That's what I prefer, too. Bringhurst (v.3.2, p. 81f.) only uses
the date as an example for the opposition virgule/solidus and
states that “[i]t is useful in dates [...] and in text where a
comma or parenthesis might otherwise have been used”. He does not
give general advice wrt typesetting of dates.
For the record, p. 406 of the TeXbook has this:

The alternative defintions for \date and \externalfigure i showed do fix the problem with the space after the command but the price for this is that you can write the arguments in two different lines or put a space between them because the second argument is then no longer seen by tex. Dear ConTeXt folks, I have four questions regarding `\date`. I looked at the page in the Wiki [1], in the ConTeXt user manual on page 159 [2][3] and tried some things, but could not figure it out. I am using Debian Sid/unstable and I am a total beginner regarding ConTeXt. 0. I guess the first question is, if `\date` is supposed to be used inside a text anyway or just when for example setting the title page. 1. Fixing it for command which appear in the text is the best solution for me but it will take time but it has to be documented somewhere because such a change will likely only happen in mkiv. [NTG-context] Reverting to an earlier date in CVS repository (was: mkiv, luatex and tikz)
Hello, Sorry, the wrong mailing list for this question, but I still hope to find some guru here ... On the garden we fetch the version of TikZ from CVS at http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=142562 (because it often provides the functionality that's not available in stable version, including some very important patches; for example - smooth shading functionaly that Aditya was asking about only works in XeTeX with CVS version and not with the stable one). Apparently some patch broke TikZ support in ConTeXt completely (not only in luatex), but I'm not very confident with working with CVS. Can someone please give me a short hint how to revert to an older version of TikZ from CVS repository? cannot find a way of getting a three-letter month using the \date
command.
For example, I would like to display today's date as 23-Apr-08. This
gives a short display suitable for use in a margin, but avoids the
confusion of American (04-23-08) vs English (23-04-08) ordering when
using
numbers.
Can anyone help?

without resetting it to C just after the tex.print(), then I get this
error:

I already had that when writing a small script to output PDF by hand. To be precise, on Mac OS 10.5 I need “fr_FR.UTF-8” to reproduce this behaviour, not “fr_FR.utf8” which looks a bit suspicious. I have already heard that the French version of some mainstream Linux distribution (Ubuntu, I think) set locales to the absurd value “français”, which was a problem not only because it was absolutely not standard, but also because the system couldn't guess what encoding the ‘ç’ was in! Just about all string-to|from-float C functions (like strtod, scanf, atof, printf) and even the string-to|from-integer ones (strtol, scanf), are automatically influenced by the locale. The same is true for all tests like isspace() and isalpha(). It is intended to be helpful, but as a programmer I simply hate it. Hello All, I have consulted the manuals and even the source (core-con.tex) but I cannot find a way of getting a three-letter month using the \date command. For example, I would like to display today's date as 23-Apr-08. This gives a short display suitable for use in a margin, but avoids the confusion of American (04-23-08) vs English (23-04-08) ordering when using numbers. Can anyone help? Thanks. new: OpenType (for XeTeX and LuaTeX)
old: metrics/encodings/maps for pdfTeX
common: mostly math-related metrics/encodings/maps + AMS fonts
It depends. If you already have fonts on your system and if you don't
need TeX Gyre, you don't need to fetch any fonts at all.
You can follow the pattern mentioned above to fetch all the fonts at once.
I add ~/texmf/bin to the front of my PATH.

And then I follow all that up with a rebuilding of the format files with
texexec -- make --all

I used Context to write an entire novel in 2005 (under Fedora linux).
Since then I didn't
do any work in Context until now. I am now coming back
to write a second book (under Ubuntu this time), and found myself
totally confused with all
this new business of luatex, mkii, mkiv, installation, etc. This set
of messages touches
many of those issues, but it is not organized in such a way that I can
follow a step-by-step
procedure to use the latest Context. I even question whether I need to
use luatex.
Could any of the Context gurus give me an advice or provide a document to
update my Context in ubuntu?

I won't be installing any modules now, so I can ignore that part of the tree.

Second, for mkiv I always use new context files from pragma; I compile last metapost and luatex and put all stuff under /opt/luatex I feel good with this, because i can change/update distro without pain, and manage stuffs under /opt is also easy. The only drawback of this is that you have to update manually. ctxtools --updatecontext unzip the file in TEXMFLOCAL, and not TEXMFHOME, so it does not work with this setup. I used $HOME/texmf rather than TEXMFLOCAL because there are some other programs that install stuff at TEXMFLOCAL. With the current mechanism, I can just mv $HOME/texmf to another directory, and go back to the context that comes with unbuntu. When I was trying to typeset date in Chinese environment(\usemodule[chinese]) using the commond \currentdate, the date format was strange: 2007 五月 18(the month was in Chinese). What I want is 2007.5.18 or 2007-5-18(the month should not be in Chinese). How to achieve this? Hello, I have pagesize papersize and use crop marks. What I actually miss is the possibility to put text (Project name, date/time) outside the page. Currently, ConTeXt only prints there the colour bars, the page numbers and the crop marks. Taco, isn't this a bit too general? All the fonts I have converted with texfont are shared by LaTeX and ConTeXt, and I haven't had any trouble so far. My rule of thumb was: if the font itself (i.e. the tfm) works at the basic level of TeX recognizing and using it, everything else is just a question of a clever use of typescripts (ConTeXt) and font definitions (LaTeX). The only precondition: I gather all the relevant lines into one big mapfile which is read by ConTeXt at runtime (\loadmapfile[my.map]) and has to be enabled via updmap-sys for LaTeX. But AFAICS, the Berry-namimg scheme is not necessary even for LaTeX. Or am I being overoptimistic?
