Here here! Some things were broken in Jaws 17. I had Jaws 16 at work for a long time and it served me well. Re: [JAWS-Users] Downgrading to JAWS 16
I don't need JAWS for work, when I lost my vision, I had so few working years left, that I decided to just retire early. But when I sit down in front of my computer, regardless of what I'm doing; emailing, surfing the web, playing game, online shopping or banking, the last thing I want or need is to have to fight with a program that refuses to work properly. So arfter a year and a half of fighting with JAWWS 17 and 18, I finally gave up and went back to JAWS16. If I had discovered the Outlook Express that is usable on Windows 7 before I started using Thunderbird, I'd probably be using it now. Later... If a newer version would give you better productivity, by all means upgrade it if you can. In my case, if I want to use Windows 7, I have to use the later JAWS version. But after several attempts to fully upgrade, I only use that system as a backup. Conversely, if you find that a piece of software isn't helping you, and you're spending time trying to force it to perform its function, it's best to go to an earlier version or try another program. Hi! From what some have said about some web sites being harder to navigate with older versions of JAWS, I have decided not to uninstall JAWS 18, it just won't be my primary screen reader. I also have NVDA installed for those few programs, mostly games written with BGT, that don't play well with any version of JAWS. There are also parts of some web sites that don't work right with JAWS, for those too I'll switch to NVDA. I don't like NVDA as much as I like JAWS, but it does get me around those few things that JAWS won't do. Later... Re: [JAWS-Users] Downgrading to JAWS 16
I am so envious. I tried so hard to keep Office 2003, but Word was somewhat corrupted and I had to really play around with it to get it to work properly part of the time. And then Outlook began producing multiple copies of emails. I had a patch that was supposed to take care of such problems, but it stopped. And I was using magic at a very high magnification. My old Magic wouldn't work with newer versions of Jaws like 16 and the new version of Magic wouldn't work with Office 2003. So then someone installed new everything for me. Jaws 18 seems to be a bit better after yesterday's upgrade. At least I hope it is. But there are certain kinds of html emails that Jaws did fine with in Outlook 2003, and that, even with all kinds of work arounds, it's difficult to deal with, with Jaws in later versions of Office. I retired 10 years ago. Otherwise, I'd be tearing my hair out! Miriam -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of John M. Hi, It depends on what Windows 10 release one is using. The latest builds of 17 and 18 will work reasonably well with Windows 10 Version 1703 (Creators Update), although for some, audio ducking in JAWS 18 is somewhat broken when using latest Windows 10 release. Re: [JAWS-Users] Downgrading to JAWS 16
Gene and John, you have given me some very useful information and I thank You both. I wonder if Jaws 17 and 18 work better with Windows 10, but I am still using Win 7 and am happy with it. No plans to upgrade until I have to, and while considering upgrading my Jaws perhaps in the near future, you have both convinced me to go with 16. By the way, I also have a Win7, 64-bit system, along with Office 2010. As John says, no need to upgrade for the sake of it. Re: [JAWS-Users] Downgrading to JAWS 16
I think that perhaps the latest upgrade of 18 may have fixed the issue I kept having, which was that Jaws periodically disappeared when I changed from one window to the next. I may be wrong. I only did the upgrade yesterday. But it's really expensive to stop paying for those SMA's. The one for personal use averages out to be $60 a year. Even if you don't use it, $60 a year is like an insurance plan in case you need a later version. If you stop paying for them and then need a new version, it will cost a lot more money. Re: [JAWS-Users] downgrading back to xp
Hi. Adding more ram does definitely increase performance, but after a certain point it stops making a noticeable difference. In this case the real bottleneck is the cpu. A fast processor running on 2gb of ram would run windows 7 just fine, I'd know, have done it. I've also upgraded from 1 gb to 2 gb in my own netbook, and that helped, but even going from such a small amount to double that didn't make it fast. With a netbook like that, 2gb is the perfect amount, anything more than that is a bit of a waste. Ram memory serves the purpose of holding onto data that the processor needs to deal with. A fast processor will chew through 2 gb of ram quicker and keep it from being filled up as much, but adding more ram will give the capacity to hold onto more data at once for the processor. But just because you can put more people in line doesn't necessarily mean you can take care of more people at once, after a certain point. Additionally, if you don't have enough ram, the OS will be able to figure out what data is being used the least amount, and store that in a special place on the hard disk. While that data will be accessed much more slowly from a hard disk, it is little used data and generally you won't experience serious reductions of performance just because you're forced to store running data on the disk. The OS will adapt to what capacity it has within reason, 2gb is enough for basic computing because it gives you just enough room to keep frequently used data in the ram. That having been said though, upgrading your ram certainly doesn't hurt, but it's hardly worth paying for more ram to put in a computer like the one being discussed here, for about twice the cost of the new ram, provided the netbook can support it (mine can't), you could buy a whole new tablet computer that will run windows 10 and absolutely spank the socks off the netbook and do it with a lot better battery life too. Granted, if you want a transformer that pretends to be a laptop like I mentioned before, it's going to cost more than twice the cost of new ram, but my point still stands. In the case of this netbook, the most logical free solution is try to clean up the software. Maybe there is a memory leak, this user is running too much software, one or more applications are conflicting, etc. Win7 can run decently well on these but they can't run win7 all that well on top of dealing with some software or other that is eating too much cpu. If the cpu is overheating and clocking down (compressed air would probably fix this). I'd like to know if this user has specific areas where performance is more a problem than others. Is it really bad in skype but halfway acceptable most everywhere else? things like that. Also the old atom processors can be manually clocked, you can force them to run at around 800 mhz and, while I have actually gotten windows 7 to run at 430 mhz on my asus netbook by purposefully underclocking it, that doesn't yield itself to being a very good performer, rofl. There is a chance this user is using the power saver power plan, or even perhaps the balanced plan would be causing issues. Maybe putting the power plan to high performance would help. Re: [JAWS-Users] downgrading back to xp
Hi. You might try upgrading to windows 8.1 or windows 10, they are slightly more efficient in general, in some places they will be more sluggish yet, but on the whole 8.1 and 10 take less system resources to run just the OS. You could downgrade to xp by using an xp install disk and a windows xp activation code which may be written on a sticker on the bottom of the computer in print, of course. However, if xp is half as unsecure as they claim it is I think you'd be better off granting that it's a tad old and that it'll be a bit slow and just be patient. That said, 7 itself is also pretty efficient should not run worse than xp does. What are the simtims, what have you tried to do to fix it, have you googled things like speed up my windows 7 computer? Don't install a random piece of software that might come up in such search results that claims to speed things up and generally brew your coffee just right, you want a how to tutorial that'll tell you what steps to take, things like turning off certain services, making sure the hard disk is not fragmented, clearing prefetch, turning off unneeded startup entries, clearing temporary files and so on. It won't win any races but you should be quite able to do most tasks with windows 7, 8.1 or 10 with a few granules of patience. I'd know, I've been there, I've got an Asus netbook running win10 sitting right beside me in fact, doesn't run it very good actually, but it's an old version from before windows 10 was actually released. But I had 8.1 installed before that, and 7 before that, and xp still before that, and I did just fine with both 7 and 8.1. I'm fully prepared to assume that the slowness it has now is do to prerelease software. If you think you might like to just buy a new computer and you don't have lots of money to spend on it, try a nextbook 10 make sure it is the windows version, from walmart. It's a tablet that comes with a keyboard dock, the tablet sits down on the hinge and works just like a normal netbook, but it does have a touch screen and you can pull the screen up off the dock and use it like a tablet. The biggest downside to this may be limited connectivity options no full sized USB port, and not very much storage though it does have an sd card reader. That's a 175 dollar computer with what sounds like similar specs to what your netbook likely has, but they do tend to run pretty well, newer and more efficient hardware in there. If you have 375 dollars you can pick up an Asus t100 which is just like the nextbook save that if you buy online, there is a couple of versions of the t100 that include 500 gb hard drives in the keyboard dock. So for 375 dollars you get a 1.86 or 2.1ghz quad core atom processor, 2 gb of ram, 32 or 64 gb of solid state storage included in the tablet, an sd card reader on the tablet, charges via standard micro USB, and the dock gives you an additional 500 gb of storage and one full sized USB 3 port. I have and rather like one of these. Just some things to think about. If you can't seem to get the netbook to run modern windows at a pace that suits you, it might be wiser to try and upgrade to a new machine rather than downgrade to older and less secure software, especially if you like any of the modern functionality of later versions of windows. Just for a lark though, if you're completely fed up with windows 7, try upgrading it to windows 10 while that's free, it might just run better if not just about as well. Re: [JAWS-Users] downgrading back to xp
Wow, that was really interesting and informative. Actually, other than office 2010, Thunderbird, IE11 and my magic jack device there's not much else running that I can think of at this time. Thanks again for the explanation. On 10/30/2015 3:50 AM, valiant8086 wrote: Hi. I would first go to ms config and see what is in your startup list, the more checked the longer to startup and can run sluggish.
