Clearly not OK.
context ignores cases in filenames and in fact in tds there cannot be
two files with the same name ... keep in mind that windows is case
insensitive ... if there are files with the same name then they normally
are in (sub)paths that are identified by some distinctive category
(variable)

These issues are still open, I attached my current test file.
1)
There’s always space/indent in front of the note text, I’d like to get rid of
that.
Notes should look like:
texttext text
texttext12 text 12
text texttext Some remarks
But at the moment they’re like:
texttext text
texttext12 text 12
text texttext __Some remarks
2)
If there is a possibility to influence the page breaking algorithm for notes,
I’d like to know about that.
Stacking works nicely most of the time, but I have a few pages where the notes
don’t fit.
The only option I know of is \adaptlayout to move lines of the main text.
Something similar for note lines would be nice.
Another possibility would be to have some (very long) notes as footnotes
instead of margin notes.
Is it possible to switch placement but keep the numbering? Maybe via different
note setups and manually setting the counter?

This analysis is not quite correct. The mkiv bibliography system is not rigid at all, in fact it is eminently configurable. However, the APA specification that is programmed is rigidly adhered to, and it is up to the responsibility of the user to configure any desired deviations. The outstanding bugs that Rik refers to are either obscure special cases, misuses of bibliography fields, or simply a special configuration request. There may be some outstanding bugs in a system that is still not fully tested under all conditions. BibLaTeX introduces many incompatible and curiously defined fields. A ConTeXt specification that uses them can be written, but I am not going to do this as I see no point. BibLaTeX is a good example not to follow. There are "plans" to write other humanities-focused standards, but there needs to be some motivation and more importantly, a clearly written standard. I use the "bibliography" subsystem as a general database tool, defining glossaries, tables of crystallographic symmetries, catalogs of diagrams, etc., so it is quite a bit more flexible than just to create bibliographies. That should not be the case. Could it be, that the highlight-xml module fails to load? Please check your log file for a "module not found" entry. I have attached the result of my earlier sample. Michael,
Hans seems to have fixed this problem, which was an obscure lua issue
having to do with collecting references interacting badly with trial
typesetting, as is done in xtables. The correction should make it to
the beta soon.

[NTG-context] \cite not working with notes in xtables

I have this MWE that reflects my current layout where I have images in an
xtable with captions defined as note. Both, footnotes and captions are set in
the margin.
The Example compiles correct with just one caption in a xcell. If there are two
(as in the MWE) the \cite command doesnt work.
Could this be a conflict on the lua side of xtables/publication framework?
The second problem of course are the footnotes that are not placed on the
correct side.
I thought \automigrateinserts would help here. But it doesnt.
Any hints how to solve this?

I tend to use a single typeface (maybe with a fallback for Greek glyphs)

As Thomas put it, it is beter to provide a minimal sample, even if it doesn't
work correctly.
Given that, you can dig in this list archives, which contain few questions on
the topic you are dealing with.
I am afraid that you can't achieve your goal (which is more or less a text
within a frame with a title), without MP, which seems to me a good tool to draw
such frame.
I remember that Fabrice Couvreur once has asked in 2016 a similar question, in
order to draw a frame for a "summary" at the end of a chapter.
You need to populate the preamble of your file with something like below (you
have to test it and modify it to your needs).
Pay attention ! You have to give a \start command, after the \starttext
command, inside the body of your text, when you want \startMyFrame[Title=A
Title], and when to stop the frame with the \stopMyFrame command.
Have a look to the code below and test it (note that the frame is red in this
sample).

But I am not picky and something like beamer floating boxes (theorem,
proof, ...) for latex is good for me too.
In wiki, the frames doesn't have title and I'm not sure about if I have

Questions:
* what is the way for implement a title in the frame?
* Could you write a minimal example witch allows me to complete it for
my needs?

The most recent update (ConTeXt ver: 2017.10.29 15:44 MKIV beta fmt:
2017.10.30 int: english/english) has broken \cite processing. I now get
the author name (poorly formatted) instead of the translator, and
instead of the title, with the example document.
If this is not the result of some misconfiguration or misuse of the
macros on my part, can this part of the update be rolled back?

Hello, some time passed... I'm still trying to: - download hvdm-plc documentation (link http://www.hvandermeer.com/publications is broken) - install & use hvdm-plc module (which may be named differently under ConTeXt distribution). There was a mail traffic on this theme but I'm not sure all has been finished so that there is a HvdM's "place-block" module available under Ctx. So - what is the state of the module, in relationship with Ctx? Thank you very much, this solves my problem for the most part.
Coming back to this now, since I completed my previous book project (with the
register issues) and attacking the next one (that needs those numbered marginal
notes).
It would be nice if we had a solution how those notes won’t collide; is there
some trick how I can shift a note up or down manually?
Additionally, since my note number gets its own line, I’d like to get rid of
the indenting, but couldn’t find the right parameter.

I have resolved the issue in a practical, but unsatisfactory, manner.
I have resorted to creating an interlude, a new heading derived from
title, setting it for left pages with no displayed head:

Thus, \startChapterEpigraph can safely be placed before each
\startchapter (and between the last \stopchapter of a part and the start
of the next part) when that last chapter ends on a recto). This clears
the chapter marking in the headings of the new verso. When there is an
epigraph to set, it is placed in the ChapterEpigraph section.
This is unsatisfactory because it implements an inaccurate semantic
model of the document – the epigraphs belong to the following chapter,
not the numberless, nameless interlude.
And there is almost certainly a bug lurking here. I had considered
adding the marking of the next chapter to the interlude to better tie
the interlude to the place it belongs. When I made ChapterEpigraph
derivative of chapter:

at the end of the level, and not simply override them when the next
equivalent level starts? (Although perhaps, based on the observed issue
described just above, there is some other logic at work here.)

Are you asking me to add: "\automigrateinserts" to the wiki example as a
different mechanism to demonstrate from earlier in this thread, proposing
it as a different solution this problem, and/or proposing it as a solution
to the "not rendering inside the wiki ConTeXt version?

By the way, wouldn’t be more user friendly, and more in
the spirit of ConTeXt, if we had a command saying
\enablemode[mkvi]
in order to tell ConTeXt that we are using %macros = mkvi ?

I believe you need to declare the use of MKVI macros as the
first thing in your project file if they will be used by any

The %macros=mkvi line is not needed in dm1.tex. It should be at the top
of MyLayout.tex.

[NTG-context] Bibliography in MKIV, custom rendering
Hello,
You find a need to modify the rendering of the bibliography as you are
misusing the bibtex data entry.
Here is your example, corrected:
1) @electronic is more appropriate than @misc;
2) Apple Inc. is not a name so you should not be using author:
organization is more appropriate.
Note that the only difference, in fact, between @electronic and @misc
is this optional field, organization. We get this from the bibtex
references and from the standard definitions in bibtex tools such as
jabref.
Your example did point out a correction that should now be in the APS
specification definitions in the latest version that can be found on
the Garden. Previously, a url (or doi) got included as a hyperlink
tag to the text "howpublished" field. The logic has been modified to
show the url (or doi) explicitly if present, in the absence of the
howpublished field.

Well, it's all on purpose ... no excuse for bad structuring .. anyway,
i'll support the criterium flag in sections too:

and for sure i'll forget about it so I wonder who will document it ...

Hi Idris,
this should be the default (it is actually \setupheads[indentnext=no]).
I think there is a bug here, because \setuphead[alternative=margintext]
prevents "indentnext=no" from working.
You might use "insidesection=\noindenting", but this only works if you
don’t use \starpar...\stoppar. And this is only a workaround.

But this may be difficult to automate except for simple cases.

Idris, if you use Windows 10 then may be your OS has been updated (some time ago one of host I has access with Windows 10 has been upgraded to ver. Windows 10 1703) and then you have updated fonts, including Cambria. it's ok here; it could depend on the cambria on your machine
Cambria Regular : cambria.ttc
Cambria Italic : cambriai.ttf
Inspection shows cambria.ttc is indeed regular.
The log file says
:
mkiv lua stats > loaded fonts: 2 files: cambria.ttc, cambriai.ttf
Updating to "current version: 2017.08.02 18:59" and purging the cache
doesn't
help

it's ok here; it could depend on the cambria on your machine
Cambria Regular : cambria.ttc
Cambria Italic : cambriai.ttf
Inspection shows cambria.ttc is indeed regular.
The log file says

Updating to "current version: 2017.08.02 18:59" and purging the cache doesn't
help

the easiest way is to disable bold in links:
\setupinteraction[state=start, style=]
Or I guess you would have to enable bold in the footnote reference numbers.

For the future: Should I write one mail per question or all in one? :)
1. Color of references and table of content:
How can I define/change the colors of references and the table of content? And
why are some references red and others green?
2. Own title format
I've set an own title format for chapters, like described in the wiki.
Unfortunately this applies to the table of contents and bibliography as well.
Below a minimal example, that reproduces it:

The wiki shows, how to completely autolabel figures in a combination with mkiv.
Is there a way to simply prefix the label with a), b), c),...?
Another related question: Is there a way to define the width and align of the
labels of a combination?
5. Numbering of floats
I want a numbering for my figures in this format:
way=bychapter, prefixsegments=chapter
I guess, this is the default, but I've explicitly set it.
In some captions the prefix is ignored. For example there are 5 figures in
chapter 2, then the captions of the figures (the text is in German) are:
Abbildung 2.1 foo
Abbildung 2.2 bar
Abbildung 3foobar
Abbildung 4otherfoo
Abbildung 5lastfoo
Is there anything, I can do, to prevent this?
6. Multiple references

I did use: \setupnotes[footnote][split=verystrict,scope=page] so I guess there is not much hope here. A related question: the numbering of endnotes is placed in the leftmargin. Is there a parameter setting that forces them in the textarea of the page? I tried \setupnotes[endnote][location=text] but without success. [NTG-context] a string xmlpath in Lua
Hello list, is there a Lua function to get the XML path of an element as a string? \xmlpath typesets the path, I need a similar function for Lua, but the path should be a string to be worked on in Lua. This is the problem originating that question: i must name (give an id to) some anonymous XML elements (read: "without an id attribute"), and their path is a good candidate. To be more precise: when i parse a element, i look for elements representing footnotes, to prepare them with \setnotetext; then the table contents are parsed and the footnotes' markers are typeset with \note[footnote_id]. When there are more footnotes, i need to identify them, to give \note the right footnote id. I did read your question and answer with great interest, since I encountered
similar issues. Sadly your trick to get footnotes that are defined in some
environments like tables displayed at the bottom of the page does not work if
you try it using backgrounds. Here I provide a minimal example that shows the
problem:

[NTG-context] Footnote in TABLE isn't rendered anywhere
Hello,
in the current ConTeXt Minimals (ver: 2017.06.30 19:45 MKIV beta fmt:
2017.7.3) the following example doesn't show any footnotes:

\bTABLE[split=repeat,align=normal]
\bTR\bTD Something\footnote[x]{bla bla}\eTD\eTR

That second note reference (\note[x]) even causes a warning:
references > unknown reference '[][x]'
(Local footnotes work in this case, but I prefer global ones.)

Note that structurally the above combines "Knuth writes:" and the first text segment (up to the first blank line or \par) of knuth.tex into a single paragraph with some glue and a break between them. You would lose any paragraph-formatting of the first segment of knuth.tex. If there is any, you might have to do that by hand. If you wanted to have the Knuth quote begin below the initial K, then someone else will have to answer. I don't know off hand. [NTG-context] a special kind of notes in each page
Hans, I have a document http://tex.ousia.tk/hippocratic-oath.pdf (source as attachment to the PDF document itself). The special kind of notes are the first group in two columns. I need that their space and location in page are calculated by the notes mechanism. And also that the notes mechanism selects the range of notes that belong to the page. I don’t need any reference, not to note number or to line number. Since it is a vocabulary list, what I need is a minimal register with "indicator=no, before=, after=". So it would be possible to have well-balanced columns and words alphabetically sorted, which is essential in a vocabulary. I guess that \definenote[NAME][alternative=register] and \setupregister[NAME][indicator=no, before=, after=] could be a good way to invoke these page-related vocabularies. Would it be possible to have such a feature? This would the way to have page vocabularies. I didn’t check my code on Windows (all my computers at home run Linux).
I’m suprised that it worked.
And thanks for warning about the path and %USERPROFILE%. Of course,
ConTeXt and LuaTeX do magic, but organizing files is a task that belongs
to the user ;-).

worked fine on Windows.

[NTG-context] getting the glyph of a character
Dear all.
At page 50-52 of the manual of metapost, “Mpman”, it is explained to get a
glyph of font using the command ‘glyph'.
glyph ⟨numeric expression⟩ of ⟨string expression⟩
glyph ⟨string expression⟩ of ⟨string expression⟩ .
Is it possible to do the similar thing in metafun?
I couldn’t make it happen using the following code.

Thank you for suggestions, I'll do some testing.
In case I forget, please remind me about this after the 4th May. We
currently have as good as no internet connectivity and I would hate to
break the server while experimenting and then being unable to do
anything afterwards.

[NTG-context] Problem loading a DLL with the latest Ctx beta
How exactly do you mean to combine "ffi" and
"--shell-escape" to work with latest ConTeXt/LuaTeX?
In usual luatex, ffi needs --shell-escape, since ffi
is dangerous from the point of view of the security.
As you know, ConTeXt allows --shell-escape, so the
following works with context test.tex.

Add a sample, otherwise we might speculate about what you’re aiming at.
Tagging PDFs the way you seem to be trying might be impossible. Here is
my sample:

This is an issue about text structure. We speak of block elements
because they have vertical space between them (even if set to none).

It seems that H3 should be a block element, not an inline element inside
P (according to most XML implementations, I’d say).
Why do you need in-line titles?

and if I do not have to track the level and recurse to pick up each
component that would be better.

When called for the first time, the code generates test-ASY.pdf file and

ConTeXt generates an error because the name of the files is the same, but
the content is not.
There should be an option for \externalfigure to disable this check, but I
couldn't find it. Here is an alternative approach, that changes the name
