that the KX3 is a much better CW rig, if like me CW is your mode of choice.

 Hi,

I have narrowed down to either a Flex 3000 or Elecraft KX3 for DX'ing and SDR
 with my MacBook Air.

Does anyone have experience with the KX3 rig and how it stacks up against the
 Flex 3000?

 Thank you,

 Craig

Can't find the side tone vol.
back to the K3 and KX3 real CW machines that just work.

Looks like the 1500 will wind up on eBay... I still give it some more time.. It
maybe that I just don't know how to use it correctly.

It seems to me it needs to be at least as good in CW as the K line.

It's more of a SBB SDR radio. I have done some 13 to 20 wpm keyboard CW with
it. IT did fine for me. Could not get It to work with a ST key.
Also works great on digital modes . I have well over a 100 countries on
digital QRP.

CW is my mode of choice and I am very happy with my Flex-3000. However,
to be fair, I don't use the internal CWX keyer. Instead I use an
external Winkeyer USB. There are a couple of advantages to this:

1) Keying speed is the same whether you are using Macros or Paddles.
2) You are not dependent on Windows process switching to generate clean
properly timed CW.

Full break-in, automatic zero beat to match RX signal, almost zero lag
time from key down to side tone, CW decoder integral, to name a few things

I love my Flex-3000 but mechanical relay on a CW rig is a terrible idea to
me.
The Flex-1500 does CW well on a tuned computer system.
If you have latency problems you will not like it.
If your computer underpowered or you can't tune your system you'll have
problems.

You are not hearing from all the people who have no CW issues or have given
up on the list due to a high signal noise ratio.
I love my FlexRadio rigs and would not part with them for anything but I am
not a CW op.

[Flexradio] Flex-1500 on CW (was Re: Flex 3000 for DX'ing and SDR)

2013-09-18 Thread Michael Babineau
Phil :

There are likely a couple of things that need adjustment. But first off if you
are expecting
full break-in on CW from the Flex-1500 then you might as well put it up for
sale now.
Properly adjusted it will work as well (break-in wise as a semi-break-in rig
like the Ft-817)
but it won't do full break-in CW.

If you are getting latency on the sidetone (which is likely the case) then you
need
to adjust a few parameters in PowerSDR.

Out of the box, PowerSDR should run on almost any machine of sufficient
horsepower
but it won't necessarily run well on CW. If you read the FLex-1500 manual
section
on CW and the Flex-1500 part of the PowerSDR release notes (Page 12) they
document
quite well the three main things that potentially need to be adjusted in
PowerSDR to allow
for smooth CW operation on the Flex-1500.

Note that you must STOP PowerSDR to make these changes and then START again
to determine how effective the changes are.

The first thing is adjusting the USB Driver Buffer Setting.

This is accessed via Setup/General/Options

It is a slider the goes from Conservative on the left to Aggressive on the
Right.
You want to make it as Aggressive as you can without causing drop-outs or
distortion
in your receive Audio. My suggestion is to adjust the slider only one position
to the right
at the time, exit the SETUP, START PowerSDR and listen to a station for a while
to determine
if the change in settings is causing an issues with receive audio. Repeat this
process over and over until you either get to the most Aggressive Setting
(unlikely) or
you start to hear audio drop out or significant distortion on RX. At that point
back it off one
position. Resist the temptation to go to the most Aggressive setting first as
it may cause
PowerSDR to hang up or quit (my experience).

The second adjustment is the audio buffer size.

Repeat the same procedure as above (i.e stopping PowerSDR, but this time
changing the setting
to one smaller then Starting PowerSDR).

Setup/Audio Buffer Size - You want this to be the smallest value that doesn't
cause drop- outs
or distortion on receive. ( i.e. 256 or 128 if possible)

Setup/DSP Buffer Size - CW RX (should be 2048) only reduce this if necessary
to further
diminish sidetone delay. Changing this value to a smaller one will have an
impact on the performance of the narrower CW RX filters. I wouldn't suggest
going any smaller than 1024 otherwise you are diminishing performance of
the receiver.

Adjusting the above three settings should give you reasonable performance on CW
with
no noticeable sidetone delay.

For anyone only using a Dual core machine, if this isn't enough there are a
couple of
other tricks that help, but I only suggest trying these as a last resort.

SETUP/DISPLAY Refresh Rates Main Display FPS (normally 15, can be reduced to 7
with no ill effects). Reducing this should improve the CW performance.

If you are really just running PowerSDR (which is what I suggest on a dual core
machine)
then you can increase the Process Priority by a notch with no ill effects.

SETUP/GENERAL/OPTIONS Process Priority (I don't recommend going with a setting
higher than Above Normal or High, the default setting is Normal).

The other worth mentioning is that if you are using the internal keyer in the
Flex-1500,
be aware that if you enable Iambic sending it will default to Iambic A. Many
people
(myself included) learned Iambic B and I couldn't send with Iambic A if my life
depended
on it.

The CW Keyers settings within PowerSDR can be accessed via the
Setup/General/DSP level
(yeah I know this doesn't make a lot of sense the first time).

For CW operation, in my experience with the last two releases of PowerSDR, you
need a minimum
hardware configuration of Intel Core Duo (2 GHZ), with WIN7 (XP works but you
will get more out
of your Dual-core processor with WIN7) and at least 4 GB of RAM. If you want
to run a lot of
other software (loggers, Digimode programs, email etc) then I recommend
something like an Intel
Core I5 based computer. I am currently using an Acer Laptop with a AMD
A10-4500m (Quad Core)
and 10 GB of RAM with WIN8 and it works great. Don't forget that the computer
is about 80%
of the Radio.

Best of luck

Setup/Audio Buffer Size  - You want this to be the smallest value that doesn't

I realized that I forgot to answer your question on how to adjust the Sidetone

To do this go to the Transmit tab (i.e. SETUP/Transmit). You will see

[Flexradio] Flex 1500 or KX3

2013-09-18 Thread Peter West
Been using my Flex 1500 almost exclusively for serious QRP contesting for
several years. Life got better when I replaced an ageing HP that ran 20 per
cent CPU to an I7 stripped down PC that runs around 2 per cent with the Flex.

I either use an external Idiom Press memory keyer or setup Writelog CW
memories. Everything works fine but...in high speed CW exchanges the T/R
switching time delayed by latency cuts into the confirmation reply of the
station that's running so I miss the T or TU of the TU and then his call. In
SSB you don't notice the slight latency although if you've got a second non-SDR
receiver running you can hear the slight delay. For regular speed CW contests
(22 to 25 wpm) there's really no problem but if the contester is running at 30
wpm or higher the loss of time is noticeable and makes it problematic running
QRP to know for certain the contact was completed.

Seriously considering a KX3 and the external amp (for those contests when
conditions suck) which will work on the Flex and has a built-in ATU. The
Kenwood TS-590 isn't off my list either.

[Flexradio] Expansion on previous question.

2013-09-18 Thread Getzy.org
Hi Folks,

This post is somewhat similar to a current thread being discussed -on the
merits of purchasing the KX3 or Flex 3000.

I am somewhat committed to trying a Flex or similar SDR radio. As I
understand, the Flex 5000 is no longer being manufactured, but is still
available in some stores/supply houses and can rarely be found used in some
other places (ebay, etc.).

As this will be my first foray into SDR, I'm not thinking that I want to invest
the full cost of the newest line (the 6000 series), but would consider the Flex
3000, 1500, or trying to find a used 5000 (or purchase from a store that still
has a stock).

1. Is there any possibility that replacement or other less expensive line
(similar to the 5000) will be offered in the near future?

2. I do work some qrp, but mostly 100W or so. The 1500 seems less of what I
want, which leaves the 3000 and some used or a 5000, not being offered directly
by the manufacturer (and not offering direct tech support anymore- I assume
this, although forums such as this may make up for the lack of direct
manufacturer support). If I'm even able to find a 5000, is it wise to make the
purchase with the manufacturer no longer making the unit and not offering
direct tech support/repair?

3. The 3000 has been described as a stripped down version of the 5000, and
has some things that I'm not excited about (BNC rather than so 239 antenna
connectors, etc.), but otherwise seems to offer most of the features that one
would like to have/experience/experiment with in an SDR radio. If I get a
3000, will this give me a true feel for the SDR experience, and after a
couple of years, give me enough of a feel for SDR to decide if I want to delve
more deeply and possibly look at something with more functionality or not?

4. Just out of curiosity, I assume that dropping the 5000 from the offerings
is meant to drive customers to the 6000 line as the replacement. I guess I
understand this, however, from my reading, it sure seems like there are a lot
of folks that are very happy with the 5000 and that there is still a lot of
active interest in the model. Other than driving folks toward the 6000, what
was behind the decision to drop the 5000? It seems to me that there is a
significant price differential between the two lines, and that there are those
who will likely never be interested in paying the costs associated with the
6000 series, but might have been able to swing the 5000- why take this option
off the table?

Thanks in advance for any input/advice. If this post is felt to be too
general/inappropriate for this forum, please feel free to reply directly. My
apologies, as I am a total newbie with respect to SDR.

73s,

Dave, WS0D

[Flexradio] CW on the 1500 or 3000

2013-09-18 Thread Kerry Miller
Guys,

I hate to see so many people giving up on their Flex because of the CW
latency. It used to be really bad but recent versions of PSDR really
improved things. I can use the internal sidetone up to about 18wpm now but
I still prefer to use my outboard keyer because there's still a little bit
of latency. I realize the signal is being generated with the same latency
but unless I'm doing a contest where the exchange is very fast it doesn't
matter really when the signal goes out - within reason.

If you're on a very slow computer, the latency will be worse. It's much
worse on my laptop than on my desktop with a 6-core AMD Phenom. The
laptop is an old Pentium with 4GB of RAM. Even then, I used it fine for FD
with my outboard memory keyer. I prefer the memory keyer to the keyer in
PSDR anyway, maybe just because I'm used to it.

If you're using the 1500, there are some settings for the USB interface you
can change. On both the 1500 and 3000 you can change the buffer size in
the filters and I think there's one other place to change the overall audio
buffer size or something (I'm not at the rig right now).

The outboard keyer is a small inconvenience, at least to me, to get the
killer RX filters. I wouldn't recommend it for a contester. The 1500 is a
great little rig (my daughter stole mine) but to me it's not a good to the
field radio because without carrying along a computer it's just a brick.
For a QRP rig in the shack, it's a blast and has almost as good RX as the
3000.

If you're having problems on CW, before you give up call the Flex support
guys or ask for help on here. I was very frustrated with mine at first
because I operate 100% CW but after seeing some guys on the list post about
how to speed things up I was much happier with it. There may also be some
information in the knowedgebase at the Flex web site.

I wouldn't trade my 3000 for the KX3, I do enjoy having 100 watts now and
then in pileups but even with the 3000 I run QRP most of the time. If
you're going out to the field, the KX3 is definitely the better rig.

I expect part of the reason for the multiple KX3 updates is because it's a
newer rig. New versions of PSDR were coming fast and furious for a while a
couple of years ago. The tracking notch filter is still pretty awesome!

FlexRadio still fully supports the Flex-5000 both for repair and service.

As this will be my first foray into SDR, I'm not thinking that I want to
invest the full cost of the newest line (the 6000 series), but would
consider the Flex 3000, 1500, or trying to find a used 5000 (or purchase
from a store that still has a stock).

 1. Is there any possibility that replacement or other less expensive line
(similar to the 5000) will be offered in the near future?

 2. I do work some qrp, but mostly 100W or so. The 1500 seems less of
what I want, which leaves the 3000 and some used or a 5000, not being
offered directly by the manufacturer (and not offering direct tech support
anymore- I assume this, although forums such as this may make up for the
lack of direct manufacturer support). If I'm even able to find a 5000, is
it wise to make the purchase with the manufacturer no longer making the
unit and not offering direct tech support/repair?

 3. The 3000 has been described as a stripped down version of the 5000,
and has some things that I'm not excited about (BNC rather than so 239
antenna connectors, etc.), but otherwise seems to offer most of the
features that one would like to have/experience/experiment with in an SDR
radio. If I get a 3000, will this give me a true feel for the SDR
experience, and after a couple of years, give me enough of a feel for SDR
to decide if I want to delve more deeply and possibly look at something
 with more functionality or not?

 4. Just out of curiosity, I assume that dropping the 5000 from the
offerings is meant to drive customers to the 6000 line as the replacement.
I guess I understand this, however, from my reading, it sure seems like
there are a lot of folks that are very happy with the 5000 and that there
is still a lot of active interest in the model. Other than driving folks
toward the 6000, what was behind the decision to drop the 5000? It seems
to me that there is a significant price differential between the two lines,
and that there are those who will likely never be interested in paying the
costs associated with the 6000 series, but might have been able to swing
the 5000- why take this option off the table?

Thanks in advance for any input/advice. If this post is felt to be too
general/inappropriate for this forum, please feel free to reply directly.
My apologies, as I am a total newbie with respect to SDR.

Flex says the chassis became unavailable except at a cost that would
have made the parts cost for the 5000A about the same as the 6500, so
dropping it was a no-brainer.

Craig at Flex says that PSDR continues to be a mainline product (as
the 1500 and 3000 depend on it), so the 5000 has a definite sw
future. If it meets your needs and you can find a bargain from
someone going for a 6000 series I would say go for it. I would buy
one except I am so happy with my 3K.

Dave,

I have a 5000 and love it. As for continuing support, there is NO question

service completed in very short turnaround time. PwrSDR is supported as

The 5000 and the 3000 are great sdr radios.. I have a 5000 and love it...
You can get a used 5000 now for the price of a new 3000 and it has a
slightly better receiver, quieter fan, more antenna ports, etc. But since
the software for both is the same, the features in software are identical.

[Flexradio] Running PowerSDR on the Mac

2013-09-18 Thread Craig Schroeder
Thank you everyone for all your great feedback and advice on the KX3 vs the
Flex-3000! You have given me a lot to think about...

In regard to the comments about using the Flex-3000 with a newer MacBook Pro or
Air, I do believe the Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter for $29 from Apple will
work. I talked with a Flex Radio staff member yesterday who said he has a
colleague using a Flex radio with his MacBook Air, which does not have Firewire.

Unfortunately, as most PC laptops have moved away from Firewire, Flex Radio
does not appear to have plans to update PowerSDR to run native on a Mac.
Instead, we must purchase Windows, install Bootcamp, partition the Mac hard
drive, load PowerSDR and operate the Mac, with its awesome graphics
capabilities, as an ordinary PC laptop. With so few good SDR options for the
Mac, this seems like a no-brainer to me! :)
