[gentoo-user] openoffice-bin-4.0.1 - no menu text on top
I have been hit by a bug that I don't know how to go about it. First my login manager slim is not showing any username / password text upon log in; now Openoffice-bin has no menu text on top. How to go about this bug? I have four systems two x86 and two amd64 one x86 and one amd64 are effected by this bug, two other system working normally :-/ -- Joseph

Do you mean: emerge -vae app-office/openoffice-bin or emerge -vae slim In both cases I get 306 packages needs rebuilding, this will be a log way to try to fix this problem :-/ -- Joseph

In addition I have tried fc-list and try to compare font on the same systems, they are all the same. system called atom - not effected system called syscon2 - effected by not showing text the menu. All fonts that are in atom are present in syscon2 so I don't think this is problem with the fonts. -- Joseph

That said, I have more confidence in Apache managing OO than I do TDF with LO, having observed TDF's mailing lists for several months (before finally dropping off in favor of Apache OO). Ben If you want it to stay in the tree, you will have to find someone to maintain it or maintain it yourself. Otherwise, it looks like OOo is going to be checking out pretty soon. It must be one of the most annoying things in Gentoo when OOo fails at the very last minute! SNIP Before I start again, shall I switch to libreoffice-3.3.1 or is it not yet as polished as OOo? I found a post on the forums that mentioned disabling the nsplugin as a fix. You may want to try that if it is not a really long compile for you. If it is a long one, may want to wait and see if anyone else thinks this will work. Dale :-) :-)

I am having problems building openoffice - it gets to the IDL files (actual file it hangs on can vary) and seems to crash part of X and the build hangs. Anyone seen this before? - it is happening on only one of my systems and I google isnt showing me any similar situations. BillK

Also try build with j=-1 Done that, plus ~210 gigabytes spare, tried no ccache, blank cflags etc etc, and its built successfully many times on this machine - up until a month or so ago. However, I'm running python-updater as Ive discovered a few other things are not working, so its probably some obscure part of the build chain/supporting apps is broken. Billk

Hello, For years now, I have used openoffice to edit word file with tables. Now no matter what version word doc, I cannot edit and file that end in .doc with a simple table. I can edit a .doc file but upon reload the formatting is scrambled. I always save them as word (.doc) XP/97 format. It sounds like the USE flags got changed and I need to rebuild OpenOffice. I have OO-3.1.1 with these flags (cups dbus eds gnome gstreamer gtk java kde ldap linguas_en linguas_en_GB linguas_en_US nsplugin opengl pam) Ideas on to flags before I recompile it? (the linguas look suspicious to me The bin version of 3.1.1 only has these flags: (gnome java kde LINGUAS=en_GB) suggestions? James
[gentoo-user] openoffice fails on qt_plugins_3.3rc
Hello, Openoffice 3.0 failed so I installed version 3.1.0. It gives this message: QSettings: failed to open file '/usr/qt/3/etc/settings/qt_plugins_3.3rc' terminate called after throwing an instance of 'com::sun::star::uno::RuntimeException' Abiword works. However, I've had trouble with OO in the past, base on obscure MS fonts missing, so, I'm not sure I have the necessary fonts install. Also using kde-4.2.4 and gcc-4.1.2. Any help or ideas are appreciated. James

More info at bug 256773. Perhaps you can make sense of it and even get your question answered, it's all a bit over my head. I would assume that USE=nsplugin gives you browser plugins to view OOo files. It's a major hassle but have you looked in the emerge log for clues? Perhaps the plugins couldn't be built and th reason is buried deep in that massive build log. In other words maybe it build the FF2 plug-in instead of FF3? If that is even possible. I could be totally wrong. :)

Does openoffice-bin have the same problem? Since you can't have both of them installed, use quickpkg to make a binary package of your openoffice installation before unmerging it. Using KDE 3.5.9, OOo 3.0.0 USE='cups dbus gtk java kde ldap linguas_en linguas_en_GB nsplugin opengl pam' International keyboard support changed recently with the upgrade to xorg 1.5.3 with evdev. Before the xorg upgrade, I had the international keyboard layout specified in my xorg.conf: Section InputDevice Identifier Keyboard0 Driver kbd Option XkbLayout us_intl # Enable accents EndSection If you're using the (default) evdev interface you should comment out the old style input devices for your keyboard and mouse in xorg.conf. Since implementing xorg 1.5.3 with evdev, I use the KDE keyboard tool to change the keyboard layout 'on the fly'. In KDE I've set up my keyboard as a generic 105 key international, with two layouts: US and US International. Hi, I emerged eselect-oodict and it acts like it's doing something but still I don't see any dictionaries in Tools-Options-Language Settings-Writing Aids Under Languages I have selected English (USA) Is there something else I have to turn on to get spell checking working for my wife? I restarted it this morning, but didn't get to stay and watch... and I'll be out of town all weekend. Maybe next week I'll have time to see if it's willing to cooperate... same general error message as OP, but different place in the build. First off, as far as I can remember, compiling OO from source and installing the binary version is not exactly the same. The source one install OO from go-oo.org while the binary package is the normal Sun OO. Another reason is that OO is reputed for having a very complicated build system that takes up a lot of resources to complete. Depending on the hardware you are doing this on using a binary package that most likely doesn't fit into your otherwise self-compiled system may not be that idiotic. Regards Dirk

Hello everyone, I guess you all missunderestimated the alert about Random Access Memory. I had the same problem, I could not compile openoffice. I just had the same warning message and the merge stopped. I only had 512 of RAM from which 128 are used by my graphic card, and with the system running it wasn't enough RAM room for Ooo to compile (at least 256 MB ?!). ANyway I bought myself a 1GB RAM card and that's it, I could emerge openoffice and, yesterday, I have successfully compiled it in like 4 hours hehe ! It may take 6 or 7 hours to compile OOo on my rig but everything on my system is compiled as far as I know. Also, isn't whether a person uses a binary or not up the the person in the chair? Why is it that every time someone comes here to get help with OOo that a comment is made to install the binary? That is not exactly a fix for the problem. I have read about problems with the binary version too and the compiled version will work fine. Let the person that owns the puter make up their own mind. It's not our place to tell them what packages to install unless they ask. Dale :-) :-)

The result: a clean compile, as near as I can tell, but useless. Now it quits silently a second or so into any startup, with or without a filename on the command line. No message on the terminal where I start it, and no clue I can see about what's wrong. I'm back to MSOffice. I hate it but it works. Have you not tried Openoffice-bin?

Hi I have am new to Gentoo. My previous experience is with slackware . I Downloaded the Live CD and installed Gentoo twice .. but the problem is Grub is not installed. I have a dual boot with Widowz and Grub for dos ... So I tried it using the grub console root (hd0,4) kernel (hd0,4)/ -- and when I tab here I cant list the content. So I used the live CD and chrooted to the installed environment . there I realized that I don't have any files for my hdd in the /dev/ folder ... Is this the issue... Please advise me . I haven't tried a lot of things, but this little RTF file gets it wedged right away: the console that started it says: error - missing word count in dictionary file Hash Manager Error : 4 So I'm guessing there's a problem in a spell checker. Where would I look to solve that? http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=242020 You need to emerge --sync again (there's an update to the ebuild, but no version increment IIRC) and rebuild openoffice.

But i am not 100% sure about that ... After upgraded to version 3, I installed the portuguese dictionary by openoffice extension (downloaded from openoffice extension site). So, I dont use myspell dictionaries anymore and unmerge it. -- Markos Chandras

[gentoo-user] openoffice 3.0 problem
Yesterday I saw that openoffice 3.0 was unmasked for amd64 so I built and installed it. It seemed to work fine on a couple test documents that I opened, but then I ran into a problem with the one which has my household expense spreadsheets. I opened it and the data on one of the sheets was there for sure, but there was no tab bar for moving between the sheets. I saved a copy of that spreadsheet into a new file to see if a natively-stored file will have the same problem. It did. I looked to see if there was an option to turn on the sheet tab bar, but I didn't find any. So I rebuilt 2.4.1 and tested it on the spreadsheed which I saved with OOo 3.0. It also didn't show the tab bar at the bottom! When I opened my original with 2.4.1, though, it appears fine. The Open Office seems to run ok, but at start-up, I get the following message: javaldx: Could not find a Java Runtime Environment! I tried putting JRE in my PATH, just in case, but that didn't seem to help... Anyone know a resolution to this?

I tried to recompile OOo, and it pulled in 8 or so packages that OOo-bin hadn't. Unfortunately, the compile eventually failed. I'm running python-updater now. I hadn't used it for a month or so. Perhaps it got resentful. Anyway, recent attempts to start any flavor of OpenOffice have failed early. It does ask about plugins, and whether it shour restore my session, but shortly after that it simply dies. There's no dialog box, and nothing obvious in the log files. Somehow I think I'm missing something: As it seems, app-office/ooqstart-gnome and app-office/oooqs are going away real soon and there is supposed to be a quicklauncher which is emerged with app-office/openoffice. So far, so good, but I'm unable to find it! There is /usr/lib64/openoffice/share/xdg/qstart.desktop which includes the command ooffice -quickstart -nologo -nodefault but that doesn't work (starts a process which detaches from the console but doesn't do anything useful). man ooffice says that the option -quickstart is gone since 2.0.0 So, where is this quicklauncher? [gentoo-user] openoffice only works as root
After my last emerge -auvND world, openoffice stopped working
for non-root users. When I run
strace /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice -writer
I observe that the program hangs doing a waitpid() call on a
child that was forked to run /usr/lib/openoffice/program/oosplash.bin,
and oosplash.bin is hung waiting on this call:
connect(3, {sa_family=AF_FILE,
path=/tmp/OSL_PIPE_1000_SingleOfficeIPC_353b22f3f3e79662742f7b9c3463e52}, 110
If I run oospalsh.bin from the command line, the same thing
happens, it hangs trying to connect to a Unix domain socket.
I've checked, and the socket does exist:

the mount options you use?
