{S-Scale List} FNF... On THURSDAY!
Hi All You S-heads! Gonna' be out of town Friday/Saturday. Soo... thought I'd beat someone else to the punch and light off the FNF thread! Still kickin' hiney's n' taking names in regards to inventory and parts acquisitions so I can return to some projects. Received my NWSL order... sans one of two flywheels ordered. (Those awful words: BACK ORDERED!) Other parts orders still to arrive. Along with gathering parts and supplies, I have decided to also go into a find and acquire mode. Thinking in terms of the future here... anything that fits my layout theme and looks interesting: I'm interested! So far I have some rolling stock kits on my way for The Sacred S Scale Shelves. Wouldn't mind at all having a nice batch of stuff stockpiled for the upcoming retirement years. Amid all of the above I've also been digging out 3 rail straglers and selling them off. (Raisin' some Modelin' Money!!) Also mulling my motive power options in regards to model types and liveries. Lots going on... but not much time to sit and build/work. All in good time. All for now. What'cha been doin' with your S SCALE??? Andre Ming

Hi Pieter! Thanks for your input. I may have found a picture that shows the transistion from the early gray/orange scheme w/older herald to the black/orange w/newer herald. Seems to have been the mid-1950's. Here's the pic of a freshly painted early version of the later scheme The picture is is dated 7/55: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/milw/milw1603dsa.jpg Actually, I'm liking that early scheme better than the later... but it looks to have been gone by the early 1960's, which is my target era. Still haven't decided on the decals. I need pairs of decals (for two locomotives) for a road to be represented on my layout someday. Wow Bill Winans... the sewer line thing sounds like a crappy deal. NASG: I think it was a smart move on my part. We (wife and I) are seriously looking at making plans to attend the Kansas City NASG Convention in 2015. I doubt an NASG Convention will ever be closer to me than Kansas City. It will be great opportunity to further expand my horizons in S scale (that is, see new and different approaches to the hobby FIRSTHAND), as well as meet many that I've conversed with over the years, and finally, to have a chance to find/purchase S scale things that I might be interested in. Re: {S-Scale List} Re: FNF 10/4(5)/13!
Hi Dave! I've heard of others using kitty litter... but the kitty litter I've been around (we used to have a cat) would turn different shade (darker) once wetted. What keeps that from happening in model use? As for using organic materials: In previous layouts I used real dirt/etc. I would sift dried/pulverized dirt with a contraption I made using some of the wife's discarded hoisery. I ended up with a very fine textured and VERY real looking dirt. (Secured with diluted Matt Medium.) I got the idea from Dave Frary's Kalmback scenery book. (Yeah, that was a while ago.) Anyway... my biggest concern has been whether ferrous content was in the material, but a quick pass-over with a magnet will tell the tale on that one. I've already been keeping an eye out for suitable materials around the RR yards and industries where I switch. I intend to harvest raw product and use the technique again. Best time to harvest is after a long dry spell and the ground is parchment dry. One of the best places is where trucks enter/leave a location: They pound the dirt into a talcolm-like consistancy that requires minimum work to make great ground cover! An unexpected upside to such an approach is that you get subtle color variations from harvesting dirt from various locations regionally. Of course, all of the above is from my FWIW Department. Andre Ming
Re: {S-Scale List} Re: FNF 10/4(5)/13!
Regarding a fixative for scenic ground cover, boB said: I have used everything from diluted white glue to liquid latex to Future Floor Wax. Haven't heard of the Future Floor Wax approach! Does it have any shine to it??? As I mentioned previously, I used diluted Matt Medium. BUT... I wasn't 100% pleased with the results. It would leave little milky-looking residue here n' there. Not cool. When the time arrives, I will be experimenting to find a different fixative for my ground cover. Do your fixatives (note I did NOT say laxitives, NOR am I talking about afixing your dentures) leave a residue? My biggest problem is, not what I use, but not using enough of it to further my scenery efforts. LOL! Can relate! In my previous layout attempts, that seemed to be an issue, as well: The scenery never got all the way around the layout! Andre Ming

{S-Scale List} FNF 10/4/13!
Hi All! It's FNF 10/4/13! Time for us to all update what we've been doing in S scale. I'll go first: It's been a hectic two weeks on account of my wife's father's last days and eventual passing. However, among the busy schedule of late, I taken some of my time that becomes available and have been dusting off my stuff, continuing to take inventory, and getting some things headed my way so I can further projects. Such as... * Ordered a good chunk of S scale detail parts order from Bill's Train Shop for my various engine projects. * Purchased some Wiseman S scale detail parts off eBay. * Purchased the needed items from Northwest Short Line to re-power one of my Baldwin's to see if it would be worth the effort (and thus re-power them all). They run pretty darn good as is, but being a performance freak, I am wondering if I can make them even a smidge better. * Purchased CBQ In Color Vol. 3 that has some excellent KC area shots therein. * OH... and it's official now: I'm a bonafide member on NASG! I received my member's packet and THREE Dispatch issues in the mail this week. In all, things are reviving and ever so slowly I'm figuring out where I'm at in my modeling and taking steps to have the needed items in order to make some tangible progress. All from me... who's next? Andre Ming
Re: {S-Scale List} Re: Journal Bearing Castings?
Hi boB! When it comes to what I intend to use it for (modifying the AM Baldwin truck sideframes to replace the roller bearing cast detail with friction journal detail)... replacement switcher side frames won't work UNLESS it is slightly longer in wheelbase to fit the AM Baldwin. Copish? SW-1: Have considered one... but at this point have not decided to take the SW-1 plunge. Curious though, what model/mfg is it? Andre - Original Message - From: shabbona_rr Andre: There was a Type Switch engine truck casting kit back in the good ol' days. I built a set for my SW-1. I can't remember the name, now, but the late Walt Danylak was behind the effort. Maybe some of the list members have more info. Want to buy a sweet running SW-1? boB Nicholson
Re: {S-Scale List} Re: Journal Bearing Castings?
Hi Jace: You have a reason for being unclear: I didn't express myself very clearly. Actually, I was hoping for a casting of the journal box w/cover to replace the roller bearing detail on the American Models Baldwin switcher sideframes. This would merely be a cosmetic modification and not functional. I referenced an SHS switcher as a means to illustrate the journal box w/cover that I hoped to find. Does this help to better explain what I was looking for? And you are also correct in that any replacement side frames would have to be a bit longer in wheelbase than a prototype switcher truck (such as SHS used). Not noticably so, but a bit longer. Sure wish AM hadn't pitched us this truck curve on their nifty little Baldwin switcher... but it is certainly better than NO MODEL AT ALL. Andre Ming - Original Message - From: JGG KahnSr I am unclear what it is Andre is really asking about: just the bearings for the journals (which would hardly be castings, the journals might me, or even the sideframes) or perhaps replacements for the incorrect sideframes themselves, AM having used their AAR type B road truck for the S-12 rather than the correct type B switcher sideframe. Without getting out reference materials, I cannot recall whether the wheelbase/axle spacing is the same for switchers and road trucks; if so , then Locomotive Workshop offered a white-metal switcher sideframe for their diesel kits (one turned up with a Cascade drive for my second Miller Alco, making it an S-4). If not, then there would be a headache. replacing the sideframes with stretched ones. Jace Kahn

Hi George! Thanks for taking the time to reference that article. It is also posted at the NASG website under Scale. And, yes, that's the article that got me thinking about what to do with the truck sideframes on my AM Baldwins. Re: {S-Scale List} Silence can be good at times
Hi Peter: Thanks for your article and information. The NWSL motor replacement was a slight improvement, but in retrospect not worth the cost. I have quite a bit experience in repowering, and it appears to me that the the motor used is too small for the heft of an S scale locomotive and components that engine will be carrying. I suspect it will need much more torque at lower RPM than can be produced by that small motor. For example: I recall using Mashima 18 x 33 flat cans in HO GP diesels with satisfactory performance when mated to improved Athearn 4 wheel truck assemblies. In contrast, a Sagami 1630 did NOT work as well using Athearn trucks on account of the 12:1 ratios (I think that was it) in the Athearn 4 axle truck assemblies. Again, not enough torque at slow RPM. I think, ultimately, at fault is the gearing in the AM gear tower (it has the low gear). It appears from the pictures that you have the later style power truck assemblies. My box-stock AM FA also has the later style truck assemblies, but it still doesn't quite approach the smoothness of all of my S-12's. As yet, I have not set about to determine why. My FA (as does yours) appears to use the same truck assembly as my S-12's, so logic would say that my FA can be made to run as good as my S-12's with some tinkering. My AM GP9's are a different matter. They use the earlier truck assemblies and they will need to be significantly improved before I will be satisfied with them. Have you disassembled your AM FA trucks to look for obvious issues? i.e. Cracked gears, tight mesh, binding worm, etc? Andre

Time for FRIDAY NIGHT FUN!! (Yeah, yeah, so it's Saturday. Didn't get home from work until nearly 9 PM last night. I forgot about it... Hopefully, the finished S scale set will include a CBQ Blackbird switcher set with Route Of The Zephyrs/Everywhere West scheme and the block letter BURLINGTON scheme. Also arriving in the order is a set of Missouri Pacific decals in the early Jenks Blue scheme. I figure I'll have surplus decals left over (on account of a minimum order number?). Anyone interested in some of the suspected surplus sets once I know how much the sets will cost? * Getting ready to put in an order to NWSL for the needed goodies to try a repower on one of my AM Baldwins. My stock ones run pretty darn good... but after viewing a video of a repowered one, I'm at least going to try ONE to see if I can improve them, even if slightly. (What can I say? I'm a slow speed performance junkie.) Here's a link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKsOsRCGXds * I THINK I've come up with a way to attain my goal of super slow performance using a Railmaster Alco S-2 body kit. BUT... still lots to think over on this idea. * Also been kickin' around some concept changes in my layout effort that would be reflected in my modeling directions. {S-Scale List} I Dood It!
Hooray for me! After piddle-fartin' with S scale for several years now, I figure it is time to make SOME SORT of commitment to this scale, so I applied for membership with the NRA... I mean the NASG! I haven't a clue what all is included with membership, but like I said... the least I can do. Would have already paid if there was a PayPal clicker button. (Now I've gotta' remember to write out and mail the check!) OH... ... and while surfing the NASG website (NICE site, BTW) I DID note that the 2015 NASG Convention will be in (drum roll please): Kansas City. Now how 'bout that? Now for one of my Tsunami engines. What the ... NONE of my factory equipped SHS switchers w/DCC and Tsunami decoders move/function. They only sit there and make idle sounds. No functions. No throttle response. I've tried reselecting the default 003 address that is the SHS default (none of my Tsunami's have been programed past default) ... and still nothing. NONE of them work. Nothing has changed since they were left idle however many months (years?) ago. I did not program anything, or change anything... but now they don't function. Does ANY ONE have any ideas to try? Hello again boB! Well... I wouldn't say ALL the Alco's are breathing. Some of them are in the dead line and may not be revived. Have you made any progress on your Shabbona RR since I was a fixture here? Still mulling my options... but whatever is done will be after we return from Colorady. I think it would be good to do something that's not too involved. You know, see some quick gratification without weeks and weeks of small-piddly work before said gratification. (i.e. Not a good time to restart on my Baldwin projects.) Along the quick n' easy line of thought, I may weather my CBQ SW9 and/or some rolling stock. Seeing something LAYOUT READY without a large amount of time investment would be nice at this point. OH... and keep selling off my crap. Yup... just packaged the last box of 3 rail stuff for this week and it will be shipped to its new owner tomorrow. When I return from Colorady, I'm going to try to finish off the remaining 3 rail stuff... then I may start hitting the HO stuff. This first batch of 3 rail sell-offs has made a noticable reduction of the CLUTTER that I laughingly call hobby stuff in this toxic dump of a hobby room. All fer now. Hi Pieter! Thanks for the welcome! You said: Would you believe that this past weekend I had collected notes and photos from your posts (here and on OGR) about your Baldwin project? Well I'll be. Who'd a thunk it? I'm glad you can find some tid bits in my efforts to help your project along. Combined with Matt Hogan's work...snip I saw the pics in the S Scale Photo section of what Matt's doing. Nice! I like his idea on modifying the trucks. Doing that makes it a sustainable modification. In otherwords, you don't have to rely on a secondary market for a detail that may/may not be available or mfg'd any more, instead one is modifying the box stock part. I would love to be able to see firsthand how his repowered S-12's perform. My box stock one's are pretty good. I'd say they're within about 90% of my SHS switchers. (Maybe I just got some good ones?) Anyway, I would like to compare my S-12's to his repowered one. (Would prefer NOT to repower/modify the drives... but I have repowered many times in my HO past to get the performance I wanted.) ...they will be the guide for my planned modifications to an AM S-12! Oh? What roadname will your S-12 be? They're cool engines. I'm very glad AM makes them, warts and all. FWIW: Was going through my KC Lines main folder and viewing the sub folder containing the KC Prototypes. Was again wowed by the original paint scheme on the Chicago Great Western S-12's. Why... the CGW was just down the street from the Frisco in the West Bottoms! H Hope you get back on track with the West Bottoms project, and keep us all posted! Ah, my West Bottoms layout. If I can't get this little layout up and running with a semblance of scenery in: There's no hope for me. My KC Lines West Bottoms layout has FAR less construction/track laying scope than almost all of my previous layout efforts, and every one of them got to the 100% functional stage and even some scenery. Main thing is that I am still figuring out the new S scale market (think: no more SHS) and how to adjust my druthers in regards to the scope of my roster I wanted. Looks like I'll be in the secondary market for the foreseeable future. All in good time, though. Right now the wife and I are getting pumped about our upcoming Colorado vacation. Serious S scale dabbling will have to wait until I return! Andre Ming

{S-Scale List} The Wayward Son Returns?
Hi all you S-Heads! Andre Ming here. Thought I would drop in and say a big Howdy and hope all is well with each and everyone of you. My S scale sabatical may be nearing its end. In fact, if I could, I would be tinkering with Something S right now. However, I have some clutter in this hobby room to dispose of (can't see 3/4's of my layout for all the crap that's piled on it!!!), an upcoming vacation to attend to, etc, etc. Just have to wait a spell on tackling a project. I've been doing a lot of thinking about where I'm at with the hobby of model railroading, S scale in particular. I've also been giving some thought on how to re-define my goals on my little KC Lines layout in view of the demise of my main decal supplier. In fact, I have an interactive blog that I have kept running for the past couple of years over at the O Gauge RR (magazine) forums. IF you have some time to burn and so inclined, then I invite any/all that may have a passing interest to stop by and give it a browse. Input always welcome. Re: {S-Scale List} mth update
Thanks Don for your input. Dave hit the nail on the head in regards to my concerns. However, I think the underlying issue is that I have allowed this list to become a medium that doesn't relax me, instead it puts me on edge, hence my posts to this list now tend to be negative instead of positive. I'm not normally like that, and I don't like what I see happening in me. I think it's time for me to take a break from this list and hopefully one of these days, rediscover the fun that can be had in model railroading again instead of the getting tweaked about endless debating, etc, that passes through this place. But, it is not fair for me to just give a general answer like that. What would I change??? 1. speakers in our SW1 2. change F unit gear box to be like that switchers. That is the gear rotates around an fixed axle. This would eliminate 36 bearings in a ABA lashup that each one generates noise (and more friction than a delrin gear on a steel axle). 3. Change 2-8-0 locomotive drawbar post from delrin to metal. 4. Make 2-8-0 smoke unit chamber twice as deep and use a nichrome element replacing the wirewound resistor. 5. revise headlight connection from foil contacts to anything else (to make the foil contact the pads of pcb on boiler front, they added foam rubber under foil. If the smoke unit is overfilled, the foam rubber deteriorates which is not a problem unless you remove the smoke front). 6. Make gear on 2-8-0 #4 driver wider. 7 Even when Mike and I owned SHS, we were constantly re-engineering the tooling. Look at the first two runs of SW9 switchers, we retooled several aspects of the model. Or, the switches, I think they were updated with each run, So, I would applaud any improvement that Mike W and gang decide on the models we brought out. I think that would be a plus... Re: {S-Scale List} mth update
Among Mel Perry's informative post were these words: ...and switchers will be released in 2014, this is due to re-engineering mth's electronics to fit these models... Those are some of the saddest words I've read to date. No way to improve upon SHS's excellent SW/NW mechanism. Simply excellent, it was. The best one can hope for now in regards to an MTH, nee SHS, switcher is that they don't screw it up to the point it is no longer a viable model to consider as a switcher once the the all-important MTH goal of fitting in their proprietory system has been accomplished. Very disheartening to read that MTH intends to re-engineer perfection. Andre Ming

Hi Again Bob: Typically, the glue had already begun to turn loose on them, so this wasn't a problem. If one needs gauged, it shouldn't be much. You can definitely add Oddballs Decals to the list of decal makers that have gone AWOL. I suspect at the root of it all is these guys are dependant on the obsolete and quickly fading ALPS printer. I'm out a SIGNIFICANT amount of $$ to for a prepaid order to Oddballs. The failure to fulfill the order has pretty much sunk my S scale boat, for almost all the roads that I was going to model are dependant on decals available from Oddballs. I have enough Frisco engine decals to finish my Baldwin... but not enough to adequately do a KC Lines theme, to say nothing of the engine and rolling stock decals that were ordered and needed in Mop, KCS, Katy, KCG etc, etc, etc, that will never be delivered now. I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old and they have had a blast playing with them! The problem (and the S content) is that the track that comes with them is really bad. A similar problem to most of the entry level sets of the 70's and 80's that Bob Werre spoke of. The kids are playing with the trains now on the floor with no track. This has lead me down a new path to keep trains (on tracks) in front of them. I have decided to acquire and permanently attach S helper track to a 5'X8' board and get them some AF trains to play with until they are old enough for some scale equipment. I know I could use AF track, but I may want to play on the layout with some scale equipment during their nap time! While it is very good to see trains back in stores, the stuff on the shelves at the big box and toy stores just doesn't cut it for me. The quality is traded for the more affordable price point. I am glad there is a resurgence though! Growing a couple of future S scalers (I hope!), Danny Click

Hi boB: The VO1000 was about 3' - 4' longer (hood and wheelbase) than the short framed Baldwin switchers. (i.e. The DS and S series.) Also, the VO's, both the 1000 and 660, had angled fronts, not flat as all the other Baldwin switchers. Re: {S-Scale List} Real Smoke
Wow Jim. You kicked in some memory files I hadn't accessed in a long time. I now vividly recall sanding the flues when I was a Fireman/Engineer for a steam powered tourist line in NW AR back in the mid-to-late 80's. If I was firing that day, my job would be to slowly pour the sand in the funnel I'd placed in the peep hole of the firebox. If I was running that day, it was my job to really gouge on it and make the old hog suck some serious draft... which in turn would make the stack sound like a shotgun! Those summers on that tourist line were simply some of my most enjoyable railroading, ever. Steam engines are so much more interesting to run and require far more skill than diseasles. Re: {S-Scale List} Simulated Prototype String
Tsk, tsk. We RUN engines, not drive them... unless you're in Europe. Then you're a Driver and you drive a train. But over here in the good ol' US of A, we are Engineers and we run engines and trains. :-) Now, as for Alco's breaking down... I wouldn't know a thing about that. ;-) (Did I tell you about the one that exploded out the stack once? Ah well... another story left for another time.) Okay, in all seriousness: The Alco's I run daily were all made in the early-mid 60's. The fact that they are still gettin' it done in 2012 is... well... pretty amazing, really. They are some darn tough engines, built like the proverbial brick poop place. (For example, the EMD's I have run from the same vintage had plastic controls and lots of plastic in the control stands. These Alco's are all steel and cast metal. There is NOTHING plastic in a mid-60's Alco.) The Alco C420 I'm currently using on my switch job (AM #52) is a darn good engine for switching: Loads fast, stops good, pulls its guts out when I ask it to. Just today, while we were switching in the yard, the radio crackled: As soon as we could, we were on our way to meet a train and take tonnage off of it for Fort Smith. Once there and the train arrived, I got ahold of 30+ cars, many of them loads, and starting from a dead stop, got a run at a fairly formidable hill. #52 knuckled down and got with the program and I topped the hill at the allowable (20 MPH in this case). Not bad at all. In a few minutes the radio crackled again: Did you make it over the hill? (the TM knew it was going to a hard pull... figuring we may have to double into the yard.) Stormin' your way. was my response. Surprised, he said he would get his radio and meet us in the yard. Once in the yard, in about 20-30 minutes we had the train broke down and re-classified for tonight's runs. Oft times kicked cars (and cuts) would be drifting down three different tracks at the same time. Yup... sometimes I get aggrevated at these old Alco's... but really... they're doing pretty good to have been in service for nearly 50 years. Andre Ming From: Jamie Bothwell Bud, I was thinking more like good, stout string for EMDs and a sort of fine thread for Alcos. Simulates Alco's propensity for breaking down. (So I've heard. Not to argue with two guys who actually drove them!) Jamie Bothwell Bethlehem, PA

Frankly... even that idea has some merit to me now. I didn't realize I was going to become so lackadaisical about modeling when I made the decision to enter S scale some years ago. Just don't know what happened to my desire to super-detail, paint/decal/weather, etc. Still have fleeting moments that I would sort of like to do some workbench modeling... but it usually fizzles before I even get the workbench cleared off. Sometimes I think it would be great to have scale looking trains (i.e. 2 rails, scale proportions, etc) running about on a nice looking (and simplistic) layout that are much more plop n' play than the approach I've taken. Oh well. It's all good... I guess? Andre Ming
{S-Scale List} Gotta' Admit...
From The FWIW Dept: Was organizing/condensing some book shelf artifacts and tossing some old and unwanted printed matter. Ran across some old (1998 or so) S/Sn3 Modeling Guide magazines. (I was in my last years of trying to do Sn3 in the late 1990's.) Thumbed through a couple of them to see what was therein... fell upon a Des Plains Hobbies ad on the back page. Wow... therein were pictures of simple American Models engines that had be detailed with DPH details and custom painted. Two really stood out: A UP GP9 that was really nice... and a Erie-Lackawanna RS3 that was also super nice. Was amazed at the nice proportions and overall quality of the basic models themselves. The excellent details and nice paint/decal jobs were frosting on the cake. The above to say this: I'm not ready to give up on model railroading just yet. In fact, I suspect that once I'm retired (in a bit over 5 years) things are gonna' change in more ways than one. It could very well be that once I have more time (and no longer having to contend with 1:1 railroading and the side effects thereof), my desire to workbench model may return. That so... perhaps while our finances are in pretty good shape, now is the time to acquire desired pieces in advance of that time? Doubt I'll want to drop the serious bucks for multiple engine purchases once out on retirement and on a fixed income. H. Interesting thought. Andre Ming

Well... it's been a long time since I've machined (mid 70's)... but a couple things I recall: * Always make sure the bit is entering the work with the flutes spinning the correct direction. (i.e. You want the flutes to be rotating in a manner they resist the material and not grab it.) * If the flutes are loading with material, it will try to do what you're describing.
