we (a group of five or six friends from many parts of india) used to
organise the earlier simpler treks ourselves. on one such trek we met a
'guide', a person from the area who know the trails inside out. now he
organises the treks for us: arranges the mules, the cook, ration etc.,
for a reasonable fee...he doesn't run a formal company, it's just an
informal arrangement. but it works.

Might be but it could also be wind noise due to the camera being mounted

Cards always sell well and most of the people who do 2D work sell them.
I don't do calendars but a few of the people in the group do and those
seem to sell well also. I've tried photo books a couple of times and at
best have broken even - its hard to get the printing costs on a small

doing one of a kind handmade books but just haven't gotten around to it.

With cards, some of the folks in the group do multi-packs which work out
well. So, they may sell card for $4 each but a pack of 6 for $22 or
something like that. We are not set up to handle volume based pricing,
if we were it would be convenient to just set up the pricing scales to
encourage folks to get the one more card.

The one problem with cards is that they intrude on small print sales. If
you are selling a 6x4 card for $4 its hard to sell a matted 5x7 print
at a price that covers materials and the time to mat it.

Can't help with card printers - I print the cards myself on my Epson
3880 using Museo Artist Card paper (B usually has the best price).
Cost per card is about 95 cents - 75 cents for the paper, 15 cents for
ink and 3 cents for the clear bag. I usually print only 3 or 4 of any
image, unless it has a history of being a good seller and then I do 5 to
7. I can never predict what will sell well or not so go for small
batches .Since its a month long operation I can monitor and restock as

This art show has been going on for years, and decided to jump in this

So I am not really expecting to sell any photos. I have to bring full

Questions

1. Any other products that sell well other than cards? (From your
experience.) Not sure I want to spend the money on making up small
notebooks, calendar notebooks, or calendars, but like to hear your
experience.

2. Anyone have any particular online card making place to recommend?

Now I have to come up with a quick portfolio, regular and artified
photographs to show to the organizer.

I'm finally getting a workflow together for making focus stacks with the
K1 in pixel shift mode: Make the exposures as raw files, process them
in Silkypix with only basic adjustments to exposure and white balance
(about all that you can do in Silkypix), stack the images in Zerene
stacker. Open the output TIFF's in Photoshop CS6 configured so the tiffs
run through Adobe Camera Raw. ACR allows for fine tuning exposure,
shadows, highlights, saturation, vibrance, and clarity - things that
Silkypix can only do crudely or not at all. And then on to post
 processing as usual.

Re: (large) GESO: another trek in the himalayas

generous words Cotty. appreciate it.

we started from an altitude of about 8000 ft, went down about 600 ft,
and then climbed non-stop to about 15,500 ft over four days. and then
the rest of the trek was in the range of about 10,000-12,000 ft. most
of us are runners (joggers)/cyclists, except for one who had a bit of a
hard time but even she managed ok in the end.

two of the guys had brought their 16-/17-year-old daughters who had
just passed out of high school, it was their first trek but
surprisingly they did better than most of us. more than the altitude,
it was the unseasonal heavy snow and the subzero temperatures
exacerbated by windchill which were tough to handle since for most of us
it was the first real experience of snow. but we survived. the couple or
three of bottles of tequila someone had thoughtfully brought along no
doubt helped :)

What a trek & the photos to showcase it! Would have loved a chance to do
something like that.

hi,

spent a glorious two weeks trekking in the himalayas. due to unseasonal
and rather heavy snowfall and subzero temperatures, had to revise our
original itinerary slightly but it was all good... :)

here is a gallery of about 50 photos (taken with the k10d (?) and the
18-135):

hope you enjoy the photos as much as i enjoyed the trek...

Yeah, the PDML bird photography seems to be getting quite competitive. Many
of the shots are worthy of inclusion in bird books.

Great shot. Love the detail.

Wish I could get that close (up).

OT: LSD in the movies

2017-05-08 Thread Larry Colen
Since there's a fairly significant Chicago contingent on this list folks
might be interested that the song Lake Shore Drive is in the sound track
for the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/guardians-galaxy-2-how-a-favorite-childhood-song-inspired-james-gunn-998415

I was also amused that David Hasselhoff has music credits in the movie
as well.

On the subject of non-sequiturs, I tried posting a link to a picture of
my friend Mohini yesterday, but I'm not sure it made it to the list.
