people.

The settings to send email with Thunderbird in IE will be found in IE
and Not Thunderbird. Go into your IE settings and look for applications.
You should be able to set Thunderbird as your email client in IE. Sorry
I can't be of more help, but I'm not running Windows at the moment.

Is Dvd Audio Extractor really the best program for extracting audio from
Dvd videos? Enquiring as I am considering purchasing the program, but not
without exploring other avenues first. For example I am trying BitRipper.
While it can rip audio tracks only, it would appear that it can only do
one track at a time judging by a combo box. With Dvd Audio Extractor I can
select one or more titles, even all of them if I wish, and all chapters in
those titles get extracted.
Any responses will be greatly appreciated before spending the $38. Thanks!

Re: Feedback Needed Concerning Sound Cards

2013-05-13 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Are you talking about a desktop system or a laptop? Any desktop system
should have empty PCIE slots and open USB ports, so you should be fine.
If you're talking about a laptop, I think you can get pretty good USB
sound cards, so that shouldn't be a problem. There are a few brands of
laptops that have paired up with audio companies, so I'd assume they'd
have pretty good built in sound cards. HP has a laptop with their Beets
system. Good luck.

Hi Adrien.

I use a program called Sound Taxi to lower the bit rate of
files. It works
great. You'll have to use the mouse to configure things in
the program, but
once you do that for the first time you don't have to worry
about the mouse
anymore. The program costs something like $40. Do a search

you'll find the web site.

Re: Dvd Audio Extraction

2013-05-12 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I would agree. I've tried other programs, but they all require you to
know a bit about the files on your DVD. Sometimes extracting the audio
from the right file can be a bit hit or miss. DVD Audio Extractor takes
any guess work out of it.

DVD Audio Extractor is, in my experience, great software and definitely

could put something together using freeware like FFmpeg or other less
user-friendly tools, but DVD Audio Extractor ties it all together in a
convenient, easy-to-use package.

As for alternative, similar applications, I honestly haven't tried any,
but nor have I felt the need to so make of that what you will. The only
feature I wish DVD Audio Extractor had was the ability to name and tag
individual titles, which would come in useful when ripping box sets, but
it's no great hardship using something like Mp3tag to get the job done
afterwards. There is a fully-functional 30-day trial of DVD AE
available, so give it a spin and see what you think.

I convert video files to audio files all the time. The resulting audio
files take up a fraction of the space of the original video files. Plus,
although it's probably not an issue in this case, the audio files are
much more portable and can be played on many more devices. Converting
files also takes a fraction of the time and results in better quality
than playing the video file and recording it in real time.

I haven't used MrV files before, but if I were to work with them on
Windows, I'd check out Switch before anything else.

First you must get the URL of the Youtube video you want. I have five
e-mails which each has one link to a video. I used the append to
clipboard to have all five links on my clipboard. If you are not
comfortable with this or don't know how to do this, you could open a
text editor and copy and paste each URL into the text editor. Here are
my links:

http://www.youtube.com/user/fourtwelvevideos

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNuQbJst4Lk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32-k2_VLq_M

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zsl6YXHdWnE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1v=PcwGrzA8Cj4feature=endscreen

If you have them all on your clipboard you can go to your previously
opened Freemake Video Converter. If you copy them to a text editor
just select all and copy with control + c then tab to your previously
opened Freemake Video Converter.

Hit alt

Arrow over to edit

Paste will be the only item on that menu so hit enter. This pastes the
links into the program.

Hit alt

arrow over to convert menu

Down arrow to the format you want to save the file in. If you only
want the audio arrow down to mp3. If you want the video then choose
one of the video formats in the menu.

I have chosen mp3 so that is what I entered on in the convert menu

A dialog will come up. the first thing you hear is mp3 output parameters

Tab once and you will find a combo box and it will say custom.

Tab again and there is a button to create a preset. If you like to use
presets you can go through the dialog for each preset you wish to
create. but I don't use presets. I just edit the custom preset that is
there.

So I tab one more time to edit preset

Another dialog will open and you will hear mp3 preset editor

Tab once and you will hear custom which is what I use so tab again

Here is a combo box to choose the bit rate of your file. You can up
and down arrow through the combo box to find the bit rate you would
like. Youtube videos aren't usually that great so you don't need a
high bit rate. I will set mine at 128 kbps

Tab again and you can choose but I usually leave this at 44,100 hz

Tab again and there is a combo box where you can choose between mono
and stereo by arrowing up and down

the next time you tab jaws doesn't say anything so I don't know if
anything is there or not so tab once more to the OK button and hit enter.

You will end back at your original dialog at edit preset.

Tab again and there is a button to delete a preset so tab again

The next two tabs jaws speaks nothing so I don't know if anything is
there or not.

Tab to the button that says ... and hit enter

Another dialog will open up. This is a tree view just like My Computer
or Windows Explorer. so arrow through the tree view to find a folder
you would like your mp3 to end up in.

Once you have chosen a folder tab twice to the OK button and hit enter.

You will be returned to the top of the original dialog.

Well, I'm not sure how much talking about accessing music files on both
a Windows PC and a Mac are stretching the list topic, since it seems
pretty on topic to me, but asking about an OCR application on a Mac
doesn't seem to have anything to do with this list at all. That's just

iTunes leaves your original WMA file alone. I haven't done this
 myself, but
I found this on the web page
 http://www.apple.com/findouthow/music/itunes.html#management-convertwma

Since WMA is a MS proprietary format, requiring Apple to pay MS a

another drive using add folder to library.

One or more of the songs you are adding to iTunes, including “01
 graphic
870 Rubber Bullets [Long Version].wma”, are in the WMA format.
iTunes will automatically convert them to the AAC format so that they
can be added to your iTunes library.

I accidently hit escape twice when leaving the Jaws virtual viewer
and missed being able to hit the skip button. Itunes started
processing the library even though I pressed escape? I don't know if
it was skipping or processing all those .wma files. Looks like it
didn't start converting because there were no .aac files found in the
folder when I looked with Windows Explorer search.

I'd thought I'd forgotton to turn on restore previous versions for
that drive after reinstalling Windows 7. I couldn't find a previous
version for the folder. However, I did find previous versions in the
 drive's properties.

I searched for all .aac files on my system and only found one very old.
I right clicked and open with which was not a menu but opened a
dialog that was hard to work with Jaws. I finally got it to see
Itunes but accidently hit enter before unchecking always use this
program to open this type. Itunes didn't open. Now when I right
click that file the open with is a sub menu with Windows Media Player
and Itunes in it. Also choose default program. So, I screwed up once
again. Makes a grown man weap!

I can't believe they would make it hard to import wma files. I have
so many I don't want to convert. I'll have to back them up first. I
hate software that makes me choose without preperation.

 Itunes already sucks!

Can't I keep Itunes from damaging or changing my origenal wma files?
If I check this; Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to

folder leaving the origenal wma files in their place?

Re: anyone knows any solution to compress a 6 gig rar file to 2 gig?

2012-12-29 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Since a RAR file is already compressed, I doubt you'll get much more out
of the compression, but you could check the settings used in the
application you used to generate the RAR file. Sometimes you can trade
off time against the amount of compression. If you didn't create the RAR

Thanks Alex. Well, the problems started during the installation.
Firstly, unlike my Window Eyes, JAWS wouldn't tell me which check
marks were checked in the library section. Hitting the spacebar where
I knew the check marks had to be gave me no response. So I had to take
the default settings. Also, unlike Window Eyes, I didn't get any

It doesn't read the bookmarks correctly, meaning that when you arrow

the urls that go with the titles. So something isn't running properly

it was on the classic skin, but who knows? The way JAWS reads things

Re: Sound Taxy?

2012-09-04 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I haven't pulled up Sound Taxi with JFW 13, but I did use it with
earlier versions of JAWS. It required a little bit of JAWS cursoring,
but it was pretty straight forward. Also, once it's set up, it's pretty
much hands free. For example, when I brought up Sound Taxi, it would
default to the right directories, load the files in the source
directory, and all I'd have to do is just hit the convert button.

Re: Problem with Hope for Pandora, No Response from Support

2012-08-31 Thread Christopher Chaltain
You definitely need to log into Pandora with Hope. If you're not being
prompted, that's probably because Hope remembers your log in
information. If this is a new install of Hope then you will need to log
into Pandora at least once or create a new account. If you're trying to
use the same account information, such as the same user ID, then it will
fail. As you said, try going to the Pandora page to retrieve the log in
information or try to register with a different account name.

Well, she had a version of Hope on her old XP system, but it wasn't
transferred onto the new system by the person that was hired to take
care of all that stuff. That old copy of Hope didn't ask her for login
info either. If she set up an account on Pandora, then it was a long
time ago and there's no way she would recall the username or password
she used to set that up. She tried registering with the new version,
but it keeps saying that the registration failed and that she should
try new credentials. I did some playing around with Pandora years ago
 before Hope was developed, so I did have an account already set up;
although I have no idea what my username and password are for that now.

So basically, if I understand correctly, we need to go to Pandora
itself and either recover her old username and password, or create a
new account. Then use those to log into the account. Then Hope will
log her in automatically after that. Do I have that right?

 Thanks much.

It would still be nice to know why we can't get a response from the
 support address.

Googling for aiff file extension yields the fact that WMP and most
media players should handle AIFF files. I also checked and Switch from

able to do this.

I'm curious. How many processors does each person have? A dual core

multitasking while I was doing some audio processing tasks was

Re: An Easier Way To Get Sound Blaster Driver Updates?

2012-07-20 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't think Device Manager was lying to you. I believe Device Manager
checks your local hard drive, any removable drives you have loaded (such
as a manufacturers CD) and the MS update repository for device drivers.
If you haven't downloaded a newer device driver and RealTek hasn't
uploaded one to MS then I don't think Device Manager will find it. For
example, it doesn't check the RealTek web site. There are other 3rd
party applications that will do this for you.

NLS USB drive set up [was Re: Seem to have lost my touch]

I'm not sure if you get any additional features using the audio+podcasts
folder, but I've always found the NLS player finds all of my MP3 files
regardless of what folders they're located in. For example, I used to

Re: Still Looking For Help With Winamp

2012-07-05 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't have access to my Windows machine where I have Winamp installed,
but I think you have to be using the right output device in Winamp to
have the volume of Winamp be separate from your screen reader volume.
Try a different output device in Winamp to see what happens. I'm not
sure what the original problem was though, since I don't see the full
thread below.

On 05/07/12 11:20, Joe Paton wrote:

I think the screen reader actually directly adjusts the audio device,
where the winamp volume adjusts actual output from winamp.
I could be wrong, I often am.

you need to start from somewhere as they say, so remove winamp.

Then go to the program files directory, and remove the winamp directory
 if it is still their.

to be completely thorough, you could also remove the directory in
documents and settings, users user applicationdata there's a winamp sub
directory their which holds user settings, and I doubt if the audio side
is controled from here anyway but be completely sure, remove this
 directory as well.

re-install winamp, remembering to accepth the clasic theme on the
 visualisations side of things.

If you haven't got an recent winamp let me know and I'll send you a link.

If after re-install, then the problem shouldn't be winamp, but a shared
 component.
So then you might want to re-install your sound card drivers, not always
 easy, but can be done.

I suggested that you try another player to try and narrow down the
sources of your problem. Not conclusive, but a pointer.

 Good luck.

I think it's perfectly OK for someone to provide an answer without
necessarily providing the link. Not every utility I have on my system
has an easy way to grab the link from where I found that utility. I
assume the person asking the question can use Google just as much as I
can. If after looking for it, they're having some trouble finding it,
then I may be able to help out. Of course, if I have the link handy,
I'll also send it along, but I don't see anything wrong with this
answer. None of us are paid to provide customer support on these lists.
If you don't like an answer then use the delete key.

My experience with the library, over multiple generations of Winamp, is
that the library is accessible for the local media and things like
managing your podcasts. It isn't accessible when it comes to managing
other remote content, such as radio feeds and the like.

Arthur and list: Is the library still accessible with 5.6? I ask
because, I seem to recall hearing that there was one version of
Winamp that came out where you couldn't do much with the library as
far as the screen reader (in my case, that'd be Jaws 13) is concerned!

Hey Joe and list: Thanks for responding; may give this a try!
Just to clarify something: the actual sound isn't so bad; it's
just that, if something is playing at low volume; let's say I want
to listen to a stream that doesn't play at a high volume, I'll get
that static (or hiss) or whatever! For those who don't know, in
Winamp, to advance through the file, you can hit either the left or
right arrow key (I know it works this way with Jaws) may be
something different with other screen readers; anyhow, one can also
hold that arrow key down to advance through the file quicker; it is
here that gets me into trouble as I get that bad sound! But will
try Joe's suggestion (unless I get one that may be better) and see
if this clears up the problem (I've had this happen a long time
ago) but don't remember how it was resolved!

 tom,

You could try an alternative output pluggin.
go to prefferences control-p, press letter P till you hear plug
ins, press O till you hear output, then tab to the list, there is
a waveout, and a direct sound.

Select the plugin that is diffedrent to the current one, tab to
 close accepting the default settings.

see houw your audio sounds after this change.

Then maybe try playing the same file in, for example, windows media.

don't know how you fast forward in WMP though.

 good luck,

 Joe

Re: Ripping CDs With CDEX: How Do You Tell CDEX to include Title And Artist In Track Listing?

2012-06-16 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I assume it's in the help files for CDex, but I think you just need to
go into the CDDB tab of the CDex preferences, which I think you can get
to with F4, specify an email address (note it just has to follow the
email address format and doesn't have to be a real email address) and
then choose either freedb.org or cddb.com for your track info database.
Note that I didn't feel like going downstairs and firing up my Windows
desktop just to look up this information, so I'm going from memory and
what I was able to Google. I hope this proves useful!

The problem is that I very seldom boot my Windows PC anymore, but going
from memory, I think you should be able to click on the library view and
then view by artist or album to look for those stray tracks. Note that
you can also use other media players like Winamp or FooBar to look
through your library, if those interfaces are easier to use. Even
Windows Explorer should do the trick.

I need to do some ripping on my Windows PC anyway, so I'll take a look
and see if I can offer up any better tips than that.

that or the various, or the unknown artist.
When i rip a cd through wmp I actually search to see if there are
multiple entries for the cd sometimes I'll find more than 2 or 3

track lists are different or the number of tracks are different.
One more thing, IMO, winamp is a much better autotagger than wmp.

Yeh, that agrees with my experience with last.fm. If I want to listen to
some classic rock, I might create a station for Queen, and I'll hear
Queen plus music from related bands. I also find that last.fm seems to

where it will play that artist and similar artists. It actually gave me
a list of those similar artists that it would play, and I tried it out.
It did not play just stuff from the original artist I clicked on. I
think it did a very good job of picking similar artists to the one I
like. (Now if I could only find how to adjust the volume.)

If you haven't, try doing a search for a specific metal band and see

 Hello,
I'm exploring last.fm internet radio. I would like to pick a heavy
metal channel on last.fm that would automatically play mix of heavy
metal by diff bands for me. I have arrived at last.fm's page of
 heavy metal. URL is below.
 http://www.last.fm/music/+tag/heavy+metal

But on this page I see is the option to click on the names of specific
individual metal bands and play the music of only that band. this is
not what I'm looking for as I state above. Also on this page are bunch
of diff genres of metal that one click on like, power metal, speed
metal etc. if you click on any of these it just takes you to yet
another page where really the only option I can see is to select and
click a specific band and then last.fm plays music from just that band.

How do I get last.fm to play me metal with songs from diff bands?

for editing. Maybe it was my golden years or champagne taste, but I
then started listening to speakers a level above these. I compared
the Mackey MR5, Yamaha MS 50 and Tannoy 501a speakers. The sound from
the Tannoy speakers was brilliant and clear, but the bass was rather
evident. With the Mackey, the bass made the whole sound image sound a
little muddy. The Yamaha was crisp and clear, allowing me to hear
every sound detail, every breath, every voice inflection, absolutely
everything picked up by the microphone. It was clear and completely
uncolored audio. I understand why this speaker and its famous
predecessor, the NS 10M, which used endangered wood, are the industry
standard. I ended up buying the Yamaha speakers and glad I did.

I found the online and published reviews of all the different speakers
rather meaningless. All said good things about the quality speakers.
At a certain point, different kinds of people are attracted to quality
products for different reasons. The real review is in the listening
room hearing the speakers for yourself. I paid about three times more
than what was paid for the M-Audio AV 40 speakers. Guitar Center price
matched the lowest price available on the Internet, cutting the cost
by $80 for the pair. I printed the web page with this lower price and
it was accepted without a hassle.

When I arrived home and connected the speakers, I began editing some
of the spoken word recordings I have made in the last few months and
can’t believe the clarity. These are highly recommended for anyone

Yep you're correct, generally computer speakers are crappy however
the old policy applies here, You Get What You Pay for.

I've reviewed a number of different sets of speakers on this list,
Altec Lansing Expressionist Plus and Expressionist Ultra speakers,
 both are excellent speakers.

The Ultra is better than the plus but you're going to pay a little

The Expressionist Plus are quite reasonably priced given what they do.

Well, I'm sure I'm not one of the Christopher's Adrian is referring to,
but I'm sure I'm in that illustrious class of Christopher's Dane is
talking about. Hopefully, he's not really discriminating against
everyone named Christopher just because of his feelings towards me.

I don't feel myself to be a pretend list cop. I've merely pointed out
what is clearly stated in the info for this list and provided my
opinions, with explanations, on where I think this list should go. I've
provided links to other sources of information and other lists, when
I've known about them, and when I thought someone could get more
accurate and timely information elsewhere. I worked hard to make my
statements tactful and polite and free from rudeness or criticism. I've
tried to be nothing but supportive of the moderator and even help out
where I could. In fact, I think both Tom's and Steve's messages were in
support of my statements and efforts, although maybe I misread those
messages, but I suspect it's rather a case of we're all in more
agreement with one another than maybe we realize.

I also think Dane is being a bit hypocritical in this situation. Several
times he's made bold and unequivocal statements on what is and isn't on
topic for this list, which smacks of wanting to be a moderator to me.
He's complained that others are rude and making the INTERNET a less
friendly place, and yet he posts a message like the one below.

IMHO, I think we should move on and let Tom's statement speak for
itself. We all seem to be in agreement that it's Tom's list to moderate
as he sees fit.

As far as I'm concerned Mr Moderator, you're doing a damn good job at
moderation and thank you for posting to the list, I'd rather hear from the
moderators themselves than pretend list cops, why is it that all the
Christopher's I know are an absolute pain in the behind to deal with
 smile.

Anyway back to the subject in hand, this list has a wide scope of messages
on it at anyone time and some of these threads do start off on the right
subject but can lead to others which aren't appropriate for the list
perhaps? Well in such cases I reckon that good moderation dictates that at
least a list member or 2 can point a person to another list or group which
can deal with a subject more efficiently, an example of this sort of thing
might be playing music on a mobile phone, its easy to start talking then
about accessibility with speech which can probably be handled better on a
list which is dedicated to mobile phone accessibility so the least that can
be done to try and be helpful to all concern is for someone to post details
 of that list.

Portable MP3 players on topic for this list? -was Re: re question]

2012-03-16 Thread Christopher Chaltain
According to the info page for this list, it says:

PC-audio is a list for the discussion of any PC audio related topic
such as PC audio software like sound editors, audio players and audio
formats; and hardware like sound cards, CD and DVD devices and so on.

I read this to mean that portable MP3 players (which are not PC's) are
not on topic for this list. I'll further point out the following:
* There are quite a few lists already for different portable media
players that get far more traffic than this list, so I would encourage
the moderator to not allow the discussion of portable media players on
this list. We could easily be swamped by discussions on iPods and
iPhones. I've already left several lists since I don't have a device
from Apple yet, and I don't have time to wade through all of the
discussion on those products.
* If the original question were posed to a Humanware or Victor Stream
list, it seems like the question would have been answered much more
quickly and efficiently.

Well, that's my $0.02 and I'll leave the rest up to the moderator and
the list itself. Note that I think this is an important topic since, as
I said above, this list would become meaningless, at least for me, if
it's subject matter is going to become too generic.

I'd also suggest that if we're allowing such wide ranging topics then
it's even more important to use good subject lines. That way it'll be
easier for the different subject matter experts to pick out the messages
they're interested in and the people posing the questions will get
quicker and better answers. I'd also like to see the whole threads get
posted as well. Sometimes it's hard to tell what the original question
was or whether the point I want to make has already been addressed yet
or not if I can't read through the whole history.

Re: Portable MP3 players on topic for this list? -was Re: re question]

2012-03-16 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Ah, I'm not trying to moderate this list! IMHO, the moderator already
does a great job. That is one job I don't want, and I'm fine with
letting someone else do it! :-)

I'm also perfectly fine with abiding by his decisions. All I meant to do
below is point out what he specified when he set up this list and what I
personally thought that meant with respect to his intent for this list.
I'm not sure how many people look at the info page for a given list or
the introductory message they get when they sign up for a list before
they start figuring out what is and isn't on topic or what is and isn't
appropriate for the list. On some lists, you used to see periodic
reminders of the lists guidelines, but that practice seems to have
fallen by the way side, since I don't think I've seen that practiced
much lately.

Even with a clear statement on what's on and off topic for a list,
things are still open to interpretation, which is why I think it's
important to occasionally get a decision from the moderator on some of
the Grey topics. I have my own opinions on where to set the boundaries
for this list, and I gave them below, along with my reasons, but as I
said, I'm perfectly OK with whatever the moderator decides, and you
won't see me questioning his decision or arguing with him on this list.
This is his list, and I'm just trying to be respectful to his intentions
and the time and commitment he makes to setting up and moderating this list.

Stereo to mono when adjusting playback speed {was Re: re question]

2012-03-15 Thread Christopher Chaltain
This is the same behavior with the DTBM from NLS and the Booksense, i.e.
once you adjust the playback speed, you hear mono instead of stereo.

Just curious, but wouldn't this be off topic for this list? I'd suggest
a better list, but I don't have a Victor Stream, and the generic MP3
player list I was on switched over to focusing on iPods.

Also, I'd suggest a more descriptive subject line. Depending on what I'm
using to check my messages, I don't always open them up if the subject
doesn't catch my eye. Note that I did change it myself with this message.

Re: Separating Speech Synthesizer from Music and Streams

2012-03-13 Thread Christopher Chaltain
My experience with USB sound cars has been limited but positive. I would
think you'd want to send your screen reader through the built in sound
chip and stream your music out of the USB sound card. My understanding
is that the built in sound chips are pretty low end, especially in
netbooks, and your USB sound card will almost certainly be a better
quality sound card.

 would probably do the job.
Since I am looking at this for playback and not recording, I am not concerned

Does anyone have good or bad experiences with USB sound cards? Second, does
there seem to be an advantage

 Thanks in advance.

Wow, wasn't someone on this list just complaining on how rude the
INTERNET has become? I guess this is another case in point.

BTW, you can reach the list archive by going to:
http://www.mail-archive.com/pc-audio@pc-audio.org/maillist.html

I agree that people can refer to the list archive more often or even
just use Google to find things out on their own, but I think people can
be encouraged to do this without posting such a rude and pointless
message to the entire list. For example, Georgen could be new to the
list and wasn't aware of the fact that this has been discussed recently.
The location to the list archive could have been pointed out.
Unfortunately, not everyone keeps the introductory messages they get
when they subscribe to a list or can figure out where the list archive
is or how to search it on their own.

I hope Georgen and others aren't dissuaded from posting perfectly
legitimate questions to the list.

BTW, I did see the smile at the end of the message, but slapping 7
characters on at the end of a mean spirited message doesn't make it OK.

According to the web page
http://www.soundtaxi.org/soundtaxi_audio_conversion_Audible.php this is
supported. I'm not saying it doesn't violate your terms of condition
with Audible, but at least according to the Sound Taxi web site, this is
technically possible. I also noticed that Quicktime is a prerequisite
for Sound Taxi, so this also lends some credibility to that statement.

To test it, you can download Sound Taxi for free and use it in trial
mode. It's fully functional, but it'll only convert a few minutes of
audio. This is enough to see if it's going to work or not.

The Platinum version costs $20, but I'd suggest upgrading to the pro
version for $27. It's only $7 more, and the performance makes it worth
the price if you're going to be using Sound Taxi to convert more than
just a handful of files.

I rip to MP3, and I use something less than a 320K bit rate, so I don't
think you're insane, but it depends on what you'll be doing with these
ripped files. For my part, I'm not an audiophile and I'm not going to be
playing these on a high fidelity system, so I make some allowances for
speed and convenience.

If I had the ears that I had when I was younger, and I had the time and

IMHO, you're not insane for going with what makes sense for your situation.

 Hi Brett,

I used exact audio copy to rip my cd collection, comprising around 1000
discs to flac. To date I haven't encountered any tracks with audible
artefacts, even those which eac reported as having possible errors.

Eac seems to be generally regarded as the most accurate ripping tool
 around.
By utilising both secure mode, and the accurate rip facility, I reckon
 you
can be pretty sure if eac reports no errors you have a perfect copy.

The process of ripping even a collection of a few hundred discs can be
 time
consuming, so it pays to get it right first time.

With this in mind, I personally feel it's well worth taking the time to
learn and configure exact audio copy.

 Cheers,

Re: would like a program for ripping CD's

2012-02-19 Thread Christopher Chaltain
It's been a while since I've ripped a CD, but I had switched from CDex
to WMP. I just started having the occasional problem where CDex wouldn't
rip a CD or wouldn't retrieve the proper metatags, and I would use WMP
in those cases, so I just switched to WMP altogether. It was accessible
when I used it, free and probably already on your system. It doesn't
have the options as some other CD rippers, but it did what I wanted it
to. That's just another option for you.

hi I am not that technical when it comes to setting up a program for
ripping CD so what I would like is.
I good program for ripping tracks off of a CD if I should ever have to.
But I would like to get the best sound out of what I would rip as I can.
Would Cd Ex be good for that?
And if so what is and where can you go to get the latest verison?
Also what is the best format to extract tracks from a audio disk in to?
What about ripping in to OGG.
What would be the best setting to use for that file if you were

Converting Audible to MP3 [was Re: audible]

2012-02-19 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I assume these are DRM protected correct? If so, I used to use a program
called Sound Taxi when I converted DRM WMA books from Overdrive.com. I
assume it would work with Audible as well though. It is not a free
program though. The original setup required some use of the JAWS cursor,
but once it was set up, it was pretty much automatic.

If these aren't DRM protected then I used to use a program called Switch
from NCH. The free version of this program took care of all of my audio
conversion needs.

I don't see the message you're referring to, but obviously, once you
purchase something you can't do whatever you want with it. I can not buy
a CD and then start reproducing it at will to either give it away or to
resell. I couldn't do the same thing with a book either.

There is the fair use concept in the US legal system, where you're
allowed to make backups or copies of a CD, VCR or the like for your own
personal use, but Audible is allowed to ask you to waive this right to
use their services. Bottom line, regardless of what you think, you are
bound by the terms and conditions of the agreements you enter into.

Depends on where you purchase them from. I'd suggest checking out the
terms and conditions of the site where you're purchasing your books,
Audible in this case. Does Audible allow you to burn their books to a CD
or copy them to an MP3 player? I'm not sure about Audible's terms and
conditions or how they enforce their DRM strategy, but I would assume
you can still listen to your Audible books even after you leave Audible.
You'd still be bound by the terms and conditions that you agreed to when
you bought the books though. I'm not exactly sure what you're objecting
to though, since I don't see the message you're replying to below.

It's been a long time since I've used Audible, and I don't think I have
the books I bought from Audbile around any more. I guess I should
probably check that Windows system where I put them, but I'm sure those
books are up on BARD by now. I've used Overdrive.com though, but that's
a bit different. I never purchased a book from Overdrive.com, I was just
borrowing them, and I obviously had to agree to get rid of any copies
I'd made when the lending period was over.

Re: Converting Audible to MP3 [was Re: audible]

2012-02-19 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I didn't see anything on Audible's purchase conditions about needing to
continue to have an active account with Audible. I'm sure the media
player needs to check that your license is valid, but I too would be
surprised if it's actually checking that you have an active account with
Audible. Your Audible ready portable media players are obviously not all
going to be able to do this. Your PC, laptop, netbook, ..., may not
always have access to the network either. I'd assume you could still
listen to your book or other Audible purchase though.

You are allowed to make one copy to a CD or other tangible media. You're
also encouraged to back your purchases up. The purchase terms also say
your license exists as long as you have a copy of the material, although
there's some legalese wrapped around this statement.

Your purchase terms are at: http://mobile.audible.com/purchTerms.htm

Re: would like a program for ripping CD's

2012-02-16 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I've used CDex and Windows Media Player to rip CD's.

The file format you'll use depends on what you mean by best sound and
best format. If you don't care about the size of the file or how long
it'll take to rip or how long it'll take to copy to a MP3 player and you
have the ears and the sound equipment to hear the difference then you
would want to go with a lossless format like WAV or FLAC. There's also a
lossless form of WMA, and I would assume there's a lossless form of AAC
as well. BTW, you'd also want to make sure your MP3 player will support
these formats.

If you're willing to give up some quality for size and portability then
you'd want to consider a lossy format like OGG, MP3, WMA, AAC and so on.
Again, you'll need to figure out what formats your MP3 players will
support. MP3's are ubiquitous but may not give you the sound quality you
want or the level of compression you're looking for. CDex has an insane
setting when ripping and this will give you the best quality with a
lossy format assuming again you don't care about the size of the file
and you'll be able to hear the difference. I'm not sure exactly how all
other CD rippers work, but there's usually a setting or preferences
option somewhere with a slider that will let you set the bit rate and
other options that will effect sound quality.

I'm not an audiophile, and my ears aren't good enough to hear the subtle
differences in these file formats, so I usually just stick with MP3's.
this also gives me the added benefit that they can be played anywhere.I
also don't use the 320 bit rate any more, but I'm not sure exactly what
I use these days.

I'd suggest trying a few options to see what you like and then trading
that off against the size of the files and the MP3 player you'll be
using. If I were an audiophile and I didn't care about time or disk
space, I'd do something like rip all of my CD's in FLAC and then convert
them to OGG as I copied them out to my MP3 player. I could then twiddle
with the bit rate to get the quality of music and the number of files I
wanted on my MP3 player.

Re: Samsung Galaxy line of products, are they accessible?

2012-01-14 Thread Christopher Chaltain
For my part, this is clearly off topic for this list, but obviously it's
ultimately up to Tom to decide. If any topic related to cell phones or
screen readers was on topic for this list then we'd quickly be
overwhelmed. I think this is evident given how many lists there are
dedicated to screen readers and cell phones. In fact, whether this is on
topic for this list or not, a list dedicated to cell phone access would
be a more efficient way to get you the information you're looking for,
as a previous message from Dane will demonstrate.

A good list would be the accessible phones list, which you can subscribe
to by sending a blank email message to:
blindphones-subscr...@mosenexplosion.com

BTW, back to the original question, I don't think Samsung is trying to
compete with the iPhone. Look at the specifications of the Galaxy line
of phones and how many devices are out there running Android versus IOS,
and you might find that it's the other way around.

Not all Galxy phones run Android 2.3. The Galaxy Nexis for example, runs
Android 4.0 (also known as Ice Cream Sandwich) which has some serious
accessibility improvements, including being able to activate Talk Back
from the setup screen with no sighted assistance. In addition to Talk
Back, other screen readers for Android include the free and open source
Spiel as well as Mobile Accessibility for Android from Code Factory,
which is not free.

Back to the topic of the mailing list, here's what it says about what's
on topic for this list in the greeting email each of us got when we
subscribed to the list:

Willfully posting an off-topic message is

2012-01-14 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'm not sure I see the arrogance you do. It looks to me like we just
have two sides of an issue. Both sides seem to be stating their case
with equal certitude, so if there's any arrogance it's on both sides. I
also don't understand the reference to RAR files. I sort of recall
someone thinking RAR files were a compressed file format, so I can see
where they'd think asking about them would be on topic for this list,
but as I recall, it was explained in just a message or two what was
going on and how to deal with them. I don't recall anyone arguing that
discussing archive formats was on topic for this list. Even so, I don't
think one off topic posting means everything is on topic.

Re: Meta Data

2012-01-11 Thread Christopher Chaltain
These are called ID3 tags. One place where you can read up on them is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ID3#Editing_ID3_tags

Usually your CD ripper will connect to a DB and prepopulate your ID3
tags for you. What CD ripper are you using?

Also, media library applications, like Winamp and Windows Media Player
will let you edit your ID3 tags and even make global changes. I know you
can have your music stored in files and folders based on the ID3 tags,
but I'm not sure you can go the other way, such as update your ID3 tags
based on the folders and files where your music is stored. I know they
can use this data to populate empty ID3 tags, so maybe you can do what
you want with one of these applications.

If you're using Windows, you can edit your ID3 tabs through Windows
Explorer. Just use alt+enter to bring up the properties view and
control+tab over to the tab that has your ID3 tags. In addition to
Winamp and Windows Media Player, there are other applications you can
use to make global changes to your ID3 tags. For example, in Ubuntu, I
use a tool called EasyTag.

Subject lines [was Re: Taking The Punt On A New Device]

2012-01-09 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Well, IMHO you use bad subject lines at your own risk. Depending on
which mail client I use, I'll sometimes only use the subject line to
determine if I'm going to read the message or just delete it. Others on
the list have said the same thing and the description of the list is
pretty clear that using good subject lines and changing the subject line
when the thread changes is expected. If you want some help or you want a
question answered then it's in your best interest to make the subject
line as meaningful as possible.

I don't think the RAR example is a good one since I think the originator
was confused and didn't realize that the RAR file type indicated a
archive and not a compressed audio format. Maybe that subject line
should have been changed, but since the subsequent responses had to do
with which tools to use to unpack the RAR file, I'm not so sure that was
necessary, although I have to admit, I don't remember the subject line
anymore.

Besides, just because someone else chooses to use a poor subject line
doesn't mean that it's then OK for everyone else to do it! Instead of
perpetuating a mistake, you could set an example instead! :-)

An online seller with whom I do regular business with today offered

Now I'm going to give Twitter a mention again because its come to my
rescue, no sooner did I mention that I'd bought one of these tuner
sticks then I received quite a few messages from people who use
Screen reading technology who own these devices, it seems that users
of JAWS 13 have no trouble using the Tuner Stick whatever thanks to
the OCR technology employed, they can see the channels and therefore
click on the one they wish to listen to, record etc so that's neat!

The software supplied with the Tuner does not I'm told have any
keyboard shortcuts which is a shame and seems to be very poorly
written however users of Windows 7 can take full advantage of the
tuner by using the Windows Media centre.

I also heard of others who have used this Tuner under LYNUX quite
successfully, it would appear that LYNUX is the best operating
 environment for this tuner.

Anyway I'll keep the list informed of my progress with this device,
should have it this time next week.

Also, is there a reason this discussion is going off list? Is another

RAR files are archive files, like ZIP files, so you don't convert them,
you unpack them. I'd recommend 7-Zip from: http://www.7-zip.org/

Last I knew, which wasn't that long ago, 7-Zip was free, accessible and
supported RAR files.

Re: TV on computer list, unsuccessful

2012-01-05 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I would think graphics cards are pretty clearly on topic, although I can
see where you might get so specific and so deep that the discussion
would only be of interest to a few people.

I would also think that accessing your cable companies DVR or streams
from your PC would also be on topic, but I could see where you could
easily get into the merits of one cable company over the other, which
would clearly be off topic.

BTW, I applaud your sensitivity to keeping discussions on topic!

Are you saying Tom, that 5 people left the list specifically because of
the cable TV thread? I'm kind of surprised someone would leave the list
for a thread I didn't even realize was going on. I guess people have
different levels of sensitivity. I also wonder how interested those
people were in the list to begin with if they left because of one thread
which may have strayed off topic.

BTW, here's the information I got when I subscribed to the list as far
as what the list is for. I just offer this for informational purposes. I
don't have any comments on it, other than I think it looks good, and I
like the ban on test messages!

Welcome to the Pc-audio@pc-audio.org mailing list! Welcome to the
pc-audio group. Please take a moment to review this message. You
should save it for later reference, as it contains important
information about this group, such as your password, how to change
your preferences, and a few basic rules of conduct we expect all
members to observe.

Attention! Do NOT send a test message to the list or you will not be
subscribed very long!

Guidelines.

PC-audio is a list for the discussion of any PC audio related topic
such as PC audio software like sound editors, audio players and audio
formats; and hardware like sound cards, CD and DVD devices and so on.

While the subject matter is wide ranging, this is not a forum for the
discussion of non-pc-audio matters. There are many other lists for
political or other discussions.

There are also some PC audio related topics which are specifically
excluded from the allowable topics. The explicitly prohibited topics
include:

* requests for songs or other audio files * promotion of audio streams
except for occasional announcements of special events * advertising
audio products and service Willfully posting an off-topic message is
strictly prohibited. While it may be considered that one or two
messages that are off topic can't hurt, if everyone on a large list
like this took that approach, we would quickly descend into chaos.
Asking for replies to be sent privately makes no difference.

Some examples of off-topic messages include:

* Virus alerts * Jokes and humor * Advertising items for sale * Test
messages * Non-audio software and hardware

You're not missing much. A couple weeks ago there were a few posts to the
list about cable companies and cable programming and I mentioned that those
messages were not appropriate for the PC Audio list. Now, within the past
week or so there's been several messages about home theater and watching
television on a computer and I've just been letting the thread play out to
see where it goes. I'm not sure where exactly to draw the line. A list
member ask for the e-mail addresses of those who would be interested in
continuing the subject off list. So, I think that is about the extent of
 the issue.

If only seven members showed interest, that's a very small percentage of the
total list membership, almost five hundred members. Since this thread has
been going on, five list members have left the list.

I think most list members are interested in primarily audio and closely
 related subjects.

I don't think Windows XP has anything built into it that can handle RAR
files. You can create and uncompress ZIP files through Windows manager,
just check out the File pull down, but not RAR files. I think this is
also true with Windows Vista and Windows 7, but I'm not sure about that.

Hi. You can't convert .RAR files to MP3. .RAR files are a kind of
 digital
envelope. It is a compression tool for multiple file types. If you have
say 100 files you want to send to a friend, some might be WAVE, some mp3,
others might be .AVI or Flac etc. The point is you can compress all
 these
files into one zipped file and in the process it compresses the files
 to a
smaller over all size making it easier and more convenient to upload. To
compress and then extract the files you need a programme called either
 .zip
or 7zip or winrar. Windows XP has a built in basic compression tool
 as does
 windows 7. Walter.

Given the context, I assume it's an archive manager that can handle RAR
files, and I assume you can find it at: http://www.izarc.org/

Are you looking for a burning program or a ripping program? You're
asking about a burning program, which is where you want to burn music
from your PC onto a empty CD, but later you talk about getting music off

I believe you can just use Windows Explorer to copy or burn music from
your PC to a blank CD. You might need to have the music selected or a
blank CD inserted before these options show up. It's been a while since
I've done it, and that was on Windows XP.

If you're looking for a way to rip CD's with Windows 7 then I believe
the program you're looking for is Windows Media Player.

Re: Burning CD's

2011-12-27 Thread Christopher Chaltain
So it sounds like you want to get music from your CD's onto your PC.
After that, you want to transfer that music to your portable players.
Would these portable players be things like MP3 players? Do they involve
CD's at all?

I think you want to rip your CD's, It doesn't sound like you want to do
any burning. Windows Media Player will rip the music from your CD's and
then place it onto your PC. It'll also let you update portable media
players. You don't need Windows Explorer for any of this. Other
applications, such as Winamp, iTunes and so on will do the same thing.
You can also use a ripper like CDex to get the music from the CD onto
your PC. Depending on the MP3 player, you may be able to use Windows
Explorer to copy music files to your MP3 player. This assumes that it
shows up as a removable drive when you plug it in.

Re: foobar and assigning keys for stop and play and things like that

Have you gone in and set up your hot keys in FooBar yet? Here's a post
that was sent to this list a little while ago with some instructions on
how to set up hot keys in FooBar. It's a bit tedious, but if you take
the time, you can get FooBar to do pretty much what you want!

To set up a keyboard short cut, you can do the following:

 1) Start FooBar2000 and use control-p to bring up Preferences.

 2) Arrow down to Keyboard Shorcuts.

 3) If you tab over about 5 times, you'll end up on the list of the
 keyboard shortcuts already defined.
Arrowing down this list will select the different keyboard shortcuts and
give you the chance to edit them.

 4) Probably the first thing you want to do is tab over once more to the
Add New button. clicking on this button will add a keyboard shortuct to
your list of keyboard shortcuts with none of the values set.

 5) Shift-tab back to the list of keyboard shortcuts and arrow down to
the bottom of the list. You should hear an entry that has three values
not set. Make sure you do this step or you could potentially be editing
a shortcut you didn't intend to change. I'm speaking from experience here.

 6) Tab over about three times and you'll end up on the list of all of
the functions you could associate with a shortcut key. For example,
you'll have options like volume up, volume down, seek ahead by 30
seconds and seek back by 2 minutes. This list is huge, so you can tab
over twice to the filter field and type in something like seek or
volume to get just those items that have that string in them. After
entering a string in the filter field, shift-tab twice to get back to
the subset of functions containing just that string.

 7) Select the function you want to associate with a shortcut key and tab
over once. This is where it gets a little tricky. You'll hear a more
detailed description of the function you selected, but you're really in
an edit field where you're going to choose the key you want to associate
with this function. Be careful here, if you hit the space bar than the
space bar will be associated with whatever function you selected.
Suppose you chose the function volume mute and then you associated the
space bar with this function. Now whenever you hit the space bar in
FooBar2000, the volume will be muted, even when you're typing in the
title of a track. FooBar2000 will warn you when you try to associate a
common place key, such as up, down, left, right, space, ..., with a
 function.

 8) There's a box where it you can make this a global key. I haven't used
this option, but I assume this will let you use that keyboard shortcut
even when FooBar2000 doesn't have the focus. Again, be careful here.

 9) After setting up a shortcut key you can then arrow over to the list
of shortcut keys to change or review anything you've done. Once you have
the keys set up you want then just tab over to the Close button and
 you're done.

 10) After you've set up some keys, like seek ahead, seek back, volume
up, volume down, ..., go ahead and give them a spin. If you don't like
them, you can always go back and change them. One thing I haven't taken
the time to do is figure out how to have those keys passed straight
through to FooBar2000. So for example, I'll often have to use insert-3
in JFW to have the next key passed through to FooBar2000.

I hope this helps. If anyone has any other specific questions, just ask.

Re: universal headset microphones

2011-12-18 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Coincidentally enough, I just saw Able Planet EXTREME Foldable Noise
Canceling Headphones with Free Microphone on sellout.woot.com for $40. I
just bought this combination a few weeks ago, and I'm quite pleased.

You can use the headphones by themselves by just plugging them into your
3.5mm audio output jack.

You also get a microphone that you plug into the 3.5mm jack on your
headphones. A cable runs from the microphone, and has a 3.5mm UHJ
connector that you can plug directly into your iPhone. It also comes
with a 2.5mm UHJ adapter, which I use when I use it with my cordless
phone or my E71X cell phone. Finally, it comes with a splitter so you
can plug it into a pair of 3.5mm speaker/microphone jacks.

The microphone plugs into the base of the left ear cup, and has a boom
that rotates in two directions. The cable has a mute button, a volume
control and the button that lets you answer incoming phone calls.

I bought a pair of Able Electronics headphones a while ago. I use the
microphone with both the foldable headphones that come with this deal as
well as the non-foldable pair I bought months ago. The headphones are
quite comfortable and the noise cancelling and noise isolation is quite
good.

the computer and on my boombox and/or stereo. On the front of my
computer's tower, there are two small plugs that are side by side. I
believe one is called line-in, and the other is called line-out, or
something to that effect. Anyway, when you feel them, they feel like
headphone jacks. Most stereo headphones, such as the ones found on
portable cd players have a 3.5 centermeter adapter on the end, that
plugs perfectly into the type of headphone jacks I've mentioned above.
So, here's my question. Can any of you recommend a good stereo headset
microphone, that's universal? meaning I can plug it into the computer
using the 3.5 centermeter adapters, when doing things on the computer,
and also be able to plug it into other devices as well if necessary. Is
there any particular brand of headsets that work better than others? I
know its a bit open ended, but I hope my question makes some kind of
sense. Thanks in advance for your help.

Overview

All your digital media, all in one place.
iTunes Player

Where you organize, listen, watch, and play.
iTunes Store

The world's #1 music store. And more.
iTunes Everywhere

On your Mac or PC, iPhone, iPod, iPad, and Apple TV.

Play, buy, and enjoy your music, movies, TV shows, apps, and more.
Everywhere.

I'd suggest going to http://www.apple.com/itunes/what-is/ to check it
out. If you're still interested then you can download the program for
the Mac or Windows and start organizing your music, playlists and

Re: Update on Winamp was Winamp versus wmp...

I've just unchecked Winamp Agent because it's just another process I
don't think I need running on my PC. I don't install enough media
players, and I'm careful when I do, so I don't worry about my file
associations getting taken over. That being said, it's a good precaution
for anyone who is worried about it or has had a bad experience with
losing their file associations. I haven't run it in a while, but I don't
think there's an accessibility issue with JAWS. I'd be curious to know
where FS recommends not running Winamp Agent.

There's another utility called Winamp Remote, or something like that,
which as I recall is not accessible and can get in your way of your
winamp experience. It has something to do with controling winamp
remotely. I've always unchecked this option.

Winamp has a nice feature of remembering your settings from your
previous install, and there's an option somewhere where you just tell it
to install Winamp the same way you did before. This is nice because you
don't have to worry about remembering which buttons to check and
unchecked. Unfortunately, because of this, I can't recall which options
I frequently unchecked!

Re: Winamp Versus wmp Versus VLC Versus....

2011-12-02 Thread Christopher Chaltain
What are you looking for in a media player? I like Winamp because I can
manage my local libraries, my portable media players and my podcasts. I
also like the bookmarks feature and the ability to skip around in a
file. Handling content over the internet isv't very accessible though.

I like FooBar 2000 because it's interface is so simple. You can also
manage local libraries with it. Setting it up is kind of tedious though,
since you need to set up all of your own hot keys. I don't think it
manages podcasts for you. It does come in a portable flavor though,
which is nice if you want to run it off of a USB drive or SD card.

I still pull up WMP occasionally, but that's mostly just to rip CD's.

Hi all. I'm toying with the idea of experimenting with various media
players. Unfortunately not all are worth the trouble and still others
 are
not accessible with JAWS. At this time I use both VLC witch does a good
enough job and WMP which is fine but rather restrictive. I'm
 referring here
to playback and neither ripping nor burning as I use Nero express for
burning, and now and then Express burn. For ripping I use CDEX which I
like. I used to use Reel player but when I got my PC reformatted I never
did reinstall it. My question is how does Winamp compare with the other
media players I've mentioned? I have never observed this player being
 used
nor of course tried it. Is it accessible with JAWS 12 and or do you need
scripts to access it's functions? How is the playback quality and
 response
time. Sometimes the latest version isn't the best version so in your
opinion, what version is the most successful? Finally, what other
 players
would you recommend, free or otherwise. The important thing is ease
 of use,
it is of little use if the sound quality is the best in the world but
 if you
can't use it with a screen reader then it is a waste of time. All
 comments
will be welcome and read. Walter.

I'm not sure what OS or screen reader is being used in this case, but
clicking on the header for the name column in Windows Explorer (or
probably most any application) should also take care of this. I would do
this with JAWS in Windows XP if I wanted a Z to A sort instead of an A
to Z sort. Clicking on the name header will toggle this back and forth.

No, you'll have to use Firefox or Internet Explorer to download the .rar
file just like you would any other file. Click on the link to download
the file, make sure you go through the dialogs to have the file saved
and know where it is going to be located on your hard drive. Then you
can use 7-Zip to extract the files from the .rar file. You can start
7-Zip and then point it at the .rar file and do the extract. I don't
have the exact instructions at the moment. I think 7-Zip will also place
an entry in your File pulldown in Windows Explorer, so you can also just
find the file in Windows Explorer and then use the context menu or the
File pull down to extract the files.

Re: turning off actions when a cd is inserted

2011-10-11 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't have Windows XP anymore, but on Google, I found the following
web site, which seems to have the steps you need to do this:
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000130.htm

 Hello, Listers,

In Windows XP, how do we turn off actions when a cd is inserted.

I do not want to be asked if I want to burn a disk nor anything else when I
put a disk into a drive.

I hunted through the Control Panel and in Windows Media Player but couldn't
 find anything that seemed relevant.

I thank you for any help with this.

I'm not sure what format these DVD's would be in, but according to the
 features page at http://www.dvdae.com/dvdae/features:

 Support all DVD audio formats

DVD Audio Extractor can decode all the audio formats available on all
DVD-Audio and DVD-Video discs: MLP (Meridian Lossless Packiing), LPCM

What are you giving a shot? BTW, it would help if you included the
 message you were replying to.

I think it's already been mentioned but I use DVD Audio Extractor
 from
http://www.dvdae.com/ to rip the audio from a DVD. It's accessible
 and
easy to use, but not free. It does have a 30 day free trial though.

I suspect he's also using some wireless headphones to transmit the sound.

Do you mean that your transmitter has a speaker? So you can hear the
Jaws voice, regardless of where you are?

 Many thanks! Vicky

 Subject: Freedom From The Computer

 Hi Listers,

A few years ago, I decided that since I was using Jaws and had no need
for the screen, why should I have to be tied to the computer to use
the computer. Here's what I did. I connected an FM transmitter to
the sound card of my computer and now use a small FM radio or my Sansa
mp3 player which is tiny and equipped with FM to hear Jaws or anything
else from the sound card. Then I bought an RF wireless keyboard with
a range of a hundred feet or so. The keyboard is small and light and
with a transmitter built in. The keyboard's receiver plugs into the
USB port of my computer. With this combination, for probably the last
five years, unless I have to load a disc or do something physical on
the computer, I compute wherever I want from bed, to the living room,
 to the kitchen, etc.

My only problem is that because it's an RF keyboard, I sometimes have
to physically adjust the keyboard receiver's little antenna at the
computer depending on where I am in the house. So here's my
question. I haven't done anything with Bluetooth and I know some of
you are much more knowledgeable about this technology. Is anyone
doing the same thing I'm doing with Bluetooth? I think I need a
longer range, Class 1, wireless Bluetooth keyboard. Does anyone know
where I could buy such an animal? There seem to be plenty of infrared
or short-range wireless keyboards out there but the first question
from well-meaning sighted computer people is, why would you want a
wireless keyboard anywhere too far to see the computer screen,
grin. Of course the answer is that you probably wouldn't unless you
were a visually impaired person using a screen reader so it's kind of
a niche problem. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.
