{S-Scale List} Re: Hinged or solid points to throw bar
Bill: What do you mean, when we met again! I'm still waiting to meet you and see the Jefferson Central for the First Time! One of these days, as Pa Kettle used to put it. What you said about Frank's Spiral Hill is true. I always delight in reading your accounts of the good ol' days, when you guys used to help each other dig basements, and whatever. Seemed like someone always had (has) the necessary skills to pull a project at hand out of the mud at critical times! As far as switches go, I have never had a point failure since I began building switches as I have said many times on this list and in articles. The last article was in 1/64 Modeling Guide, where I discussed forming point and closure rails so the throwbar would force the points apart and keep the solder joints under pressure so they wouldn' tend to pull apart from the tension forces created when throwing a switch. I have a #4 in the service facility at Mooar Yard where I have done this and it is one of the easiest throwing switches on the whole layout, because the points tend to try to center themselves when the switch is thrown. On my #6 Atlas conversions, replacing a styrene throwbar would be easy, if I ever have to, which has occurred once because I was careless making it in the first place Incidentally it was a Spiral Hill empty hopper that derailed on the popwer house switch last weekend. Real easy rerailing job, though. boB Nicholson ___ As I've said before, on my model railroad we fix and repair when needed just like the prototype. In recent years even Frank titman's Spiral Hill switches would whack-out and he would cuss at them. Bert Mahr would repair them for Frank and at times Bert said it wasn't an easy task. But heck, that's what friends are for! Now the SPIRAL HILL isn't anymore, only fond memories of the good old days of the gang meeting at Frank's home. I miss it and I miss Frank in particular, his knowing smile was infectious! Happy Smiles to you, till we meet again! See Ya, Bill (Fraley) Yahoo! I made the hinges for 125 rail out of SHS insulated joiners and for 100 rail out of PECO insulated joiners. The throw bars were made of PC board with a gap in the copper foil. The rail soldered like a charm to the foil. The main trick is to heat the end of the point so that it would melt solder before making contact with the foil. The foil delaminates if it gets too hot. Only failures were initial bad solder joints. They held for 10 years or more. One aspect I didn't like was that some of the point assemblies would work their way away from the hinge until the throw ran into its adjacent tie. There was not enough movement to cause the rail to work free of the hinge joiner; I just didn't like the unsightly gap. I think this creep was due to the tension at the rigid joints at the throw bars. Re: {S-Scale List} Hinged or solid points to throwbar
Jamie: The only switches where I soldered the point rails to the throwbar is where I had formed the closure rails to put constant pressure on the throwbar to keep them from stressing the solder joints and pullinf them apart. I wrote this up in the 1/64 Modeling guide a year or so ago. I can't remember what issue. I prefer to use jointed point rails and use screws and tabs to mount them to the closure rails. With My Atlas #6 conversions, this is a no brainer, but with Old Pullman #5's, the point connecting bar is mounted to the throwbar through the center screw. The joints in the points keep them from stressing the solder joints to the point of breaking them. boB Nicholson --- In S-Scale@yahoogroups.com, Jamie Bothwell vze4cs43@... wrote: Michael, I have elected to go with soldering the rails to the throw bar, but I don't have years of in use experience. It's an EMD SW-1 that I assembled from a Locomotive Workshop kit in the late 1970's. There were a lot of complaints about Locomotive Workshop kits, usually from people who couldn't assemble one. They were difficult, no doubt about it, but they taught the builder a lot of skills. Mine has been running for over thirty years, now, subject to running upgrades as time goes on. It is equipped with a flywheel and a dual capacitor to get it over dead spots. {S-Scale List} Re: Driveshafts slip no more
Excellent solution, Bill! I have done things like this in the past to eliminate drive shaft slippage, most notably in my ALCO models RS-2. Another technique I have used is to drill out a driveshaft socket for a press fit a 1/16 styrene strip, then drill out the strip for a press fit on the motor shaft. Not quite the skill and finesse you exhibit with your work, but satisfactory in situations where the extreme stresses you mention are not present. boB Nicholson __ --- In S-Scale@yahoogroups.com, Bill Lane bill@... wrote: If you have Overland locos you have encountered the pesky plastic driveshafts slipping on the motor and tower shafts. Previous incarnations was soldering 0-80 nuts to a thin brass tube. I could not put much pressure on the screws before it failed. I now start with 5/16 solid round brass stock and drill to a snug fit on the original plastic Overland parts and tap 2) 0-80 holes directly opposite of each other. Nicholson --- In S-Scale@yahoogroups.com, Peter Vanvliet groups@... wrote: Last weekend I re-converted my AM FA2 to S-CAB. I had removed the components before so that NWSLcould replace the stock AM motor with one of theirs. The S-CAB components I passed around at my clinic at the NASG convention were the ones removedfrom my FA2. Now they are back in their place. http://pmrr.org/Equipment/FA2/index_LVL2_7.htm The NWSL motor replacement was a slight improvement, but in retrospect not worth the cost. Of course, I didn't know that ahead of time. I think, ultimately, at fault is the gearing in the AM gear tower (it has the low gear). At this point in time that is beyond my capabilities (I am not a mechanical engineer/machinist), so I will leave that issue for my future self to tackle. I do plan to pursue super-detailing the engines in the future (already have the B.T.S. parts). I found the S-CAB powered engine derailing on my tracklast night. I discovered that the headlight wiring touches the front truck gear tower, and prevents it from smoothly swiveling, so that, I presume, is the cause of the derailments. My second, now un-powered, A unit would derail as well, but for a different reason. Upon close inspection I found that the wheels toward the center ofthe engine floated just above the rail (i.e. the truck was not parallel withthe rail). Looking for the cause, I found that the mounting lug (towhich the truck is attached to the frame) wasn't perfectlystraight, so when the mounting nut is tightened, it pulled the whole truck out of alignment with respect to the track. Loosening that nut solved the alignment issue (i.e. all four wheels of the truck touched the rail), but re-introduced the wobbling of the frame/shell. My solution was to glue a piece of styrene to the underside of the frame where the truck gear tower just barely touches the frame when tightened, which forces the truck to sit at a slight (opposite) angle. It was just enough to cause the four wheels to once again touch the rails. And that solved the derailment problems with that engine. It was kind of fun testing that unpowered engine by having it be pulled by my NW2. In the prototype, the FA2 engines would break down often, so my guess is that there were times when they were indeed pulled by other engines. Today I plan on fixing the headlight wire issue mentioned above, and then doing a full charge on the engine's batteries. Then this weekend I hope to do my endurance test (running the engine, light, on my layout until the battery is drained). As Bob Werre mentioned earlier, next weekend we will be at the Galveston show, where I hope to run the AM FA2 (A-B-A set) with a full train and see how long its battery lasts on a powered layout (Digitrax DCC on our club layout). That's what I've been up to, as far as modeling is concerned. - Peter. On 09/27/2013 9:43 am, Bill Lane wrote: Posting about the list being it being quiet? (:-) Who is doing real S Scale modeling? {S-Scale List} Re: M R Jan 1999
Bill: I don't remember that PRSL article, but I may have to see if I still have it in my -ahem- archives. I would love to see Dave Jasper's layout, too. As far as DCC, I probably glossed over that, having decided by that early date that DCC was not in my future or budget, that running trains would be (and continues to be) my main focus. I just purchased an (HO) sand and bucket crane on Ebay for my ready-mix concrete and block plant in Mooar Yard. I think it will work, I'll know more when it comes in the mail. I've been wanting to do an FNF on my Vari-pulse Sympatico throttle. It came with an optional memory feature, compliments of the manufacturer when the first one did not show up as advertised, and I've been using it to hone my switching skills. It is different in that a new level of foresight and control is required. What I find interesting is creating slack over the uncoupling magnets and having the open knuckles appear almost magically as the switch engine pulls the cut of cars away from the joint. I have also been experimenting with rare earth magnets in spots where the standard ceramic magnets do not always have enough strength to open unaltered Kadee #5's, but need to do more research on that one. Where I have made them work, they call for more engineer skill with the Varipulse throttle to spot the coupler knuckles for uncoupling, but they do work. I have ordered some more rare earth magnets in different sizes to carry this research further. Other than that, things pretty quiet on SHABBONA as daily operations continue unabated, by faulty DCC receivers or other causes. I have considered delving into constant velocity headlights for some of my locomotives, but headlight control on trailing units is an issue. I may have to inlist the aid of one of our list experts for help boB Nicholson __ --- In S-Scale@yahoogroups.com, Bill Lane bill@... wrote: I borrowed the January 1999 issue of Model Railroader because I just found out there was an article on an O Scale PRSL layout I did not know about. Sometimes we get a little testy with each other but that's because, like cats, we're making more S scale modelers. As far as layouts go, I agree with the idea of cutting your 4x7 piece of plywood into two 2x7 sections. For a switching layout, I would suggest something simple, such as the terminal area of the LOWELL SOUTHERN, which appeared in a recent issue of the NASG Dispatch. This would give you something to play with while you contemplate something larger, and also give you an idea about how little it takes to build a viable layout. My own SHABBONA RR was supposed to be a simple Class 1 secondary main line, but has taken on a life of its own to the point of becoming almost unmanageable. boB Nicholson __ --- In S-Scale@yahoogroups.com, Roy royhoffman@... wrote: Hi Cary, You wrote: I live in Denver. Andre: There's been a little progress here. I sold off all the F-units, and am now an all ALCO rroad with the exeption of EMD SW-1 #22, a CBQ NW-2 unit I picked up off of Ebay last spring, and two and one half FP-7's for passenger service. I say two and one half because the third FP-7 has not been fully prepared for service, yet. I couldn't make Scranton, so while I was crying in my beer, and between swatting flies, I dolled up an old Marx stock car that would pucker the smokestack on one of Bill Lane's K-4's if it stayed in the vicinity too long (picture in the Photos section). Then I got wound up with this 19th Century thing, but S scale 4-4-0's are made of expensive and rare unobtanium metals which effectively shot that in the foot. Welcome back, Andre! About to lose your beloved ALCO's and need another source of diversion, eh. I wish we were closer together, I think between us we could make your little KC switching layout really swing. I've been on sort of a sabbatical of my own, rewiring a Bachmann HO Jupitor 4-4-0 that my wandering keyboard fingers found on Ebay. {S-Scale List} Re: recording NASG Convention workshops
I did one day at St. Louis in 2009, a three hour drive each way. Even though I would rather have had more time, I did get to meet quite a few friends I have made over the years and am happy for what I got. I did the same thing for the S Fest in St. Louis in 2011, and again, while the time was short, I'm glad I went. I recommend one day to anyone who is not in a position to spend more time at a multi-day meet. Unfortunately, I was unable to make the 2012 S Spree, which probably raised some whoops of delight among some who did. boB Nicholson __ --- In S-Scale@yahoogroups.com, Roy royhoffman@... wrote: I almost didn't attend the NASG convention in Scranton. Faced with several hundred dollars and being on a fixed retirement income, I didn't see how I could justify spending all that money. I came up with a compromise: a one-day blitz. I had my layout open for three days of the convention, so I went to Scranton early Friday morning and figured on spending the day at the convention, stay at a cheap motel in Wilkes-Barre that night and return home Saturday morning. It looks like the convention folks weren't geared for one-dayers. I paid my 20 bucks on line, but the folks at the registration table didn't have a record of my applying and they had no badges for my wife and me. No problem, Jamie came by and we did up some hand-written badges. Since it was for one day, we couldn't get tickets for Steamtown, but since I had a Golden Age Passport, we got in for nothing anyway. I had a great time seeing a lot of old friends and got to peruse the dealer hall. My big purchase was a PRR X31 made by Frank Titman. So, I spent a total of $125 for the whole thing, not counting gas from Shippensburg, PA. Obviously, I can't do a one dayer in Wisconsin next year, but I hope we can swing it to go for several days. If anyone lives fairly close to a convention, I would recommend doing one day if cost cutting is your thing so you won't miss out on all the fun. I just hope the convention folks can accomodate one-dayers more efficiently. This is not meant to criticize an overall great convention. It looks like I'll get my turn to run one. I could even go by Amtrak from Cleveland to Milwaukee. But with all the lodging costs, its probably going to be too expensive. At the 1982 NASG convention in Cleveland, I was moving my scratch-built Columbus Greenville caboose when a visitor knocked it out of my hands. The poor guy really felt bad and was beside himself trying to figure out how to make amends. I assured him that accidents happen, and pointed out that only a short piece of roofwalk had broken off. We parted friends, and I have never replaced the piece of roofwalk (note to self...) At the 1978 S Fest, a Dayton cast F-3 tee-boned my first Alco RS-1 with predictable results. {S-Scale List} Re: displaying contests
Roger: That's a good point. I built most of my models with the idea that they may have to disassemble for repairs and maintenance. It has paid off, because today I don't think I have the dexterity for that kind of work, if my Rock Island express boxcar is any indication. I may abandon that project and substitute one of my X-29 derivative AF castings. I figure with a little paint and maybe a set of express reefer trucks, it may not look too bad. I may even have a can of spray Krylon paint from the local Tru-Valu that is close enough for the green paint. I'll bet when it's done, very few modelers will be able to point out the discrepancies. boB Nicholson --- In S-Scale@yahoogroups.com, Roger Nulton roger.nulton@... wrote: boB, You have a good attitude. I have also worked a few contest rooms, and can say that the models typically had to be rearranged for space as new models were entered. And it would be impossible for judges to do a proper job of evaluating an entry without at least turning it around. It just goes with the territory. At the narrow gauge convention last year in Seattle, I carefully moved about 20 models for Don Heimburger, editor of the 'âSn3 Modelerâ, to a table that he had set up with a background and lights for shooting images for his magazine. {S-Scale List} Re: Double slip switch or double crossover
Rance: I have had a double-slip switch in operation on SHABBONA RR for over twenty years. It took some special wiring and turnout linkage to operate properly, but direction is controlled by two ground throw switch throws. I wrote an article describing the process for Model Railroader about the same time I made it operational, however, they never ran the article. The double-slip switch itself was an Old Pullman unit from Hoquat Hobbies. boB Nicholson __ --- In S-Scale@yahoogroups.com, Rance Velapoldi rvelapoldi@... wrote: Since this is asking about turnouts, I was wondering if anyone has had experience using a double slip switch? I seem to remember someone saying they don't work well - have problems of trains going through them. Has anyone ever made one (using SHS type track, roughly code 133). Could one make a double crossover using AM track (2 pairs of switches plus a 30 degree crossover) or does the crossover present wiring/shorting problems. One can make a single crossover using a pair of turnouts with the tracks on 3 centers, so one could make two crossovers which would serve the purpose of a double crossover - although it would be almost twice as long as a double crossover, it would remove possible problems with a crossover. I would prefer using SHS type track for this, but I don't think there are any crossovers in SHS track. Well, any suggestions would be gratefully accepted. thanks for info. {S-Scale List} Re: FNF - July 26, 2013 - cont. on 7/30/13
I couldn't assemble any more trucks for my rolling stock, so decided to experiment and put a pair of heavy duty Andrews trucks unde my CNW mill gon, still waiting for papers to move off road, starting with (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/S-Scale/photos/album/1775582643/pic/384306210/view?picmode=mode=tnorder=ordinalstart=41count=20dir=asc) which shows a N'eastern truck modified with Kadee #637 truck springs. The mill gon turned out great, with those large journals behind the sill steps, rmeniniscent of those nights at Joliet Yard when they would nudge my foot as we shoved into a storage track, just to let me know they were there - I'm sure Bud R. can elaborate further. The hopper car is a AM,with Andrews trucks, also a closeup, and then an old Marx stock car with Andrews trucks and Kadee #637 truck springs. I also assembled the last Andrews truck with the available parts I still had, and substituted needle point Axle 33 wheelsets for blunt axle variety, and they also worked well, showing that N''eastern trucks can be assembled with 1/16 brass bearings and needlepoint axles with no ill effects - in fact, they roll easier because of less friction between the axles and the bearings. In other news, I have commissioned Roy Meisner to cast me some more truck bolsters so I can finish out the trucks I still have on hand boB Nicholson _{___ r --- In S-Scale@yahoogroups.com, shabbona_rr user141771@... wrote: This afternoon, I opened the package of wheelsets I ordered from Fred Rouse, and I am impressed with them. While everybody is going Ga! Ga! over the latest high priced out of orbit offerings from MTH and Lionel, those of us who need basic things like wheels to put under models we operate are suffering a severe shortage of wheels. What would it take for one of our manufacturers to produce some S scale wheel and axle sets in metal, RP-25 in Code .110, .125, or .115 sizes. The ones that are available are simply too pricey to be of any use in a long range scenario. I have been assembling some Northeastern trucks, and have run out of wheels. Almost makes me wish for the bad old days when we at least had a foundation to build models on. I simply can't afford the prices on these new S scale models that are supposed to be coming out, and the going price for wheelsets is in the same area. I use the replaced SHS trucks under some other models with good results, so they don't go to waste. boB Nicholson __ --- In S-Scale@yahoogroups.com, scale S only scalesonly@... wrote: Hi boB -- I thought S Scale Loco Supply was coming out with new wheelsets at a slightly better price than NWSL and lots better than MTH, though I have not checked with Fred R. about this.In any case, itâs one of those areas inflation can be seen and it is unlikely we will see $1 per axle wheelsets ever again. To Pieterâs comment about AM trucks â to me they are the best 50 ton trucks ever made. Maybe too free rolling for you, though... Have fun! Bill Winans --- While everybody is going Ga! Ga! over the latest high priced out of orbit offerings from MTH and Lionel, those of us who need basic things like wheels to put under models we operate are suffering a severe shortage of wheels. I certainly don't want to return to HO after all these years just to get running gear! boB Nicholson Yahoo!
