BY GARY KAMIYA | The same week an Italian court ruled that a woman wearing blue jeans could not have been raped and the Rev. Jerry Falwell, in an ecstatic vision, divined creeping homosexuality in the purple Teletubbie, a nicely coifed Linda Tripp appeared on NBC's "Today" to tell America that she did it all to protect Monica. "I tried to be almost a surrogate mom," Tripp said in a soft, sincere voice. "She often said, 'I wish I had a mom like you.'" With soft sincerity, she spoke of her warm feelings toward Monica. Sincerely and softly, she said, "The notion that [Lewinsky and President Clinton's relationship] was consensual should offend every mother in the country." There was so much sincerity and softness in the air that it would have taken every mother in the country to fumigate the studio. Tripp, 40 pounds lighter and completely made over since her August post-grand jury rehab show bombed on the courthouse steps, was tastefully attired in a checked jacket. Gone were the ungainly wings of hair, which at various times had given her the unwished-for appearance of a vast, demonic Pekingese. The formerly Pullman-size bags under her eyes had been reduced to carry-ons. The Tripp chin, which had tended toward floppiness in her earlier performances, was trimmer and tighter. Before she began her rigorous training for the National Rehab Tour, Tripp's face had an oversize, mannish quality that conjured up unfortunate images of a cackling hag stirring hideous ingredients in a big iron pot. Now her entire face looked more tender, more feminine, as if it had been skillfully sandblasted. Virtually all physical reminders of the bad old Tripp, the double double toil and trouble, hover through the fog and filthy air Tripp had been erased. Tripp's on-camera demeanor also appeared to have benefited from first-class professional de-wicca-ing. Her expression, as reporter Jamie Gangel grilled her, remained sensitive and solicitous. The aggressive, quavering sanctimony of her infamous courthouse-steps appearance, when millions of Americans ran screaming in terror from their houses after she abruptly informed them that "I'M YOU," was replaced by a more low-key, affable persona. Gone was the ineffective Body Snatcher rhetoric; instead, Tripp spoke, apparently from the region of her heart, of her maternal feelings. (It appears not to have occurred to her or her handlers that the idea of Linda Tripp as the Mother of America is a nightmare on an almost Boschian scale, a kind of metaphysical demon wrapped around existence itself.) "This was to protect Monica," she said in all candor. Candidly, she revealed that she had taped her friend to save her life. "She threatened suicide on more than one occasion," she candidly revealed. She also said that she believed President Clinton might have, not to put too fine a point on it, put a contract out on her. "There were threats," she said. But perhaps sensing that this Vito Clintonioni, Linda Tripp has become a stone in my shoe line might not be the best choice, Tripp moved on to other subjects. Flag-waving was her first refuge. Of the taping, she said, "I thought of it as my patriotic duty." She even, in what may have been a slight reach, solemnly reminded viewers that she had been an Army wife for many years. N E X T+P A G E+| NBC: No tears; New York Times: Tears MOMMIE DEAREST | PAGE 1, 2 - - - - - - - - - - At the end of the interview, Gangel said that the country had gone through a long and divisive ordeal, and the upshot had been that Lewinsky's life had been ruined and Clinton acquitted. Was it worth it? "I would do it again," Tripp said. The "Today" appearance was just one tentacle of a multi-armed media strategy that Tripp is employing to transform herself from a comic villain, the Snidely Whiplash of the '90s, into a maternal moral exemplar, the mother America never had. On Monday, she will perform on Larry King, and she has also given an interview to the New York Times in which she reportedly broke down in tears. No tears were visible during the "Today" broadcast. Whether this is because the tears just wouldn't come, she wished for some reason to avoid having them captured on film or the print interview simply made her more emotional remained unclear at press time. Will the National Rehabilitation Tour '99 (has anyone noticed that such tours are now announced without irony or even comment in the media, as if there was nothing peculiar about a private citizen undertaking an enormous PR campaign?) work? From SalonMagazine.CoM I'm sorry, Tinky Winky THE WRITER WHO OUTED THE "GAY" TELETUBBY IN THE WASHINGTON POST APOLOGIZES FOR BRINGING THE WRATH OF JERRY FALWELL UPON HIM. BY MICHAEL COLTON | I'm sorry, Tinky Winky, I truly am. I should have respected your privacy, and kept your bedroom door shut. I shouldn't have exposed your purple, gay soul to an unfriendly world. When noted God-lover and part-time cultural critic Rev. Jerry Falwell decided to target the hit children's show "Teletubbies" this week, for supposedly promoting a homosexual icon, I cringed. Then, like the rest of the country, I laughed. His main ammunition for the attack came from a joke in a story I wrote for the Washington Post, my former employer. Though I never intended to arm the religious right, Falwell's paranoia is oddly flattering. For the record, "Teletubbies" stars four oversized, non-gendered, fetuslike creatures named Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po. They have neither gay nor straight sex, possess no genitalia and don't even masturbate. (Obviously not human.) Instead, they eat "tubby custard," perform "happy dances" and watch TV on each other's stomachs. Occasionally, they hug. They're quite popular among the diapered set. But Falwell, the Virginia evangelist who warned his followers last month of the Jewish antichrist who walks among us, is angered by Tinky Winky's swishy walk. (Some would call it a waddle.) In the February issue of his National Liberty Journal, Falwell alerts parents about the British show's gay agenda, citing circumstantial evidence for Tinky Winky's sexual preference. "Furthering Tinky's 'outing,'" reads the journal, "was a recent Washington Post editorial that cast the character's photo opposite that of Ellen DeGeneres in an 'In/Out' column. This implies that Ellen is 'out' as the chief national gay representative, while Tinky Winky is the trendy 'in' celebrity." He also used the Post article to back his argument on "Today" Thursday morning. The piece was not an editorial -- the Washington Post editorial board tends to ignore Ellen DeGeneres' hipness, or lack of it. It was the Post's Style section's annual In/Out list, which runs every Jan. 1 and gauges the culture from inside the Beltway. When writing the list, I put Ellen and her girlfriend, actress Anne Heche, in the "Out" column, figuring that everyone had tired of the lesbian power couple. I considered using Rupert Everett as the corresponding "In" item. But then I remembered how Tinky Winky, because his size and voice are vaguely masculine and he often carries a red purse, had become a camp icon among gay viewers here and in Britain. (In fact, Salon's Joyce Millman had written about Tinky Winky's gay fans over a year ago.) Tinky Winky is obviously not homosexual, by any stretch of the imagination, but he possesses a few effeminate characteristics (he also likes to wear a tutu on occasion). It's amusing to label him gay simply because the idea of homosexuality -- or any sexuality -- is completely incomprehensible and irrelevant in Teletubbyland, an idyllic countryside populated by giant rabbits, a friendly vacuum cleaner and a sun with the face of a baby. When my piece came out, E! Online picked up the story, saying the Washington Post had outed Tinky Winky by declaring him "in." I had assumed it was a commonly known joke. But the story didn't reach ridiculous proportions until this week, when Falwell stepped in, contributing his own evidence that Tinky's creators have fashioned a gay role model: His antenna is triangle-shaped -- the gay-pride symbol. And his skin is purple -- the gay-pride color. Barney the Dinosaur must be a raging queen. Falwell admits he's never watched the Teletubbies. But homosexuality obviously excites the man, as it did the North Carolina minister who accused Bert and Ernie of being gay companions a few years ago. Remember Falwell's mantra, "Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve"? Now he's criticizing the sinful cohabitation of Tinky Winky and Dipsy, worrying that little boys across the country are running around with purses. It's a ludicrous charge, but one he surely knew would land his name in the papers and on TV once again. And what about that purse? Itsy Bitsy Entertainment, the company that brought the show to America, calls it a "magic bag." Why not? It's no more ludicrous than a friendly vacuum cleaner. Good The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Investigators today were trying to trace a mysterious man who walked through a MARTA car coughing and staggering just seconds before passengers began having trouble breathing. MARTA authorities said today they still have no idea what forced 21 passengers from one car of a southbound train to seek treatment at Grady Memorial Hospital. Doctors sent home everyone except a 14-year-old boy whose throat swelled shut. Hospital staffers inserted a tube to his lungs to keep him breathing, said Dr. Philip Shayne, a Grady emergency room spokesman. The boy was in satisfactory condition today, said Grady spokeswoman Barbara Vogel. "He's doing very well," Vogel said. "His breathing problems are looking better. " Officials shut down the Oakland City MARTA station, disrupting the commute for two hours during the evening rush hour. The station was operating normally today. The FBI's domestic terrorism squad joined the investigation because of reports that a man sprayed something into the train, said Celestine Armstead, spokeswoman for the FBI's Atlanta office. However, Dee Baker, a spokeswoman for MARTA, said investigators had found no one who saw anything sprayed. She said the investigation was centered on a man dressed in "a heavy coat and shorts" who entered the car through a back door at the West End station. The man coughed uncontrollably, gasped out an expletive, walked up the aisle clutching at seats to keep himself balanced and staggered out through the middle door, she said. Seconds later, on the two-minute run to Oakland City, passengers began falling ill. "He seemed to have been exposed to the same thing or something similar as the passengers," Baker said. She said investigators had found no one who noticed the man at West End before or after he passed through the car. She said they were checking to see whether he showed up on security videos at the station. No one saw him spray anything, she said. "He had his hands covering his mouth or holding on to the seats." MARTA Police Chief Gene Wilson said he had conflicting reports about what the man looked like. The first victims were the seven riders, the first MARTA police officer to enter the train at 6:12 p.m., and a MARTA rail supervisor, Wilson said. Of the 21 victims, those most seriously affected coughed, felt tightness in their chests, had eye irritation, felt nauseated and had difficulty breathing. Medical care for the victims began at the MARTA station. Atlanta firefighters hosed off victims, dousing the fully clothed people with a light stream of water. Ambulances took them to Grady. At the hospital, the victims stepped off the ambulances and into plastic decontamination tents. Hospital staffers escorted the victims through a series of showers. Because no one knew what the substance was, Grady workers placed all sheets, towels and materials in red hazardous waste bags. They also drained the shower water into barrels, instead of letting it go into the Atlanta sewer system. Those who were released were given green hospital scrubs to wear because their clothes were confiscated by the FBI to identify the substance, Vogel said. -Caveat Lector- I have to respond a second time to this piece of NurevSpin. Lindbergh was a great American, as was Fr. Charles Coughlin, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and Congressman James T. McFadden, to say nothing of James Forestall and the late, great Senator Joseph R. McCarthy. The Lindbergh baby was killed out of retribution for Senator Lindbergh's valiant attempts to save America from the band of cutthroats that took over with FDR and whose kids and grandkids are behind Clinton, and Bruno Halpern was framed with the (key) help of Norman Schwartzkopf's father, as was detailed in an HBO movie of a few years ago where they just about spilled all the beans, as the Conspirators always like to expose what they did if no one else does -- after sufficient time has elapsed to make it impossible to do anything about their long-ago crimes. Michael Hoffman calls this "The Revelation of the Method", also, The Strange Death of James Forrestal (I think that's the title) and the The Assassination of Senator Joseph McCarthy by Medford Evans sheds light on the probable murder of these two patriots (McCarthy died in Bethesda Naval Hospital at the ripe old age of 49 years old.) Also, the works of Dr. Emmanuel Josephson also shed light on the McCarthy death and hasty burial. In one book, (I think it's The Rockefellers), Josephson reproduces McCarthy's death certificate, which says: Cause Unknown -- contrary to the propaganda put out by the evil Big News Media (unanimously) that McCarthy died of some kind of hepatitis. Incidentally, there is not one article anywhere in the 1950's accusing McCarthy of being a drunk, as did the absurd Movie Tail Gunner Joe, 20 years later. Back to the action: I don't know, but I'm betting Smedley Butler was dead by the end of WWII, so nurev doesn't know what he would have thought, but, again, Smedley was probably a John McCain type political moron. -Caveat Lector- Investigators today were trying to trace a mysterious man who walked through a MARTA car coughing and staggering just seconds before passengers began having trouble breathing. MARTA authorities said today they still have no idea what forced 21 passengers from one car of a southbound train to seek treatment at Grady Memorial Hospital. This sounds very similar to the incidents a few years ago where someone would show up at an emergency room in critical condition, emitting some sort of 'something' which incapacitated the ER personnel... However, Dee Baker, a spokeswoman for MARTA, said investigators had found no one who saw anything sprayed. She said the investigation was centered on a man dressed in "a heavy coat and shorts" who entered the car through a back door at the West End station. A strange getup...if it was warm enough for shorts, why the heavy coat? Except as a means to easily conceal something...but then why not wear long pants, and not call attention to oneself? The man coughed uncontrollably, gasped out an expletive, walked up the aisle clutching at seats to keep himself balanced and staggered out through the middle door, she said. Seconds later, on the two-minute run to Oakland City, passengers began falling ill. Based on this description, my guess is that he was concealing something in the coat, and that whatever the substance was, it accidentally leaked before it was supposed to, thereby contaminating the person carrying it... She said investigators had found no one who noticed the man at West End before or after he passed through the car. It's normal in the Atlanta area for men to wear a 'heavy coat' with shorts? MARTA Police Chief Gene Wilson said he had conflicting reports about what the man looked like. None of which are being provided to the public? -Caveat Lector- Tripp, 40 pounds lighter and completely made over since her August post-grand jury rehab show bombed on the courthouse steps, was tastefully attired in a checked jacket. Gone were the ungainly wings of hair, which at various times had given her the unwished-for appearance of a vast, demonic Pekingese. The formerly Pullman-size bags under her eyes had been reduced to carry-ons. The Tripp chin, which had tended toward floppiness in her earlier performances, was trimmer and tighter. Before she began her rigorous training for the National Rehab Tour, Tripp's face had an oversize, mannish quality that conjured up unfortunate images of a cackling hag stirring hideous ingredients in a big iron pot. Now her entire face looked more tender, more feminine, as if it had been skillfully sandblasted. Virtually all physical reminders of the bad old Tripp, the double double toil and trouble, hover through the fog and filthy air Tripp had been erased. And here we have a perfect example of my contention that the worst cases of sexism and misogyny are to be found in Liberals... Why does how Tripp looks and dresses have ANYTHING to do with the FACTS of the case...if she looked like a runway model, would that give her more 'credibility'? When 'Conservatives' used the same tactics against spokeswomen of the early Feminist movement, Liberals roundly condemned them...but it seems such tactics are perfectly okay against those perceived to be enemies of the 'Feminist' president... Tripp's on-camera demeanor also appeared to have benefited from first-class professional de-wicca-ing. Her expression, as reporter Jamie Gangel grilled her, remained sensitive and solicitous. The aggressive, quavering sanctimony of her infamous courthouse-steps appearance, when Yes, we CAN'T have 'aggressive' women, can we? Aggressiveness is a 'male' trait, and any women who are perceived to have too much of what is considered a positive trait in a male, is viewed negatively -- either she's a 'bitch' or a 'lesbian', perhaps both... Altho it's considered perfectly acceptable by the Left for one of their OWN women to be 'aggressive', ala Bitch Goddess Hillary Klinton, they are the first to resort to sexist remarks regarding any 'aggressive' woman who ISN'T in their camp... Gone was the ineffective Body Snatcher rhetoric; instead, Tripp spoke, apparently from the region of her heart, of her maternal feelings. Yes, 'maternal' feelings demonstrate that she now fits their image of the 'proper role' for a woman...and they wonder why modern Feminism has lost credibility... She even, in what may have been a slight reach, solemnly reminded viewers that she had been an Army wife for many years. Yes, after painting her as an 'ugly hag' (which, according to the Left, is a fate worse than death for a woman), how could it be conceivable that ANYONE ever found Ms. Tripp attractive enough to have married her? That she is NOT some lonely old spinster (another 'fate worse than death' the Left lobs at women they don't like), but rather was married, and had children (thereby fulfilling the 'natural role of women' that the Left pushes)... even with those you ain't supposed to. By MICHELLE BOORSTEIN .c The Associated Press With the closing credits starting to roll on the Clinton-Jones-Lewinsky drama, many Americans and sexual harassment experts have an unexpected prediction -- that women in the workplace will benefit from the whole experience. The public is more aware now of sexual politics and sexual harassment than ever before. And the women -- Paula Jones and Monica Lewinsky -- were seen as decision-makers, regardless of how one viewed their decisions. ``It doesn't help women to be viewed as fragile creatures who have to be protected. We had all that protection in the last century and it protected women out of a lot of really good jobs,'' said Professor Barbara Gutek, an expert on sexual harassment at the University of Arizona. ``I think bringing up discussions having to do with unequal power and what consent means have to be good.'' Most experts agree, however, that the experience has left more questions than answers. Will women be discouraged by Jones' harassment lawsuit being dismissed? Will the Clinton-Lewinsky relationship open the door to more romances between bosses and their subordinates? Have Americans lost the distinction between offensive behavior and harassment? Or do they know the difference for the first time? ``This whole thing definitely had an impact, but it's hard to figure out what it is,'' said Paul Tobias, chairman of the National Employee Rights Institute in Cincinnati. Jones sued Clinton for sexual harassment in 1994, claiming he propositioned her when he was Arkansas governor and she was a state worker. Her lawsuit was dismissed, but while seeking an appeal she settled with Clinton for $850,000. An intern in the White House, Lewinsky denied her affair with Clinton in a deposition for the Jones suit but then admitted it to prosecutor Ken Starr. Margie Harris, a Houston attorney, says people whose complaints don't rise to the standard of harassment come to her citing the settlement Jones won from Clinton. ``People say, `What I suffered was worse,''' she said. ``But the president's case isn't much like reality.'' That, says University of California-Berkeley law professor Marina Hsieh, is because of politics. ``This is a case with a weak legal theory that got as far as it did because a lot of people with a lot of money with political motivation took it forward,'' she said. ``I think everyone looks at the Jones case and says it's all political.'' Caught in the political tides were traditional feminists' groups, most of which came down against Jones on the side of Clinton. And when the Clinton- Lewinsky relationship was revealed, some feminists suggested the young woman was fantasizing the relationship. ``They were reluctant to take Paula Jones' side because her case was financed by a `right-wing conspiracy,' so the traditional allies of Jones didn't appear,'' said Tobias. ``I think that was a setback for the women's groups.'' Polls taken during the yearlong Lewinsky saga suggest most Americans don't believe Lewinsky was sexually harassed, while they were more divided on whether Jones was harassed. Among the results: About three-quarters of those questioned in a Time/CNN poll done last March said the Lewinsky-Clinton relationship would not constitute sexual harassment if ``she willingly consented to have sex.'' About one out of five said it still would be harassment. Asked in an April poll for Newsweek magazine if the judge's decision to throw out the Jones lawsuit sends the message that ``sexual harassment laws are weak and allow men to get away with behavior that is harmful to women,'' just over half said no, while four out of 10 said yes. Asked if women are more or less likely to report sexual harassment after ``seeing what has happened to Kathleen Willey, Paula Jones and Monica Lewinsky,'' just over half said they were more likely to report it. About a quarter said they were less likely, and 11 percent said there was no difference in a Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll done in November. Americans sharply differ over whether it is even possible for a clerical worker like Jones or a 22-year-old intern like Lewinsky to consent to a relationship with someone in such a position of power. ``There's no way you could know anything about this and not think that (power abuse) was an issue in the Lewinsky case, but the whole thing with that underwear, that wiped it out,'' said Dawn Bennett-Alexander, an associate professor of employment law at the University of Georgia. Lewinsky flashed the president a peek at the top of her thong panties during one of their first discussions. ``Those thongs saved him from the allegation that he was trying to use his power in some way,'' she said.

Was Butler finally ready to take a contingent of veterans to Chicago and make the gold-standard speech? Butler displayed increasing skepticism about the whole plan. His visitor whipped a fat wallet out of his hip pocket, extracted a mass of thousanddollar bills, and scattered them all over the bed. The eighteen thousand dollars, he said smugly, would amply cover the expenses of Butler and the veterans he led to Chicago. The gesture caught Butler by surprise; losing his temper, he accused MacGuire of trying to give him thousand-dollar bills whose numbers had been recorded, so that once he cashed them, the plotters would have proof of his complicity. MacGuire hastily assured him that he could have smaller denominations. In his vexation Butler snapped at the bond salesman to take back the money immediately, as he had no intention of getting involved in MacGuire's scheme. But then, as he regained control of his anger, he sought to make it appear that he was merely indignant at being forced to deal with an emissary. He would negotiate, he told MacGuire firmly, only with principals. After some hesitation MacGuire agreed to have him contacted by Robert S. Clark, a banker who had inherited a large fortune from a founder of the Singer Sewing Machine Company. One- week later Clark phoned Butler at his home. They arranged a meeting at the railroad station. Butler instantly recognized the tall, gangling man, hair now steel-gray, who stepped off the train as the lieutenant he had known thirty-four years earlier. Butler drove him home for lunch, during which they exchanged memories of the Boxer Campaign. Afterward they adjourned to the spacious, glassed-in porch, and Clark got down to the business of his visit. He was going to the American Legion convention in a private car attached to the Pennsylvania Limited, he told Butler. He planned to have the train stop at Paoli to pick the general up, and they would continue on to Chicago together. A suite of rooms had already been reserved for Butler at the Palmer House. Clark would see to it, he told the general, that Butler was calling for a resolution demanding restoration of the gold standard. In discussing the speech, the millionaire was induced to reveal that the author was none other than John W. Davis, the 1924 Democratic candidate for President, and now chief attorney for J. P. Morgan and Company. Butler pointed out to Clark that the speech-did not seem to have anything to do with the soldiers' bonus, which was presumably the purpose of his trip to Chicago. Shrugging, Clark blandly repeated MacGuire's assurance that those supporting the speech simply wanted to be sure that the bonus would be paid in gold-backed currency, not in worthless paper. Butler decided to draw blood and observe Clark's reaction. Sharp eyes honed on his visitor's face, he suggested that the speech had all the earmarks of big- business propaganda. The banker, taken aback, did not reply for a moment. He seemed to be debating with himself whether to deny the allegation or take Butler into his confidence. Then he astonished the general by a sudden burst of candor. He had a personal fortune of thirty million dollars, he revealed, and he was greatly worried about losing it to a Roosevelt inflation-runaway government spending unbridled by the need to back each paper dollar with gold. He was willing to spend fully half his fortune if that would save the other half. He was confident that if Butler made the speech at Chicago, the Legion would go on record as demanding a return to the gold standard. That would be an important step toward organizing the veterans of America to put pressure on Congress and the President for such a bill. Why, Butler asked him curiously, did he think the President would allow himself to be pressured by such tactics? Clark expressed confidence that Roosevelt would yield because he belonged, after all, to the same social class that was solidly behind the gold standard. Once he had restored it, his fellow patricians would rally around him and defend his position against criticism. Butler was shocked by Clark's blatant snobbery, but even more by the millionaire's assumption that the wishes of economic royalists should-and would-prevail over the democratic processes of government. I am not as outraged over this issue as may be apparent from my posts on the line, I just can get worked up from time to time! China is sinister and evil (as a nation, not speaking about people here) all they do is contrary to basic human rights etc. That is why I don't like any dealings with them, MFN, sale of technology, etc. I'd rather have them at a safe distance, but then they are in the mesh of international entanglements and cannot be divorced from it, so is the issue one of keeping your enemies closer than your friends in order to keep an eye on them? Gov't Supervision Sought at Prisons By JIM VERTUNO .c The Associated Press AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Federal oversight of Texas prisons should be preserved so long as they remain brutal places where inmates are preyed upon by other prisoners and guards afford little protection, lawyers for the inmates told a federal judge. Closing arguments were made Friday at the end of a three-week hearing to determine whether Texas will reclaim complete control over its prison system or if some federal oversight will be maintained. Inmates appeared during the hearing and testified about sexual and physical abuses that were treated with indifference by prison guards. ``The easily forgotten aspect here is that prisoners are human beings. At some minimal level ... the constitution requires us to respect the rights of prisoners,'' said Donna Brorby, a lawyer for the inmates. ``The bottom line is prisoners are not safe on the cell block.'' Those inmates should not lose their federal watchdog, she said. Attorneys for the state acknowledged that some inmates were victimized. But they argued Texas prisons have improved vastly in the two decades since a federal judge declared the system to be an unconstitutional mess. ``The individual cases are sad, but the state has done what it can to minimize those. No state or prison has been able to wipe it out,'' said Solicitor General Greg Coleman. ``We have arrived at the point where it's time for our prison system to stand on its own two feet.'' In 1980, the federal judge ordered a host of reforms after trial of a class- action lawsuit exposed horrible overcrowding and inmate abuse throughout the system. Supervision of prisons was kept by the federal courts until 1992 when the courts gave back to the state most of the day-to-day controls. The federal courts left in place several orders dealing with prisoner abuse and the provision of adequate medical care. Coleman said the need for those lingering controls has passed, and he pledged that state would not revert to its old ways. ``Whatever constitutional problems that once existed, they are but a memory,'' he said. ``This is a matter of state sovereignty and state pride. We are not looking to terminate the improvements and go backward.'' U.S. District Judge William Wayne Justice -- the very same judge who originally declared the system to be unconstitutional -- has until March 1 to make a ruling.

(AP) -- A South Carolina judge, saying the right of privacy does not extend to driver's license photos, has rejected the state's attempt to halt photo sales to a company that wants them for an anti-fraud system. ``This is not a case involving the traditional concepts of exploitation, appropriation or commercialization of one's likeness,'' Circuit Judge James Williams ruled Friday. The state Public Safety Department sold 3.5 million driver's license photos to Image Data LLC of New Hampshire for $5,000. The company wanted the photos for tests in South Carolina aimed at helping businesses confirm a customer's identity when a credit card or personal check is used. Bob Houvener, president of Image Data, said the system enhances privacy because store customers don't have to show addresses, driver's license numbers and other personal information when making purchases. State Attorney General Charlie Condon had requested an injunction against the sale while the state proceeds with a lawsuit to cancel its contract with Image Data. A Florida judge blocked a similar Image Data deal there and Colorado's governor wants to do the same. ``If your photograph can be bought and sold like a used car, what other personal information goes on the auction block next?'' Condon said. ``What other portion of our life will be deeded away by the government in the future?''

Gold, Silver Suspected Near Japan By MARI YAMAGUCHI .c The Associated Press TOKYO (AP) -- Large sulfide deposits inside underwater volcanoes south of Tokyo could contain vast amounts of gold and silver, Japanese geologists said Friday. About 200 tons of gold and 12,000 tons of silver are believed contained inside the deposits, said Makoto Yuasa, head of marine geology at the Agency of Industrial Science and Technology. A team of agency geologists believe the deposits contain a total of 10 million tons of metals, Yuasa said. He said the deposit's width and thickness are unknown. The probe is part of a government project going on since the 1970s to find undersea deposits. But Yuasa doubted the latest discovery would lead to a Japanese gold rush. ``It's so deep that I would think commercial mining is a bit unrealistic,'' he said. But Yuasa said the deposits were still being formed and were a unique chance for scientists to see the process in action. Similar deposits found on land finished forming millions of years before. Because of the continuing volcanic activity, the site is still spouting hot water -- with temperatures as high as 536 degrees -- from dozens of black chimney-like columns of minerals, Yuasa said. It took the team 10 underwater exploration trips since 1997 to find the deposit after 15 years of observation from boats, Yuasa said. The deposit sits on the eastern rim of Myojin Knoll Caldera in the Pacific, 235 miles south of Tokyo. The caldera, a volcanic crater, is about 4 1/2 miles in diameter and up to one mile deep, he said. He suggested that there might be similar deposits in other previously undetected submarine calderas.

This is the historical legacy that we live with today. Throughout the 1930s and the 1940s the West further manipulated the affairs of the Middle East in order to control the resources of the region and then to create a Jewish homeland in an area long considered central to Arab nationalism and Muslim concerns. Playing off one regime against the other and one geopolitical interest against another became a major preoccupation for Western politicians and their closely associated business interests. Following World War II: After World War II, and from these policy origins, the United States became the main Western power in the region, supplanting the key roles formerly played by Britain and France. In the 1960s Gamel Abdel Nasser was the target of Western condemnation for his attempt to reintegrate the Arab world and to pursue independent "non-aligned" policies. The move will pose a serious threat to British and American planes enforcing Iraq's no-fly zone. In a blatant breach of the UN arms embargo, the Russians have agreed to upgrade and overhaul Iraq's ageing squadrons of MiG jet-fighters and restore Iraq's air defences to combat readiness, diplomatic sources in Moscow have told The Telegraph. The arms deals constitute a serious challenge to British and American attempts to force Baghdad to honour its commitment to dismantle Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. It will also strain Moscow's relations with Britain and the US at a time when President Boris Yeltsin is desperately seeking international assistance for Russia's beleaguered economy. British and American jets have been involved in almost daily military confrontations with Iraq since Operation Desert Fox, the air strikes unleashed against Saddam's military infrastructure by Britain and the US at the end of last year. The Iraqi armed forces have so far failed to shoot down any Allied warplanes because they have to rely on out-dated and unreliable equipment. However, the Russian deal to upgrade Iraq's air force and anti-aircraft missile batteries will bring Iraq's air defences up to pre-Gulf war levels. Apart from earning much-needed foreign currency, Russia's decision to provide Iraq with military assistance was approved by Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov in retaliation for Operation Desert Fox. Russia bitterly opposed launching air strikes against Iraq to punish Saddam for not co-operating with UN weapons inspectors. The Foreign Office said yesterday that it had received reports of the arms deals, which were being investigated. Officials privately confirmed that the deals had been approved by Moscow. A senior Foreign Office official said: "It is almost beyond belief that a permanent member of the security council could authorise such a flagrant breach of the UN arms embargo. It indicates that Russian relations with Iraq have become a great deal closer since Mr Primakov became prime minister." Officials expect Robin Cook, the Foreign Secretary, to raise the issue of Russia's arms sale to Baghdad when he embarks on his much-delayed trip to Moscow. Mr Cook was to fly to Russia in early March, but the trip was yesterday postponed because of his commitments to the current round of peace talks over Kosovo. Details of the arms deals between Moscow and Baghdad have also been passed to the State Department in Washington, where officials have already been alerted to be on the look-out for evidence of arms trading between Russia and Iraq. A spokesman said: "Any attempt by Russia to violate UN sanctions will be a matter of the deepest concern." In Moscow, the Foreign Ministry refused to comment, while officials at Mapo-MiG, one of the beneficiaries of the arms trade, denied any knowledge of the deals. Ahmed Murtada Ahmed Khalil, the Iraqi Transport and Communications Minister, signed the arms deals in Moscow on January 13 and 14 after a visit to Russia by Tariq Aziz, the Iraqi deputy prime minister, in December, days before Operation Desert Fox was launched. He whined that he wished he could vote for "not proven," rather than guilty or not guilty, and thereby let his butt off the hook. At the news conference where John Chafee of Rhode Island announced his decision to vote against both impeachment articles, Chafee refused questions about the secret proceedings. "I don't want to go to San Quentin," he quipped. What these jerks really mean is that they don't want to go up against the Clinton machine, or those who endorse it. In the end, just like John and Jane Q. Public, Chafee may wish he had gone to San Quentin. Instead he's squirming about in the refuse of pretense with all the others who insist that this all proves that the Constitution still works. For example, Orrin Hatch called for an end to the trial without a vote, and Robert Byrd conceded that Clinton had committed high crimes and misdemeanors but would not vote to convict him. These evasive actionsthose of Republican Hatch in particularhave many people wondering whats behind these dodges. Rumors of blackmail are beginning to swirl, and while there may be some truth to them, it doesnt require anything that sinister to make sense of whats going on. One must remember that this ball game is much older than Clintons, er, ball games, and is generally played with one purpose: to avoid being held responsible for something. For example, George Bush is "the president who forgave himself," and Reagan is well known for not knowing what his staff were doing. Dodging responsibility seems to be the favorite game of most elected officials, not just presidents. Who among our lawmakers is willing to take responsibility for the results of his or her actions? Many claim victory when their bills pass the legislature, but this is not the same as being responsible for the law and its consequences. When a teacher gets shot because she isnt allowed to carry her handgun to work, but her ex-boyfriendknowing she is most vulnerable thereattacks her on the playground, will those who acted to restrict her fundamental human right of self defense apologize? Will Clinton, Congress, and local lawmakers offer to make reparations for the harm their actions helped make possible? Who among city councils and county boards will accept their share of responsibility when cost overruns on a sports stadiumthat the voters rejected but the politicians pushed on them anywaymake a tax increase inevitable? Social scientists have a phrase that describes what is at work here: diffusion of responsibility. This idea is used primarily to explain how individuals working in group situationssuch as a big projectview personal accountability as being lower than when one acts alone, but it applies to the political process as well. Diffusion of responsibility allows all participants in the political process to shift the blame for an action or outcome to someone else. It also enables elected officials and government bureaucracies to avoid the scrutiny that might accompany some of their decisions, and to avoid considering possible consequences of those decisions, as they know they wont be held directly accountable for the results. This explains why Hatch doesnt want a vote on the impeachmenta vote would leave a record for constituents to check. Given that the polls indicate that most people believe Clinton is guilty, yet dont want him impeached, senators would be damned if they voted to impeach, and damned if they voted to acquit. Hatchs cowardly option allows a way out of this unpleasant situation with no major repercussions. Diffusion of responsibility also works among the public at large. Many individuals seem to feel that "their duty is complete" once they leave the voting booth, and do not make an effort to educate themselves on laws and bills, or to hold elected officials accountable once in office. Its easy to be cynical about politicians and their promises, but in doing so, citizens act as if their own actions do not matter. People do not feel responsible for what government does, because it no longer seems to be by, of, and for the people. A few hundred miles up the coast in Vancouver, BC, a human rights tribunal ordered a retired newspaper columnist to pay a $2000 fine for promoting hatred toward Jews. Incomparable sums, but the same injustice. Powerful interest groups successfully drew governmental and judicial bodies into arguments of good taste versus bad. As hoped, the authorities scrutinized a citizens right to express what others had deemed a disagreeable opinion. As individuals, the authorities are fellow citizens and peers; but collected in juries and tribunals they have decreed what thoughts we may voice without penalty. Expressible thoughts are far fewer than we had ever assumed. Too late for a viaticum, free speech is dead. No matter how offensive people found either the Nuremberg Trial web site, or the columns by 78-year old columnist Doug Collins, note that none of the authors were charged with a crime for what they wrote, and none faced criminal punishment. Rather, by different routes, the losing sides in each case have been punished in their wallets, and punished for one reason alone: to stop them from expressing their opinions. In the case of the columnist Doug Collins, the $2000 fine is the muscle flexing of an inflated power wrongly created. His sentence fell from a bureaucratic wing of the provincial government known as the BC Human Rights Tribunal. At the foot of its pulpit it drops culprits whom it deems to have violated human rights. Collins, a ranter of underwhelming talent, has made a habit of picking on Jews. His gormless columns retread old Jewish conspiracy theories and lame "inflated Holocaust number" stories. He convinced no readers of his lies, but he convinced many that he is a bitter hack whose career should have seen its zenith after a single appearance in the letters to the editor section. However, according to the Human Rights Tribunal, Collins small minded opinion pieces were not simply nonsense, they served to "repeatedly reinforce some of the most virulent forms of anti-Semitism, and perpetuate the most damaging stereotypes of Jews; that they are selfish, greedy and manipulative and that, through control of the media, they have perpetrated a massive fraud to exaggerate their suffering during the Holocaust." While his views might or might not do all of the above, Collins is guilty only of a mean streak, a rambling style, and a bitter jealousy. (One wonders why these alone were not sufficient to keep his opinions from print, as least as a paid columnist.) In 1997 Collins appeared before the tribunal after the Canadian Jewish Congress complained about a column in which he characterized the movie Schindlers List as "typical Jewish propaganda designed to make money". He escaped reproof then, only to face this retrial for a collection of columns that injured the "dignity and self respect" of a local Jewish man named Harry Abrams. That such an irrelevant columnist could injure Abrams dignity and self respect is plainly sad. Whats worse is that Abrams chose not to simply ignore Collins insulting babble (as most readers do), or better yet to make efforts to educate people why stereotypes of Jews (and other minorities) are low, dishonest, ignorant, and lazy. Instead, Abrams resorted to having Collins censored: Collins is not free to insult any one without facing financial punishment. Bastiats Rights of Man By invoking their mysterious powers to protect through fines what are loosely labeled "human rights", the BC Human Rights Tribunal is violating the very rights and freedoms which make possible its legal existence. Frederic Bastiat explained this critical relationship once and for all in The Law. He wrote: Life, faculties, production in other words, individuality, liberty, property this is man. And in spite of the cunning of artful political leaders, these three gifts from God precede all human legislation, and are superior to it . Since an individual cannot lawfully use force against the person, liberty, or property of another individual, then the common force for the same reason cannot lawfully be used to destroy the person, liberty, or property of individuals or groups. Fining Doug Collins $2000 for expressing his opinion is precisely liberty destroyed. Amazingly the Human Rights Tribunal saw fit to apply its over-extended power to the press. Well, the rain could have washed away the evidence, those oh-so- savvy sources said. But some of the samples were said to have been protected from rain by factory debris, and one was taken from the septic system, which would provide evidence of what went through the plant drains. Most oddly, the owner hired the law firm where Clinton's friend Vernon Jordan is a partner to try to get compensation for the destruction, but nobody - neither the White House nor any agency - will listen. Jury nullification was a Libertarian concept to give people power to offset the power of government in the courts. Like most Libertarian concepts, it's idiotic and unrealistic. All the examples of jury nullification that I'm aware of have been miscarriages of justice. I can't think of a single one where the government suffered from jury nullification. If someone knows of one please post it. The Senate trial was a sham. It did what it was supposed to do. The Senate, an elite club of corrupt millionaires and businessmen, was designed by an elite club of millionaires and businessmen, to be a last bastion of defense for the status quo. The status quo being that plutocracy is the real form of government in the United States, and was designed to stay that way. It's not hard to understand really. Normally both sides compete for the Presidency. But both sides have a lock on the major institutions, effectively keeping out all other players. What you have seen is a genuine dirty fight among the elite class. Most of them understood that it is not to their benefit or that of their corporate owners to make it easy to remove a president. Guilty or not. It's insurance on their huge investments in politics. It is unacceptable to the rulers of America to spend billions and billions of dollars corrupting American democracy and have their flunkies removed by anything as trivial as the law. The issue was never sex. The game was never played out as bribery or treason. Elite history is one of bribery and treason. Clinton knew he was safe. NO ONE TOUCHED BRIBERY AND TREASON. Hey, Kris, sometime man-made junk foods destroy your taste for really good
food, and unctiously sweet smells might seem to be better than nature's
odors -- until you realize your sense of smell was perverted, or maybe your
olfactory nerves have even been temporarily disabled by the man-concocted
smells -- like the way Lysol works.
Now, I admit that I don't know hardly anything about this event -- except
what I've heard for years about "the great" Smedley Butler --- from the same
people who froth and denigrate Lindbergh, McFadden, Joe McCarthy, Fr.
Charles Coughlin and (to a lesser extent) Henry Ford (better not say too
much against him lest people wonder how the guy that was so insightful in
bringing them the car could be so far off on politics). SO -- all this
praise from thinkers like Nurev does NOT make me inclined to believe in the
greatness of Smedley Butler, especially when he said "He's the greatest."
Wow! That must mean he's the typical "educated" goy like G. Gordon Liddy who
acts tough on every other subject, but when it comes to the dominant Jewish
Lobby says, "Saddle up and ride me anyway you want."
Incidentally, your brief explanaton on how MacArthur and the Veterans figure
into this was not very helpful to increase my understanding of this. If you
have time, I would appreciate a brief but comprehensive summary of this
incident as told by the pro-Smedley people.
I will stand by my statement: America now needs a Pinochet. The top
Judeo-Masons at the 4 Big Networks, the Federal Reserve Board, the CIA, and
the FBI need to be rounded up (that would take an afternoonJ) and put on
trial for the treason against this country, especially in treason in favor
of our greatest enemy of all time: Israel. This is what happened in every
Catholic country in the Middle Ages, and why Jewish leaders worked so hard
to topple all the monarchies of Europe, which were bulwarks FOR the people
and AGAINST their evil machinations. So now there are voices (believe me,
I'm the mildest) calling for similar action again, in my case, against a few
evil leaders.
THEN, and only THEN, could we get back to enjoying our Constitution, with a
few additional safeguards against evil-doers and promoters and apologists of
evil-doers (probably like yourself). Evil-doers: abortionists, usurers,
pornographers, public promoters of the Homosexual Lobby, spy-traitors who
have greater loyalties to other countries (primarily Israel), etc.
Don't you see, or don't you want to see? The current Ruling Elite has STOLEN
the entire country through tricking Congress (probably corrupt even then)
into handing over our country's money (1913), which allowed them to buy all
the Big Media outlets (1930 to 1950's) and now to operate computerized
RIGGED elections for the last 25 years, leading by now to the purging of
almost every person in office who will stand up to this evil Ruling
Judeo-Masonic elite, with the most recent editions being to start national
corporate chains with unlimited financial backing and the best of everything
from the beginning -- which in turn is turning the country into a nation
comprised of three classes: 1) owners (Ruling Elite) and talented
cooperators, 2) managers (who, like in Communist countries) get a pretty

I don't think our politicians (most of them) even try to pretend America gives a damn about human rights throughout the world anymore. It's all about business interests and the economy. As for China, for all I know, it's about keeping the opium-trading business healthy. It's important to note, as I haven't seen it mentioned here yet, that Clinton continued a policy of supplying missile technology to China. It was begun in the Reagan years and continued in the Bush admin. I don't think Clinton is the "second-coming" or the "antichrist" and find generalizations like that insulting. His foreign policy makes him look like a Bush clone, and makes a strong argument for the assertion that all our Presidents are controlled by the same forces. Reminds me of LBJ. He made great strides with civil rights and aid to the poor, but his Viet Nam initiatives were abhorrent. L. Fletcher Prouty, in his book, "Secret Team," makes a strong case for Johnson being manipulated by his intelligence/military advisors. Perhaps all Presidents have been since Truman. There is no doubt in my mind that the "permanent" employees on the Hill and in the Pentagon pull the biggest strings. The police let the teenage girls go but detained the mother. The next day, North Korean police came to the family's house in the northern city of Hyesan and demanded a $125 bribe - a fortune for poor North Koreans - to release the woman from one of North Korea's labor camps, the girls said. With a father so malnourished that he is unable to work, and with no savings, the family had no way to get her out of detention, they said. Until a gut-wrenching solution was found. A North Korean businessman with contacts in China promised to raise the money. His price? The girls. The girls said he told their father that there were many men in China who needed wives. He assured their father that he would settle the girls near the border, and with such relatives, the businessman said, the family would have the right to go to China. ''I was willing to be a bride so my mother could be free,'' said Han Jin O, an extremely thin 15-year-old who looks barely 12. ''I wasn't going to let them sell my sister.'' Han Eu No is 13. The Han sisters are part of a river of girls and women that is flowing out of North Korea as the isolated Communist country stumbles further toward famine and self-destruction. As many as 2 million people are feared to have perished in North Korea since food shortages swept the country in the mid-1990s, and refugees and aid officials on the border paint a picture of a society in desperate straits. Malnutrition and hunger are the norm, the all-consuming search for the next meal the obsession. (Page 3). Their countrymen, therefore, are turning the women and girls of North Korea into chattel to be traded for food and money. According to officials of private aid agencies working in North Korea, an increasing number of young women, many in their early teens, are being smuggled out and sold to Chinese farmers and laborers from across the country who have trouble finding wives. Other women and girls are sold to karaoke halls and brothels, which line the grimy streets of small cities in northeastern China. But most are sold to single men from villages that many young Chinese women have abandoned for what they see as the brighter vistas of bigger cities. Aid officials said they had no estimate on the number of women streaming into China. But several said they believed the number of smuggled women was increasing. The reason, they said, is that North Koreans already have cannibalized a large portion of their factories and clear-cut a large part of their forests to trade to China for grain. ''They need other things to trade,'' a South Korean aid worker said, ''so they are trading their girls.'' Chinese smugglers here, engaged in moving everything from spare parts to cars and women from North Korea to China, corroborated this view. In their den, a circle of three houses on Chinese territory just opposite the North Korean city of Musan, two acknowledged that the four women they were keeping in one of the red brick buildings were North Korean and bound for customers in China. ''They don't have anything else,'' said one of the men, referring to his North Korean partners. ''We've cleaned out the mine and the chicken farm,'' he said, speaking of what had been Musan's two biggest industries. ''Now we are taking their pretty girls.'' A person involved in the trade in Yanji, a regional center, said the price for a ''North Korean miss'' ranged from $800 to $1,150, depending on her age, looks and health. Health was very important, he said, because so many of the girls were malnourished and gaunt. He had arranged for the marriage in January of one woman who was smuggled to China. Kim Jin Hai, 23, of Hyesan and Piao Erzi, a 26-year-old ethnic Korean farmer, married in a village near Helong, about 30 miles from the border. Mr. Piao said that his new wife was the daughter of well-placed local officials in North Korea, but that even they had determined life at home was deteriorating. But she disagreed. ''Everything was fine at home,'' Mrs. Kim said. ''We lived better than these peasants.'' Mr. Piao countered, ''So why did you come to China?'' -Caveat Lector- Edward: Thank you for your kind words. I was once as much a liberal (or maybe socialist would be more accurate) as any on this list. So I understand that those who may advocate this or other similar philosophies. I am not a libertarian because I wish to see anyone harmed but rather because I see the libertarian political philosophy as the best way for everyone to achieve greater happiness. Yet, I can understand the concerns of others and respect their opinions, even we they differ. However, on many occasions I have had "liberals" not fulfill their agreements to me. They did this all while thinking the best of themselves because they thought they knew better what was the best for all involved. (I am sure others have had the same experience with "conservatives", I haven't). The story I told of my orchestra piece awhile ago was one example. The laws which govern us are similar. They are agreements between people. When a government official breaks his word, especially in a court situation, he breaks an agreement with us all. Clinton has done this and it is proved that he has done this. Yet he still remains. Yes, the effects of this will not be light. MARTA authorities said today they still have no idea what forced 21 passengers from one car of a southbound train to seek treatment at Grady Memorial Hospital. Doctors sent home everyone except a 14-year-old boy whose throat swelled shut. Hospital staffers inserted a tube to his lungs to keep him breathing, said Dr. Philip Shayne, a Grady emergency room spokesman. The boy was in satisfactory condition today, said Grady spokeswoman Barbara Vogel. He's doing very well, Vogel said. His breathing problems are looking better. Officials shut down the Oakland City MARTA station, disrupting the commute for two hours during the evening rush hour. The station was operating normally today. The FBI's domestic terrorism squad joined the investigation because of reports that a man sprayed something into the train, said Celestine Armstead, spokeswoman for the FBI's Atlanta office. However, Dee Baker, a spokeswoman for MARTA, said investigators had found no one who saw anything sprayed. She said the investigation was centered on a man dressed in a heavy coat and shorts who entered the car through a back door at the West End station. The man coughed uncontrollably, gasped out an expletive, walked up the aisle clutching at seats to keep himself balanced and staggered out through the middle door, she said. Seconds later, on the two-minute run to Oakland City, passengers began falling ill. He seemed to have been exposed to the same thing or something similar as the passengers, Baker said. She said investigators had found no one who noticed the man at West End before or after he passed through the car. She said they were checking to see whether he showed up on security videos at the station. No one saw him spray anything, she said. He had his hands covering his mouth or holding on to the seats. MARTA Police Chief Gene Wilson said he had conflicting reports about what the man looked like. The first victims were the seven riders, the first MARTA police officer to enter the train at 6:12 p.m., and a MARTA rail supervisor, Wilson said. Of the 21 victims, those most seriously affected coughed, felt tightness in their chests, had eye irritation, felt nauseated and had difficulty breathing. Medical care for the victims began at the MARTA station. Atlanta firefighters hosed off victims, dousing the fully clothed people with a light stream of water. Ambulances took them to Grady. At the hospital, the victims stepped off the ambulances and into plastic decontamination tents. Hospital staffers escorted the victims through a series of showers. Because no one knew what the substance was, Grady workers placed all sheets, towels and materials in red hazardous waste bags. They also drained the shower water into barrels, instead of letting it go into the Atlanta sewer system. Those who were released were given green hospital scrubs to wear because their clothes were confiscated by the FBI to identify the substance, Vogel said. I think so, because he would probably be doing backdoor stuff to enrich himself while decrying China to the world at large, and wouldn't get caught like Clinton did/is. Therefore what is the point of supporting party politics at all? The issue of China is just what "they" need to try and rally support for "their" agendas whether for or against in the great Hegelian Dialectic that is constantly unfolding all around us. In my experience, only a very few devices that have been demonstrated that worked, none being free energy or gravity control, so it's been disappointing but most of the time, the speakers make it worthwhile. As Dale points out, this April conference in Washington is disturbing because they are requiring your SSN to attend. Now, any free energy conference sounds wonderful and I'm not paranoid or a conspiracy buff but something just doesn't seem right with this one.
