Re: [lace] Photos of my lace stand
Hi Agnes! I am so impressed with your pillow stand! It is certainly travel-friendly and the custom platform can be tucked into the same bag as the lace pillow! I do have one question. It looks like you have put the grip for adjusting the head to be protruding under the pillow directly toward the lacemaker. Does it get in the way? Or would it have been harder to find had it been on one side or the other under the pillow. Just curious!! I would be very interested in your printed instructions! Thanks for sharing. Re: [lace] Photos from OIDFA Adelaide Congress
Dear Jean and David, Thank you! Who did the photography? Did everyone notice on the Lace Wine swan label by Lauran Sundin that the gold wire, purple thread, and pearls contains her initials, and that it is finished as a necklace? Maybe her students at Waddesdon Manor in September will see it. The architectural and lacy ironwork are fabulous, beautifully framed with tree branches, structural elements, etc. The black swan is fantastic. Viewing these photos reminded me of Our Lacemakers of Maine handout for demonstrations. It is a folded-in-half sheet of paper, that opens like a book. On the front is our logo by Lori Howe (Lacefairy) and an April 29, 1939 quote I found from Coco Chanel: I consider lace to be one of the prettiest imitations ever made of the fantasy of nature; lace always evokes for me those incomparable designs which the branches and leaves of trees embroider across the sky, and I do not think that any invention of the human spirit could have a more graceful or precise origin. Jean and David, the photos of Adelaide you have put on the OIDFA site are superb. Thanks for all you both do for Lace. Clay and I are trying to find a work around / secondary password to allow people outside the United States to upload their own photos. We need a computer literate person outside the USA to help test this, please! Meanwhile the easiest approach is for me to upload them for you. Send me a private email with: the photos title of the lace (if there is one) a description of the lace tags (e.g. Needle Lace, Honiton, Binche etc.) what set you wish the photos to be put in I do not find Flickr to be intuitive to use (other than for simply viewing the photos), and it keeps changing it's layout, and where you find out how to edit info and sets. So adding all the info when uploading is much the easiest And for Janet Theaker, who doesn't seem to get my messages directly: I guess you are not receiving my emails as you have not replied to any of my earlier messages offering to upload your photo. It is much easier for me if I get all the information at once. Please let me have that, and I will then upload it. Re: [lace] Photos from Fliker
Mary, This is not a download coming from Arachne. It's a service provided by hotmail. Many web-based mail services now have a feature where they include thumbnails of links that are in the message. Because the Arachne footer includes a Flickr link, hotmail adds thumbnails of the photostream. No one is actually sending the photos to you and they do not add to your download limit. Gmail does the same thing with Flickr links. Hope this clears things up! Re: [lace] Photos of Reticella Lace
It's certainly hand made, but I agree that it doesn't look to be 17th century. There was a revival of 'Reticella' in the 19th century promoted by the art critic John Ruskin (friend/associate of the pre-Raphaelite painters). This 'Reticella' s known as Ruskin lace work. I printed a Lace-RXP Tønder pattern recently on deep pink card, and found that the contrast between it, the gimp lines and the white thread (Egyptian cotton 140/2) was much better than when using white card covered in blue plastic. I work at a band uniform company that deals with fabric, threads and tailoring. Yes I do make use of odds and ends that I collect either for tatting or bobbinlace. My wife and I also make costumes every year for the HS musicals. So often go dumpster diving for fabric! During B.C.(Before Computers) the tailors would use this waxed coated orange, stiff card to draft the garment patterns onto. It was used millions of times to trace out patterns on the material before cutting. Now that we do everything by computer, I did manage to get my lacing fingers on one of these huge sheets of 1.5mm thick card stock. I use it mainly for my Honiton lace or if I know a lace project will be used constantly. Of course I have to preprick(I rarely do otherwise) with the appropriate size pricker/pin. Can't find any more of these sheets here at the factory. The patterns from ages ago are still used here for special creations. But I am sure there is some secret stash.;) Don't know the actual name of the thick card stock, other than tailoring card stock. -- Mark, aka Tatman website: http://www.tat-man.net blog: http://tat-man.net/blog Magic Thread Shop: http://www.tat-man.net/tatterville/tatshop/tatshop.html email: tat...@tat-man.net Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/tatmantats - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Have to chime in here. That photographer is LAZY and can't be bothered to get the attribution. There's really no excuse in this age of digital photography when we no longer pay for every frame we shoot. All he has to do is take a clear photo of a tag or business card or label. A couple years ago I photographed Anna, a Polish lacemaker, at an international arts crafts fair in Jerusalem (she photographed me, too; I just found my picture in one of her albums). http://www.flickr.com/photos/spindexr/2783769732/ I also photographed her business card among her laces and was able to put her name on the description of the photo. Eventually she found the photo and wrote to me about herself via my Flickr account. Then a few months ago she found me on Facebook and friended me. If he were really interested in lace, you'd think he would make an effort to document his photos. My plan with him is that every time I see him post a new photo, I'm going to ask who made it and designed it. Eventually it may get through to him that he needs to record that information. I have not written to flickr to make a formal complaint, because, frankly I do want to see his pictures. He allows me to see laces I would never know about otherwise. Alix, Your laces are beautiful. Can you tell us about the lace techniques/types they are? I am especially interested in #s 1, 3, 6, 7. Clay, I love your pieces. I particularly like the Winterfairy - what appeals is the way it breaks out of the frame with the tree and the path. Really beautiful. Thank you for sharing them with us. Thanks, Lesley! I love the Winterfairy too - for the same reasons you mentioned! Anny is a great designer, and her pieces are a lot of fun to work. Re: [lace] photos of cards from the exchange
A funny sidelight: Yesterday I wrote private email to Bev and ended with the fact that I'm just a short drive south. Well, that's partially true, but as Bev tactfully pointed out to me, the trip between our homes must also include a ferry ride! Blub, blub! ;-) This entitled Bev to make a small, and unimportant mistake, but since I love Snoqualmie (my adopted home of less than four years) so much, I will make the correction that I am not in Snohomish (also a nice place, considerably north and west of here). Barbara Hi again Barbara in Snohomish WA has offered to host pictures of the lace cards we are sending - this is great, and if you want to have your lace posted, you can send jpgs to her or me (and I'll pass them along). *I want to emphasize this is entirely optional, and not part of the exchange itself. * bye for now Bev in Sooke BC (on Vancouver Island, west coast of Canada) Cdn. floral bobbins www.woodhavenbobbins.com - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Snohomish? Snoqualmie? Are these names of Indian tribes, or what? Re: [lace] photos of cards from the exchange
Yes, exactly. We have many Native American tribes in this area, and many cities are named after them. Enumclaw, Puyallup, etc. Say EE-num-claw and Pew-AL-up (that's pew as in a church, and Al, like the nickname for Allan). It's a challenge for newcomers, but we natives take it all in stride! Re: [lace] photos of cards from the exchange
It is SO refreshing to hear the Native names, and pronounced (hopefully) as they once were. In Virginia, we have the Monacan, Seminole, Shenandoah, Rappahanock, Chincoteague, Assateague, and Puncateague, to name a few, and except for the first two, either towns or regions have been named for them. Our local Native American descendants are very active and have Pow-Wows annually to keep their traditions alive. And to keep this lace related... One of the first bits of old lace I ever saw was a bit of Sprang (if I'm not mistaken), made by Indians in the Southwest in the mid 1800's. RE: [lace] Photos on Webshots
Thank you Ilske! I put a couple of samples of my Ipswich Lace up. I have a few more photos to add, but I wanted to see how this worked. http://community.webshots.com/album/248498829kltBZL === Hi Diane, Looking at your samples, which are lovely, made me think that you could conceivably include them in the definition of Foral Torchon. I really like the half stitch motifs, so reminiscent of Chantilly. I will have to dig out my Ipswich boot and take a closer look. Well done, lacing and posting to Webshots.
