A word regarding Airfoil

2017-01-26 Thread Dane Trethowan

Hi!

List members will be aware that I purchased both Google Chromecast II
and Google Chromecast Audio9 devices and I'm very happy with both.

What I didn't know was that Airfoile For Windows - at present - doesn't
stream to Chromecast Compatible devices of which there are many now
including some of the latest Televisions and speaker systems.

I wrote to the company who develop Airfoil and they assure me that the
streaming of audio content to Chromecast devices is coming to the
Windows version of airfoil shortly and that day can't come quickly
enough as far as I'm concerned, Chromecasts are incredibly nifty devices.

There is a Chromecast Ultra device available but I felt no need to buy
one of these as its only advantage would appear to be the handling of 4K
HD pictures.

The Chromecast Ultra does have an Ethernet port on the power adapter
which you very well may need if you're planning to use 4K streaming as
some Wi-Fi connections may not have the grunt to power the bandwidth
needed for this type of bandwidth hungry content.

2016-10-29 Thread Dane Trethowan
I’m very much looking forward to trying this new version of Airfoil for Mac
given its extra abilities available now to stream to Chromecast compatible
devices.
I would assume that a similar update for the Windows version of Airfoil will
follow before too long.

Airfoil For Windows

2016-08-14 Thread Dane Trethowan

Hi!

I seem to recall a fello list member having some issues with Airfoil.

A new update has just been released it seems so perhaps that list member
- if he hasn't already done so - might like to apply the Airfoil
Software Update now on offer.

This is easily done, launch Airfoil and Airfoil should tell you if an
update is available for download, if not then go to the Hlep menu and
select Check For Software Update.

Okay you’re going to have to do this search on spec meaning that you may not
come up with a result to solve your problem immediately, you may have to browse
forums a little or vary the search request.

Go into Google and type in the search box something like airfoil transmission
problems and see what you get.

You can vary your search if you like by typing something like airfoil VLC
transmission problems.

Let me know how you get on.

Hi!

easily so decided to completely reinstall which wasn't a difficult task
in itself.

So now I have Windows 10 up and running again so now to the annoying

I won't be reinstalling iTunes and that's not because of iTunes itself
which is a nice piece of software but I myself have no need for iTunes
these days, more important in the audio side of things was the VLC Media

If you have some Bluetooth or AirPlay device about and you wish to

The accessibility of Airfoil has come quite a long way since I started
using the Windows version, you can use the tab key to move between the

have its own panel where you can turn transmission of a stream on and
off, adjust the volume of the output and so on. The buttons aren't
labeled but they'ear easy enough to work out.

The bigger problem is entering one's licence key, it can be done but
you'll most likely need to use the JAWS Cursor or WE Cursor to find
where the information should be entered.

So what can you stream using Airfoil? Pretty much anything that exists
on your computer, capture an Applications audio for example or capture
the output of a sound device or TV Tuner.

So now to Bluetooth and the ability to handle Bluetooth is a recent

I've not experienced anything like this so can't comment except to say
that on the Airfoil web site there are heaps of troubleshooting tips so
you might like to get your friend Google onto this as I've done in the
past when I've had Airfoil issues.

Again, make sure your firewall is allowing Airfoil to have access to all
the resources it needs.

You’ll just have to test things out for your particular system, press tab to
move to each button and then press the spacebar to activate that button, I know
its an annoyance but that’s exactly what I had to do to learn the layout of the
thing.

Now the buttons will be obvious as you test, one will minimise Airfoil, another
exits Airfoil and another brings up the source list, these are the devices you
can capture sound from to be streamed to your Airport Express or whatever.

Another thing you’ll have to possibly look at is your Firewall, Airfoil
probably won’t be able to transmit to your Airport Express until your Firewall
allows it to do so, in which case Airfoil will probably report an error message
and your Firewall - depending on what you’re using - may come up and ask you if
you wish to allow Airfoil to connect to your network or similar.

Yep certainly.

You stream Winamp to your Airport Express by first running Airfoil and
then pressing the "Source" button, its identified by tabbing to it, its
about the third button along and your screen reader should announce
"Toggle" as well as "Button", press the button with the Spacebar and a
list will pop-up of all the physical sound devices and software you can
capture the sound output from, Winamp should be amongst these but if it
isn't then move to "Choose Other App" and select Winamp From there.

Next press all to bring up the menu system and press T for Transmit,
select Airport Express and start streaming.

Re: Rogue Amoeba | Airfoil: Wireless audio around your house

2016-07-16 Thread Dane Trethowan

Hello Dane
I am sorry for asking again but for some reason I get no sound on my hifi. I
can streme via itunes, so the problem must be with airfoil or winamp. In
airfoil I tab and I hear that the device is the express and another tab shows
the volume as 100%. Is there perhaps something in Winamp I should set or if you
do not use winamp, can you suggest another player?

Yep certainly.

You stream Winamp to your Airport Express by first running Airfoil and
then pressing the "Source" button, its identified by tabbing to it, its
about the third button along and your screen reader should announce
"Toggle" as well as "Button", press the button with the Spacebar and a
list will pop-up of all the physical sound devices and software you can
capture the sound output from, Winamp should be amongst these but if it
isn't then move to "Choose Other App" and select Winamp From there.

Next press all to bring up the menu system and press T for Transmit,
select Airport Express and start streaming.

To put it into perspective - and you'll see this on the Airfoil page - Airfoil
Speakers transfer your Android device into a speaker so you can plug it into
your Headphones, into a dock or whatever and have your audio streamed in
Lossless quality sound to the device from your Windows PC or Mac using Airfoil.

I use something called Allcast here which streams to Apple TV and DLNA devices
but I don't think it handles AirPlay directly and I really must find an App
that does handle Airplay myself so I'll take a look around later on and let the

Re: Airfoil.

2016-04-06 Thread Dane Trethowan
I'm not saying there is or there isn't but Airfoil Speakers won't help
you one little bit if that's what you want to do.

To put it into perspective - and you'll see this on the Airfoil page -
Airfoil Speakers transfer your Android device into a speaker so you can
plug it into your Headphones, into a dock or whatever and have your
audio streamed in Lossless quality sound to the device from your Windows
PC or Mac using Airfoil.

I use something called Allcast here which streams to Apple TV and DLNA
devices but I don't think it handles AirPlay directly and I really must
find an App that does handle Airplay myself so I'll take a look around
later on and let the list know what I find.

2016-03-02 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

Other list members would know that I've been using Airfoil for Mac and
Windows now for a very long time and I often post Blog entry's from the
developer here.

This entry is of particular interest to those who have a Google Chromecast
or Chromecast audio unit who are thinking of using Airfoil to stream to
their Chromecast product and why not! Airfoil already streams to Bluetooth
and airplay devices so streaming to Chromecast devices is a logical step
forward though - as you'll see in the entry - Airfoil isn't quite there yet
but at least Chromecast hasn't been forgotten and neither it should be as
its one of the ever expanding streaming methods of uaudio/video given the
price of the units etc.

Hi Dane

Can Airfoile capture the output of a screen reader like Jaws or Voice Over as
well as the music? I often use a wireless keyboard in a different room from my
PC and get the audio output on an old-fashioned wireless radio speaker. I'm
wondering if I could replace with an airplay one.

Airfoil has been with us for quite a few years now. Put simply Airfoil allows
the computer user to capture any sound source and stream that source to
multiple devices around the home.

You could for example use your favourite Internet browser to navigate to your
favourite radio station, capture the audio and stream it to your AirPlay
compatible speakers or AVR Receiver, another computer or Smartphone running
Airfoil Satellite etc.

Now Airfoil is smarter than ever giving the ability to transmit captured audio
to Bluetooth devices such as Bluetooth Speakers and headphones.

Not only can you capture running Apps on your Windows PC you can also capture
the audio from Physical devices such as the line-in source of a sound card and
so on.

For those who like me have owned Airfoile for quite some time a havily
discounted purchase price for an upgrade licence is available.

Hi all

I like AIrfoil a lot and one day might try it using Apple TV to transmit the
stream from my Mac running AIrfoil. Ah, so the white noise is mixed in with the
stream then. The overlaid got a little confusing for me, meaning it will
either modulate or somehow corrupt the stream so that it's garbled to say the
least. For the benefit of the hard of hearing, is the white noise loud enough
to be a motivation to rush to your device(s) and stop the stream quickly? Sorry
if this may sound stupid, but in case time gets the best of me and the ten
minutes has way, way past. I did pay for Airfoil 3 a while back, but I think
will pay again to upgrade to 4, but not without trying it with Apple TV first.
Anyway thanks for any responses on this.

Anyway worth the $8 from Google Play, you can get a demo version to try,

I'm using the latest updates for Airfoil For Windows, haven't used the

Airfoil is an App you can use to stream audio sources from your computer

As well as being able to control Airfoil and the audio from your
computer you can use IOS/Android Controler Apps from mobile devices to
do the job.

Okay foks, here's an accessibility enhancement in Airfoil
For Windows I've been waiting for, I've written to the
developers about the issue of selecting the target for
transmission of input source for quite some time.

Up until recently the only way you could select a target was
to take pot luck by tabbing around the screen or moving the
mouse, pressing a button and hoping for the best.

Some Screen reading software such as WE allowed labeling and
customisation of the buttons but this didn't seem to work
all that well but it worked well enough in most cases.

Now output points such as Apple TV'S, Airport Express units,
Iphones, Ipads and other computers running the Airfoil
Speakers application are listed in the menu which is
accessed by pressing the Alt key, select the device you
want to transmit to, wait a couple of seconds and
transmission of your selected source starts. Conversely if
you wish to stop transmission, select the device from the
menu and press return, transmission of audio stops.

Under new versions of Airfoil, you can transmit your source
to multiple devices or instances of computers/Iphones/Ipads
running Airfoil Speakers on your network.

Airfoil for Windows again

2011-06-29 Thread chris hallsworth

Hello all.
I have enquired with the company Rogue Amoeba about the noise that is
overlaid on all transmissions longer than 10 minutes. You are listening
out for a white noise type of static.

This is of course if you are using the demo.
Also to let you know I have downloaded and installed the beta of the
next major release, version 3. So I will give feedback to them regarding
accessibility.

Chat soon.

I forgot to mention it allows you to wirelessly stream audio from one
device running Airfoil Speakers or an Apple Airport Express or Apple TV
to the computer where Airfoil is installed and running. Neat if you want
to broadcast your music collection or audio books around your house.
Like I say the trial is fully functional however noise is overlaid on
transmissions longer than 10 minutes. The cost is $25 and you can get it
from www.rogueamoeba.com.

Happy streaming!

You won't need a cable at all. Just download the free Airfoil Speakers

and audio will pipe, or be sent to your iPod Touch.

Hope this helps.

Making Airfoil accessible

2011-05-22 Thread Dane Trethowan

Hi!

I've written about Airfoil on list before so just to summarise, Airfoil
is a piece of software which allows the streaming of audio/video from
the computer it is running on. This content can then be received by
another computer or IOS4 device running Airfoil Speakers, an Airport
Express, Apple TV and so on.

The Airfoil software for the Mac is accessible right out of the box but
the same cannot be said regarding Airfoil for Windows.

I have found ways with Window-Eyes to make the software usable and I did
this by reclassing the custom controls to Trackbars, now when you
use the Tab key to move about the Screen Reader will tell you where
the focus is.

Suppose for example you have Airfoil Speakers running on your Iphone and
you're tabbing around in Airfoil on your computer, WE will announce your
Iphone by the name you've given it in Airfoil Speakers on that device,
at that point just press the spacebar and transmission of the
audio/video from your computer is started to your iphone.

The source menu is perfectly accessible and you know when focus is there
so you can set the source of audio/video to be transmitted.

I know a lot of you use JAWS, not sure of procedures here as I don't use
JAWS though I'm sure that JAWS users will be able to adapt what I've
written to suit their needs.

You can download a trial of Airfoil and Airfoil Speakers from

You can't send the signal directly to a FM radio, you need an Airport Express,
but what you need is an aux input on your radio or a piece of software for
another computer so the Airport Express can pick up a signle and play it on the
device you want. For example, I have a bose wave system in my kitchen and a
bose sound dock in my livingroom. I found some Airport Expresses cheap enough
for me to buy a couple. I put one in the kitchen and one in the Livingroom. I
hooked the one in the kitchen to the aux on my wave system and the one in the
livingroom to the aux on my sound dock. I also have a windows pc in an office
and on it I have a piece of free software called Airfoil Speakers. Now my main
computer is in the den along with a router. If I want to listen to say a
football game or a podcast or something in any of the other rooms I mentioned I
just bring up what I want to listen to on the main computer and through Airfoil
route it to where ever I want it to go in the other three rooms.

airport express and airfoil was question about ccrane transmitter

2010-01-09 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi Everyone!

Upon reading other posts here there seems to be quite some confusion as to what
I'm talking about, perhaps I didn't explain it correctly so I'll give it
another try.

The original question was from a list member regarding volume levels for his FM
transmitter and I suggested an Airport Express as an alternative, other people
have suggested other alternatives.

Now I'm not exactly sure what people are thinking here because an Airport
Express really has nothing to do with Itunes, yes! you can use Itunes with an
Airport Express but more of that in a moment.

An Airport Express is in fact a small Wi-Fi base station which can be used that
way or an extension to a network, i'll give the web site address out later so
you can find out more information about its network capabilities suffice to say
that its incredibly versatile.

Anyway, the Airport Express is a box about 3 inches square that plugs into the
AC power, it has 2 sockets on it, one being a 100MBPS ethernet socket and the
other being a 3.5MM analogue/optical digital audio out jack and here's where
the fun starts, you can stream to this Airport Express and by using the audio
out jack, have your audio piped to whatever device you prefer, a set of
computer speakers, the aux in of a boom box, the digital in of a surround-sound
system etc.

Now back to Itunes - which incidentally the blind can use on both Windows and
Mac machines without sighted help - it will detect these Airport Express
modules, in fact you can have more than one in your system, I have 3 and each
is in a different room connected to different audio devices so Itunes can
stream your audio to these but it doesn't stop there so now we come to the
software Airfoil.

Airfoil takes or rather Hijacks the audio source of applications - say Winamp
or Windows Media Player - and streams this to the Airport Express or to a
separate software application called Airfoil Speakers, this software is used on
another computer somewhere in the house thus turning it into a pair of remote
Speakers.

So that's about all for my explanation and I hope I've painted a better picture
but as you can see, the Airport Express has several great advantages over FM
transmission which is why I opted for it in the first place, no interference
problems, crystal clear sound, you can transmit surround-sound audio if you
need to and so on and the price of one of these things? Well I don't know what
the price of the Ccrane transmitter was but I'd be willing to bet the Airport
Express would be about the same price.

You can find out more about Airport Express at
http://www.apple.com/airportexpress and yes, its not computer specific meaning
that its a network device so you can configure it with whatever operating
system takes your fancy.

For more information on Airfoil for Mac and Windows go to
http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/mac/ this company also make a nice product
called Radio Shift but more about that in another post.

Cheers

Let me see if I have it correct then:

You should be able to connect this device to the network socket of your
computer, lay network cables and then connect the digital output to either a
digital input of an audio system or to a separate digital to audio converter
on your system?

Re: airport express and airfoil was question about ccrane transmitter

2010-01-09 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hello Brett and list: Yeah..that's how I use my transmitter (I haven't read
books there)..but often times, if I want to listen to WSM while taking my
shower, I bring the stream up on the computer; then turn on this little
dinky clock radio I have in the bathroom! But hey..am sure other people
read books (or listen to the paper)..while in the bathroom; why not!
