The deadline for submitting your preferred name has just passed. I
expect it'll take some time to translate everything into English
before the game becomes available. It's only been a couple weeks.
since they got the funding. I've found that they've tended to post
news to the forum on
www.audiogames.net
I would have expected backers to get news first but I guess they don't
really understand the politics of that. I expect we'll all know pretty
quickly when it comes out.

[Audyssey] Querying Timers In Functions Outside The Main Loop, and AI Question

2016-01-15 Thread Gavin Grundlingh

Hi all,

I'm writing a portable player class in BGT. I'm putting it into its own
file to be included in other scripts. Is there a way to query timers,
such as walk timers, jump timers, weapon timers, and so on, outside a
main while loop? I'd like the class to have as many of its own
predefined methods as possible.

Also, are there any good books or articles to read on artificial
intelligence in games? I'm a complete newbie at getting enemies to
appear to do their own thing on a board.

Regards,

Gavin

[Audyssey] what to buy - Re: Portable interactive fiction game playing device/unit

2016-01-15 Thread Charles Rivard
From what I know, the selection of games that will work for blind people on
a mobile device is much larger if that device is an iDevice. There is also
a much wider selection of other apps that are Voice-Over friendly. Plus,
the amount of material that you can use to learn to use the device is
greater for iDevices because there are more blind people using those
devices.

Hi Josh,

I am well aware of Android and its games. In fact, was considering one
for a very long time. Thing is while Android has a fair selection it
isn't the same selection so user preference would have a lot to do
with the purchasing process here. So while I haven't forgotten about
Android I'm uncertain myself if that is the way I personally want to
go for my phone purchase.

Hi Dark,

Oh, I don't doubt that. Unfortunately, I am extremely cash strapped
right now so haven't had the funds or means available to purchase a
new iPhone so have had to do without that advantage myself. Still, I
do have it on the things to do once those funds become available to

Hi Jacob,

Cool. Sounds like a nifty little gaming device you got there. The
only
thing is while I do like interactive fiction games I'm not sure I'd
want to pay out the investment for something like this myself since
I

only play interactive fiction games occasionally. If the /Raspberry

investment in something like it since it would come in handy in

with little to nothing to do. Dragging around a laptop isn't really
an

something like your Raspberry Pie being a nice little device between

Hi,
I can't say I'm too thrilled over yet another Space Invaders Clone in the
Audio Games community. Why not try to do something original like bilateral
movement in a space shooter. It has been done with Tank Commander and
Shades of Doom after all, and that was over ten years ago. I think the
Audio Games business suffers from a quite severe case of idea recycling
and lack of innovative development.

On the positive side though, I much prefer other titles by this developer
such as the Inquisitor series or the Rally game.

When I did the first app - blindfold racer - I met with a bunch of teens
at Lighthouse Miami, and they came up with the name.
I stuck with the blindfold brand, and now people know it. All of the
icons pictures are similar in that they have a red blindfold clipart
across the picture relating to the game. For example, with blindfold air
hockey, its a blindfold on top of an air hockey machine.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "because they are open source
they're

a
danger". A *lot* of very well known and successful software is open
source:
7-zip, nvda, the linux operating system, just to name a few.

The very fact that they are open source is a danger. Plus it would be
more
work for a developer, and the blind iDevice user market is far larger
than
the blind Android user market, plus the vast number of phones and
different
operating systems is a problem when it comes to Androids. The number
of
iDevice types and operating systems is not much of a factor. Anything
7.0

or
higher is compatible for iDevice users, and most devices will be able
to

use
the software.

[Audyssey] Blindfold Games - 25 games and growing

2016-01-15 Thread Blindfold Games
At Blindfold Games, we're building audio games for visually impaired kids,
teens and adults. Since 2013, we've created over two dozen games that are
enjoyed by thousands of blind people.

This blog follows how the games are created, why we pick certain games to
build, and offers insight for both blind and sighted people into how the games
are enjoyed.

Recently, I received the following email:

_I spend hours playing blindfold solitaire, and have purchased all of the
solitaire packs. The in-app purchases are well worth it. Each time I buy a new
pack, I spend hours learning it till I can beat it. I also love Blindfold
Dominoes, Blindfold Spades, and one of the newer games, Blindfold Roulette. I
thoroughly enjoy Blindfold Racer. I often played the Blindfold Games before
bed, when I first wake up to help me wake up, and through my lunch hour at
work. I have tried Blindfold Hopper, and Blindfold Pong, but I admit I'm not
much good at them._

_I hope that you will continue to make the games. I enjoy all of them and will
continue to support the Blindfold series. Thank all of you who make the
Blindfold Games possible. J.N., Arizona State University_

You will not get a large amount of storage with a tablet. If that's a major

Hi,

Thanks for this.

Do you know how well window eyes would work on 1 of these tablets? This is
the screen reader that I use.

In addition, have you seen a surface? Are they any good?

I've had laptops over the years and whilst I do like them, the biggest
problem I think for me with laptops is that they are quite heavy and the
battery never seems to last that long.

Having been an iPad user for around 3 years now I've gotten used to the long
battery life an iPad bosts. I do use a Bluetooth keyboard with my iPad.

So yes I'm looking for something that's small ish but not too small as to
not be compatible with things, pretty powerful obviously with plenty of
space on the drive.

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] gaming on windows tablets?

Hi. I have used a Dell Venue 8 Pro 64 GB tablet now as my primary Windows
device for about a year.
It has the Atom processor they all have, which escapes my memory at the
moment, but I know it's a z something. They either all have the f or g
varient of that processor until you get into the laptop price point, where
you start seeing intel Core brand.
The thing is the one I've tried is a 2 GB ram variety. I wanted to see what
a 1 GB was like, but I imagine it makes much more use of the page file and
therefore suffers a little.
They all use MMC, which is like an sd card, until you get into big name ones
like the Ms Surface. I can tell you this right now. We do not have any games
that will tax the system. If you want to play Swamp, either get a bluetooth
mouse or something similar, and you'll be fine.
I'm about to go into technical stuff. I've finished my basic info packet, so
if you're not interested in product reviews and recommended configurations,
you can stop here.
As I said, I used the Dell Venue 8 Pro. I bought it as an early adopter. The
Windows tablet market has exploded at this point manufatcturers popping up
with new ones fairly frequently. When I bought in, there were just a few:
the Dell Venue 8 Pro series (one with 32 gb and 1 gig of ram, the other,
mine, with 64 gb and 2 gigs of ram), the Toshiba Encore 2 (with similar
specs), the Lenovo Miix2 which was in my oppinion, the worse buy), and the
TransformerBook by either Asus or Acer (I have a hard time with keeping
those straight).
My Dell has served me well. I bought a Fintie Folio case which came with a
bluetooth 3.0 keyboard. It basically was a laptop when unfolded. I also
bought a bluetooth mouse. Both are sufficient for gaming, though the
keyboard is a little bit truncated. If you take gaming very seriously, I
suggest a workstation setup at home with a dedicated Bluetooth keyboard and
mouse, or a keyboard with trackpad if you prefer.
Please be aware that any of those early adopters tend to have some slight
issues. My Dell wireless card occasionally decides to flip out, taking the
bluetooth with it. A quick restart generally fixes this, but It's something
to be aware of, especially if you don't take the time to learn how to use
your touchscreen with a screen reader. Speaking of screen readers, I haven't
used the Jaws For Windows screen reader in several years. NVDA is my current
preference, and it works well enough on my tablet. In fact, I strongly
suggest the touchscreen add-on, as the tablet's touchscreen can actually be
quite useful. Aside from this, I have used Microsoft Narrator with great
success on a keyboard and on the touchscreen. Far gone are the days where
Narrator is a joke. NVDA is better, but Narrator is far from crap. It's
probably right around as good as Talkback, if you use Android, though not
quite so good as Voiceover. It has the advantage of always working in every
prompt, something which NVDA (and JAWS for Windows, as I understand) don't.
It is good, in my oppinion, to learn Narrator at least a little. It's on
every Windows computer, and it's good to know it in case a better option is
unavailable for whatever reason.
Frankly, I strongly recommend a different tablet. The Nextbook Flexx 10.1
and 11.6 inch are both good. Both come with a keyboard that sticks on with a
latching connection. It includes a trackpad, and the keyboard has two
standard size usb ports, if you want to plug stuff in. Both the 10 and 11
inch varients come with 2 gigs of ram and the same intel Atom processor.
However, generally the reasons for getting a tablet are multiple. Price is
generally a factor, as is portability. I have loved my Dell for that. It's
an 8-inch tablet, so there've been plenty

This doesn't sound like an agonizingly hard game to implement, honestly.
As

long as the dev knows how to build whatever environment you want (side
scroller vs 3-d or whatever) the concepts you describe, on the surface at
least, don't look that bad.
If you're really serious about trying to make this a reality, I'd suggest
drafting a more detailed concept for the game - write up everything from
scoring to speed of various characters, because that's what you would need
to provide for development to get started.
For me at least, game design - balancing it, adding to it and then
balancing those additions - has been one of the most complicated parts of
development, at least from a time spent perspective. If you can take out
all

that work (and maybe give the dev sounds for the game as well) I really
don't think this would be to hard to build, as long as you can find a dev
willing to put in the time.
Either that, or as Milos said, you can always learn bgt yourself. If you
go
that rout, I'd be happy to try and get you started; there's a learning
curve
and a mindset you need in order to start programming, but once you have
that

down, the actual code isn't that bad.

Simon,
I haven't had a ride for ages now! Well yes, a nice idea. I have a totally
different kind of idea in my head, but I decided to start learning bgt for
this matter, and hope one day to be able to implement it. If not, then the
falt is noone's but mine only... There were many ideas on this list
brought
by us users, but the developers, I would say, don't like much hearing
those,
because only they know how much work a gae like your or mine can
involve...
So that's my advice, as when you have an idea, the real-life practice
shows

that only you can implement it, unles someone else asks you for it.

hello all,
this is a very much half formed idea at the moment, but thought I would
throe it out there to see what people think.
the idea I had, was for a horse riding game, where the back story is,
that

whilst on holiday, you decide to hire a horse and check out the
countryside, unfortunately however, the only horse hire business in the
area, is run by a rather grumpy and sadistic individual, (possibly called
sadistic Stacy) who only really likes 3 things in life, her horses,
sitting around watching tv, and having a nice full cash till. 5 things
she
really hates, are customers, receiving complaints, having horses come
back

in poor condition, riders coming back late, and having to get off of her
behind to go collect a horse and rider. as you are on holiday, you only
have a certain budget to spend, which would normally get you a number of
rides, but received complaints, injuries to the horse, coming back late,
and having to be collected, will all cost extra. even more unfortunately
for you, (as in real life sometimes), the countryside is full of mean
spirited individuals, such as farmers who will complain to Stacy if you
damage too much of there crops, or scare there

does it just say something like, "Oops, that doesn't match."? Or is it

Subject: [Audyssey] blindfold rummy is released

Blindfold rummy for IOS has been released today. I found that out when I did
a search. Here is description from app store:

Blindfold Rummy is a fully accessible Rummy card game for both sighted and
visually impaired people, designed for rapid audio play.

Blindfold Rummy comes with Gin Rummy where most or all of the cards can be
combined into sets and runs and the point value of the remaining unmatched
cards is low. When you have very few cards that are not in a set or a run,
you can knock, and the player with the lowest points in their hand wins the
round.

The game is played until 100 points, or whatever target score you set, is
achieved by one of the players. You play against up to 3 computer players.

You can customize the game to your liking: how much extra information is
spoken and how quickly it is spoken, how many sound effects are used amongst
other things. And you can post your high scores to Twitter or Facebook.

Blindfold Rummy was suggested by several blind gamers who enjoyed Blindfold
Spades and Blindfold Hearts.

[Audyssey] Blindfold Racer: How can a blind person drive with their ears?

2016-01-15 Thread Blindfold Games
How does a blind person drive with their ears?
==

Almost every game in the App Store is a video game – you watch the screen and
press buttons. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

Our first game, Blindfold Racer is an audio game – you play be listening to the
road, and hold your iPhone like a steering wheel. And you hear music in your
ears. Turn the phone to the right, you go right. Rotate to the left, you go
left.

When you get too close to the left side of the road, the music in your left ear
gets louder. Likewise for the right side of the road. When the music is in
the center of your head, you are in the middle of the road.

Blindfold Racer is a multi-level game: each time you complete a level – a track
– you move to the next, slightly harder level.

Blind people complete first 5 levels fairly quickly, and like to play the game
for hours. Sighted people have a much harder time – most need to close their
eyes while playing.

As one blind teen girl said to me while she was at level 12: “I can’t wait to
play against my sighted friends. I will so beat them!”

Watch this short video of teens playing the game (

[Audyssey] Blindfold Racer: If you can see, then you are a bad listener

2016-01-15 Thread Blindfold Games
If you can see, then you are a bad listener
==

When I created the tutorial for Blindfold Racer, I was really confused why
blind teens had no problem understanding the tutorial, and sighted adults would
get confused.

I added more pauses ("tap the screen to continue") between each tutorial
instruction, or more tried rephrasing the sentence, but they just didn't
understand. Then an auditory therapist explained to me how adults lose their
ability to listen and comprehend without seeing something to reinforce what
they are learning. Blind people can't rely on their sight, so their auditory
attention skills are far superior.

Blind people develop their auditory cortex in lieu of using their visual cortex.

I learned the true extent of this when I collaborated with a blind gamer to
build a Blindfold Sudoku game. If you are unfamiliar with Sudoku, the basic
idea is that you must fill a 9×9 grid with digits so that each column and each
row contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 with no duplicates.

When I play Sudoku, I need to see the entire puzzle to solve it. Blindfold
Sudoku tells you what number is in each cell, or row, or column and from that,
you must create the image in your head. Blind gamers are able to do this; very
few sighted people can.

My blog follows the development of the game, and other apps that we’re building
that don’t require using your eyes. It’s a different way of perceiving the
world, and it’s amazing what you can learn.

Re: [Audyssey] gaming on windows tablets?

2016-01-15 Thread Dakotah Rickard
The plain fact is that the Windows on these is generally 32-bit.
Also, as for "running stuff off an sd card" that's just how these are made now.
As for the surface, as I said you might be better off going with a laptop if
you're getting into that price point. It's not that the surface is bad. Far
from it. It's just that the Surface is kind of like the ultrabook of tablets.
What I mean is that its footprint is good. If you get the Surface or Surface
Pro 3, you're not looking at dealing with Windows RT, which we can't really
use. It's just that the surface is generally several hundred dollars. At that
point, you could just get a laptop with a decent battery and an ssd which might
suit your needs better.
I have several games, dropbox, and basic productivity stuff on my tablet, and
that does take me past the 32 gb mark. However, I was floating beneath that for
a good while. You also must remember that you can install games to sd cards.
It's not a bad setup, just one you should consider carefully.

[Audyssey] Blindfold Racer: A very, very, very big iPhone

2016-01-15 Thread Blindfold Games
10 times larger than an iPhone 6s
==

When the iPhone 6S came out, people were talking about how big the screen was,
and how much more you could do on the phone with such a big screen. Larger
screens means that games can display a bigger environment, and they would be
more fun.

Having designed audio games for the past year or so, these new screens are tiny
compared to the image you can maintain in your brain. I stumbled onto this
idea when I was building the cryptogram game.

When I design an audio game, I first design the screen, so that I can see how
the game operates. For example, with the Sudoku game on a 9x9 board, I create
a board on the iPhone screen, and the start programming the game. The position
for row 1, column 1, is in the upper left corner of the phone, and the position
for row 9, column 9 is in the lower right corner of the phone.

When the audio game is completed, and all the blind gamers that have tested the
game say the game is ready for the App Store, I modify the app to make the
screen dark. That way sighted gamers playing the game have no advantage over
blind gamers.

When a blind gamer plays, she flicks her finger right or left, up or down, to
move around within the puzzle. The screen could be one inch by one inch, and
the flicking would still work. The screen could be 1 foot by 1 foot, and her
flicking would still work. Screen size is completely irrelevant.

When a game designer builds an audio game, the playing field is your brain -
not the screen. That gives the game designer an infinite space to layout the
game. In a visual game, the screen is a tiny window into a virtual world, and
the gamer must move the window to play the game. In an audio game, you are in
the virtual reality of the game, and not restricted by a tiny window. Your
ears tell you what the virtual world looks like, and you use your body - your
hands, your arms, which way you are facing- to move within this world.

If you've never tried an audio game before, check out Blindfold Racer and keep
your eyes closed. You'll appreciate how immersed into an alternate reality you
can be while playing a game.

My blog follows the development of the game, and other apps that we’re building
that don’t require using your eyes. It’s a different way of perceiving the
world, and it’s amazing what you can learn.

Check out our blog, where you can download any of the games for free:

Re: [Audyssey] world of warcraft

2016-01-15 Thread Kenneth Downey
It seems to me that I just saw something about a blind WOW player somewhere,
maybe on Youtube, but I just remember wondering how he could do it.

[Audyssey] Blindfold games, a complete list of links

2016-01-15 Thread Ken Downey
Having begun working with Marty of Kid Friendly Software, I asked him if he had
a list of links to all his game. Indeed, he does, and it's here:
www.blindfoldgames.org/apps-we-built/
One of the reasons I asked him for this list is because, as you know, if you
type blindfold games or kid friendly software into the app store, you get tons
of irrelevant results. I hope this makes things easier for you guys to find the
games you're looking for.
