{S-Scale List} Re: Hinged or solid points to throw bar

2013-10-08 Thread shabbona_rr

Bill:

What do you mean, when we met again! I'm still waiting to meet you and see
the Jefferson Central for the First Time! One of these days, as Pa Kettle
used to put it.

What you said about Frank's Spiral Hill is true. I always delight in reading
your accounts of the good ol' days, when you guys used to help each other dig
basements, and whatever. Seemed like someone always had (has) the necessary
skills to pull a project at hand out of the mud at critical times!

As far as switches go, I have never had a point failure since I began building
switches as I have said many times on this list and in articles. The last
article was in 1/64 Modeling Guide, where I discussed forming point and closure
rails so the throwbar would force the points apart and keep the solder joints
under pressure so they wouldn' tend to pull apart from the tension forces
created when throwing a switch. I have a #4 in the service facility at Mooar
Yard where I have done this and it is one of the easiest throwing switches on
the whole layout, because the points tend to try to center themselves when the
switch is thrown.

On my #6 Atlas conversions, replacing a styrene throwbar would be easy, if I
ever have to, which has occurred once because I was careless making it in the
first place

Incidentally it was a Spiral Hill empty hopper that derailed on the popwer
house switch last weekend. Real easy rerailing job, though.

As I've said before, on my model railroad we fix and repair when needed just
like the prototype. In recent years even Frank titman's Spiral Hill switches
would whack-out and he would cuss at them. Bert Mahr would repair them for
Frank and at times Bert said it wasn't an easy task.

But heck, that's what friends are for! Now the SPIRAL HILL isn't anymore,
only fond memories of the good old days of the gang meeting at Frank's home.
I miss it and I miss Frank in particular, his knowing smile was infectious!

Happy Smiles to you, till we meet again!

 See Ya,

  Bill (Fraley)

I soldered all my points to the throw bar and all the points were hinged
for both code 100 and code 125 rail. I made the hinges for 125 rail out of
SHS insulated joiners and for 100 rail out of PECO insulated joiners. The
throw bars were made of PC board with a gap in the copper foil. The rail
soldered like a charm to the foil. The main trick is to heat the end of the
point so that it would melt solder before making contact with the foil. The
foil delaminates if it gets too hot. Only failures were initial bad solder
joints. They held for 10 years or more. One aspect I didn't like was that
some of the point assemblies would work their way away from the hinge until
the throw ran into its adjacent tie. There was not enough movement to cause
the rail to work free of the hinge joiner; I just didn't like the unsightly
gap. I think this creep was due to the tension at the rigid joints at the
 throw bars.

Jamie:

The only switches where I soldered the point rails to the throwbar is where I
had formed the closure rails to put constant pressure on the throwbar to keep
them from stressing the solder joints and pullinf them apart. I wrote this up
in the 1/64 Modeling guide a year or so ago. I can't remember what issue.

I prefer to use jointed point rails and use screws and tabs to mount them to
the closure rails. With My Atlas #6 conversions, this is a no brainer, but with
Old Pullman #5's, the point connecting bar is mounted to the throwbar through
the center screw. The joints in the points keep them from stressing the solder
joints to the point of breaking them.

S SCALE LOCOMOTIVE SUPPLY used to have journal boxes, both friction and

They weren't (aren't) exactly correct, but that could be because of the way I

It's an EMD SW-1 that I assembled from a Locomotive Workshop kit in the late
1970's. There were a lot of complaints about Locomotive Workshop kits, usually
from people who couldn't assemble one. They were difficult, no doubt about it,
but they taught the builder a lot of skills. Mine has been running for over
thirty years, now, subject to running upgrades as time goes on. It is equipped
with a flywheel and a dual capacitor to get it over dead spots. It is a good
runner, even with its electrical two wheel pickup and return, and does a fine
job of switching The Humongous Company mill.

{S-Scale List} Re: Driveshafts slip no more

2013-09-28 Thread shabbona_rr

Excellent solution, Bill! I have done things like this in the past to eliminate
drive shaft slippage, most notably in my ALCO models RS-2. Another technique I
have used is to drill out a driveshaft socket for a press fit a 1/16 styrene
strip, then drill out the strip for a press fit on the motor shaft. Not quite
the skill and finesse you exhibit with your work, but satisfactory in
situations where the extreme stresses you mention are not present.

If you have Overland locos you have encountered the pesky plastic

The fix is pretty straightforward but is pretty time consuming. Doing this
fix on a center tower diesel means making 6 of them! I have been doing this
fix for many years now but a more powerful lathe purchase this past spring
made it easier. I can drill much larger holes with one pass. Previous
incarnations was soldering 0-80 nuts to a thin brass tube. I could not put
much pressure on the screws before it failed.

I now start with 5/16 solid round brass stock and drill to a snug fit on the
original plastic Overland parts and tap 2) 0-80 holes directly opposite of
each other. As you can see the remaining material is pretty thick. You can
really crank the screws with a lot of pressure on the shafts. I have at
times cut flat spots on the motor tower shafts.

The is an S Scale USRA pacific.

Every time I do this I think there has to be an easier way by making
something in Solidworks and getting the parts cast in brass. The solution
has not hit me yet. I know if all parts were brass it would be noisy.

I have to rebuild the truck sides on this Bachmann 4-4-0 tht suffered my ill
attempt at rewiring it. My idea now is to make a back plate from .156 x .060
styrene, drill new axle holes, then cement the pieces of the Bachmann truck to
that.

Last weekend I re-converted my AM FA2 to S-CAB. I had removed the
components before so that NWSLcould replace the stock AM motor with one
of theirs. The S-CAB components I passed around at my clinic at the NASG
convention were the ones removedfrom my FA2. Now they are back in their
 place.

 http://pmrr.org/Equipment/FA2/index_LVL2_7.htm

The NWSL motor replacement was a slight improvement, but in retrospect
not worth the cost. Of course, I didn't know that ahead of time. I
think, ultimately, at fault is the gearing in the AM gear tower (it has
the low gear). At this point in time that is beyond my capabilities (I
am not a mechanical engineer/machinist), so I will leave that issue for
my future self to tackle. I do plan to pursue super-detailing the
engines in the future (already have the B.T.S. parts).

I found the S-CAB powered engine derailing on my tracklast night. I
discovered that the headlight wiring touches the front truck gear tower,
and prevents it from smoothly swiveling, so that, I presume, is the
 cause of the derailments.

My second, now un-powered, A unit would derail as well, but for a
different reason. Upon close inspection I found that the wheels toward
the center ofthe engine floated just above the rail (i.e. the truck was
not parallel withthe rail). Looking for the cause, I found that the
mounting lug (towhich the truck is attached to the frame) wasn't
perfectlystraight, so when the mounting nut is tightened, it pulled the
whole truck out of alignment with respect to the track. Loosening that
nut solved the alignment issue (i.e. all four wheels of the truck
touched the rail), but re-introduced the wobbling of the frame/shell. My
solution was to glue a piece of styrene to the underside of the frame
where the truck gear tower just barely touches the frame when tightened,
which forces the truck to sit at a slight (opposite) angle. It was just
enough to cause the four wheels to once again touch the rails. And that
solved the derailment problems with that engine.

It was kind of fun testing that unpowered engine by having it be pulled
by my NW2. In the prototype, the FA2 engines would break down often, so
my guess is that there were times when they were indeed pulled by other
 engines.

Today I plan on fixing the headlight wire issue mentioned above, and
then doing a full charge on the engine's batteries. Then this weekend I
hope to do my endurance test (running the engine, light, on my layout
 until the battery is drained).

As Bob Werre mentioned earlier, next weekend we will be at the Galveston
show, where I hope to run the AM FA2 (A-B-A set) with a full train and
see how long its battery lasts on a powered layout (Digitrax DCC on our
 club layout).

That's what I've been up to, as far as modeling is concerned.
   - Peter.

Re: {S-Scale List} RE: My FNF 9/22/13

2013-09-24 Thread shabbona_rr
I have had such an idea in the back of my mind for years, but never implemented
it. Knowing how I work, I'd probably rip it off the first time I got up from
my so-called workbench. Last week I placed an order with Micro-Mark for a new
set of precision tweezers and a screw picker. My old one went South after
umpteen years of faithful service, and the lack of it is one source of a lot of
my problems.

I am going to try the apron idea, too, even if it only lasts until I get up
from the workbench.

Bill, boB, I have been picking small parts up off the floor for years.
  One

inquired about buying a used apron, laundered of course! They sold me one
  for
$5. I cut the tie strings off and had my wife sew on some Velcro squares at
the lower corners. I glued the other half of the Velcro under the lower edge
of my workbench. This works real well at catching the errant small parts, or
maybe about 99% of them anyway. I put a small cup hook under the bench edge
also, centered, to hang the neck loop on when I'm done with it. One does
  have
to remember to hang the neck loop before getting up and walking away
  though!
I understand jewelers have used something similar for years.

I would recommend Walther's ProtoMax. I use them consistently with no problems.
The only drawback is they leave you with money in your pocket, and that seems

My return to S scale has been off to a rocky start. Vocational time elements
mainly (plus a vacation), as well as realizing that I have too many boats out
in the stream that need to be paddled a while before I can reach the shore
with them. HOWEVER... I HAVE done some things S scale! They be:

 * Ordered/received my first two SHS rebuilt boxcars that is compatible with
my era/theme. Those are duly scale-wheeled, Kadee'd and on the layout. (Nice
 cars, BTW.)

 * Took inventory of where I'm at with my current projects. (Still need some
 tidbits to finish the Baldwins.)

 * Starting the process to amass the needed items for one of my SHS Undec
NW2's w/DCC Tsunami. Seeing as no SHS NW2 has surfaced in the CBQ
Blackbird scheme to purchase... reckon I'll have to roll my own. This
will give me a pair of CBQ switch engines to use on the layout as needed.
(I'm thinking in terms of pairs for each roadname I want to represent.)

 * Also starting to amass the items needed to paint and decal one of my
Baldwin's into a Missouri Pacific unit.

 * Started the process of cleaning up my layout, cleaning wheels, etc. Along
with this clean up I've dumped a ton of 3 rail track that was stacked on
the layout into the awaiting hands of 3 rail recipients. The few remaining 3
rail engines/rolling stock will follow shortly.

 * Plus, there have been other trivial things I've accomplished that signify a
 return.

Okay... that's what I've been doing. Who's next? What 'CHEW been doin' in S
 scale???

{S-Scale List} Re: M R Jan 1999

2013-09-08 Thread shabbona_rr
Bill:

I don't remember that PRSL article, but I may have to see if I still have it in
my -ahem- archives. I would love to see Dave Jasper's layout, too. As far as
DCC, I probably glossed over that, having decided by that early date that DCC
was not in my future or budget, that running trains would be (and continues to
be) my main focus. I just purchased an (HO) sand and bucket crane on Ebay for
my ready-mix concrete and block plant in Mooar Yard. I think it will work, I'll
know more when it comes in the mail.

I've been wanting to do an FNF on my Vari-pulse Sympatico throttle. It came
with an optional memory feature, compliments of the manufacturer when the first
one did not show up as advertised, and I've been using it to hone my switching
skills. It is different in that a new level of foresight and control is
required. What I find interesting is creating slack over the uncoupling magnets
and having the open knuckles appear almost magically as the switch engine pulls
the cut of cars away from the joint.

I have also been experimenting with rare earth magnets in spots where the
standard ceramic magnets do not always have enough strength to open unaltered
Kadee #5's, but need to do more research on that one. Where I have made them
work, they call for more engineer skill with the Varipulse throttle to spot the
coupler knuckles for uncoupling, but they do work. I have ordered some more
rare earth magnets in different sizes to carry this research further.

Other than that, things pretty quiet on SHABBONA as daily operations continue
unabated, by faulty DCC receivers or other causes. I have considered delving
into constant velocity headlights for some of my locomotives, but headlight
control on trailing units is an issue. I may have to inlist the aid of one of
our list experts for help

Welcome to the group. You'll find some of the nicest people you ever want to
meet on this site, along with some of the finest modelers and craftsman.
Sometimes we get a little testy with each other but that's because, like cats,
we're making more S scale modelers.

As far as layouts go, I agree with the idea of cutting your 4x7 piece of
plywood into two 2x7 sections. For a switching layout, I would suggest
something simple, such as the terminal area of the LOWELL SOUTHERN, which
appeared in a recent issue of the NASG Dispatch.

This would give you something to play with while you contemplate something
larger, and also give you an idea about how little it takes to build a viable
layout. My own SHABBONA RR was supposed to be a simple Class 1 secondary main
line, but has taken on a life of its own to the point of becoming almost
unmanageable.

Maybe later today I can post a photo of what I'm talking about. Maybe a photo
will explain what I cannot.

Thanks again, though

Thanks, Ken

That's what they are - ring terminals - and what I need are some miniature ones
to rebuild the electrical pickup system in a locomotive I am working on. I may
have found a supplier in Milwaukee, WI, but now it will be Tuesday before I can
contact them and find out.

Many thanks, though, from someone who finds recalling names and items a little

 Pick a size.

You may also find them at autoparts places but maybe not as small as you

If you can't find those, you could try spade connectors

I went looking on Walthers but didn't see anything. I thought Miniatronics
 would have but nope.

 Another search suggested Mouser (

 and also R/C suppliers.

 Hope this was useful.

I might have what you are looking for. I have my red CBQ NW-2 that I could
probably let go. I may have to sell off some more equipment in the near future,
anyway. As far as I know, the red BURLINGTON scheme appeared around 1958.
That's what I found out when I bought a red boxcar from Bob Werre.

I like the added operation the CBQ's KW provides, and it fits like a new
glove. However, operation is becoming so complex that I don't get to run it as
much as I would like, so I may go back to strictly CBQ interchange moves.

I had to modify the NW-2 slightly to get it to operate on DC, but I have all
the parts. Photos on request.

2013-08-29 Thread shabbona_rr
Andre:

There's been a little progress here. I sold off all the F-units, and am now an
all ALCO rroad with the exeption of EMD SW-1 #22, a CBQ NW-2 unit I picked up
off of Ebay last spring, and two and one half FP-7's for passenger service. I
say two and one half because the third FP-7 has not been fully prepared for
service, yet.

I couldn't make Scranton, so while I was crying in my beer, and between
swatting flies, I dolled up an old Marx stock car that would pucker the
smokestack on one of Bill Lane's K-4's if it stayed in the vicinity too long
(picture in the Photos section). Then I got wound up with this 19th Century
thing, but S scale 4-4-0's are made of expensive and rare unobtanium metals
which effectively shot that in the foot. Right now, I'm watching a crane model
on Ebay that might work for unloading cars of sand at my ready-mix plant at
Mooar Yard.

None of them brass EM-1's for me!

OH... and keep selling off my crap. Yup... just packaged the last box of 3

When I return from Colorady, I'm going to try to finish off the remaining 3

Thanks for the welcome! Good to see you're still kickin' n' swattin' flies!
SOOO much better to be lookin' down on the grass instead of up at it.

You're right, we could probably make the KC bottoms swing with two of us, one
of us totally incompetent anymore. Just no RCO please, and if you ever get that
motorcycle headed this way, don't go by without stopping. Don't get a whole lot
of visitors in my neck of the woods. As for as selling my home, who knows what
the future may bring. My wife was asking about Springfield MO, the other day,
and has been mentioning friends in Branson, so we may at least be in that
direction for a visit, anyway.

As far as hight and mighty conductors go, the engineer on my first day of
engineer training always told me, make sure THEY go home mad at night. He was
always considered to be cut from another source of sheet metal, but there was a
lot of wisdom in what he said. Whether he actually saw Sutnik turning over and
over as it passed over GM Yard at McCook, that's still a matter of discussion
in some quarters, today.

I keep thinking, that since I mentioned an S scale old time 4-4-0 on the
Bachmann train forum the other day, the mailman may be leaving a package in my
mailbox one of these days, but I'm not holding my breath. They got enough
su-ah- customers in the scales they do manufacture to consider taking on
another group of complainers. Anyway, I have considered running 0n30 as Sn42
(the measurements are about right) just to see the look on the nitpickers'
faces.

I guess I better quit before we get moderated. That happens frequently since
you've been away.

Take care

About to lose your beloved ALCO's and need another source of diversion, eh.

Ah, the AM and its Alco's: The old chugs are safe for the foreseeable
future. They'll power all switch jobs and locals, as well as being in-consist
with the new ones as needed.

I wish we were closer together, I think between us we could make your little
 KC switching layout really swing.

Now that would indeed be the hoot of all hoots. I think you would enjoy
operations on my little West Bottoms layout, and I KNOW I would enjoy
operating on your Shabbona RR. Why don't you sell your home and move to the
 Sunbelt? :-)

On second thought... can you imagine what a mess we could make of 12th St.
Yard? TWO Engineers making the switch moves? You KNOW what those high n'
mighty type Conductors would think of that!

Speaking of an S scale 4-4-0... have you been able to view a Bachmann On30
4-4-0 up close to see if it could crossover to S scale?

{S-Scale List} Re: The Wayward Son Returns?

2013-08-27 Thread shabbona_rr
Welcome back, Andre! About to lose your beloved ALCO's and need another source
of diversion, eh. I wish we were closer together, I think between us we could
make your little KC switching layout really swing.

I've been on sort of a sabbatical of my own, rewiring a Bachmann HO Jupitor
4-4-0 that my wandering keyboard fingers found on Ebay. Since a standard gauge
S scale old time 4-4-0 is unavailable (being made of rare unobtanium,
apparently) S scale SHABBONA RR continues unabated.

tinkering with Something S right now.

However, I have some clutter in this hobby room to dispose of (can't see

I've been doing a lot of thinking about where I'm at with the hobby of model
railroading, S scale in particular. I've also been giving some thought on
how to re-define my goals on my little KC Lines layout in view of the demise
 of my main decal supplier.

In fact, I have an interactive blog that I have kept running for the past
couple of years over at the O Gauge RR (magazine) forums. IF you have some

Welp... all fer now. I've decloaked and am receiving S scale Yahoo mailings

{S-Scale List} Re: recording NASG Convention workshops

2013-08-22 Thread shabbona_rr
I did one day at St. Louis in 2009, a three hour drive each way. Even though I
would rather have had more time, I did get to meet quite a few friends I have
made over the years and am happy for what I got.

I did the same thing for the S Fest in St. Louis in 2011, and again, while
the time was short, I'm glad I went. I recommend one day to anyone who is not
in a position to spend more time at a multi-day meet.

Unfortunately, I was unable to make the 2012 S Spree, which probably raised
some whoops of delight among some who did.

I almost didn't attend the NASG convention in Scranton. Faced with several
hundred dollars and being on a fixed retirement income, I didn't see how I

blitz. I had my layout open for three days of the convention, so I went to
Scranton early Friday morning and figured on spending the day at the
convention, stay at a cheap motel in Wilkes-Barre that night and return home
Saturday morning. It looks like the convention folks weren't geared for
one-dayers. I paid my 20 bucks on line, but the folks at the registration
table didn't have a record of my applying and they had no badges for my wife
and me. No problem, Jamie came by and we did up some hand-written badges.
Since it was for one day, we couldn't get tickets for Steamtown, but since I
had a Golden Age Passport, we got in for nothing anyway. I had a great time
seeing a lot of old friends and got to peruse the dealer hall. My big
purchase was a PRR X31 made
  by Frank Titman.

So, I spent a total of $125 for the whole thing, not counting gas from
Shippensburg, PA. Obviously, I can't do a one dayer in Wisconsin next year,
but I hope we can swing it to go for several days. If anyone lives fairly
close to a convention, I would recommend doing one day if cost cutting is
your thing so you won't miss out on all the fun. I just hope the convention
folks can accomodate one-dayers more efficiently. This is not meant to
criticize an overall great convention. It looks like I'll get my turn to run
one. I volunteered to head up the 2014 NMRA MER regional convention if our

I would also like to attend the NASG in Wisconsin a few days later. I
could even go by Amtrak from Cleveland to Milwaukee.

But with all the lodging costs, its probably going to be too expensive.

Same here, Cary, just don't get tangled up in the NYC/PRR discussions that
occur here every now and then.

As far as SD-45-2's, the only six-wheel trucks I run on SHABBONA are under
anAF-converted AF baggage/RPO car. I will admit, though, I almost bit on n ALCO
RSD4/5 a while back. However, I tend to stick to 4-axle power for ease of use.
I use quite a few Atlas converted #6 switches, nd I wasn't sure the rdius would
be sufficient for long wheelbase 6-axle power.

{S-Scale List} Re: displaying contests

2013-08-14 Thread shabbona_rr
WOW! I thought for a minute I was going to have to reach into my monitor and
strangle YAHOO for a minute.

Back in topic; I remember reading where a prominent New York jeweler put a big
ol' timber rattler in with his fine jewelry display to keep curious and
potentially sticky fingers at bay.

At the 1982 NASG convention in Cleveland, I was moving my scratch-built
Columbus Greenville caboose when a visitor knocked it out of my hands. The
poor guy really felt bad and was beside himself trying to figure out how to
make amends. I assured him that accidents happen, and pointed out that only a
short piece of roofwalk had broken off. We parted friends, and I have never
replaced the piece of roofwalk (note to self...)

At the 1978 S Fest, a Dayton cast F-3 tee-boned my first Alco RS-1 with
predictable results. I assured the operator that if I could build it, I could
repair it, which I did. Same with a RRM NW-2 that suffered a similar disaster
when a display case hit the deck face down

{S-Scale List} Re: displaying contests

2013-08-14 Thread shabbona_rr
Roger:

That's a good point. I built most of my models with the idea that they may have
to disassemble for repairs and maintenance. It has paid off, because today I
don't think I have the dexterity for that kind of work, if my Rock Island
express boxcar is any indication.

I may abandon that project and substitute one of my X-29 derivative AF
castings. I figure with a little paint and maybe a set of express reefer
trucks, it may not look too bad. I may even have a can of spray Krylon paint
from the local Tru-Valu that is close enough for the green paint. I'll bet when
it's done, very few modelers will be able to point out the discrepancies.

and have had only minor repairs to make. I’m not sure if the judges or the
viewers did the damage. Actually, I’ve done more damage transporting the
model to and from the convention!

I have also worked a few contest rooms, and can say that the models typically
had to be rearranged for space as new models were entered. And it would be
impossible for judges to do a proper job of evaluating an entry without at
least turning it around. It just goes with the territory. At the narrow
gauge convention last year in Seattle, I carefully moved about 20 models for
Don Heimburger, editor of the '”Sn3 Modeler”, to a table that he had set
up with a background and lights for shooting images for his magazine.
Hopefully, I didn’t break anything, or leave any noticeable fingerprints.
All the volunteers had cloth gloves.

{S-Scale List} Re: Double slip switch or double crossover

2013-08-04 Thread shabbona_rr
Rance:

I have had a double-slip switch in operation on SHABBONA RR for over twenty
years. It took some special wiring and turnout linkage to operate properly, but
direction is controlled by two ground throw switch throws.

I wrote an article describing the process for Model Railroader about the same
time I made it operational, however, they never ran the article. The
double-slip switch itself was an Old Pullman unit from Hoquat Hobbies.

Could one make a double crossover using AM track (2 pairs of switches
plus a 30 degree crossover) or does the crossover present
wiring/shorting problems. One can make a single crossover using a pair
of turnouts with the tracks on 3 centers, so one could make two
crossovers which would serve the purpose of a double crossover -
although it would be almost twice as long as a double crossover, it
would remove possible problems with a crossover. I would prefer using
SHS type track for this, but I don't think there are any crossovers in
SHS track. Well, any suggestions would be gratefully accepted.

the rail to bend sufficiently for operation with Tortoise or Bluepoint

the throw bar. And lastly, gap the points and the stock rail using the
 NASG/NMRA track gauge.

Guilty as charged! I have made other arrangements to get the parts I need to
finish the trucks I have parts for. The Ebay selection, though, would be good
for anybody wanting some of these trucks for their own use. Kadee can supply
truck springs, either their #637 HO springs, or HO-T-1 springs. They make up
into very nice inexpensive trucks for those who are not overly concerned with
picky details, and the Kadee springs give them a soft spongy ride that we all

As you all know I started this loco back in January and my goal was to finish
by June. Well that did not happen. At this time August 1st the soldering iron
can stay unplugged. The next step is installing the two decoders and the

after August. I will photo every step of those two procedures as I have the

If I were to figure the hours spent on actual work this loco would have taken
8 hours a day 5 days a week for 2 months or more to get it to this point.

I have uploaded some videos of the first ever run to YouTube.com. To see them

{S-Scale List} Re: FNF - July 26, 2013 - cont. on 7/30/13

2013-07-30 Thread shabbona_rr
I couldn't assemble any more trucks for my rolling stock, so decided to
experiment and put a pair of heavy duty Andrews trucks unde my CNW mill gon,
still waiting for papers to move off road, starting with
(http://groups.yahoo.com/group/S-Scale/photos/album/1775582643/pic/384306210/view?picmode=mode=tnorder=ordinalstart=41count=20dir=asc)
which shows a N'eastern truck modified with Kadee #637 truck springs. The mill
gon turned out great, with those large journals behind the sill steps,
rmeniniscent of those nights at Joliet Yard when they would nudge my foot as we
shoved into a storage track, just to let me know they were there - I'm sure Bud
R. can elaborate further. The hopper car is a AM,with Andrews trucks, also a
closeup, and then an old Marx stock car with Andrews trucks and Kadee #637
truck springs.

I also assembled the last Andrews truck with the available parts I still had,
and substituted needle point Axle 33 wheelsets for blunt axle variety, and
they also worked well, showing that N''eastern trucks can be assembled with
1/16 brass bearings and needlepoint axles with no ill effects - in fact, they
roll easier because of less friction between the axles and the bearings.

In other news, I have commissioned Roy Meisner to cast me some more truck
bolsters so I can finish out the trucks I still have on hand

after I open the bottle, or it could be the plasma vortex's around here. I
think it's because I make very sure that no lacquer thinner ever comes into
contact with the paint, and I make sure that the bottle is air tight when I
put the lid back on. That means sometimes I have to make a new gasket

The one problem I have had is the no longer available colors, (DRGW Aspen

that the regular black, S10, which should dry to a gloss is instead a flat
black. I did cure that by buying a quart of Dupont Centari #99, (Pitch
Black). Very odd thing is it is just like Scalecoat, same odor, same reducer,
 same results.

This has actually become a mute point. I thought I might get into custom
painting if I tried hard enough. I was charging about $3.25 and hour, I
raised my prices to $4.15 an hour but finally gave up on the whole idea.

The Kadee HO-T-1 springs are very similar to Ace, but maybe a little softer,
which only gives a better ride in either Neastern or Ace truck frames. The
exact dimensions are: .094 outside dia, .080 inside diameter, free length
.0200, and the solid (compressed) ht. is .056.

The Kadee #637 truck springs may be a little short to work in Ace sideframes,

You're right, I drive the old gravel roads - with piece of window screen and a

Right now, I've been respringing some N'eastern trucks with Kadee #637 truck
springs with relative success, sans the ones that blue yonder on me. Those
springs have some cushion action, too. I've also used Kadee HO-T-1 (house part
number) with great success. They resemble the soft version of the old Ace
springs.

I just bit the bullet and ordered some wheelsets from Fred Rouse. That should
serve my future needs for a while. What we need is for the NASG to make a run
of the old Ace steel wheelsets. Tey're always looking for something to do that
won't compete with the manufacturers and I'm sure this wouldn't. They wouldn't
have to be something exotic, either, just a basic wheelset like the Ace.

I'm curious about the AM truck springs on an FA. Was the size close to correct?

and bounces. Those model FA's did pretty much the same thing.

Jack Troxell tried an experiment with the older powdered AM 125
wheelsets. He put them on his lathe and turned the profile to the
correct 110 size and got rid of the granular appearance of the wheel's
surface. I don't think he made more than a handful of them--probably
 too time consuming.

In thinking about all the wheelsets I've used over the years--wow. I
started out with mostly the Millers' and some Rex. I liked the Rex
trucks (Rex had brake shoes) mated with the Miller wheels. Problem was
the wheel-set were getting hard to get, so I bought the Ace wheel
bearing/wheelsets and installed on the Rex and NE trucks and everything
rolled much better. Then NWSL wheels became available and I got rid of
most of my old stuff with much improvement. Of course the more modern
AM, PRS and then SHS trucks did even better.

All this shows where we were in the 70's and how much better things are
today generally! My good friend boB can drive along the old gravel road

{S-Scale List} Back to the basics

2013-07-23 Thread shabbona_rr
While everybody is going Ga! Ga! over the latest high priced out of orbit
offerings from MTH and Lionel, those of us who need basic things like wheels to
put under models we operate are suffering a severe shortage of wheels.

What would it take for one of our manufacturers to produce some S scale wheel
and axle sets in metal, RP-25 in Code .110, .125, or .115 sizes. The ones that
are available are simply too pricey to be of any use in a long range scenario.

I have been assembling some Northeastern trucks, and have run out of wheels.
Almost makes me wish for the bad old days when we at least had a foundation to
build models on. I simply can't afford the prices on these new S scale models
that are supposed to be coming out, and the going price for wheelsets is in the
same area. I certainly don't want to return to HO after all these years just to
get running gear!

First off, before anything else, your new reefer is great.

Next, you're right, the $1.00 per axle wheelsets have gone the way of sealing
wax, Dodo Birds and even the late, great PRR. Honest politicians, however,
never existed, at least that I can recall.

There,s certainly nothing wrong with the wheelsets available today, other than
being a little pricey, which can put a serious damper on my efforts to Beat the
Recession, as spelled out by Jeff Madden in the latest issue of NASG Digest. I
just wonder if it isn't possible to manufacture a lower price wheelset on the
order of the old Miller RP-25 wheelsets, or the Ace steel wheelsets (with both
blunt and needle-point axles, if that's what it would take from the days of
yore. My situation is such that I could not take on such an undertaking, but I
thought I would put the word out to see if there's anyhing our current
manufacturers could do in this area, maybe offering them in packs similar to
Kadee.

In fact, the NASG is always looking for something to do for the membership. Is
this something they could handle? I have to quit, now, since my typing dexterity
is going from bad to worse. In closing, however, I would like to point out that
Kadee HO-T-1 coil springs are a close representation of the Ace springs, maybe

That requires two strings. Ever try to push a string?...

 Hey Bob,
String eliminates the potential left-right confusion. Just forward and
 back!

DC throttles eliminate all the confusion; turn them to the right, engine
speed increases; turn them to the left, speed decreases.

Re: {S-Scale List} Official Cancellation of the 2010 National Convention Car Project

2013-07-11 Thread shabbona_rr
I have a CGW car as well. I would like to have had the 2010 one, too, but I am
getting a preponderance of CGW, anyway, especially since I finished those CGW
insulated boxcars a year or so ago, so I guess life will go on.

Well, that's unfortunate, but certainly enough time as passed. I do
 have a vintage CGW single sheathed boxcar that I thought of selling;
guess I'll keep it for the time being. Still that car would be a great
one for a resin version--are you listening Jim?

For the smaller importers like S Scale America, the injection molded
