I have a MiniMoog emulation in pd, but I've been sitting on it for years ...
just haven't been abel to add the finishing touches. I recently brought in the
bandlimited oscillators in rjlib and it sounds really good now. It's not a
perfect emualtion, but more in the same spirit with the same controls.

I have the code for an ARP Odyssey that still works and it even has midi
working. So it might be a nice starter project, especially if i can export it
to a ipad/iphone.

I guess i am just looking for some more in-depth examples to digest before
i get cracking

Hello, i switched to OSX and have an example of libpd and a sine tone on a

i followed this blog post successfully

Does anyone have any other examples of pd providing other sound for Unity? I
would like to see if pd can be used to provide the full audio part for a game

Yes both adc / dac are working:

You can load a sample in a AudioSource, this will be the ADC signal
You can make a patch with a DAC, this will be the AudioListener

Communication from Unity - PD is working
Communication from PD - Unity is working

Loading externals are working too. But what I do is to compile the
external with libpd and call it in setup(). I have been using comport
for communication between a microcontroller and Unity:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVlGEmsO0Ps

Right now:
Unity 3.5 / Unity 4
OSX (Unity PRO)
Windows 32bit (can be run on 64bit)*
Android

Coming eventually:
iOS

*I have been able to use the indie/free version of Unity 3.5 on
Windows when placing the libpdcsharp.dll at the right place. Didn't
test with Unity 4. Since Unity4 you can build for Android even with
the indie version.

Not implemented, spatialisation when using a DAC. ADC / AudioSource is
handle by Unity (you need to toggle 3D sound).

Are you using the libpd master branch? Can you use the pd_045-4 branch as that
will become the new master soon. The change is that I added hook setter
functions and updated all of the wrappers. I wasn't able to test the csharp
wrapper, so if that's what you're using on Windows it would be nice to double
check that it's working.

Off the top of my head accelerometer data is packed in to a x y z list, and

[PD] smooth random numbers

2014-02-22 Thread Pagano, Patrick
Hello

i have asked this is a few different ways and experimented but i am wondering,
how does one create smooth random numbers that flow between each number
instead of hoping from number to number?

I would like to start creating random midi values from 0-127 and pick each
number say every 5 second and have each random number then flow to the next
smoothly. so if say the first number is 60 and the second is 85, the data
stream would flow from 60, 61, 62 63.until it reached 85 and then from 85
smoothly to the next random selection.

I have not had the luck i was hoping with Vline, someone suggested an array but
i am hoping someone might share some math or abstraction so i can get a handle
on how to implement it

thank you

Patrick

[PD] vst~ for OSX, any update?

2014-02-12 Thread Pagano, Patrick
Hello

I am asking if anyone has had any success on updating the vst~ object for OSX.
I would really like to use some simple vst~ plugins with GUIs inside of Pd, but
i cannot seem to get the GUI window to pop up still. Pd sees all the
information, ins/outs and methods but cannot display the GUI interface so it
seems. I am building and extension to the Console abstraction Leonard made some
years ago and i would like it to have interchangeable vsts for
REVERB/DELAY/FILTER AND a wildcard effect.

please help

i also know the -listdev option to Pd, but this only list devices in console,

I observe this on Linux (both Ubuntu 12.04 64bit and Raspbian (kernel 3.10.25+)

But it seems to be OK on MacOS with pd 0.45-3.

I'm giving a presentation this week. In a way, it's a counter argument to a
recent presentation on Max/MSP. One of the things that I want to highlight is
the open sourceness of PD. libpd presents a very good argument and I'll be
highlighting a project I was involved with that produced an IOS app that used
libpd as the audio engine. Is there anything else I should be considering
besides the obvious points of open source being open source. Concrete examples
of PD's open sourceness trumping proprietary technologies?

Thanks,

pretty much, the mackie c4 looks ideal, except for a couple of things that

i tried lemur and all that too, but i just can't get into the touch screen

Perhaps we can ask Miller to compile a new one against 10.7/10.8 or 10.9
I have a great old abstraction by Leonard Swiezinski called called console

love to include a few VSTs for a fancy effect bus.
I can't use Windows or Linux because the project will include a MAC only

[PD] Japanese PD books

2013-11-02 Thread Pagano, Patrick
Hello

I was browsing on Amazon and I found quite a few books in Japanese written
about pure data. I am wondering if there are any translations of these out
there? I am currently reading the multimedia programming with pd and it seems
nice so far but I am hoping and wondering if there is a more GEM focused book
out there?

Also, I wanted to pose/ask this question again regarding sequential patch
playback. Peter and Marian's extended view toolkit kind of do this a little bit
but I am wondering again if there is any way to configure or program pd to play
a patch and then transition to another patch so that pd may be used for
theatrical performances. I currently use Isadora for this but I still wish I
could use pd for this purpose. I have fashioned playlist- but i would love to
go from one Gem scene to the next with timed fades. I kind of can achieve to
with pd syphon on Mac but my main theatre computer right now is a windows
box.

Does anyone share this desire with me?

I found the same behavior, Marian and Peter wrote some amazing software there
but you have to have a really fast graphics card for some of the fancier
modules. Go with the one that delivers for you. 22 is really nice as I recall.

here, the shader is only used to change texture coordinates and do soft-edging.
In both cases, ev_pro_22 or ev_pro_22easy, I send a texture ID. So the chain
with ev_pro_22 is not the one that does the work from movie to texture (the CPU
part), it's done once by another chain.
For what I understand, using the same texture ID for different gem chains
avoids using the CPU for each chain, you use CPU only to transform your image,
movie or whatever to a texture (which is stored in the GPU memory), then each
chain links to the texture ID which is the position of the texture in the
graphic card's memory. Am I wrong ?

For instance, in the same work I do texturing on 200 pmpd masses linked to a
gem chain. So 200 independant rendering chains, one texture, and this works
without a problem. And there's no shader involved

Moreover, the texture used for masking is a only one black pixel (see the
masking example), so how come this could be so heavy ?

I think ev_pro__22 uses OpenGl shaders so it uses the GPU in the graphic

efficient, but it works in older machines.

Great piece of software the extended toolkit view...

LGPL, but the license in the source headers is GPL and the following is printed

this was the subject of a long discussion on this list and discussions with

replace GPL by LGPL and took some time and care about it so I assume they did

here's what happened, in summary, from my foggy memory:

i contacted the original author of expr, Mr Yadegari, and explained
the situation that expr was in a strange limbo between vanilla pd and
pd-extended. It's included in vanilla, but there license is
 different, etc etc...

When we looked into it, we found that the original license for expr
was in fact LGPL, not GPL, as stated in the pd documentation. (So,
as Iohannas suggests, a bug report might be a good idea)

When i asked about the possibility of changing to the pd style BSD
license, Mr Yadegari was totally fine with that, and said that is
 what he had wished anyway.
However, the expr license was now under control of the university,
and i would have to contact the relevant people to ask about changing
 the license to BSD.

In the meantime, i had called Apple, and asked about the legality of
GPL, and they said GPL was not permitted, as you need to release the
code with the app, and they don't have that facility built in to their app
 store.
Then when i asked about the possibility of LGPL, which doesn't need
the source code included in the package, they sent me from person to
person, and i never got a straight answer... basically they told me
that if i wanted to use LGPL, i would have to hire a lawyer to speak
 with their lawyer.

Soit seemed like changing the expr license to BSD would be the
 best option.
I contacted another developer who Mr Yadegari referred me to, and we spoke
about the possibility of changing the license. He said no one had touched
expr for years, but couldn't see any reason why not to change it. He
said he'd need to check with the relevant department at the
university, and with the other developers who had taken on the caretaking of
 expr.

And then, university summer holidays started, before i could go any
further, and i never heard back again about the license.

So, as far as i understand, the expr developers i spoke to all seemed
fine with the idea of BSD, but we just never got as far as getting
everyone together and making the change.

there has been extensive discussion on this with the original

 been re-licensed under the LGPL.

Cheaper and simpler than talking to lawyers would be simply to write a new

Re: [PD] Pure Data and Korg Monotribe

2013-08-30 Thread Pagano, Patrick
Here is a working patch for what i am fooling with.
I tried drunk from cycline and it's nice but it's not really what i would like
to do, so i am hopeful i am more clear in my explanation someone might be able
to point me in the right direction.

I would like the random numbers to move say from 10 and then the next random
number is 20, instead of hoping right to the value twenty next, how could i
program pd to give the value 10 and then 11,12,13,14 etc. until it gets to 20
and then if the next value was 14, move slowly form 20 to 19,18,17,16,15,14.
but slowly like on a ramp so that the values are moving numerically to each
next random number intsead of jumping right to them.

I hope this is clearer. I am wondering if a line or a delay would be the proper
way to program it?

help please

cheers~

Patrick

'line' should do the trick: you can for example connect a [pack f 200]

more interessting to randomize the 'slide time' too...

Hi Folks,

I have been trying for quite a while to get my Raspberry Pi to work in full

using a Behringer UCA222 for audio. When I change the USB speed down to 1

plugged in. If I unplug the soundcard the Pi will boot but as soon as I plug it
in the Pi crashes. Has anyone got any suggestions about why this is happening?

Thanks,

Thanks both for these comments. There will at some point be on the website the
set of works produced as part of the Integra Project, once these have been
updated to the latest version of the software.

However, I do also think a demo project is a good idea.

In the interim -- there is a set of demo blocks that come with the
application. Just drag a block from the Block Library on the left to a track.
E.g. if you drag SoundfileLoop you should within a few seconds hear an
african drum loop start.

 Hey Patrick,

I guess the standard most up to date raspbian wheezy is the best place to
 start.

For me what's worked best is to find a super-minimal install and then build
 requirements on top of that.

With the project I'm working on atm I couldn't get my pmpd patch to even run
with the standard install (there is quite a lot going on though). Now the
patch runs fine with a whole heap of other stuff on top of that (2 sensors, 6
channel soundcard etc). My htop reading fills me with joy-I think there's
about a dozen processes including 3 shells.

As it's a rev1 board I built a system on top of the hexxeh image (same guy
who's done the 'rpi-update' program for updating the firmware. My
understanding though is that with rev2 boards don't do it.

The one that I've been keeping my eye on, and they've just released a brand
 new version is Mobius
 http://moebiuslinux.sourceforge.net/
This is what I'll be testing out for my rev2 boards.

There's a whole host of conflicting info re RPi's out there, particularly
overclocking to squeeze every last morsel of goodness out of them. Us audio
bods have specific needs - like I want mine running flat out all the time
without blowing up and there's a big difference with that to someone who very
occasionally pushes their RPi and wants to tell everyone that there way is
 the best.

My own take has been to only use smaller cards (4gb) from reputable sources -
very hit and miss though, very definitely YMMV

This has been useful for tweaks:
 http://blog.extremeshok.com/archives/1081

 Indispensable resources for audio:
 http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=286064#p286064
 http://wiki.linuxaudio.org/wiki/raspberrypi

Don't do video so can't help on that front but my friend was just showing me
his rpi xbmc setup which was really good so must be well-doable.

And of course there's a ton of stuff on our lovely list.

 Best of luck,

 Julian

Why don't you just use millers images with vanilla or the satellite-ccrma
 with pd-ext, both linked here:
 https://puredata.info/docs/raspberry-pi

Both images are very close to 8GB (though much of that is empty space) ...
the CCRMA one did fit my SD cards but the pd-la one was slightly too big.

The raspbian wheezy image will fit on a much smaller card, and will expand
its partition to fill what you have, and is working nicely here. Clearly not
all 8GB cards are quite the full 8GB.

 http://downloads.raspberrypi.org/images/

If you try the standard debian armel it will probably work, but is compiled
for a simpler CPU without hardware float (ARMv4 rather than v6), and will be
 slower.

as a quick fix, you could copy the m_pd.h to somewhere in your standard include
path, i.e. to /usr/local/include

these are the directories where configure looks for m_pd.h apart from the
standard include path:

$prefix/pd/src
$prefix/src/pd/src
../src/
/usr/local/include/pd/

Where $prefix is what you give configure as:
configure --prefix=...

I wonder if there is a canonical way to do m_pd.h discovery these days.

[PD] MobMuPlat for Ipad and expr~ woes

2013-03-18 Thread Pagano, Patrick
Hello

I am trying to get a synthesizer patch i created onto the ipad, i erroneously
thought that if the patch i was using opened up with PdVanillaFor MobMuPLat
that is included in the release of MubMuPlat that it would work on the ipad.
And since i am not selling the application i assumed that i could use the expr~
since it is included. But now that i finished setting it up when i load the
file onto the ipad i get a bunch of errors with

expr if($f1-$f2==0, 0, 1)
error could'nt create
load_object: Symbol expr_setup not found

I know there is some issue with the license and i found this README.txt in
files i has where Iohannes addressed the issue. IS there a way for me to use
this object in this patch?

I am including IOhannes' stuff regarding hexloader

the problem
---
when dealing with abstractions and single-file externals, we have a 1-to-1
correspondence between an objectclass and a file.
examples:
the [expr] object matches an external ./expr.pd_linux
the [zexy/nop~] object matches an abstraction ./zexy/nop~.pd
general:
the object [name] matches a file name.$EXT
when dealing with externals, the name of the objectclass is also to be found
in the setup function within the external
example:
to load the expr external, Pd will look for a function
  expr_setup() within the file ./expr.pd_linux
general:
the external name has to provide a setup-function
  void name_setup(void)

this works fine, as long as there are no special characters involved:
according to the above scheme, when loading the external expr~
Pd should actually be looking for expr~_setup() within the file
./expr~.pd_linux;
unfortunately, the C-language (wherein most externals are written) does not
allow function-names to use any characters other than a-zA-Z0-9_.
therefore the name expr~_setup() is invalid;
therefore, Pd handles the case of the trailing ~ in a special way: it
actually expands the ~ to _tilde and looks for expr_tilde_setup()
general:
the object [name~] corresponds to an external name~.pd_linux which
  offers a setupfunction name_tilde_setup()
unfortunately this doesn't work well for a larger number of characters
forbidden in C-functionames.
example:
how should the setupfunction for an objectclass [~~] be named?

additionally, several filesystems have problems with certain characters.
for instance, you cannot use the character '' on FAT32 filesystems.
but how do you then create a file for the objectclass [~]?

a solution
--
one solution is to just forbid objects with weird (non alphanumerical) names.
pretty frustrating

another solution

use libraries with valid names that hold objects with weird names

a better solution

another solution is to translate the forbidden characters into allowed ones.
for instance, every ASCII-character can be called by it's name (e.g. 'a') as
well as by it's numeric value 97 (or in hex: 0x61)
the here-proposed solution is, to replace every illegal character by it's
hexadecimal representation (in lowercase).
examples:
[] corresponds to the file 0x3e.pd
[~] corresponds to the file 0x3e0x7e.pd or to 0x3e~.pd
[ab] corresponds to the file a0x3eb.pd

the same system can be applied to the setup-functions:
examples:
  [ab] has a setupfunction a0x3eb_setup()
CAVEAT:
C also forbids to start function names with numeric values.
therefore, this is a nono:
[]'s setupfunction would be 0x3e_setup() (ILLEGAL)
we can simply fix this by putting the setup() in front:
 [] has a setupfunction setup_0x3e()

implementation
--
the hexloader external adds the possibility to Pd use the proposed
alternative naming scheme.
just load the hexloader lib, and the next time you try to create the
(yet unknown) object X, Pd will also look for several alternatives
example:
  [~]
~.pd_linux (filename ILLEGAL on SOME filesystems)
~_setup()  (ILLEGAL functioname)
setup_~(ILLEGAL functioname)
0x3e0x7e_setup()(ILLEGAL functioname)
setup_0x3e0x7e()
0x3e~.pd_linux
0x3e~_setup()   (ILLEGAL functioname)
setup_0x3e~()
0x3e0x7e_setup()(ILLEGAL functioname)
setup_0x3e0x7e()
0x3e0x7e.pd_linux
0x3e0x7e_setup()(ILLEGAL functioname)
setup_0x3e0x7e()
~.pd (filename ILLEGAL on SOME filesystems)
0x3e~.pd
0x3e0x7e.pd
the hexloader will try one alternative after another until it finds one
that actually works (there is no problem in querying the ILLEGAL names,
it is just impossible to create such filenames/setupfunctions)

From the front page pf the website:

About the PD distribution: PD patches for your iOS device must be made with PD
vanilla (not Pd-extended), the basic distribution. However, in order to
simulate the app on OSX (using OSC + UDP to communicate between PD and the
MobMuPlat Editor), a few extra objects were needed, and so they've been
included in this distribution, but they will not work if used in a patch in
iOS. Also, [expr] and [expr~] do not work in the current iOS version; this will
be changed in the next update.

Ask yourself what is easier to do: Make your patch portable (not

I'm working on other elements of the next update over the next few days, so if

Subject: [PD] found how to reproduce Pd-ext 0.43.4 Tcl Invalid Command Name
error

hey,

dunno if you remember, but I still have this error (below) and now I managed to
make a small patch that reproduces it (attached).
It seems related to the Hide flag for a 2nd level nested GOP patch.

it'd be great if somebody could test it on linux and mac.
I'm on Ubuntu Lucid 10.04, pd-ext 0.43.4

how to reproduce:

- launch MAIN-graph-bug.pd
- click the bang to open a subpatch (if it doesn't at startup)
- close the subpatch
- close MAIN-graph-bug.pd

at this point Pd throws the error as below. Only the GUI freezes, the patch is
unusable and have to kill it, by closing pd.

(Tcl) INVALID COMMAND NAME: invalid command name .x996ebd0.c
while executing
.x996ebd0.c delete graph996f4b0i0
 (uplevel body line 1)
 invoked from within
uplevel #0 $cmds_from_pd

How to avoid it:

- launch MAIN-graph-bug.pd
- click the bang to open a subpatch (if it doesn't at startup)
- open the subpatch
- open the further subpatch anlz.scope~
- flag hide object name and argument
- save
-close pd
- restart the patch and the error disappear

It is worth noting that the error I get with the Xth Sense software looks
similar but has different tags (see below). And I can't reproduce this one
error using a subpatch including a graph or iem_image (which I use in the Xth
Sense)

(Tcl) INVALID COMMAND NAME: invalid command name .x9c4d3b0.c
while executing
.x9c4d3b0.c create image 900 776 -image a4304c0PHOTOIMAGE -tags a4304c0PHOTO
 (uplevel body line 283)
 invoked from within
uplevel #0 $cmds_from_pd
\

should i submit a different bug report or add to the one I did already?

thanks in advance for any hint,
this is forcing me to still use pd-ext 0.42.5 during my workshop, which is a
shame :)

Actually, that is pretty normal, as starting Pd with -stderr does not
post anything to the Pd console (which is parsed in Tcl), but to bash
(or your shell or cmd.exe).

There is an open bug related to it:

 Hello,

Definitely you don't have libftgl-dev installed.
Install it and then ./configure + make.
After ./configure, you can check if FTGL will be OK or not.

All of the Debian, Ubuntu and Mac OS X build machines have libftgl-dev

anyhow: i have an ADVC110 on my desk, and it used to work fine with Gem (just

since it really is a DV-device, you will obviously need videoDV support for Gem
(apt-get install gem-plugin-dv4l).
then it should show up as something like /dev/fw1

no, you should not need to: Gem searches for all available plugins in the
folder where the Gem binary resides.
the installed plugin will thus work for the standard Gem installation of Debian
(both Gem and the plugin live in /usr/lib/pd/extra/Gem), but it won't work
out-of-the-box for your private installations of Gem (in which case you might
want to symlink the gem_videoDV4L.so to the location of your Gem-binary)

it would also help if you could provide output of the pd-console (preferably in
verbose mode) and the terminal, when ding something as simple as:
- - start Pd, load Gem, create [pix_video]

The last stable release of pd-extended with GEM does not produce this error, so
while I am very familiar with updating my graphics driver I have to ask people
to look at how Gem is compiled for the new version. Teaching workshops or
classes with that GL error filling the Main pd window is going to panic
students and new users.

[PD] OT: vloopback

2013-02-11 Thread Pagano, Patrick
Hi

I know this is kind of OT, but I am interested if people are successfully using
vloopback on linux with pure data and lpmt or any other applications
I would like to use it with Veejay, Pd and lpmt but I am having a few issues
with setting it up

Whati would like to do is take video OUT of Veejay and into pure data and then
use lpmt to map it.

2013-02-11 Thread Pagano, Patrick
Has anyone got this to work?
I have tried many source trees of ARToolkitPlus and I cannot seem to get the
configure in the CVS of pidip to see ANY of them

./configure -with-artkp= does not seem to find it.
Have you got it to compile? Where and which version of the artkp sources are
you using?

Thanks

Re: [PD] managing freeframe and frei0r plugins WAS: pidip

2013-02-07 Thread Pagano, Patrick
One should be able to cycle through both freeframe and frei0r plugins without
having to call it specifically
Currently in Gem, there is not pix_frei0r, I would love if there was but there
are over 100 plugins and there should be a number selector to select which one
for example:
[number 1-x]
|
[pix_frei0r]
|
[pix_film]

And the same for pix_freeframe instead of for example
Having to do

[pix_freeframe bloom]

Also one of the nicest features of pidip is the porting of effectTV effects
http://effectv.sourceforge.net/

so again a [pix_effectTV], would be very desirable as well

I don't use any of this stuff, but I'm happy help make it easy to use plugins.
I imagine that pix_freeframe and pix_frei0r search the standard Pd path for
plugins, or if not, could be made to without too much work.

What are the particular issues there?

im curious because i have only used pidip a couple of times but have

Please let me know when you complete these, I would love to try them out.

Also when are you going to include mu for pd :-)

There is one help patch that I tested and it worked (albeit tracking was a bit
slow, which may be because my laptop is fairly low-end notebook/netbook). It is
fairly straightforward, though. Documentation both for pdp and pidip could use
an overhaul, though.

If you are using Ubuntu 12.04 64bit, I can send you binaries until I clean
things up. The versions I built are pdp 0.12.7 and pidip 0.12.30.
AFAICT all externals built successfully.

Also when are you going to include mu for pd :-)

That's a thought :-). FWIW, mu should work out-of-box with netsend/receive but
the texture sharing voodoo is not implemented yet...
