{S-Scale List} Re: cleaning brass

2013-03-01 Thread ashpan.clinker

I use glass beads in my blaster
I would not advise it though

I use Sodium Hydroxide in solution with water to strip paint.
I would not advise this either.

I use diluted Nitric Acid as an overall brass brightener.
This stuff is only EXTREMELY DANGEROUS to mess with if you do not know what you
are doing. Mixing it with some acetone or lacquer thinner by accident and it
does this burn thing so fast that it's called an explosion. it will make your
day, one you won't ever forget!

Baking soda is good stuff. I buy big boxes of it. I advise having it handy

As a testimony as to how clean the brass is you should be painting it within
a few minutes of blasting. Touch it and you can hear it tarnish!

I don't know anything about using blast BEADS on a brass model. I use 400
grit aluminum oxide. I am actually just about to change it out for a new
pile now. It does get pulverized and contaminated after long term use.

{S-Scale List} Re: plastic welding

2013-03-07 Thread ashpan.clinker

Mine are welded using a Thermatic process developed originally by an engineer
employed by NASA. He, not me, was a very gifted individual and I think over the
years has many patents attributed to his work. I feel honored having met him
when I was quite young.

James Rustermier.

Ed was reasonably correct. It is ultrasonic plastic welding. In a galaxy far
far away I used to work at a company that made plotter pens and ink
cartridges. I was the utility set up person. Some of the machines that were
on site were injection molding, pad printing, and ultrasonic plastic
welders. All machines could have made model railroad items! They also had a
small workshop for making fixtures and small repairs etc. That is where I
 first used a metal lathe.

Pad printing was a persnickety beast. The ink viscosity changed by the
minute as did the print quality. The pads were a silicone rubber that was
creepy to touch. I also made nylon photo sensitive image plates for short
run items. Most were an expensive hardened steel plate.

The ultrasonic welders rubbed the 2 plastic pieces together so fast the
plastic melted together at the contact points. A typical weld was no more
than 3 seconds - most were 1 to 2 seconds. There was the frequency
adjustment, and a very slight down pressure that pushed the pieces together
as it welded. You had to balance between getting a complete even weld that
held the ink without leaking and not create too much flash or distort the
pieces. It was a piercing high pitched sound when it was a good weld. It was
a very loud uncomfortable sound if something went wrong.

The later SHS couplers were undoubtedly ultrasonic welded together.

I built up 6 sets of A-B units using my own frames, AM drive components,
and Superscale shells. I cut the rear walls out and built up flat ones using
styrene material. Some of them I cut out the screen area and installed see
through brass screen. One I did as an F-2 with three portholes in the A unit.
Some were F-3, F-5, F-7 or F-9. All of them except one lone A shell I
purchased as Superscale shells. I have a an A and an a B unit here and the
packages iare clearly marked Superscale. I purchased just ONE Wabash Valley
once for $2. It only had 2 porthole windows in the B unit so I had to add the
third window. I sold all of them. They were all painted DRGW and are out there
somewhere. One A-B set was built to Proto 64 track and wheel standards.

Who was this Superscale? It wasn't the pre Perma-Built or the Portland printer
that made the copperplate passenger car kits.

There will be brass 4 6 wheel heavy weight Pullman trucks, Probably brass

do just making the trucks for my Marker Light brass streamline DRGW cars and

I'm buying them. Why? In S scale I like them. I don't buy much plastic. I
have 10 plastic cars, they are all PRS. No SHS, no AM, no AF, no any other
plastic, especially urethane. I don't pay $40 for a box of sticks though. I
also don't buy any pre printed wooden reefer kits. They are all about a foot
too tall.
The steam depot kit that I bid on at eBay finally sold to some one for
$39.95 with shipping of $9.71. I bid I think $25 for the kit. It had AM trucks
in it. I bid $40 for the 2 wooden stock car kits. They sold for $41.00 plus
shipping. They didn't have any trucks in the kits. The last Kinsman passenger
car kit sold for $94.00.
Maybe some one is trying to corner the market??? $94.00 was way over the
top for me. I thought $50 was a fair price for the Passenger car kit.

If you are into American Flyer and stand ins for marker lights will do, then

DRGW,UP, WP, Santa Fe, etc. Collecting these is an insidious hobby all unto
itself! Those marker lights on that American Flyer loco look nothing like the
real ones. They do, very definitely do, look like the ones used on American
Flyer locomotives! I think that is why Doug is selling them.
Since I'm bent sideways about 80% of the time, and also spin mostly on my
head, I cast my own marker lights in beautiful brass. Ask any one that knows

{S-Scale List} Re: Marker Lights

2013-05-17 Thread ashpan.clinker

That NYC operation had special vents to let the air out when the water trough
intake was dropped into those water pans and the tender was cruising at 80 MPH
and low altitude. Tutherwise there would be a split at the seams. The rest of
the world usually just stopped under the spout of a water tank, opened the
hatch, and poured the water in the tender. There was plenty of room for air to
escape, no special openings needed. It was imperative that the one filling the
tender, usually the fireman, but not necessarily so, followed the edicts of
rule 19, other wise he just may be in the tank, so to speak.

Tom:

If the 10 0 cars you have are square corner instead of W corner cars they
are rare. When J. Verser (PRS) decided to make the 10 6 W corner car I
think he had Joel in Vacaville modify the end slide mold of the 10 0 square
corner car. The only square corner cars in existence today are from the one run
of bodies that he made about 14 years ago.

I know a lot of guys don't care. Most don't even know, and it may never be
important.

Felix has been selling odds and ends of his dads old line of cars on eBay for
some time now, None have been sold with tucks and most don't have all the
parts. Recently he had one square corner unpainted car kit up on eBay. I won
the bid, Yes, it was expensive for an undecorated kit. BUT, it had the Delrin
plastic trucks, no wheels sets, all of the parts, and it is the only square
corner car I've ever seen him list!

In the real 1:1 world the boxcar car has what looks like a round corner!
Hiding inside that corner is a vertical channel that goes from the floor area

would look like a W. A stronger design element than previously used.

{S-Scale List} S scale kits on eBay

2013-05-29 Thread ashpan.clinker
Some guy in Florida is selling these on eBay

:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kinsman-12-plus-Wood-Model-S-gauge-Train-Kits/130918980360?_trksid=p2045573.m2042_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D27%26meid%3D8014387166917944667%26pid%3D100033%26prg%3D1011%26rk%3D2%26sd%3D390603739731%26

The really neat part from the photos it appears they are either not complete,
and /or missing the instructions. He also thinks the opening bid should be $250
for supposedly 12 kits and the shipping should be $55. Oh such a deal I
didn't see any trucks in the kits

I've been involved in these things on eBay and have learned my lesson. If
they are not all laid out with multiple photos, eBay gives you lots of free
photos, then there tends to be a problem. Usually a big problem, as in missing
parts!!!

I checked the eBay ad Bill mentioned on the READING !-8. The seller has a
feedback of 93%. Lots of red negatives. I'll pass on that one so go for it. The
seller appears to be an auto parts guy. Not necessarily a bad thing. I was, but
not any more, a heavy equipment mechanic for part of my career, and a bad one
at that!

{S-Scale List} Re: mason jars for paint

2013-07-28 Thread ashpan.clinker

Being somewhat incompetent I have stored my Scalecoat in the Scalecoat jars
they are sold in. I've been doing this for years with no problems. Maybe it's
the reducer I use, Xylol. maybe it's that I replace the the O2 with CO2 after
I open the bottle, or it could be the plasma vortex's around here. I think it's
because I make very sure that no lacquer thinner ever comes into contact with
the paint, and I make sure that the bottle is air tight when I put the lid back
on. That means sometimes I have to make a new gasket

The one problem I have had is the no longer available colors, (DRGW Aspen
Gold) and I'm also tired of buying the stuff by the box only to discover that
the regular black, S10, which should dry to a gloss is instead a flat black. I
did cure that by buying a quart of Dupont Centari #99, (Pitch Black). Very odd
thing is it is just like Scalecoat, same odor, same reducer, same results.

This has actually become a mute point. I thought I might get into custom
painting if I tried hard enough. I was charging about $3.25 and hour, I raised
my prices to $4.15 an hour but finally gave up on the whole idea. Everybody
wanted either a special club price or quantity discounts, you know,
---CHEAPER---.

Someone I paint for is MUCH into mixing custom colors - especially for

custom colors. To assure color accuracy he has sent me Scalecoat paint in
mason canning jars. It could be a substantial quantity starting with 3-5 two
ounce bottles. I try to open Scalecoat paint and use the whole bottle in one
sitting for the best results. 6+ ounces of paint will cover a LOT of cars.

Some of the jars have been here for at least a year - probably more. I just
opened a jar and painted a car with great results. I attribute the results
to the storing of the paint in the mason jars.

2013-08-27 Thread ashpan.clinker
I had a halve dozen of the Sunset GP's when they first were brought in
from Japan. The first thing I did was toss out a couple of the drives and
started making my own using NWSL parts. That was back in the last century
before Overland came out with the F units. Once River Raisin sold the
red-drives I yanked the Overland drives out of my F units and used them to
replace the rest of the Sunset GP drives. I opted to make a separate frame for
the drive, and solder the hood and cab to the floor with the railing so it was
all one piece. I've since sold all of my die-sals's. The last pair were the
ones with the unfinished NWSL units. McCoy relieved me from the suffering.

{S-Scale List} Re: Silence can be good at times

2013-09-27 Thread ashpan.clinker

I currently have one each of the REX; 0-4-0, 0-6-0, 2-4-4, 2-6-0on my work
bench. I'm taking out the drivers and replacing them with 110 drivers and to
the NASG specs. I'm also building my own idler gear boxes from brass and will
be using can type motors.

I'm down to an Overland A-A NYC E-7 set to finish painting in Lightening
Stripe. An Overland A-B-B set for UP City of San Francisco. Finish this
stuff and my doing custom painting stuff for hire is over. I had to set aside
the work on the GSC 4 wheel express truck and the rebuilds of the AFC truck in
order to get these models for my customer out of the way.

I'll get the etchings for my new locomotives next week.

I've been tearing apart one of River Raisins USRA 0-6-0's to rebuild it as a
CBQ G-5. I need to make some patterns and parts plus a few other minor details

I stopped making parts for Dan's Train Shop (BrassTrains.com) so I should
soon have lots of free time to build models, and a layout of sorts.

Re: {S-Scale List} Photos With The New Neo Format

2013-09-29 Thread ashpan.clinker
As an owner/moderator of a Yahoo group all you have to do is click on the photo
in the header. My groups use to have a guy with hands on a laptop, no more. You
can't change the photo to one that is in one of the groups albums but you can
upload a new photo from your computer. This of course can only be done by the
owner and I think the moderator. I'm no sure about just moderators though. This
is very easy to do.

I now use Firefox so I'm back to the old system, at least for now.

 Hi Peter;

This appears to be very useful (I have to assume, I'm not Neo-ed yet. Does
 that make me Paleo?)

In any case, may we make this part of a FAQ for the list? I can see that
 being handy for a while.

  Group,

I hadn't visited the groups' Yahoo page in a while, although my account had
been neoed very early on. Wanting to look at the photos people had posted
in the past week, I logged into my account. I found this with regard to
  photos:

To view the photos, click on the Photos topic near the
top of the page, under the Search field. You will then see two
sub-topics, one called Photostream and one called Albums. The Albums get
the default selection. On the far right you will see the New Album purple
button. To its left, however, is a sort-by selection control. If you select
Latest First in that field, you will see the photo albums sorted by the
last date that they were modified.

If you don't want to view the photos by album, you can
just see a raw dump of all the
photos in the reverse order (i.e. newest first) that they were added, by
  clicking on the Photostream sub-topic.

  I don't see Bill's home page
 photo anymore, which I think
is a shame, but I do kind of
like the new interface. I am the
owner/co-owner of a couple of groups, and I do not see anywhere where the
group owner can set the home page photo, so that may be a
feature they got rid of altogether.
  I tried putting
HTML code into the group's description of a group I own, to try to embed a
photo, but Yahoo stripped that off, so there is no way to do this using
  HTML coding, either.

The messages (now called Conversations) can be sorted by topic, message,
or trending (meaning the hotest, most responded to, messages grouped near
the top). Adding a new message can be done via the New Topic purple
button. Once you click on that, you will see a pop-up window. This window
allows you to enter the subject and the message,
and apply all sorts of formatting to the
text. On the left side of the group of text-massaging icons is a paperclip
icon that allows you to attach a file (most often an image file) to your
 message. When you
click that, you will be able to browse your computer's disk drive to look
for the image file that you want to attach to the message.

I hope this info is of use to some of you who have been
neoed.
   - Peter.

Re: {S-Scale List} REX drivers

2013-09-29 Thread ashpan.clinker

I have no plans on selling the drivers. The best option would have been to buy
the 51 drivers from Dan at River Raisin when he imported the USRA 0-6-0's. Any
one that has the REX Mogul or the Suburban, which use 57 inch drivers, your
best option right now would be to order 57 in drivers from Dan before he
finalizes his order of Moguls from Boo Rim.
This does mean that you would have to push one driver off of each non geared
driver assembly and slide off the journals that come installed from Boo Rim.
Then replace with a round bushing to bring the axle diameter up to 3'16 inch
from the factory 4.0 mm. You may even be able to buy the gearboxes from Dan.

Every one should understand that even if I sold the parts, or Dan sold the
parts, or any one else sold the parts, The cost is going to be in the $300
range just to do the conversion from a Pittman permag motor with a worm and
worm wheel to a can motor with an idler gearbox with code 110 drivers instead
of the older code 125 drivers. Driver sets run $80 to $100 a set assembled to
your needs and that NWSL gear box, if even available is now in the $50 range.

I am using driver centers that I made. Some of the driver tires I made and
another local S scaler made some of the driver tires.
I am making the gear boxes from flat brass #360 bar stock. I purchased some
of the NWSL Mod 5 gear boxes that have a 3/26 axle size. That is the size of
the axles used in REX. These gear boxes will not fit the frame of the REX
with out making a huge hole in the frame so I will not use the NWSL box. The
box I am making fits the opening already in the frame. Installing code 110
drivers instead of the code 125 drivers means all of the other mechanism
parts; side rods, main rods valve gear, and crosshead guides do not need any
kind of modification to accept NASG standards driver sets.

Re: {S-Scale List} REX drivers

2013-09-29 Thread ashpan.clinker
I've purchased many products from North Yard in NZ. Mostly the diesel drives
for SW, NW and RS's. They have excellent products!
I'm not a fan of plastic driver centers and nickle plated brass driver tires
though.
About 12 years ago I used some of Alan Gibson's (England) plastic driver
centers as masters and then cast them in brass.

 Rusty,

There's a more economical solution then what you suggest plus you get the
scale 110 48 drivers that are proper for the dockside. I bought drivers,
axles, and bearing blocks ( that happen to fit into the 040 frame perfectly
from a company in New Zealand for about $10 plus shipping. All that remains
is to fabricate a motor mount for a can motor and buy a NWSL gearbox to get
the job done. I got this solution from one of Bill Lanes Buddies, but since I
am so old now I can't remember his name My biggest problem will be to
find someone to quarter the drivers for me.

 Thanks for the reply.
