OK, It is working for me. The reference includes a page number instead of xxx. It is the Descendant Narrative you were using right? Re: [LegacyUG] Notes
The swap difficulty with notes is no longer as problem in Legacy 8. There is still a difficulty transferring between a regular and a vital event however. The Vital Events have no Description field. To work around this in Legacy 8 any Description from the regular event is transferred to the Vital Event Notes as the first line (existing event notes are appended after this line). If there is any possibility you may want to switch back do not remove that first line of the vital event notes. If you later switch the vital event with a regular event the description will be replaced in the regular event with the contents of that first line. In Legacy 7 my testing showed that the notes transfer correctly to the vital event. It is notes from the vital event that got cut off when they were transferred to a regular event. This is the opposite of what you imply in your message. Legacy 7 will not be fixed. Brian Customer Support Millennia Corporation br...@legacyfamilytree.com http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com On 28 Jan 2014 3:44 PM, Brian L. Lightfoot wrote: I agree with your suggestion about the use of the Notes fields and I tend to use them quite a bit. However, there is an obscure bug in their use that could present a minefield of disaster unless the user knows about this. This obscure bug involves the use of “Alt.Event†events such as “Alt.Birth†or “Alt.Deathâ€. For example, whenever I come across such a bit of data that presents an alternate date of birth, I create such an Alt.Birth event and then I use the Notes tab of that alternate event to add my notes or a description of why this date may differ from the main Birth event and other explanations. In a few cases, I’ve had a long text note that came via email and it was copied and pasted into the Notes tab of the alternate event. Now, here is where the bug occurs. Imagine that as one’s research continues, you confirm that the alternate event has the correct data but you’d still like to keep the other event just for continued research reasons. Legacy makes it easy for you to just select the Alternate Event, then click on Options, and then select “Swap with Event Informationâ€. Beware! If you have more than 255 characters in your Alternate Event Notes tab, and you swap the events, you will lose all your notes beyond the first 255 characters. In other words, the transfer of text is limited to only 255 characters. If you can remember this bombshell, I’d suggest you first copy the lengthy notes to the General Notes area, complete the Swap, and then copy the lengthy notes back to where they got cut off. I don’t know if this bug still exists in v8 but it was still there in the last v7. Will it ever get fixed? Maybe, but I’m not holding my breath because there seems to be an infestation of other bugs in v8 that are more pressing than this minor issue. RE: [LegacyUG] Name Search
Hi Susan, I missed your original post. It sound like you have already created a Search List by some method - and are then searching *that* list, as this is the only way I can find the 'search key at the bottom of the page'. The names will/should show up, as Jenny describes below, *if* they are in the list. When you go to the Search button at the bottom of the page and click on 'Show Name List' you are taken back to the name list of your entire file, not just the Search List. If the name you are seeking has not been included in the Search List then, of course, it will not show up - clicking on 'Name List' takes you to your entire file where it does show up. It is a field to tell Legacy to make changes on a particular tag number. The actual scope and what changes to be made are in other parts of the screen. Re: [LegacyUG] Notes
Since Legacy 8 does not lose any user data I do not know why you think there are more changes needed. The only way data would be lost in Legacy 8 would be if the user edits the vital event notes to remove the Event Description: text of the description line(s) from those notes and then it would be their removal of that text not Legacy which deletes the data. Actually the date given is 8 April 2014. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/end-support-help The windows site says As a result, after April 8, 2014, technical assistance for Windows XP will no longer be available, including automatic updates that help protect your PC. Microsoft will also stop providing _Microsoft Security Essentials_ (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download) for download on Windows XP on this date. (If you already have Microsoft Security Essentials installed, you will continue to receive anti-malware signature updates for a limited time, but this does not mean that your PC will be secure because Microsoft will no longer be providing security updates to protect your PC.) On the youtube page someone said the support will go to 2015 but I haven't found anything on the Windows site to agree with that. Am I looking in the wrong place? RE: [LegacyUG] End of Days - Windows XP - 14 April
Since this is off topic, I’m replying privately. “Support” is a term that means different things to different people. Extended support for all of the Windows XP versions ends April 8,2014. Support for the Service packs has already ended. What is extended through July 14, 2015 is Antimalware support for XP. For consumers, that applies to Microsoft Security Essentials. But, patches will not be issued after April 8. 2014 for XP. So, if you have Security Essentials, you will be able to detect and maybe block certain malware on XP machines, but the underlying vulnerability will not be patched, and the malware could infect the system after that detection. It’s meant to give a little more time to finish the migration to Win7 or Win8. But, it will not make XP secure. XP is not very secure when it’s fully patched, after April 8, it will be even less so. Win 7 is secure and not as much of a radical change as Win8 is. All of my programs worked first time. Secure and stable, I have no reservations recommending the upgrade to Win 7. My only advice would be to forget everything that you learned with XP. Learn the way that Windows 7 wants you to work. If you do that, you won’t get frustrated and within a few hours, you’ll be so comfortable that you’ll wonder what the fuss was about! grin I’ve given that advice for a couple of years and people still thank me. RE: [LegacyUG] Name Search
Many thanks Jenny and Bob, Hadn't realised that I was not using the Name List which has 10695 people. The Search List only has 1565. In L7.5 and all previous versions I had used the Name List to find anyone I was looking for, never the Search List so I am not quite sure why there are the 2 lists. Yes I enter names as Jenny says. Still working my way around many of the features in L8. Thanks again Susan I missed your original post. Bob A On 30/01/2014 02:11, Susan Jones wrote: I am having a problem using the Name Search option. Using L8 latest update. If I enter surname then 2 or more Christian names, they do not appear. I then need to use the search key at the bottom of the page. If was not a problem previously. Am I missing something? Do you mean finding someone in the name list? If so, as soon as you type the first letter of the surname the focus should jump to the first person in the list whose surname begins with that letter. As you continue to type, the focus moves down to the first matching name again. When you've typed the full name you need to type a comma, a space, then start on the forename. Again, the cursor should keep jumping down the list . Is this not happening for you? It works fine for me. Only 3 tags are available with the free version. So if they are all being used then you will have to free one of them up to use it. Re: [LegacyUG] v7.5 - how can I send info to someone by email?
I was going to suggest that you send them a report from your data but since you are using the free version you cannot create a PDF report. You could create the report as an RTF or Text and send them that file. The format of RTF and text files is not nearly as pretty as the PDF preview but the free version of Legacy does not allow creation of PDF files. RE: [LegacyUG] v7.5 - how can I send info to someone by email?
Send them a PDF version of a report that includes the portion of the tree you want. You may want to run the report in .rtf format first to edit any stray information – then print to PDF and email that. Re: [LegacyUG] v7.5 - how can I send info to someone by email?
Hi Elizabeth, There are many ways to share your information with another person, which one is right for you is your choice. :-) My preferred way to share information is two-fold: (1) a descendants' chart containing everyone in my tree, starting from the furthest-back ancestor we have in common and editing out all but first/known name and surname for living people (ie no middle names or birth dates). My first step is to generate the chart as a text file, and then make a copy to edit (so I can always return to the original if I mess it up). I may attach that edited .txt file containing the chart to an email, or I may copy the text into the body of the email, depending on the situation at the time. (2) a descendants' book report for everyone in the chart who marked as deceased, including sources, pictures, etc. I generate a PDF file and attach it to the email. What I don't do is just hand over a copy of my Legacy file (.fdb) or a GEDCOM file for the other person to import into their database. It's too easy to not think about what you're putting in your file that way, in my opinion. My way, if they want my information they at least have to put a little work into copying it (which is fine with me) and they can't help but consider each piece of information as they type it. If it's not as simple as navigating back to a common ancestor, you could make a copy of your database, and separate out the people you want to include from those you don't. Unlink the wanted people from the branches you don't want to share. Then use Tree Finder (in the View menu) to tag all the trees except the one you want to keep and delete them. Now you have a file containing only those people you want to share, and can run reports or export data without worrying about including someone you didn't mean to. If you want more detail on any of this, please don't hesitate to post to the list again and ask. Happy to help, but don't want to flood you with too much information all at once. Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy elizabeth said the following on 31/01/2014 7:54 a.m.: Can anyone tell me how to make a copy of some of my family tree and send it to another person by email? Re: [LegacyUG] End of Days - Windows XP - 14 April
Hey Listers, As we all know, but may forget, Legacy depends on an operating system. Legacy requires MS Windows is some form or other. With many PC users still using Windows XP, this warning is not out of place, off topic. It may save someone's Legacy files from damage. The URL, I gave, will help raise security levels, not only for XP, but for the newer, slower, costly Windows versions. No operating system is totally secure. The road on which our operating systems lead, our programs. Legacy included, have to follow. Use caution. JimS On 01/30/2014 02:48 PM, Don Hanson wrote: Since this is off topic, I’m replying privately. “Support†is a term that means different things to different people. Is this not happening to anyone else? Mary Young On 30 January 2014 22:30, R G Strong-genes rgstrongge...@gmail.com wrote: Mary, I guess I should have read the subject line. RE: [LegacyUG] End of Days - Windows XP - 14 April
I disagree … I think it is relevant to this list … it is something that WILL affect many Legacy users, and many of them may not be aware of it. Since when it is the responsibility of a software developer to remind folks that an OS will no longer be supported by the OS developer. These comments belong on a computer user forum, not the LUG. Re: [LegacyUG] Customise - 7.4 Source Clipboard - Prompt for Detail
Mary: I think here is the trick you need to do: 1. go to Options, Settings, 7.4 -- set Default to OFF 2. At bottom of page, click on Options for Default Settings I think you will need to click Options 3, 4, 5 which does: 3) Save all settings as user defaults 4) Save current Global settings as User Defaults 5) Save current Family file settings as User Defaults then Save out of Customize Legacy It may be enough to just do options 4 5 above. Try that and see what happens. It works for me. ___ Leon Chapman chap...@gmail.com - On Thu, Jan 30, 2014 at 7:55 PM, R G Strong-genes rgstrongge...@gmail.comwrote: Mary, Are you doing this procedure from the Master Source list or are you doing it from an individuals source list? *From:* Mary Young m...@cmy.org.uk *Sent:* Thursday, January 30, 2014 9:38 PM *To:* legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com *Subject:* Re: [LegacyUG] Customise - 7.4 Source Clipboard - Prompt for Detail Thanks, yes, option 7.4 is already set at off.
