a delight !

Arrival is firm
On Dec.12-13th to you
Its hard to believe
They would know that its true !

So off with 3 Fjords
To the dentist today
If his drill is too fast
They might FLOAT

Well, it does rhyme with FJORD
Believe it or not

The art, although I really do try
Is not mine, but from spirits
Who walked ancient skys

By rocks that are red
And twisted with time
If you look close enough

The stories to see,
Those not damaged by man
Spin tales of the wind
Water, creatures and land.

Ive found many sites
And have taken a few
Come visit us here
and I'll take you there too !

We'll drive up the ponys
Into hills with red glow
If you come really soon
Than you'll play in the snow !

RE: safety discussions

2005-08-30 Thread Cynthia Madden
This message is from: Cynthia Madden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I read the initial and subsequent discussions and I do not see any blame
being attached. I thought people were simply pointing out concerns that
should be addressed by the show planning committee and fair board for next
year. I am sure they will be now and maybe they would have been anyway.
Shows grow and safety issues become more serious. I think the discussion has
been good for all fjord people - farm oriented or show oriented or pleasure
oriented. What is safe on the farm is not necessarily safe at a show or in
crowd situations. Perhaps it is time for a technical delegate or safety
coordinator to be added to the committee who assists in planning and
monitoring the actual show with safety in mind. Growth is good but it
requires rethinking the environment, etc. I am sure that BE planners and
participants as well as Libby, etc. are willing to be review each years
successes and problems in mind and keep safety paramount.

horse show. It is so friendly, informal and fun. It is a good safe place to
try new things that will hopefully get you to try open shows as an
opportunity to show off your Fjord once you have built some confidence. And,
of course, you meet so many people from this list! So hi to everyone there

Tank and ZCDC do first ADT

2005-05-23 Thread Cynthia Madden
This message is from: Cynthia Madden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Our driving club had its first ADT this weekend. One of our newer members
moved into the area from Phoenix and has a large farm and enthusiasm for
ADT's and CDE's so they sponsored the event. They are a huge asset to the
club. We also had some help financially from the Arizona Driving Club. Tank
did as well as he ever has in his dressage test marked down for lack of
impulsion and for lack of submission (for not reponding to my attempts to
get impulsion) however he did the rest of the test well. This is in light of
the fact that I have been driven to get my landscaping done before the
monsoon season and have not been driving my horse. He was very good in the
cones section and the hazards (which lacked any challenge but we had mostly
green first timers). The temperature reached 112 degrees, unseasonably hot
for May.
Teddy who pitched a fit when we got ready to leave the house made it clear
that lack of impulsion would not be his problem when he is old enough to
compete. He has the most beautiful floating trot. Just like daddy. I had to
leave Nigel behind as the brand new fencer was out and I was afraid of what
Teddy would do if left without a charged fence even though his baby sitter
was right in the next pasture.
Tank's impulsion has improved since I put him in a neck collar and he was
fine in the cones and hazards. He just doesn't like dressage. I had a
trainer tell me recently that if I gave her Tank for one week HE WOULD GET
IMPULSION! So guess, what, she won't get Teddy (nor Tank) to train which I
was considering. He is too smart for her and she will not do right by him.
She's too used to Arabs and Quarter Horses (no insult intended really but
Fjords are different in their minds and few people understand them).

RE: New Horse Adjustment

2005-05-19 Thread Cynthia Madden
This message is from: Cynthia Madden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It all depends on the horses. I keep a new one separate but adjacent.
Sometimes you need a a few days, sometimes a few hours. When I brought
Teddy home I put him in a temporary pen so that he had some separation
from Tank and Nigel until they got use to each other. It became
obvious that there would be no problem and within a few hours I just
let them all together. On the other hand, when Nigel came it took a
few days for Keyah and Tank to accept him.

It may have to do with the horse's personality. Teddy (Prince
Charming) never accepts rejection. Tank even lets Teddy eat with him.
Nigel considers himself at the the bottom of everyone's list and
always gets picked on. I noticed yesterday and now Nigel even gives in
to Teddy during the feed time circle.

I have been places where the facilities allowed for a horse to be
quarantined for a week or so and if you don't know the kind of
facility your horse came from it can be a good idea. (Strange horses
bringing in strangles, etc).

Weanlings

2005-03-06 Thread Cynthia Madden
This message is from: Cynthia Madden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Paula,
I have done what you are thinking about. Tank is not
that old, only 12, but has made it clear that he
doesn't like to compete (he will do it, just doesn't
enjoy himself).

So when my Morgan died last year, I thought about
buying a weanling to raise and eventually compete. I
was lucky enough to be offered Starfire Chiron (aka
Teddy) from Bethy Beymer and Sandy North. I was
thrilled because I know their stallion BDF Obelisk and
have watched Obie grow up, train and compete for last
five years. I believe I have purchased my boy and he
will have the movement of his Dad, and may I say also
some of his presence and, the great personality of him
mom, Sophie. He is 18 months old now and showing lots
of promise and personality.

There are some lines who will produce Fjords capable
of doing nice dressage. Take the time to get know some
of the breeders and look at their stallions and get.
You will find a weanling whose potential and breeding
are sound and worth the investment.

Naming - well, Hjertebarn (apple of my eye) is called Tank and
Starfire Chiron (a very elegant name in my opinion) is called Teddy
(as in bear) and also baby. A friend of mine cautioned me about
calling Teddy, Baby, because she called her mare, Filly, when she was
young, and that forever remained her name.

Nose Blowing - I always thought blowing in a horse's nose was
imitating what they do to meet and greet each other. I love to do it
and get a little snuffle back at me. (They prefer that I haven't
recently eaten meat!)

I coordinated a Linda Fairbanks Driving Clinic this weekend. If any of
you are planning to do one, I highly recommend her. She was just great
with everybody. She helped me get Tank's new collar adjusted
correctly so that I now feel comfortable that it fits. He likes it so
much better than his breast collar. Look for an article about the
clinic in the June Whip.

Dave McWethy is coming to do a clinic in Roswell, NM in April but
unfortunately I will be at my Mom's (90th birthday!).

You are all up-to-date for now. Keep dry and warm! In the valley here
in Las Cruces, the trees were flowering this morning. I don't know
what they look like now since we just had heavy hail.

RE: Another Fjord horse Buying question

2005-02-11 Thread Cynthia Madden
This message is from: Cynthia Madden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You might first consider a comparison of the number of Fjords in the NW in
comparison to QH's and Appys. They are much less in number throughout the
country and so often more expensive. Expense being relative to the
temperament, training, etc. of a horse. Plus they are worth every penny in
temperament and pleasure to own (mostly).

Another thing, is that you can never judge a breed rridden on a dude ride.
Rent horses are almost always rotten. Wouldn't you be stubborn or mulish or
perhaps, self-protective when ridden constantly by people who hurt your
mouth, hurt your back and generally abuse you. Any horse will develop
behavioral issues after this kind of treatment. Fjords are generally very smart
and don't put up well with continued abuse.

I would visit some of the excellent breeders in the NW and try some well
trained Fjords out for size. I think you will be impressed and maybe reconsider
the cost. If you continue on this list, you may hear about a horse that is
looking for a good home, suits your needs and is within your budget.

Just can't help myself in replying to Beth's first comments about Starfire
Arend and his mother, Maerta. I now own Starfire Chiron out of Obelisk and
Sophie. I think Beth Sandy put a lot of thought into not only their stallion,
but the mare they breed him to. Chiron (or Teddy as he is called here) is only
16 months old but has such personality. We just left him by himself for the
first time a few weeks ago and went for a drive with Tank and Nigel. Teddy just
went down to his corner where his next door buddy lives and stayed with him
until we came back - no screaming or hysterics. He continues to do this when we
leave. I find it amazing in a young horse. He is so brave and a jokester too.
He learns well but not without some testing. He has is Dad's movement and I
believe he will have his looks. I bought him because of the breeding program he
came from. It is a always a gamble buying a young horse but I trust in his
breeding to be what I think he can be and what I want him t!
 o be when
 he grows up.

This message is from: Cynthia Madden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Lisa,
I have driven Tank for years in a breast collar.
However, at a Jeff Morse Clinic he recommended I try
him in collar and hames due to the way his neck meets
his chest. I finally did get a set and he is obviously
happier in the collar. Unfortunately now I am waiting
for the hames to be adjusted wider to fit him better.

I think it depends on how your horse is built when
choosing breast collar or over neck collar. My
preference with my road cart is for a breast collar
but if Tank needs collar and hames to move more freely
and be more comfortable, so be it. Some vehciles are
traditionally used with either breast or neck collar.
That may also make a difference in your choice.

SS message for Janne Mydral

2004-12-22 Thread Cynthia Madden
This message is from: Cynthia Madden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

To my secret Santa pal:

Four horses, fifty head of cattle.
That's what we have on our farm.
Most days we can just prattle,
Yet holidays have a special charm.

Our local post office isn't too far away.
But time flies when you're having fun.
This secret Santa is very late,
And off to the barn I must run.

So look for your gift in another week.
At least you won't be tempted to peek!

Apologies to poets everywhere.

RE: flax seed

2004-08-31 Thread Cynthia Madden
This message is from: Cynthia Madden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have used flax seed for the last three years. It was recommended to me for
fiber to help prevent sand colic as well coat, etc by a long-time Las Cruces
horsewoman. I do not grind it but I soak it. I prepare 1 cup of beet pulp and
add 1/4 cup of flax for each horse at the prior feeding so it soaks at least
11-12 hours. The Fjords get just enough beet pulp to mix with any supplements
such as the flax and minerals I add. I also am feeding a probiotic (Fastrack)
in the p.m. feeding. At the first of the month, as recommended by my vet, I go
to Sam's and buy a huge jar of Metamucil (I sometimes get funny looks for this
and feel it necessary to explain it is for the horses!). I feed it twice a day
for five days.

My Morgan who couldn't eat much hay when his teeth got worn, ate a much larger
feeding of beet pulp mixed with priobiotics and flax. This kept him shiny and
put weight on him. He only got enough hay to keep him happy. He did tend to
have looser stools. Most of the hay was wasted as he couldn't chew it fine
enough to swallow. Tank enjoyed cleaning up after him - an additional snack.

I have introduced the baby to small amounts of beet pulp, flax seed, minerals,
as well as some straight oats. He is gobbling it up. Starfire Chiron is one
year old today! He is doing very well and adapting to his new desert
surroundings well. Luckily we have had unseasonably cooler weather and I
believe this is making his transition easier. He is so sweet natured and very
smart. I'll have more baby pictures soon.

Albquerque. The ride is smooth and kind to horses. It is made for women to
hitch and haul. Easy to move around and manuever by hand. The engineering is
great. I hauled it first with my 1987 F-150 straight six and Steve's T-bird
with no problem. You never know it's there. Now we use the F-250 diesel and it
is sort of overhorsed you might say. They are pricey!! Everytime I use mine, I

Starfire Chiron now in Las Cruces

2004-08-24 Thread Cynthia Madden
This message is from: Cynthia Madden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

A flying trip up to Berthoud and Starfire Farm with John Sorger and finally
Chiron (BDF Obelisk x Slomiet) is in his new home. We picked up Kezzie and
Chiron on Friday and drove to Albuquerque and then I brought him home on Sat.
morning. I am so happy to finally have him here. He turns one year old on Aug.
31.

He is fitting in well with Nigel and Tank, though they are a little stodgy.
With any luck, in October, he will go on pasture with two other yearlings for a
while to continue growing up.

So while people say that Fjords are like potato chips -you can't have just one,
after 10 years of owning just one Fjord, I now have two! (I never cared much
for potato chips).

Thanks Beth Sandy for such a nice boy! I look very forward to seeing what he
can do in a couple of year! I have great expectations of him. He is so
personable and polite but not without a little devil in him. Perfect

BTW, Jon Mary Ofjord - Bethany Star is a beautiful baby! So sweet and very

I feed beet pulp pellets. I don't like the shreds - more expensive. I feed 1
cup of beet pulp twice a day and mix in supplement and flax seed and for some
extra straight oats(added a feeding time). I prepare the beet pulp at each
feeding for the next feeding. Water should be adequate for it to really soak up
the pulp and make it mushy. Start with twice as much water as pulp and see how
it works.

Sorry, I definitely did not mean to restart the crossbreeding issue with my
short comment. I was just trying for a little humor. (I am surprised I haven't
received a message from he who must be obyed!) Anyway.Nigel has been
discussed in previous list discussions. Speculation is that he from the cross
breeding done out of PA from the same place that bred the crosses driven by
Bill Long years ago. I believe he is about 19-20 years old or so. I have
boarded him for nearly three years. He is a wonderful horse once owned by the
Busch (Budweiser) family out of St. Louis. Has a fjord personality, very
handsome and wonderful movement. If I were a breeder I would NOT CROSSBREED but
some of them are out there and many make fine family horses. So enough said

RE: Fjords recognizing Fjords

2004-08-16 Thread Cynthia Madden
This message is from: Cynthia Madden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Tank was very bonded with my Morgan, Keyah, and when they showed together, he
was bonded with Steve's Morgan, Pferd - actually he was Pferd's shadow all the
time and transferred this to Keyah when we came to New Mexico. This did not
prevent him from instantly recognizing other Fjords when we are in their
vicinity. They just don't discriminate against other breeds but always seem to
recognize their own.

I have noticed that when separated from their pals such as overnights at shows
or clinics (like this weekend), horses of all breeds seem to bond with their
neighbors for the short period they are near each other. It is such a strong
instinct. Tank was next to a pinto mare all weekend while he was a lesson horse
at our club clinic and they always nickered at each other when one was removed
from or returned to a neighboring pen.

BTW, Tank again received kudo's from the the clinician as well as people who
drove him for his patience and tolerance. He is a perfect horse for beginner's
and much admired in our little driving co

RE: Stools Llama

2004-08-09 Thread Cynthia Madden
This message is from: Cynthia Madden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

OK, this is a strange combination for a reply! I'm just too lazy to write two
messages! (LOL)

Stools: While it certainly could be a problem with teeth, have you tried giving
a probiotic to help with digestion?

Llamas: I agree with Fred. Tank lived with a llama and they got along fine.
However, after I moved from there and after several months, I was riding past a
farm with llamas who came running at the fence and Tank lost it and took me
down a steep ditch bank. I am not sure that a group of strange looking shapes
running towards your horse whatever breed would not challenge their courage.

BTW, has anyone ever had problems with horses being afraid of their Fjords when
meeting them in a ring or on a trail? I have found that Paso Fino's are almost
always are afraid of Fjords (but maybe not llama''s). I am sure that it some
racial memory thing that does not recognize a Fjords shape. I also have had the
horses be afraid of a standing wooden bear carving that was lifesize and
standing at a gate entrance.

Just to provide some more mature data. When I bought Tank at barely 2 years
old, he was at 13 hands. He grew some over the next two years, but in the
winter of his 4th year, he grew nearly 1 hand more to top out right at 14 hands.

GD (?),
I guess I use the older KK bits, the Aurigan, 3 piece. I don't remember it's
width but it is a relatively fat one. Tank really liked it when I switched him
from the usual 2-piece snaffle. I think it is the copper in it because he
always has a very nice wet mouth.

BTW, Steve and I first found out about the efficacy of the snaffle from
reading Mary Twelveponies, There are no problem horses, only problem riders.
His Morgan had been used in the old cheap western curb. It turns out he has a
very sensitive mouth. He would run away and do temporal displacements.
Switching him to the snaffle allowed us to be kinder to him and also learning
to double him when he started to run soon changed his behavior. Doubling can
only be done correctly in a snaffle. Again, the right hands are important.
Considered a mild bit, even a snaffle can cause pain to a horse when used
incorrectly. Mary Twelveponies also has a book called Everyday training:
backyard dressage. We have recommended her books to people new to horses for
years because they are so common sense and easy to understand. While our book
collection has become more sophisticated over the years as hopefully have our
equestrian skills, Mary's books started us on the right path.

To shoe or not to shoe

2004-06-07 Thread Cynthia Madden
This message is from: Cynthia Madden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Just had the farrier out. He is a little unsual but very competent. When I
tried to find one I thought would be good but more reasonably priced, I paid
dearly and so did the horses.

However, one thing this guy does is not trim unless they need it. He looked at
Tank and Nigel and said their feet were perfect. They were a little rough
around the edges and he said he would happy to charge me $40 to do a cosmetic
job (which I declined). We have been lucky to never have had to shoe. It
depends on where and when. I do believe Steve's Morgan,Pferd, needed front or
rear shoes temporarily when he developed a split.

My farrier says that Tank has feet that could do the mountain pass without
shoes. My Morgan never needed shoes. But there are places and/or horses that
would require shoeing. I agree with Brigid that one should not assume all
horses need shoes but I do believe that sometimes they will and sometimes they
won't. It is a decision dictated by an individual's current health and physical
circumstances.

RE: Fjords heat

Myriam,
Would I be wrong and assuming you also have high humidity? My Fjord, Tank,
suffered in the heat AND humidity especially in the Fall when he his winter
coat came in but temperatures were still in the high 90's F when we lived in
Nebraska. Now that I live in a very dry climate, the heat hardly bothers him as
he also has shade.

You say you keep him in a stall. Is there an electrical outlet nearby? You
could get him a window fan (they have window fans in France?) and mount it in
his stall and then he can get relief from standing in front of it. Hosing off
also helps but only temporarily. Also, is Fuego at all overweight? If he is,
you might take some weight off of him to help handle the heat.

Good luck!

Hi all,
The point I was trying to make is that you if you WANT TO SHOW your horse you
can do so just for fun and without great expense while getting the reward of
showing off the Fjord breed. If you DO NOT WANT TO SHOW your horse, what's the
problem? I certainly wasn't telling people they have a obligation to show. 99%
of the time, I am not showing Tank. I am riding him or driving him around my
home. When I said I showed in 5 (actually 7) states, it might help to know that
I have lived in border cities. Omaha, right on the Iowa-Nebraska border, and
Las Cruces, right on the Texas-New Mexico border. I rarely go more than 50
miles to a show. And I never showed more than 4 or 5 times a year, if that. I
can't afford it. It's why we haven't done the two CDE's in Arizona the last two
years (though I have not given up hope). I really do miss the annual 6 hour
trip to Blue Earth every July, however, which is the furthest I have travelled
with him. The MWFHC show in Blue Earth is one of the !
 very few
things I miss when I left Nebraska.

RE: show horses

2004-05-24 Thread Cynthia Madden
This message is from: Cynthia Madden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

A show horse is in the mind the rider/driver. I thought Michelle's recent story
of taking the Fjord to a show where they usually rode their quarter horse was
a great example What's the purpose of showing in open shows? To have fun, for
kids (and adults) to learn how to do your best, and to win or lose gracefully.
Note...to have fun is the first criteria in my book. I have taken Tank to an
open show series this spring and we have enjoyed having a good time and showing
lots of people their first fjord. I paid $1,100 for Tank 10 years ago and have
taken him to shows, horse fairs, etc. in five states. We go to show people how
neat Fjords are and to associate with other horse people (Fjord people
preferably but not much available now in southern New Mexico). My cart and
harness cost about $1,600, the price of a really good saddle. You don't need to
spend a lot of money to show. You need pride in your horse(s), a sense of
humor, and a desire to improve yourself. You do have an
obligation to your horse and yourself to be prepared, be neat and ready to
compete. You don't need lots of silver or brass, or really expensive stuff and
flashy clothes. A good judge will pick the best team.

I think Tank is a good (but not outstanding) example of his breed. He is
certainly an outstanding example of their personality. He has made friends in
many states. He is a homebred horse (in some people's definition). In my
estimation, he is a good show horse. I am not a breeder. I just want to have
fun with my horses. I'll take him anywhere and I'm not ashamed if we don't win.
The comments of people who come up to visit us and stroke Tank are more than
enough reward. I've always thought of Tank as an outstanding Norweigian Fjord
Horse Ambassador!

Laurie,
for what its worthWhen my Morgan died in the October, Tank was by himself
for the first in his life (11 years). He could see and talk to other horses in
the area but that was all. He, like most Fjords, was very stoic about it. I did
think he was a little morose (not korose)! What I noticed was that he would
never lie down. He seemed OK otherwise.

When his friend, Nigel (the arab/fjord I had boarded at my other place), came
for a two-night sleepover, we have pictures of the both of them napping
together nose to nose. Tank appeared to really sleeping for the first time in
three months. He was very distressed when Nigel left. I convinced NIgel's owner
to let me board him for the rest of the winter until Chiron came. It was so
apparent that both horses were so much more content and relaxed to be together
again.

Your Oz, having not formed close or long-term friendships with your other
horses, may have a different reaction. But I do believe horses are much happier
and more relaxed with a companion.

Horse-aholic Anonymous

2004-02-03 Thread Cynthia Madden
This message is from: Cynthia Madden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Good evening. I am a horse-aholic. I would like to welcome all of
you to this month's meeting of Horse-aholic Anonymous. Some of you are here
tonight because a friend or relative brought you. You may be sitting
here thinking that you are OK and don't really need any help. It is not easy to
admit that you are a horse-aholic and it is even harder to bring yourself to a
HA meeting for help. HA is here to assist you.

I have some questions to ask. If you can answer YES to more than three of
the following, you have come to the right place.

1. Can you say sheath in public without blushing?
2. Do you drive a big truck with a towing package when everyone else
drives a real car?
3. Do you have more than one vehicle? One for you and one for the horses?
4. Do you spend your holidays going to shows, clinics and seminars when
everyone else goes on a cruise?
5. If you do go away, is it to a riding vacation in Ireland or to the World
Show?
6. Do you discuss things at the dinner table that would make most
doctors leave in disgust?
7. Do you consider formal wear to be starched jeans and freshly scraped boots?
8. Is your interior decorator State Line Tack?
9. Was your furniture and carpeting chosen with your horses in mind?
10. Are your end tables really tack trunks with tablecloths thrown over them?
11. Is your mail made up primarily of horse catalogs and horse
magazines?
12. Do you get up before dawn to ride? Go to horse shows? Clinics?
(but have trouble getting up for work?)
13. If you do have dresses, do they all have pockets? Do those pockets often
contain bits of carrot, hay, or sweet feed?
14. When you meet a new person do you always ask them what kind of
horse they have and pity them if they don't have one?
15. Do you remember the name of their horse sooner than you remember
theirname?
16. Do you find non-horse people boring?

If you answered YES to one of the above, there is still hope. If you answered
YES to two, you are in serious trouble. My advice to all of you with three or
more YES's is to sit back and smile, turn to the smiling person next to you,
and know that your life will always be filled with good friends and good horses
and it will never be boring.

Hi Linda,
One possible answer to your question about the lack of Fjord stuff in AZ is
that there are few Fjords in AZ. They don't do well there. Maybe up in the
mountains they do OK but elsewhere it is just too hot for them. While people
like me and the fabulous Alexander with his Fjord mare from California go to
compete in November and March. The rest of the year the weather is not too
welcoming for year round Fjord ownership.

When I took Tank to the AZ CDE there a couple of years ago, a woman who used to
own Fjords told me she had to sell them because they just did not thrive.A
friend from here in Las Cruces who moved to Tucson with her two Fjords had one
die and gave the other to Sue in Albuquerque because she was concerned for he
mare.

OTH, here in New Mexico Fjords seem to do well. Not so hot.

Jean,
I haven't received a property assessment on my
property yet. However, valued at approximately
$116,500 my taxes should be in the neighborhood of
$780 according to the tax rate the assessor's office
provided to me.

Las Cruces has been discovered as a retirement town. A
lot of people from California and Arizona are moving
here because it is cheaper to live here. However,
property values are rising quickly due to the influx
of people. The house building industry here is
booming. I figure that had I waited another couple of
years (as I had really planned to do), I would have
had to pay a lot more. Being forced to go ahead and
build now (due to a total lack of reasonable horse
property) was really a lucky break for me, especially
with the great interest rates right now.

RE: Weanlings

2003-12-17 Thread Cynthia Madden
This message is from: Cynthia Madden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

With the loss of my Morgan, Keyah, in October, I
decided to check into getting a weanling as company
for Tank and a baby I can bring along now that I have
my own property and no longer have to board my horses.

I do caution about buying a weanling unless you are an
experienced horseperson already or as smart as Julie
to put her weanling with an experienced horseperson to
help her and her weanling get the right start. It is a
great success story. I believe that a cute little baby
in the hands of inexperienced or unprepared people is
a horror story in the making. I believe Carol and
Janne, and most Fjord breeders, are careful enough of
who buys their horses not to let this happen but many
people would do better to put the money out for a
trained horse and work with a trainer to have a good
experience and happy safe future with their Fjords or
any horse.

Aren't many of the bad stories we hear about Fjords
those poor beasties who have had the misfortune to be
owned by people who do not know enough or care enough
to learn about handling horses and spoil their horses
making them rude, unmanageable and even dangerous?

I know of horses, no Fjords, who have had to be put
down because they were owned by ignorant people who
handled or did not handle their animal and it because
too dangerous for even experienced people to deal
with. This a terrible tragedy.

On the upbeast side, I am planning to buy a weanling
from Beth Sandy of Starfire Farm in late winter when
he is ready for a new owner. Like Carol suggested,
buying a weanling from a reputable breeder is good way
to go. It is more affordable for me and since I have
Tank, I can take my time and work with the new horse
and we can grow together.

Horse lover's Christmas

2003-12-16 Thread Cynthia Madden
This message is from: Cynthia Madden [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This seems a timely message from recent list
discussions in more ways than seasonal
... from a friend in Nebraska

It's the night before Christmas, we're out in the barn
Blanketing horses to keep them all warm
They're eating their dinners, tucked in cozy stalls
Not aware that it's Christmas or any special day at
all

They can dream of spring pastures from their pine-
scented beds
No visions of sugarplums dance in their heads
But we people are thinking of merry parties and such
Maybe feeling a little sad at missing so much

This season is special but the horses don't know
We've got work to do before we can go
We finish the chores and head on inside
To get ready for dinner and our own yuletide

It's nearly midnight, the carols are sung
I remember a story I was told when I was young
How at midnight on Christmas Eve
The creatures of the barnyard can speak to us with
ease

I am called to the barn, I wade through the rain
I know I must go, I can't really explain
I slide open the door, pause for a while
Then slowly walk down that dimly lit aisle

A nicker from Casey, a wink from JD
Sleepy old Alibi waking to see
Tucker rustling his bedding, a snort soft and light
Each horse gave a greeting as I walked through the
night

I thought about parties bright lit and warm
The ones we don't go to 'cause we have the barn
And vacations and holidays that we don't get
When we're working long hours for bills to be met

Walking all the way to the end of the aisle
I stop to stroke Bonnie, it brings me a smile
She snuffles my face, hot breath on my skin
It starts me to thinking about my horses, my kin

I could be at parties with laughter and mirth
But where I am right now is the best place on Earth.

 Merry Christmas everyone!
