The water taxi ride of 20 minutes across the east river to Red Hook
Brooklyn from lower Manhattan was a splendid adventure..the water was
not calmbutnot too turbulent - the small ferry was comfy... I had hoped
for a better sky on the return trip from Brooklyn.. maybe I'll do the
tripagain sometime.

The auto focus on the K-5 messed me up somewhat but the softness of a
couple of the shots was more due to my not shooting fast enough for the
amount of motion caused by the boat.

The entire trip to and from IKEA was about 4 hours at most... IKEA was
a disappointment - not my thing and the food was mediocre which was
what I really went for.. the boat trip made my day and the whole thing
was good for cardioworkout - lots of walking done..

Re: OT grid help

2017-01-12 Thread Bob W-PDML
They are not the same aspect ratio so if you scaled the picture up it would be
distorted. You will have to leave a border, or crop the original if you don't
want the distortion.

It's easier to think about it in mm. 121x178, which is a 6:9 ratio near as
dammit, and 203x254.

So I would either:

divide the smaller picture into a 6x9 grid, which is 35mm film ratio, and draw
a 6x9 (inch) grid on the sketch book,

or:

draw a 8:10 ratio frame ((121/10)*8=96mm x 120mm) on the smaller picture to
crop it as required, with a 8:10 ratio grid inside it, and draw a 8x10 inch
grid on the sketch book.

Re: The macro lens came (Venus 60mm 2.8)

2017-01-12 Thread Jostein
I just checked. One can indeed use Av as you say with adapted M42
lenses, or as in my case, adapted 645 lenses. When set to Tv mode, the
K-3ii simply ignores the setting and act as if the camera is set to Av.
Same with TAv mode.

No it's shutter priority where the camera needs information from the
lens. The only information the camera needs in aperture priority is how
much light is coming through the lens. I use Av with my mirror
telephoto lenses a fair amount of the time. It gets the exposure
pretty close... usually. If you can manually stop the lens down, and
in this case it this is the only option, as it would be with an adapted
M42 lens. The procedure would be focus and frame with the lens wide
open, then manually stop down to the aperture you want to shoot at. I
used to do that with preset lenses.

With the camera set to Av, as the aperture shuts down, the camera will
automatically set the shutter speed which my old Spotmatic couldn't do.

On 1/12/2017 2:02 AM, Jostein Øksne wrote:

So no go.

If the lens stops down as you turn the aperture ring, basically like a
preset mechanism, why not set the camera mode to Av. Then one dial

work to change shutter speed and the other to either adjust ISO or
exposure compensation. I'd use comp, could make a case for either.
Using manual exposure and the green button doesn't seem to make a lot
of
sense in this case.

There is no aperture linking at all. If you stop it down, the view

essentially you focus at 2.8, stop down to the aperture you want,
meter with the green button, and snap the pic. Its a pain, but if
your subject is static, not much of a problem. If your subject is a
bug or something more dynamic, its going to be more problematic.

Live

view is also dim when stopped down...

The focus feels smooth and just the right amount of resistance.

Tried a few pics with it and its extremely sharp. I am going to

stop-down metering does not bother me. I suppose it could get a

By stop down metering, do you mean like old m42, where you have to

stop it

Compared to every other Pentax offering, it's great. I forget, where do
you live? Is there anybody with a K-1 in your neighborhood that could
let you play with it for a while? If not, I suggest renting one for a
few days and give it a try.

Seriously though, I'd say just buy that used one with the 28-105 that
someone posted here. At that price, if you don't like it you could get
your money back on ebay (or to one of the people on this list).

Yes, Its quite expensive for an APS-C camera. I'm also not trying to
promote it, so my apologies for the video. I'm just asking around K-1
users that can basically answer the question: I hear its a lot better
for AF than my poor little K-5, but can it AF on a moving bird like
this or will it miss too much to be useful in this situation? I'm at
a crossroads once again like I was before my K-5 purchase, and at that
time, this group was very positive on it. The pic quality is great
when I make the shot, but AF is tops on my list given my bad eyesight.

That video is a damned effective promotion. It could go a long way to
convincing me to invest in Nikon gear. I'd love to couple that body with
a 135/2.0 for photographing musicians.

There are a lot of areas where Pentax is as good, or better, than Nikon
for less money, but that sort of autofocus performance, coupled with
lens selection and Nikon speedlights looks mighty tempting. It's
interesting that the D500, however, does cost more than the K-1.

Re: The macro lens came (Venus 60mm 2.8)

2017-01-12 Thread P. J. Alling

If the lens stops down as you turn the aperture ring, basically like a

work to change shutter speed and the other to either adjust ISO or
exposure compensation. I'd use comp, could make a case for either.
Using manual exposure and the green button doesn't seem to make a lot
of
sense in this case.

essentially you focus at 2.8, stop down to the aperture you want,
meter with the green button, and snap the pic. Its a pain, but if
your subject is static, not much of a problem. If your subject is a
bug or something more dynamic, its going to be more problematic.

Live

By stop down metering, do you mean like old m42, where you have to

stop it

down to meter? Or rather that there isn't a lever to stop down the

does that work in live view? My guess is that live view doesn't
