Re: [JAWS-Users] Strange occurrence turning on the computer
It's been 5 years sinc I purchsed a computer, but I remember finding Norton stored on my coputer. Even though it ws not being used, the fac that the program was even installed was causing unexpected behaviors for my computer. I had to get hep working with the registry and changing permissions with registry keys to make things work properly. As I have said in my other posts, be very carefuly when playing with your registry. You thik you have problems now, your computer may turn into a complete disaster if the wrong move is made--perhaps even needing to reinstall Windows. Good luck. -Original Message- From: cheez Sent: Saturday, September 23, 2017 10:32 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Strange occurrence turning on the computer Thanks, Steve for your suggestions. Re: [JAWS-Users] Strange occurrence turning on the computer
Hi. I tend to agree. I've made a decision myself to stay away from HP from now on. I might go back on that if I see some really well built machine some time in my future but if the two HP's I have right now are any indication they appear to be making painstaking effort to introduce failure points in order to keep people needing to buy new models. Just my own opinion, but I've worn out hinges on two completely different hp models and I'm about tired of that bs. Now I'm trying out these transformmer 2 in 1 models that have the screen can flip all the way around backwards upside down against the bottom of the computer so you can turn it over and have screen up, keyboard down and use it like a big tablet. I'm not particularly concerned about using it like a tablet but I think this capability necessitates tougher hinges and I'm rather interested to put that to the test. So far so good my Lenovo Yoga 2 pro's hinges are holding up decenntly. They're a little more wobbly than they were when I first bought it, but there are no cracks, which was what went wrong with both of my HP's. Those HP's are both aluminum machines, and their hinges are made out of plastic. Now ask me why I think they intentionally made a failure point. I mean, come on, plastic hinge housings on an otherwise all aluminum computer! Oh, sure, metal parts inside, but they pull on the plastic that houses them every time you move the lid a bit, so when the plastic breaks, the metal doesn't have anything to hold to. In any event, one of my first reassurances now when computer shopping has to do with the hinge build quality. The ones that go all the way across like tosheba likes to do, and mac laptops, is nice though a friend on this list has one made that way and it's cracked. Thecold metal ones like the flip odels have is nice too, and I suspect the so called watchband hinge lenovo yoga 900 and yoga 910 have is excellent. Cheers: Aaron Spears, A.K.A. valiant8086. I disagree. There is alot that goes on in the bios and this is specific to each brand. also choices in hardware can make a big difference in how well a system works. Otherwise you would just buy the cheapest one you could find and it would be fine. I have owned Quantex, Gateway,Dell, HP, Asus, Sony, Lanovo, Alienware and built PCs with Asus, Gigabyte, Azroc, Foxcon, MSI, Micro and others I cant remember. They all had quirks and benifits to each. Never liked HP. On 9/22/2017 11:36 AM, Steve wrote: It really has nothing to do with the manufacturer of a laptop. Re: [JAWS-Users] Strange occurrence turning on the computer
In msconfig under the boot tab is the option to remove any other OS's if any from the boot manager. The timeout wont allow anything less than 3 seconds.. On 9/22/2017 8:05 AM, Valiant8086 wrote: Hi. If you're interested in throwing money at a problem like this, a solid state disk is the answer. Other than that, just getting the boot process to be more efficient is the key, but the challenge is knowing just what is being inefficient about it. Some computers have a boot selection menu that appears if the system has some sort of or has in the past had some sort of dual boot capability. If this appears it'll wait for a good 30 seconds or so for you to pick the OS you want to start before it starts up the default one, and this problem can be present even if it is no longer dual boot capable. If this is the issue, you can fix it either by removing the extra OS (don't know how to do that on the top of my head), or go to run and type msconfig. On the boot tab of the resulting screen, set the timeout to 5. I wouldn't recommend setting it lower than 2 because it might make it impossible to do certain recovery actions before the boot process starts, and that's not desirable. So the idea here is to get the screen to come up just long enough to be able to tap the right button or what have you, but not long enough to lag the boot process moere than a few seconds. Be careful in msconfig, there are plenty of intricate and interesting ways to break things in there. Don't change anything you're not positive you understand. There are also some nice sites online that list and describe all common processes, which should help you decide which ones you can get rid of to help speed up your machine. But like Tom said, you don't want to go in there cancelling processes if you don't know what they are. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Tom Fairhurst Sent: September 22, 2017 9:56 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Strange occurrence turning on the computer My computer had been starting slowly for a long time. The lady who helped me with Office 365 also helped me to speed up my computer at startup by disabling a number of programs in msconfig. I don't recommend looking at this lightly because doing so without knowing what you are doing could keep your computer from starting properly. once I understood what she was doing, things indeed went much faster, even though I put back a few programs I wanted. Re: [JAWS-Users] Strange occurrence turning on the computer
Hi. Hi, I hear this sometimes when starting my machine and I just guessed it was something to do with the sign in page of windows. Do you have to put in a password? I do and it is on this window I sometimes get this message. I don't think it is anything to worry about. I think one of two things. 1. You got a Windows update, and it was quickly finishing up the update installation process, and JAWS had enough time to launch itself in the secure desktop environment prior to the point where the update finished and you were either put on the log in screen or logged in. 2. For some reason JAWS managed to launch itself once in some other desktop environment before it ended what ever it was doing. This is related to 1 actually. You'll sometimes hear a screen reader start itself while a system is shutting down too, this can occur if it spends enough time on the secure desktop environment after your account is logged off before it actually shuts down. This doesn't hurt anything aside from that it can cause the system to take a little longer to do what ever it's supposed to be doing. Re: [JAWS-Users] Strange occurrence turning on the computer
Sounds like your computer might be going to "sleep" rather than shutting down properly. Although I don't hear JAWS announce the name of the overlay window (if you do a window list keystroke command with shift-f10 you will find this), I do experience similar things from time to time. I don't think it's anything to worry about. Maybe try doing an actual restart (as in, using the restart option in the shutdown menu). This will ensure that anything that's gone off is reset, and any updates awaiting will be properly installed. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Laura Richardson Sent: September 19, 2017 6:50 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Strange occurrence turning on the computer Hello, Jaws 18 and Windows 10 ..
