[NTG-context] Migrating ConTeXt's Textadept settings from v9 to v10.
Hi Hans, I'd surely love help you to adapt ConTeXt's settings from v9 to v10. I hope that the following quotations will help you enough. I also hope that the format doesn't get mixed up when I send this mail. - QUOTATION start source: https://foicica.com/textadept/manual.html#Migration.Guides Migration Guides Textadept 9 to 10 API Changes Old API Change New API *_G* bit32 Removed N/A *(use bitwise operators)* *buffer* brace_match(pos) Changed brace_match <https://foicica.com/textadept/api.html#buffer.brace_match>(pos, 0) *lexer* _foldsymbols Replaced add_fold_point() <https://foicica.com/textadept/api.html#lexer.add_fold_point> _rules Replaced add_rule() <https://foicica.com/textadept/api.html#lexer.add_rule> _tokenstyles Replaced add_style() <https://foicica.com/textadept/api.html#lexer.add_style> embed_lexer(parent, child, …) Renamed parent:embed <https://foicica.com/textadept/api.html#lexer.embed>(child, …) _RULES[id] Replaced get_rule <https://foicica.com/textadept/api.html#lexer.get_rule>(id) _RULES[id] = rule Replaced modify_rule <https://foicica.com/textadept/api.html#lexer.modify_rule>(id, rule) N/A Added new() <https://foicica.com/textadept/api.html#lexer.new> word_match(list, wchars, icase) Changed word_match <https://foicica.com/textadept/api.html#lexer.word_match>(words, icase) *ui* set_theme Renamed buffer.set_theme() <https://foicica.com/textadept/api.html#buffer.set_theme> *textadept.editing* match_brace Replaced N/A *(menu function)* N/A Added paste() <https://foicica.com/textadept/api.html#textadept.editing.paste> N/A Added paste_reindents <https://foicica.com/textadept/api.html#textadept.editing.paste_reindents> *textadept.session* default_session Removed Configuration Changes Textadept 10 no longer uses a *~/.textadept/properties.lua* file. Instead, all buffer settings are made in *~/.textadept/init.lua*, and apply to the first and any subsequent buffers. (In Textadept 9, any buffer settings made in *~/.textadept/init.lua* only applied to the first buffer, so a *~/.textadept/properties.lua* was required in order to define buffer settings that would affect subsequent buffers.) Simply copying the contents of your *~/.textadept/properties.lua* into *~/.textadept/init.lua* should be sufficient. Lexer Changes Lexers are now written in a more object-oriented way. Legacy lexers are still supported, but it is recommended that you migrate them <https://foicica.com/textadept/api.html#lexer.Migrating.Legacy.Lexers>. Key Bindings Changes The terminal version’s key sequence for Ctrl+Space is now 'c ' instead of 'c@'. Regex Changes Textadept now uses C++11’s ECMAScript regex syntax <https://foicica.com/textadept/manual.html#Regular.Expressions> instead of TRE <https://github.com/laurikari/tre>. Mac OSX System Requirements Textadept now requires Mac OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) at a minimum. The previous minimum version was 10.5 (Leopard). LuaJIT Changes The LuaJIT version of Textadept has been removed. Any LuaJIT-specific features used in external modules will no longer function. - QUOTATION end I also found this here: - QUOTATION start source: https://foicica.com/textadept/api.html#lexer.Migrating.Legacy.Lexers Migrating Legacy Lexers Legacy lexers are of the form: local l = require('lexer') local token, word_match = l.token, l.word_match local P, R, S = lpeg.P, lpeg.R, lpeg.S local M = {_NAME = '?'} [... token and pattern definitions ...] M._rules = { {'rule', pattern}, [...] } M._tokenstyles = { 'token' = 'style', [...] } M._foldsymbols = { _patterns = {...}, ['token'] = {['start'] = 1, ['end'] = -1}, [...] } return M While such legacy lexers will be handled just fine without any changes, it is recommended that you migrate yours. The migration process is fairly straightforward: 1. Replace all instances of l with lexer, as it’s better practice and results in less confusion. 2. Replace local M = {_NAME = '?'} with local lex = lexer.new('?'), where ? is the name of your legacy lexer. At the end of the lexer, change return M to return lex. 3. Instead of defining rules towards the end of your lexer, define your rules as you define your tokens and patterns using lex:add_rule() <https://foicica.com/textadept/api.html#lexer.add_rule>. 4. Similarly, any custom token names should have their styles immediately defined using lex:add_style() <https://foicica.com/textadept/api.html#lexer.add_style>. 5. Convert any table arguments passed to lexer.word_match() <https://foicica.com/textadept/api.html#lexer.word_match> to a space-separated string of words. 6. Replace any calls to lexer.embed(M, child, ...) and lexer.embed(parent, M, ...) with lex:embed <https://foicica.com/textadept/api.html#lexer.embed>(child, ...) and parent:embed(lex, ...), respectiv

Also, sometimes the context requires a new key, such as foregroundcolor= and backgroundcolor=, when color= for example would be ambiguous. Thirdly, many keys are inherited and passed-on to an included command. Finally, unknown or unused keys are simply ignored. This has the advantage that often, just trying the obvious simply works. To quote Poincaré: \startquotation Mathematics is the art of giving the same name to different things. It is enough that these things, though differing in matter, should be similar in form, to permit their being, so to speak, cast in the same mould. When the language has been carefully chosen, one is surprised to discover that all proofs developed for a given object, can be immediately applied to many new objects; there is nothing to be changed, not even the words, since all the names have become the same. \stopquotation Alan ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://context.aanhet.net archive : https://bitbucket.org/phg/context-mirror/commits/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

I was aware of this page > but it contains only the case of mandatory arguments in curly braces > {} not in brackets []. One must *not* confuse with the LaTeX convention where "mandatory" arguments are contained in curly braces and brackets indicate "optional" arguments. As Taco states below, curly braces not only give grouping but generally are used for objects to be typeset, as for \in{Figure}{a} [fig:ref]. For new users, it is worth repeating here that arguments within braces can be either a comma-separated list of words OR a comma-separated list of keyword=value pairs, BUT NOT A MIXTURE OF BOTH. Generally, a keyword=value exists for all words, for example \cite[authoryear][ref] and \cite[alternative=authoryear,reference=ref] values can be grouped using curly braces, as in \cite[alternative=authoryear,lefttext={{see },}][ref1,ref2] where the lefttext is associated with the first cite reference (and none with the second). This can be tricky but is in fact rather straight-forward. Alan P.S. The wiki is only as good as users make it; some pages have not been changed since mkii... Hi, To place the index at the end of the book, I put \placeindex before \stopproduct. It is compiled well. But, for the better output, I have two questions about the index. 1. In the output, it distinguished uppercase and lowercase initial. For example, S Squeeze theorem s set simple statements … Is there a way to make index combining the lowercase and the uppercase together as follows? s set simple statements … Squeeze theorem 2. The index shows the English letters first and the Koren letters follows. Re: [NTG-context] ntg-context Digest, ASCII input - non ASCII output, Vol 161, Issue 13
Thanks for answers, I'm afraid, I didn't completely understand all of you about transliterating commands name. I don't want to do this. I don't want to translate or transliterate command names. I just want to transliterate *text* part of input. I can't split *commands and math* input from *text* input, because there is inline math and commands are all around . It is serious amount of switching. (ALT+ SHIFT keys), and when i'm thinking about what i should type(about subject) i forget to switch, and that's happening all the time. Mojca, for 'ž' i again have to switch keyboard. Also, Mojca probably the best understand what i want and that Serbian language can be written equally in latin and cyrillic script. Some people privately write in one script and some other people in another. So there is a lot of scripts in Serbia written in latin script. But official is CYR. ОТ2 doesn't transliterate commands--- just text --- and i'm able to type 'zh' and 'ж' in the same file and he knows what i want, both input characters he treats the same. that you wanted, and if you cannot >figure it out, ask on the context mailing list." When the interview took place, the replies in minutes in this mailing list were the rule. But these times are over. Sometimes people don’t reply because they don’t know the answer. As newcomers, we all may suffer from the condition “my question to the mailing list went totally unnoticed”. > I understand that we are all busy, and it is not easy to find time to > answer novice queries on the list. Replying to questions takes times. It doesn’t matter (at least to me) whether the question is basic or more complex. The relevant factor is whether I can give a reply or not. > Lastly, I found the Wiki useful sometimes for quick and dirty solutions > to problems, and sometimes as a source of documentation. Yet there have > been several cases where I could not find what I wanted in it. Welcome to the club. It is fine that you ask what the wiki can do for you. But when you find the solution to your problem, consider what you can do for the wiki. Expanding the wiki is the reverse action from replying questions. The wiki requieres time too. > For example, I could not find the answers to my last two queries on this > list and to my two questions on SE, in the manual, on the archives of > this list, or on the Wiki. Unless it is plain TeX, ConTeXt is diverse from LaTeX. My last statement may be obvious, but it drove me crazy almost for years. I couldn’t understand why I was a newbie in ConTeXt (and I couldn’t achieve the most basic things) after having used LaTeX for more than five years. If you want to help people to introduce themselves in the use of ConTeXt, start writing a manual. Maybe not now, but don’t wait too much to compose an introductory book on ConTeXt. I hope it helps you to understand the ConTeXt ecosystem. [NTG-context] Difficulties with learning about ConTeXt
I am a mathematician, and have been using LaTeX on a daily basis since 1992, when I was a graduate student. I have recently started using ConTeXt, and am very happy with the facilities it provides, and with its self-contained system which does not require one to load external packages with subtle interactions. One problem that I am facing is that the documentation of ConTeXt is often not enough for me to figure out what to do when a problem arises. I understand that documentation is perhaps not a priority for the project. As Hans Hagen wrote in `? Context', "... writing can get a lower priority in a time when quick and dirty answers can be found on the internet, mailing list or wiki. ... For what it's worth: whenever I have to solve a problem with a program (or language implementation) I run into cases where I have to look long to find (non conflicting) information. It just comes with the problems one wants to solve and TeX (ConTeXt) is not different." However, there is not a great deal of information on the Internet about solving ConTeXt problems. Whenever I ran into a LaTeX problem in the last several years, I used to find a solution, or a substantial step towards one, that was already documented on the TeX-LaTeX Stack Exchange. Unfortunately, it does not contain a similar amount of information about ConTeXt. In any case, I have started posting ConTeXt questions there, see https://tex.stackexchange.com/q/397463/146025 and https://tex.stackexchange.com/q/397607/146025 As for the mailing list, I posted three requests for help here in the last one week. When I bumped my first message after more than a day without any response, Tomas Hala kindly came to my rescue. The other two messages, posted four and two days ago, have not elicited any response yet. This contrasts with Aditya Mahajan's experience, which he describes in his interview at http://tex-talk.net/2012/08/textalk-an-interview-with-aditya/: "Most questions on the context mailing lists are answered within minutes ... look in the main manual and the wiki to see how to achieve the particular effects that you wanted, and if you cannot figure it out, ask on the context mailing list." I understand that we are all busy, and it is not easy to find time to answer novice queries on the list. Lastly, I found the Wiki useful sometimes for quick and dirty solutions to problems, and sometimes as a source of documentation. Yet there have been several cases where I could not find what I wanted in it. For example, I could not find the answers to my last two queries on this list and to my two questions on SE, in the manual, on the archives of this list, or on the Wiki. These problems mean that I have to spend much more time experimenting and searching before I find a reasonable way to get the things I want with ConTeXt. Given the beauty of the results that ConTeXt returns, I don't mind that. However, I wonder if there are others who have similar problems learning about ConTeXt, and if they have some words of advice for me. I am also interested in ways to help people with similar difficulties. Regards, Raghu. -- N. [NTG-context] Hyphenation with dashes in natural table
Hi, It seems that the hyphenation algorithm for long words with dashes when typeset in a natural table has changed. MWE: \starttext \bTABLE[width=5cm] \bTR \bTD super-cali-fragi-listic-expi-ali-docious \eTD \bTD The longest word known to me that ever had an appearance in a musical. \eTD \eTR \eTABLE \stoptext In earlier versions of ConTeXt, the super-cali... word is hyphenated after "expi-" and no overfull box occurs. In the currently latest version the word is hyphenated after "super-" and, since the rest of the word does not fit the table cell, it overlaps text in the right hand cell. Could this be a bug or do I have to setup hyphenation differently in natural tables? Any feedback is welcome. Re: [NTG-context] italian index: "I" and "J" under "I", "U" and "V" under "V"
> in sort-lan.lua you can fix the table: > > definitions["it"] = { > entries = { > > (not sure which italian is responsible for it) > > Hans > > Thank you, Hans. Looking at the code, there's a revealing comment before the definitions for the Latin language: -- Treating the post-classical fricatives “j” and “v” as “i” and “u” -- respectively. When I saw the bug, I suspected something like that, because "U" and "V" are written as "V" in Latin, but not in Italian. The letter "j" replaces "i" also in Italian when it's between vowels or when it's at the beginning of a word, followed by a vowel. But this is the Italian of a century or at least decades ago; in modern Italian it is rarely used and you won't find it i.e. in newspapers. Classical latin did not distinguish graphically "U" from "V" (classical latin had only the "U" letter and wrote words like "divvus" for /ˈdiːwus/); during classical antiquity and even more in medieval latin (which arrived to us through ecclesiastical use) a distinction between "U" and "V" started to emerge, so the new consonant had been created modifying the "V" letter into "U"... "La J inizia ad essere usata nel '500 fino all'inizio del XX secolo, sia per indicare il suono semiconsonantico della I (jella), ovvero la "i" intervocalica (grondaja, aja), e come segno tipografico per la doppia i (principj). Le lettere I e J erano ancora considerate equivalenti, per quanto riguarda l'ordine alfabetico nei dizionari e nelle enciclopedie italiani, fino alla metà del XX secolo." The "J" letter started to be used in XVI century until the beginning of the XX century, to suggest the semiconsonantic sound of "I" (jella) or the "i" between vowels (grondaja, aja), and also as a typographic sign for the double "i" (principj). "I" and "J" letters were still considered equivalent in the alphabetic order for italian dictionaries and encyclopedias until the midst of XX century. Getting back, to sort-lan.lua, it should be like this: --- definitions["it"] = { entries = { ["a"] = "a", ["á"] = "a", ["b"] = "b", ["c"] = "c", ["d"] = "d", ["e"] = "e", ["é"] = "e", ["è"] = "e", ["f"] = "f", ["g"] = "g", ["h"] = "h", ["i"] = "i", ["í"] = "i", ["ì"] = "i", ["j"] = "j", ["k"] = "k", ["l"] = "l", ["m"] = "m", ["n"] = "n", ["o"] = "o", ["ó"] = "o", ["ò"] = "o", ["p"] = "p", ["q"] = "q", ["r"] = "r", ["s"] = "s", ["t"] = "t", ["u"] = "u", ["ú"] = "u", ["ù"] = "u", ["v"] = "v", ["w"] = "w", ["x"] = "x", ["y"] = "y", ["z"] = "z", }, --- Thank you again, best regards, Massi ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://context.aanhet.net archive : https://bitbucket.org/phg/context-mirror/commits/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

Hans, I have a document http://tex.ousia.tk/hippocratic-oath.pdf (source as attachment to the PDF document itself). The special kind of notes are the first group in two columns. I need that their space and location in page are calculated by the notes mechanism. And also that the notes mechanism selects the range of notes that belong to the page. I don’t need any reference, not to note number or to line number. Since it is a vocabulary list, what I need is a minimal register with "indicator=no, before=, after=". So it would be possible to have well-balanced columns and words alphabetically sorted, which is essential in a vocabulary. I guess that \definenote[NAME][alternative=register] and \setupregister[NAME][indicator=no, before=, after=] could be a good way to invoke these page-related vocabularies. Sorry, Thomas, I’m afraid I don’t get your point here. I mean, if alphabetic sorting makes any sense at all, this is to sort index and dictionary entries. (If not, please tell me what I am missing here.) Imagine that LSJ is edited again in 2017. You purchase the paper edition and you notice that vowels are sorted considering their diacritics too (resulting in cases such as ἅλς placed after ἁμαρτία). Do you really want an index that sorts every form of every word as an entry? So that ἐμήν and ἐμοῖς are different words and not occurrences of the same entry? If that's really what you're looking for, you may want to look into a very handy luatex function: characters.shaped() returns the unaccented characters of a unicode string, see chapter 11.2 of cld-mkiv.pdf. Define your own command that uses this lua function to index the unaccented word; that's not too hard. 2. If, on the other hand, you want to build a real index that will sort morphological forms under their head words, you will have to give the sort term explicitly, and then you don't have to rely on ConTeXt's abilities to sort accented Greek because you will have something like ἐμήν\index{εμοσ} in your text. Re: [NTG-context] Index with distinguishable entries -- again
Thank you very much for your example -- it really helps a lot! That’s one smart trick for the endnotes. It will do fine for my current project, but obviously it will not work for footnotes directly on the pages. I had somehow hoped that there would be something like „if within some environment/command" to the processors. With this also the formating of the items within the captions could be done automatically. A real problem though is that adding \setupregister [index] [compress=yes] will wrongly compress e.g. "aaa 1, 2, 1n“ to "aaa 1–1n“. Dear Mohammad, Hi, Thank you very much for your reply. I forgot to mention that I had modified the fontsampler codes so that I can use it in ConTeXt with Dabeer module. However, inspired by your reply I could get it to work in LuaTeX but not in ConTeXt with Dabeer module. Are there any other set of features that I can test? Re: [NTG-context] annotated text: main text in narrower text, annotations on the right
Thank you, Wolfgang and Jean-Pierre! I've modified your example and now it resembles what I was looking for. Now I can use \inright to get annotations on the right of the main text, but inside the width of the normal text. The annotations are aligned to the line they occur in the main text. It's somewhat tricky, because I need to leave the second paragraph empty. Is there a way to obtain that effect without setupparagraphs? Anyway it works as I wanted, so now I have a solution. Dears Joseph, Hans, Wolfgang, Arthur (and others), As a French user of ConTeXt (current version: 2016.07.18 16:46, generally on Windows 10, time to time on Ubuntu), I am currently working on a book in French, with Greek quotations, and some rare occurences in other non-european languages. Before version: 2016.07.18, there were conflicts in hyphenations (with '\setuplanguage[fr][patterns={fr,agr}]' command) that Hans has fixed. But some disgraceful double dots [:] used to stay at the beginning of lines. With the '\setcharacterspacing[frenchpunctuation]' command, all end that end well. I found no more hyphenation issues, nor punctuation ones, even within text defined by \definefallbackfamily setup. \setuplanguage[fr][patterns={fr,agr}] \mainlanguage[fr] \setcharacterspacing[frenchpunctuation] Le 09/08/2016 à 23:21, josephcan...@gmail.com a écrit : Dear all, Combining patterns for french and ancien greek languages, I noticed there are wrong hyphenations at quote char as shown in following MWE. Hi Hans, I'm afraid I'm lost here. When I copy what you write you get and paste it into my example I still get, with Verdana 10 pt, no hyphenation errors with mkiv version 2015.10.09 21:28 and some with mkiv version 2016.07.18 16:46: marv-elous and di-scriminate. So doesn't it show that at least the two mkiv-versions differ in this respect and that when using the new version something extra or different has to be done in the setups to get the correct hyphenations? Fortunately I still have kept some of the older ConTeXt-versions, so my project will not suffer from hyphenation error. But I suspect that reliance on older versions should not have to be necessary.
