Great photos, some of which must have been taken with incredibly good
equipment.
Is the mistake in the caption to "Northern Lights over Jokulsarlon, Iceland",
where a couple is
mentioned as looking at the lights and I can see no people in the frame?

I saw the exhibit of the winners in Greenwich a couple of years ago and they

Re: Some Pentax sales spotted, including 70-200/2.8

2016-07-27 Thread Alex Sarbu
The HD Pentax D FA* 70-200mmF2.8 ED DC AW doesn't use the same type of
SDM micromotors as the DA*-series lenses. Actually it doesn't use SDM
at all - but DC motors. Fast, reliable.

Last Pentax lens with these SDM micromotors was announced in 2008.
Since then we had 3 K-mount "SDM" lenses, all using Tamron's
"ultrasonic"-type motors (in case of the D FA 24-70 and 15-30,
ring-type "ultrasonic" motors).

I don't think it could be accomplished through dodging alone. You wouldn't have
much color to recapture and you'd create a lot of noise. Perhaps a "replace
color" in combination with some detail creation. But my money still says it's a
composite.

Great pics. But a fork, a spoon and a moon appears to be a photoshop job. The
tree branches are seen in silhouette but the bird is nicely illuminated. By
what? Especially against the moon background, which would have required a sunny

Re: Amazon's amazing marketing!

John,

I Wouldn't buy anything serious (such as a lens) from the sellers with the
rating below 95% on Amazon... maybe 90-some, if I really needed...

89% is too low.

Just in case: check Resellerratings.com for the sellers' names. Often,
many Amazon sellers have their own store, and could be rated for those.

Regarding SMCP-FA 35mm/2.0, - I wouldn't buy that at the prices listed for
the new ones (635, 904, 999, 1862) - those are ridiculous.

If you decide to go with that one, - drop me a line, - I have one that I
barely used, as it got replaced in my bag quickly with the Limited.

So, I might consider selling mine.

PESO -- Island House.

2016-07-27 Thread P.J. Alling

I don't really know if it's called Island House, that's what I'm calling it.

I don't know if this is actually one of the Thimble Islands off the
coast of Branford, Connecticut, but there are a lot of small islands in
that general vicinity. The lighting was exceptionally harsh, which
wasn't helped by my using an ISO that was much, much, to high for the
lighting conditions.

Anyway look at it as an exercise in composition more than anything else.

Equipment: Pentax K-5II w/smc Pentax FA 20-35mm f4.0.

Right you are!
Thanks for correcting.

When I was writing that response, my own lenses (aka eyes) were wide open
and unfocused (dialted). I thought something was off, but didn't take a
careful look at Boz's page on which I was checking the manufacturing
dates.

It's the 77mm that is f/1.8.

Larry, - when I was saying I wasn't sure if Samyang lens is FF, I meant
specifically the 85-mm one.
And I do agree, that if Pentax is unable or unwilling to invest in
resurrection of older lenses or creating new ones, they could cooperate
with Samyang. There is a caveat there: some lenses designed for MF might
be hard (or even impossible) to adapt to AF without such serious
modifications that would defeat the purpose.

Cheers,

Igor

I have a Sigma 20/1.8. I like it a lot better on full frame than I did
on APS. On APS it alternated between being brilliant and annoying. On
the K-1 it is a much more interesting range. I now have the 15-30/2.8
and the Samyang 24/1.4 (albeit manual focus) so it is on the list of
lenses that I'm thinking of selling. One nice thing about it though is
that it focuses down to 1:2 magnification, so it can be very nice for
close flower shots when you want a fairly wide field of view of either
the flower or the background.

Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG HSM Lens for Pentax - New $899.00 (sold by Amazon.com)

This was close to the top of the list of lenses I wanted for APS. On
the K-1 that slot is filled with the 50/1.4. I still want it, but it's
not so critical.

Samyang lenses are reportedly good, but they are not AF. (And I don't

Some Samyang are FF. I recently picked up the 24/1.4 for night
landscapes and it is a very nice lens. If Pentax just cherry picked the
Samyang lineup, added autofocus and their new coatings, they could
instantly have a great range of lenses.

Pentax also does not have an 85/1.4, 35/1.4, or unfortunately a full
frame 50-135/2.8 which would be close to the ideal lens for a lot of my
indoor sports work. Actually, I'd be happier with about 35-40 on the
wide end, and would be able to give up a little on the long end and crop
in post.

Awesome capture! The focus appears to be a tiny bit behind the fawn
tho. My k5 does that all the time.

OK, I've had the FA24/f2.0 out for several test drives on the K1.
Works fine and it's a pleasure to have wide angle back!

PESO prove it

2016-07-27 Thread Larry Colen

You may remember my "I'll always love you" PESO from a while back. (*)
The rock has been repainted, and it seems someone added an editorial
comment:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/28473211532/in/album-72157671520645686/

C appreciated.

Technical note, this set shot with the 28-105 on the K-1. Someone was
asking about it recently, so I decided to put it on my camera and give
it a bit more of a try.
