Nope. This is normal in many industries. Basically it does two things: 1) You get a shot at the first batch 2) It give the company more money to actually build the things to sell. Stan, No, they can't. PowerSDR is partially open source. Therefore they cannot charge for it. Also, as Tim pointed out, the current radios (FLEX-1500, FLEX-3000, FLEX-5000) fill positions in the marketplace. Therefore, there are no plans to discontinue them. Consequently, PowerSDR will continue to be developed. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info -Original Message- From: flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz [mailto:flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz] On Behalf Of Stan Sent: Friday, May 18, 2012 7:37 AM To: flexra...@yahoogroups.com Cc: FlexRadio reflector Subject: Re: [Flexradio] [FlexRadio] Flex 6000 series $199.00 per year software updates and tech support for the 6000 series. Rather than continue enhance PSDR I rather see a new middle layer be written for the Flex- series radios that can take adavantage of the new presentation layer that SmartSDR brings to the table. That really is the only way that the true HW capabilities of the 5K can be exploited.. Re: [Flexradio] [FlexRadio] Flex 6000 series
No, they can't. PowerSDR is partially open source. Therefore they cannot charge for it. Well, strictly speaking, that's correct. They can't charge for the open source software itself. However... Nothing prevents Flex from charging for SUPPORT. This is the same model that several major Linux vendors use (such as Red Hat). And, of course, they can charge for updates to their firmware and drivers, which are proprietary. And the changes they make to the open source portions of PSDR could rely upon those (proprietary, distributed for an annual charge) firmware or driver changes. One COULD get the open source code in source form and change it to use the OLD firmware if one were so inclined. There are, therefore, many ways to indirectly charge for open source software... [Flexradio] The SDR Buzz
I remember getting my SDR 1000 a few years ago and nearly every day I got updates to try and enjoyed it very much it was a real buzz, then that all stopped. I got my F5K and started to use it as a radio and enjoy and still enjoy it very much but not quite with the same buzz I had back in the early days of the SDR1000. I recently acquired a (flame proof underwear now on) a TS590 to replace my TS2000 and have been using this for CW keeping the F5K for SSB and AM, in reality I can work all the stuff on my TS590 as I can on the F5K and vice versa, but being a real CW novice the use of physical knobs and not being distracted by what is going on on the screen is rather useful for my concentration at the moment J Would I love a new radio yes course I would but would it in reality give me the same buzz as in the past probably not, would I be able to work anymore stations probably not. I think this can be levelled at most technology things nowadays whether its TV's, smartphones, computers etc etc perhaps I'm just getting old. [Flexradio] Some 6700 questions
Order is placed but I was thinking about some setup issues and wondering if anyone here has any details. 1. I believe the audio in/out is processed over the network, correct? 2. How much router setup is involved or is it done automatically? Is the setup similar to the remoteRig process? 3. With all the IO on the radio, how is CW keying accomplished if I want to use a key at the control location? Do I need something like a K1EL USB keyer that connects to the SDR software? 4. How is TX audio handled at the control location? Does it use the soundcard mic input and pass that over the network to the radio? 5. Is the a provision to work with VAC for CW Skimmer or do you think Skimmer will (eventually) talk directly to the 6700 as it does the QS1R to be able to decode multiple bands at a time? 6. Software updates - Not too fond of this but I can understand it I guess. BUT I am concerned that I may have to pay for updates to get basic advertised functions that are not implemented yet at the time of initial shipping...such as remote over the internet (not just the LAN). IMO any subscription for updates should commence AFTER all the functionality is implemented and working correctlyTHEN you can pay for new features and updates. 7. Re: [Flexradio] Some 6700 questions
Greg, Those all all good questions. As for 6. Software Updates, since all is speculation at this point I think it useful to remember who we are dealing with. In my experience Gerald, K5SDR, feels that fairness trumps business. In my own case he did the right thing at the cost of hundreds of dollars and as far as I could tell never even considered doing anything other than what was right. I believe he will apply that principle to ensure that whatever changes are made to software distribution are fair and reasonable for loyal customers. One thing to remember is that the whole thing about obsolescence of computers is largely nonsense. Does the computer you bought still do what you bought it for? If so it is not obsolete, anymore than last year's car is obsolete. If Flex stopped development of PowerSDR today the 5000a, et al, would still be remarkable rigs. Also, PowerSDR is open source and can continue to be upgraded by the community in the same manner that characterizes Linux. Another thing is that the software for the 6000 series is NOT PowerSDR but a new software product, SmartSDR (there is no mention of open source) with a new support philosophy. This separation of software families is a sensible way to address some of the economic realities of handling the costs of software development and support. Good point on the software Ed. I guess I would just be a little more comfortable with the option of addtional year updates to commence after the software provides the basic advertised featuresmainly the internet connectivity outside the LAN. Although I doubt it will take a year for that feature to become available :) Definitely looking forward to this new rig. Flex has stated that these models are still necessary and will continue to be manufactured supported. Also, they have made it clear that development work on PowerSDR will continue into the foreseeable future. Hi, Robert; Aside from upgrading one's BIOS, etc., DO CONSIDER turning off your anti-malware application(s), if you have any. I had fought this same once in a while issue of the audio either stopping altogether, or going fuzzy on me. I'd stop, the restart the radio, using the START button, and all would be fine again. A friend of mine had this same issue, and he just happened to note that the anti-virus app was doing an update of the cootie list database in his computer! -At this time, his PowerSDR's audio went bad. (Start, stop resolved the issue.) We discussed this, and decided to uninstall our malware apps. NO MORE troubles for both is us. In my case, it rarely had a problem, but it NEVER would operate overnight. -Left ON, the audio would always be bad in the morning. Now, I can leave my computer and Flex running 24 hours a day; The longest I had let the system run was six weeks. The restart was to install or upgrade an app, as an example; PowerSDR was running perfectly. Your computer's problem may well be a different cause; -Just be aware of the applications that are trying to help you, and wind up getting the data out of sync. If not the malware apps, it could possibly be some other routine that is running in your computer. This has been confirmed in operation by some attempting to use their Flex radios with linear amplifiers using a low drive level of around 5 watts. I had this confirmed in a telephone conversation with a technical person from Flex Radios. This condition may vary depending on the type of linear amp being used. However, assuming a bandwidth of 192 kHz and a sample rate of 245 MHz, doesn't that only give an extra 5 bits or so of effective resolution? That still leaves us 3 bits short of the 5000A ADC, which still means 18 dB less dynamic range. Maybe I missed it in the PDF file, but I didn't see a dynamic range spec. 73, Clay W7CE On 5/18/2012 3:44 PM, Robert McGwier wrote: Clay : The difference is more than made up in the the fact that the new AD operates at 245 MHz and the old AD is 200 kHz and you get huge processing gain in the downsample and filter process greatly increases the dynamic range. [Flexradio] CAT Control Odd Behavior
Hi Folks! I am working on a program to control my Flex-5000A in a modest way through the CAT control mechanism of PowerSDR and I am experiencing some odd behavior. First, I am using com0com to map COM20 on either my test program or a terminal program to the PowerSDR CAT port on COM21. That works fine. However, when I issue a ZZRM0; command, I receive only one signal strength reading each time I issue the command...at least initially. After a third ZZRM0; command I start to see two responses. Instead of the normal single response of ZZRM0-83.2 dBm;, I am seeing ZZRM0-82.2 dBm;ZZRM0-82 dBm;. The each time I execute the command, I see an additional reading in the response. This is happening with both a terminal program and a piece of code that I wrote to do it for me. I can only clear this up by rebooting PowerSDR, but it comes right back. Any ideas? Re: [Flexradio] Flex 6000 Family Dynamic Range
Clay, Just in rough numbers, you get a 1/2-bit for every divide-by-two decimation you do. If you are looking at dynamic range in a 500Hz bandwidth (this is what we typically do). The math I generally use to get there is log(f1/f2)/log(2)/2. I just think this way as a programmer (do everything in base 2). So if you take log(245.76E6/500)/log(2)/2 you get 9.4 extra bits when added to the 16 gives you 25.5 bits (152.7dB dynamic range). This assumes all 16-bits of the ADC are good which is probably not a good assumption. I'd have to pull out the notes and look at the data sheet again, but this should give you a rough idea. Hopefully I haven't made an additional duh today myself! Bottom line -- there's plenty of dynamic range. Also, if you are interested, we are using Xilinx DSP48E1 blocks which use an 18x25 multiplier and so Xilinx tools generate the on-board DDS as a 25-bit DDS by default --- again to preserve the SFDR of the receiver. We could add extra bits, but 25 are fine for the same reason. I believe the audio in/out is processed over the network, correct? The radio has mic and speaker connections. When these are used, no audio goes over the network. This is what will be in the software when the radio is first shipped. 2. How much router setup is involved or is it done automatically? Is the setup similar to the remoteRig process? This is still TBD, but we have had many conversation about how to make this very simple. Simplicity is a key design goal for the radio and the software. 3. With all the IO on the radio, how is CW keying accomplished if I want to use a key at the control location? Do I need something like a K1EL USB keyer that connects to the SDR software? When the radio is first shipped, the key will need to be plugged into the radio. Remote will obviously have to be handled differently. 4. How is TX audio handled at the control location? Does it use the soundcard mic input and pass that over the network to the radio? Same as #1. Audio is kept inside the radio for the first release 5. Is the a provision to work with VAC for CW Skimmer or do you think Skimmer will (eventually) talk directly to the 6700 as it does the QS1R to be able to decode multiple bands at a time? We are working on the details of all of this as we speak. More details as they become available. Rest assured, we recognize that digital modes are extremely important for this radio. We agree with this in principal. This is one reason why those that sign up for the limited edition will receive two years of software updates included instead of just one. 7. CAT compatability with loggers...is this going to use the same FLEX 5K protocol or something totally different where software authors are going to have to add another radio script? CAT is too popular and important to ignore. We are building a CAT interface. However, we would be delighted to see the community realize that CAT is a kludge and needs to be replaced. We will have our own control language for the radio (spoken between the client and the radio). We would also be interested in other well considered standards that emerge to take the place of CAT. Re: [Flexradio] Will there be a yearly charge for future PSDR releases for non-6000 owners?
This is probably going to sound counter-intuitive on the surface, but I would like to communicate this message: You WANT us to charge for software updates. Why? When you purchase a radio, it is an investment. It is in your best interest for us to continue to create software innovations that will make your radio more and more capable. If we do this, your radio will stay current with technology (within reason) with new software and it will retain it's value and continue to be a source of enjoyment for years to come. We have shown that this is what we want to do as a company by doing it -- we want to innovate and we want to provide you with the best technology we can. We love hearing our customers thank us for getting to download a new radio. I can't begin to tell you all the ideas that we have and how excited we are about delivering on those ideas. Now if you figure that we can provide 'x' improvement over the years, but with a small investment from most people in the community, there is a multiplicative effect: your dollars are multiplied by all others who also buy and give you leverage in getting more advanced features that make your radio more fun and help it retain value by staying current. In effect, you get '10x' or some multiplier on your investment of a software update. Our objective is for you to say YES, I want that update because if has a lot of new features and is well worth the $200 FlexRadio is charging. If this is not the case, we know you won't buy. There is another effect here -- we know that we have to build what you want or we won't be able to sell it. By charging, it places more control in your hands, albeit indirectly. I believe that you want new, cool, useful, advanced features and I know that we want to give them to you. For us to be able to do more, quicker, takes money to pay more engineers. These engineers will, in turn, develop those new features. While it would be better if we developed and gave away software indefinitely for free, it is not realistic. I believe that you want us to charge for software. 73, Steve Stephen Hicks, N5AC, AAR6AM VP Engineering FlexRadio Systems™ 4616 W Howard Ln Ste 1-150 Austin, TX 78728 Phone: 512-535-4713 x205 Email: st...@flexradio.com Web: www.flexradio.com *Tune In Excitement™* PowerSDR™ is a trademark of FlexRadio Systems On Fri, May 18, 2012 at 10:41 AM, Tim Ellison t.m.ellison...@gmail.comwrote: At this time it is not.
