It is a math alphabet. The original error was from a hidden \mathrm.

Ups. I get the error but only with a version which resided in my
windows fonts folder. When I force lualatex to use the version in
the texmf it disappear. For the faulty font I see in the lua-file:

I have no idea how to transpose the following latex example to
context. Also in my opinion the input is wrong, it should be written
as \mathtestbase{fb}^{-1} (and this works fine).
So I'm only posting this for the case that it indicates some hidden
problem in the fontloader.
The error I get from the document below is
! error: (nodes): attempt to double-free math_char node 100300,
ignored
! ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced!
The fonts used are
[latinmodern-math.otf]:mode=base;script=math;language=DFLT;
and
STIXTwoText:mode=base;script=latn;language=DFLT;
Imho the relevant points to trigger the error are
- a math alphabet which uses mode=base
- a ligature in this font (fb here)
- a following math symbol directly behind the ligature (\int would
give an error too).

[NTG-context] trying out "plug mode" and the harfbuzz plugin
I read the guitex article about ffi and luatex and wanted to try if
I could run tests with harfbuzz and the plug-mode.
Looking in the newest context I found in onandon-ffi.tex a reference
to the module fonts-plugins. But this module loads a lua file which
isn't in context:
\registerctxluafile{font-phb}{} % harfbuzz plugin
Is this an oversight or is the code not meant to be used? Or is
there something newer somewhere else?

With the newest context the problem is gone. In latex too if I use
luatex 1.08 instead of luatex 1.07. So I guess it was an engine bug
;-).

We see this in latex too, at looks as if only single atoms are
affected, so adding something to the subscript gives another result:
$\gamma_{e^2} \gamma_{ee} \gamma_{e\hphantom{\strut}} \gamma_{e} $
(I can't test it with context, for some reason it currently don't
find the stix fonts on this pc)

[NTG-context] synctex file is not compressed
I seem to be not able to get a synctex.gz instead of a synctex file. I tried context --synctex=1 file and context --synctex=-1 file but in both cases a simple synctex-file is created. Actually the italic is taken into account *inside* math.
This here inserts \kern1.52 after the "F0151 and \kern2.45 after the
"1D4AB (the math.italic values of these glyphs):

The problem is the boundary between math and text. There seem to be
no way to insert automatically or manually the kern if the \cal P
(\Umathchar"7"0"1D4AB) is the last char in the math.
Btw: I found in the luatex manuel the options
\mathoption nocharitalic 1
but it seems to do nothing (the example in the manual show imho
identical output).

[NTG-context] italic correction after math
In the following example the calligraphic P bumps into the following
x.
After some searching in the archive I found some discussions from
2012 and had the impression that this either shouldn't happen or
that the behaviour could at least could be changed with
\setupmathematics[italics=n].
But in my examples \setupmathematics[italics=...] doesn't do
anything. Every line looks looks identical to me (the second example
is from the header of xits-math.lfg). Is this behaviour expected? If
yes, what should one do to get an italic correction is such cases?

I don't want something "systemwide". I have too many texsystems and
don't want side-effects (actually I want context to see the texlive
fonts, to make test easier).
I can set OSFONTDIR only for context, but it would be a bit tricky.

How can I add a simple folder (not a texmf tree) with opentype or
truetype fonts to the search path of context?
I have tried with a local texmfcnf.lua and

but correct would imho be
mtxrun --script fonts --list somename
Also I would have expected that "mtxrun --script base --expand-var
VAR" works, but actually I needed "mtxrun --expand-var VAR".)

also got the knack of the syntax.
A few questions:
1. "lookups = { 1 }," refers to the first lookup. Is it possible to
name the lookups and to refer to this name?.
2. 0xFFFC refers more or less to the begin and end of line, right?
Why doesn't it interfere with hyphenations? I tried to get

I have been trying to use the newest generic font loader
(luatex-fonts-merged.lua) in the context minimals with luaotfload
in latex.
This mostly worked with one exception: luaotfload-letterspace.lua
reference a value that no longer exists:
"...mf-dist/tex/luatex/luaotfload/luaotfload-letterspace.lua:73:
attempt to index local 'nodepool' (a nil value)".
luaotfload does

The problem is that with the stix 2 math fonts, parentheses don't
grow in a font with active +ssty feature when using luatex with the
context based fontloader. (With xelatex everything is fine, harfbuzz
seems to do it as wanted).
Below are two examples: One a mix of plain and context, and one with
a (shortened) typescript definition from a posting some weeks ago.
In both cases the parenthese in the second exponent is too small (I
attach an image, but don't know if it will come through).
Imho the source of the problem is that the font contains
parenleft.ssty, parenright.ssty, parenleft.ssty2 and
parenright.ssty2 glyphs and these "wins" when the fontloader is
looking for variants. The glyphs are *not* in the vvariants-list of
the parentheses. Other delimiters are not affected.

The original question was on the luatex list on 10. May ("Combining
diacritics in some fonts: "(linebreak): invalid list tail, probably
missing glue""). I then converted it to an issue for luaotfload.

I tried to make one but didn't manage to reproduce the error --
perhaps because the problem doesn't exist in context or perhaps
because I didn't manage to reproduce/add the needed hyphenation

Did you saw the error message caused by the ccmp-feature
(https://github.com/lualatex/luaotfload/issues/412)? Does it affect

there is an example how to add or change the kern between two chars:

Can this be used to implement also a "Single adjustment positioning"
which would effectivly change the width of character?

I updated my context version and changed my luaotfload.conf so that
it uses the context fontloader. Then the following plain tex
document (and a similar latex document) works and gives the wanted
output.
BUT: If I uncomment the AU+0323 then I get a fatal error:

This "invalid list tail" is popping up now an then. Philip even

I looked at the code and it actually uses an idea that I had already
tried. The problem I couldn't solve was do decompose a glyph.
Looking at an context example it seems that context can do it. The B
with dot below (U+1E04) ends as BU+0323 in the pdf. But how does
context does it? It doesn't happen with a similar latex example.
There the U+1E04 is simply missing.
And why is the dot of the first B better placed than the second?

I agree that it would be neat to be able to disable it but on the whole: if I had only the choice between "the xetex-substituation" and the current luatex/context behaviour I would prefer the first. With context (and lualatex) one get a rather bad looking -- as the dot is misplaced -- output for the A0323 input and no output at all for 1e04. As the coverage for precomposed glyphs varies a lot across fonts this is rather a nuisance. I'm not sure. Imho cut and paste use an heurisitic more or less
based on the size of the space (there are quite a number of
questions on tex.SX where the heuristic fails, e.g. in code
listings), while reflow seems to need glyphs. The speech of Ross
Moore on TUG14 seems to indicate that \pdfinterwordspaceon was
introduced in pdftex to get around this problem.

Well the main question is, what is the "does it" in this case.
pdftex inserts a space from a dummy.pdf. One use the fake space more
or less like this:
\pdfinterwordspaceon
\pdfmapline{=dummy-space <dummy-space.pfb}
\pdfglyphtounicode{space}{0020}
XXX YYY
\bye
But this doesn't sound like the correct way to go in a unicode/open
type world.
(I'm also not quite if shipout is the correct time. Imho one would
probably avoid to add spaces e.g. in math).

Simply using \let doesn't work when you want locally a different
expansion behaviour:
! error: (font expansion): font has been expanded with different
stretch limit.
(with pdflatex + lualatex), that's imho the reason why microtype
copies the fonts.

That's easy if one can select the fonts explicitly, but the question
was triggered by the url package which internally switches to math.
Also in the context example there aren't two font definitions:

Nevertheless "\test" seems to use mode=node outside math and

When I compile this in context all number are oldstyle numbers:

When I run a similar plaintex (or latex) example in texlive 2016
with a new luaotfload then the text numbers are (as wanted) old
style, but the numbers in math mode are lining numbers (the font is
correct):

\font\test= {name:TeX-Gyre-Termes:+onum}
\test 0123456789
$\fam0 \textfont0=\test 0123456789$
\bye
So somehow in math the +onum is lost in plain and latex but not in
context. What is context doing differently to avoid this? (It can't
be the fontloader. I forced luaotfload to use the context files from
the minimals.)

But the plaintex and latex examples on tex.SX don't use a math font
for operatornames like \sin or for \mathrm (which seems to be
\mfunction in context). It is a text font and it has ligatures and
kerning informations, but they are not used in math.
Doesn't use context for \mfunction a text font too? I thought so
because it has kerning when used outside math:

$\mfunction{WAiff}$
\stoptext
Also bad kerning in operator names is a nuisance. I don't think that
the default result of
\definemathcommand[VA][nolop]{\mfunction{VA}} is good looking.

Yes, one workaround is to quit math mode. The other to use fonts in

There are some tricks, like \uppercase{d}, commands, braces, which
one can use to fine-tune the name parsing.
Is there a hardcoded list somewhere or is it name begins with a
'word' in lowercase. IMHO it would be desirable that the prefix
itself could be specified in a field.
Well the main problem is that authors are name *lists*, and that
there can be more then one name list in an entry.
But biblatex is extensible. You can, if you want, define a new field
say authorprefixes={de,von,none,Bbla} and then write suitable
macros that uses this prefixes instead of the one parsed from the
name. But I doubt that it is really needed. One shouldn't
overcomplicate a system only to catch every special case.

sure, you can use any field you like and you can adapt yoru rendering
setups to use them
the problem is not so much to support variants of fields (although I
really dislike this mixed upper/lowercase mess)
You can write everything in lowercase if you want. The syntax only
expects the _ to separate the main field and the variant/language.

EDITOR_whatever used at the same time?
You can. There are commands to choose a specific variant, but you
can also define fallbacks. So something like
Editor (Editor_translated) or Editor translated but fall back to
editor if it doesn't exist is possible.
The main problem is not to get lost in the variants/fallback chains.
Another problem is to get name lists right: After all it is possible
that only some authors needs to be romanised. But with the help of
the name hashes I was at the end able to do something like Müller
and 柳田聖山 (Yanagida, Seizan) ...
Smaller problems are how to write the names correctly -- after all
not everywhere in the world names follows the lastname, fistname
convention.

But with the help of the name hashes I was at the end able to do something like Müller and 柳田聖山 (Yanagida, Seizan) ... so basically you order by a mix of name and romanized name (or romanized name with name as fallback)? In this special case it seemed the logical thing to do. As you wrote in a later posting: many books about latex are in parts outdated as they couldn't keep up with the development e.g. of tikz, biblatex, expl3 etc. So I don't see how you can claim that latex doesn't change at all.
