I'm so sorry I did not check my mail during the call. :-(

No problem

We did catch this problem on the IRC, and all had to use the
moderator's PIN in the end (as you will have read)...
I had problems to join on the IRC as well: I am not that not much of an
IRC user, but usually I manage, but not via the link in the Wiki. Could
you add some info how to join?

However, I plan to propose another confcall in the very near future,
and will also be writing up this one at a page I created on the wiki
[1]. So you will be able to read up on the discussions.

Would be great, I will add my comments, questions, suggestions there.

My sincere apologies for this disappointment... I was able to log in
the other day when I tested... Next time I will ensure we don't have
this kind of problem.
It was indeed a bit of a disappointment, especially as I managed to call
in at the end of the conversation, but I did not have that many comments
on these last items on the agenda. I love the idea of sharing comments
with people from different places on the globe, living in totally
different time zones. But good to know, there will be next possibilities.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] How about creating manuals in mediawiki (and then export to odt and pdf when required)?

Hi all,

I do not know if this is the right forum (and the right time) to put this idea,
but why are we circulating odt/pdf files for proofreading?

I have written a 380-page user manual in odt; and also written several help
docs in wiki format.
The difference was odt writing was a single-author effort, but wiki was
supposed to be collaborative.

Besides, mediawiki has extension that can export to odt/pdf any time and make
it available for offline reading or printing.

See the example here: http://www.den4b.com/wiki/ReNamer
At the time of starting the wiki, I already had written most of the manual in
odt format.
So I saved the individual chapters in mediawiki format, and pasted them in the
wiki pages.
I had to upload all figures separately and link them. But on the whole the
experience was smooth.

Wiki also eliminates the proofreading effort, as the others can directly edit
the original effort.

Just my two cents.

Narayan

Isn't it a good idea to use LibO to describe how to use it? ;-)
I have been translating OOo guides and learned a lot about the software

Hi,

Sigrid,

Link works for me.

Thanks Andy.

What I find very strange is, that I have manager rights on oooauthors,
I see the review list, but I can't see this folder.

I checked the rights that I had, changed them, logged off and on again
- and still nothing changed. I can't see any content in this folder.

Btw, I also don't see an English folder in the left bar when I go to
oooauthors, I only see it, when I add /english to the url manually.

That's so strange.

Sigrid

I have similar rights as Sigrid and facing similar problems. How can I
solve these?

The default language inside the Plone CMS of OOoAuthors.org is language
neutral. This
is the only setting, which guarantees, that all members can see the directory
and
it's content. You can translate the folder with LinguaPlone to another
language. This
means that every user with the language setting according to the translation
will see
the translated version in that language. The other members (with no available
translation) will see the default folder (with language neutral setting).
You can realise the misconfiguration, if you change your language setting by

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] documentation at oooauthors

2010-12-10 Thread Leo Moons

Hi Jean,

The latest version of the draft LibO Getting Started guide chapters are
here: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation

Ron Failes took all the published chapters and applied the new LibO
template to them. However, as far as I can tell, no other changes have
yet been made, for example changing OpenOffice.org to LibreOffice
(except on the title pages), and the list of contributors to the OOo
chapters does not appear in the LibO files that I checked. Other changes
that were made to the draft chapters have not been made to the latest
ones, either, so whoever works on these will need to do all of that
again. Comparing them with the draft chapters would help with those
updates, but not if you cannot get to the drafts.

The files are very much NOT ready for translation. In fact, IMO they are
not ready to be put on the LibO site, where other people can find and
copy them.
That is what I realised as well, but I was eager to find out what you
were all talking about and which progress was made and see if there is
any way I could help.

But as you will have understood from Andreas, the problem is solved. :-D

Some time ago, David Nelson urged me to take on that role. I declined,

am reconsidering my choices.

A question to you, the members of the LibreOffice Docs team (and other
interested people): in the hypothetical situation that I stick up my
hand for the Docs team leader role, would you consider me suitable?

Some of you know my style from OOo. I'm a pragmatist: while I'd love to
have us maintain a workflow that includes good reviews (both technical
and editorial), I think it's more important to get information out there
as quickly as possible in a form that's suitable for the general
audience. In other words, if enough people are not available to do
reviews quickly, then I tend to publish early and clean up any errors
later. Similarly, I prefer to have no info on a topic than hold up
publication until the info can be obtained and verified; missing info
can be added as it becomes available.

I'm also 100% in favour of maintaining the source docs for the user
guides in ODT format, which enables us to publish them in numerous
formats relatively quickly and easily. This is what we're doing now. (An
additional benefit is that using ODT files enables people to work on the
user guides without needing to have Internet access while doing the
work.) And lastly, writing documentation for an office suite using any
method other than the office suite itself strikes me as a very bad
advertisement for one's product.

Hoping to hear from you on my question in the second paragraph.

[libreoffice-documentation] Calc guide 3.3

2013-02-24 Thread Leo Moons

Hello,

As we are upgrading the translated Calc guide from 3.3, I would like to
have a copy of the Calc guide 3.3 for OpenOffice.org. We have a
translated version, but would like to have the English version so we can
compare the English version with the later version so we can more easily
spot the differences.

Can anyone send me a pointer to where the find it, preferably the
different chapters in odt format.

Many thanks
Best regards

[libreoffice-documentation] Correction to the Getting Started Guide

2013-02-27 Thread Leo Moons

Hello,

I would propose 2 correction to the first chapter of the GS guide:
- page 7: Minimum requirements: LibreOffice 3 ... should read
LibreOffice 4 ...
- page 13: Zoom slider and percent; I would delete and percent as
percentage is described in next paragraph

Good luck with the good work.

No, it is not normal. In fact, I changed yesterday the workflow on the
website, and this was the result of this.
I quickly published all the language folders, so that you should be
able to see everything again.

What I did not do, was publishing the subfolders - that has every
language group now to do themselves.
First change state to internally published, once this is done,
change to externally published.

Then everyone can see those folders.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Dear community,

from September 24 to 27, this year's annual LibreOffice Conference takes

place in Milano, Italy. It is the major annual event for all LibreOffice
contributors, supporters, adopters and users, and will be jointly hosted
by the Milan University together with the LibreOffice community.

We hereby announce that the Call for Papers will be extended until
August 22, and invite all of you to send in your talk proposals for the
conference.

Whether you've been developing cool and exciting features, are using
LibreOffice in your corporation, or would like to talk about the
OpenDocument format ecosystem at large, send in your talk and present it
to a large and diverse audience at LibOCon 2013!

All details to the CfP are available at
http://conference.libreoffice.org/2013/en/call-for-papers

Looking forward to your proposals!

I am unable to attend LibOCon this year. (The trip from Australia is
too long.) It would be very good to have someone from the Docs Team
there. Even better would be for someone to present a talk about our
work. I can put together a presentation if someone can deliver it.
It is a pity you cannot attend, but I see you are on the list of the
speakers ;-)
I will be attending as I am lucky to live on the same side of the planet
and travelling is not that long for me.
I have put forward a presentation about the translation of the users
guides, so maybe I can broaden my talk and speak about documentation in
general as well. Seen that so many speakers have enrolled, I do not
think I can have 2 presentations.
If anybody from the Documentation team is willing to present, no problem
for me.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Account...

2014-07-26 Thread Leo Moons

Hello Tom,

Although it is a late reply, the truth has its merits (if that is an
English idiom?)

The Dutch speaking community uses ODFAuthors site to publish their
translations and is involved both in documentation and in-built Help.

Best regards

Leo

Hi :)
I like the css method of commenting out.

I think the ODFAuthors site only deals with the English (US) versions of
the published guides. Those are an extremely low priority for
translations teams despite the fact that the English versions generate a
small but useful income for the Documentation Team and wider community.

Translators put a much higher priority on translating the in-built help
which the Documentation Team don't get involved with at all. The closest
'we' get is translating the Frenceplyh wiki's Faq but hopefully that might lead
to working on the in-built help's wiki. However that part of the team is
tiny and could use any help. Even a tiny amount of time would be a huge
help there. Wiki-markup is much simpler than css but once you start moving
into the in-built help your skills might become more useful to the tiny
team there. Translation teams coordinate through the
l...@global.libreoffice.org
mailing list.

Errr, i use the sarcastic quotes ' around 'we' because i don't actually do
any work in this team at all. I just lurk here to try to liaise with other
lists, particularly the User Support Mailing List to help them learn the
best links into documentation.

Regards from
Tom :)

I do a bit now and then, but I have not been doing it consistently,
have no intention of doing it consistently, and will probably be doing
even less in future. I've been saying this for months, but is anyone

If we can't find one or more volunteers to take on this sort of
responsibility, perhaps we should make a case for TDF to fund someone,
at least part time? IMO we would need to hire someone with experience
in technical communication, project management, and mentoring new team
members. Preferably someone with experience coordinating volunteers,
so they don't have inappropriate expectations of giving people
assignments and getting the work done to a schedule. (No, I'm not
looking for a job.)

I'm not at all sure that would help enough, because we would still
need people who have both the time and knowledge to do the actual
work. Our problem, AFAICT, has not been in attracting volunteers. The
problem is attracting -- and keeping -- the right volunteers: that is,
people with the time and knowledge.

BTW, I find it both encouraging and discouraging to note that the AOO
Docs group appears to have the same problems that we do.

[libreoffice-documentation] Request from the Dutch translation team

2014-09-07 Thread Leo Moons

Hello,

We are finishing the translation of Writer Guide and Calc Guide 3.x and
started translating the Getting Started Guide 4.0.
As we have limited resources and do not know where to continue, we
thought that we'd better concentrate on what users are mainly looking
for. As it is difficult to gauge this, we thought that the sale of the
hard-copy books could assist us and therefore we would ask if somebody
(Jean? - I know you have limited access to internet these days, so
please do not rush) can tell us about the number of copies which have
been sold so far of GSG, WG and CG.

Of course, I am posting a similar question to the Dutch users mailing list.

[libreoffice-documentation] Getting Started with Calc and also in other chapters in the Getting Started Guide

2017-01-23 Thread Leo Moons

Hello,

While translating chapter 5 we, the Dutch speaking community, found
something odd: a reference is regularly made to the Calc Guide for more
info and/or explanations. This reference is often made at the beginning
or somewhere in the middle of a paragraph and we believe it should be
better mentioned at the end of the paragraph as the reader is invited to
read the Calc Guide and not continue reading the Getting Started Guide.

Would you agree? If so, I do not think there is a need to change all the
chapters of the GSG 5.1, but it would be good to have these changes
incorporated as from GSG 5.2.

COVER PAGE

Cover page and back page (consensus by Doc team)
Proposal by Leo Moons, but:
+ The header has a wrong logo.
I thought that page icon and the LibreOffice word were two separate
logo's which could be combined in a way I wanted and therefore included
Documentation Team in a whole new logo. If this is not allowed, I can
live withe original from Dave. What about to ask permission

+ The header color is not the 6.0 branding color
It is a gradient from LibreOfiice Green 0 to LibreOffice Green 3, using
LibreOffice tool.

What about to ask permission to use my "new logo" and my colour gradient?

+ The "Documentation team" must be in the body,
  + above the Title
  + out of the logo
  + Restore logo to official
+ Keep body, icons, footer, background as is

AI: ask Design team for help in fixing the branding issues (olivier)
The footer is too bright for me. I am in dubio as I know it is the
offical LibreOffice colour, which is nice for letters but not for an
area (IMHO). I will try and come with a better idea. I am also thinking
about including the documentation team logo with the coloured figures as
printed on mugs and buttons. I will let you know.

Keep up the good work

After going through the meeting notes (which I could not attend), I though that
it maybe a good idea to air my views about writing standards.

The following ideas come from my experience in working within Simplified
English rules when I worked for Airbus and Ericcson.

1. Paragraphs no more the six sentences long.
2. Sentences should only contain a maximum of 20 words, with the occasional
sentence allowed to be 25 words.
3. Never use the possessive apostrophe (for example Peter’s). Rewrite the
sentence to remove the need for a possessive apostrophe.
4. Never use contractions of words (for example: don’t becomes do not; won’t
becomes will not, and so on)
5. Never use Latin abbreviations (for example: etc becomes and so on; e.g.
becomes for example; i.e. becomes that is).

There are many more rules, but the above basic rules are a good start. They are
designed to make English text easier to translate into other languages and that
is why it is called Simplified English.

Please let me know your opinion.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] CG7001-Introduction Reviewed and in Feedback NextCloud

2020-08-01 Thread Leo Moons

Hej Steve,

When reviewing the whole book of Calc Guide 6.4, I had some general
remarks about the figures but due to time constraint I did not pass them
on as it could have delayed the guide too much, but now I would like to
comment as follows:
- the figures have sometimes no border, a green border, a blue border, a
black or grey border. I think we should look for consistency for a nicer
appearance.
- sometimes the text in the screenshot cannot be read as texts are too
small; this can be because the figure is too small and can be enlarged
(beware of the resolution) or the object is too big and does not fit on
a page and therefore the screenshot is made smaller. One could consider
in splitting the picture or partly removing unnecessary parts.

Keep up the good work and we will be happy to translate it! FYI 13
chapters of the Calc Guide 6.4 have already been published in Dutch!

Op 1/08/2020 om 11:41 schreef Steve (GMail):

Hi Gordon,

Many thanks for your thorough first review of this chapter. I'm a
little embarrassed that I didn't spot the erroneous description of the
characters that can be used in sheet names!

I have processed all comments and the chapter is now back in the Draft
folder with no tracked changes, ready for second review.

A few matters arising from your queries and suggestions:
With regards to adding the URL of the Getting Started Guide. As far as
I’m aware we don’t tend to include cross-links like this in any of the
guides. Bear in mind that Calc Guide, Chapter 0 includes a link to the
English Documentation page of the LO website, where copies of all the
guides can be found. If we include the URL for the Getting Started
Guide in this chapter then we’d have to be consistent and include URLs
in any of the chapters that reference other guides. There’s a lot of
these references and I don’t think it would be advantageous to
introduce this extra clutter.
With regards to the differences between the Save As dialog on Windows,
Linux and macOS. I don’t think we need to expand on this because
Chapter 0 states that there will be some differences - “Therefore,
some illustrations will not look exactly like what you see on your
computer display”.
With regards to providing other links about regular expressions. I
think we have now expanded this topic so that it is covered adequately
in the guide. For me, the purpose of our guides is not to provide
exhaustive sets of links to other sites. I don’t think it’s a
copyright issue but we do need to be aware that providing a link can
be interpreted as somehow implying a recommendation. I hope we’ve now
provided enough information for our users to get started with regex
and hence don’t see the need for providing additional links; those
interested can probably discover 100s of links via Google. This is
covered by the existing text “There are numerous websites that include
examples of regular expressions and these provide an endless source of
inspiration and ideas to help improve your data analysis skills”.
With regards to your idea about embedding spreadsheets in the Writer
file for this chapter. In principle of course this is possible but
wouldn’t be very helpful for anybody using a printed copy of the
guide! And I’m not certain how useful it would be in PDF versions of
the document. But beyond that, I am against the idea because of the
work involved in doing it consistently. The examples you’ve cited
happen to be in an area of new text, written for this update. However
throughout that Calc Guide there are many spreadsheets and spreadsheet
fragments; I don’t think it is a worthwhile investment of our time to
go through all chapters replacing relevant images with embedded
spreadsheets, for very little gain. I also feel that the associated
explanatory text (“Double click on the first box below, highlight,
copy, and paste into your own spreadsheet to follow the example”) is
unnecessary clutter because it isn’t hard to follow the examples just
by reading what’s already written. I understand that some readers
might like to try it themselves but we’re writing a guide, not a
workbook.

Regards,

Steve

number also links to same Set Reference. Do we really need the second
link; do we really need to even have "on page x"?
I think both should remain; the link is meant for those reading the
guide on an electronic device and therefore clocking on the link, brings
the user to the right place. For those reading a hard copy, the page is
the only reference which guides them.

2) In section, Submitting a chapter for review, the chapter is suppose
to be uploaded to the Feedback folder. It has already been uploaded to
the Draft folder in the section, Creating a completely new chapter
step 3. Are we suppose to have a copy of this chapter in both folders?

Otherwise, I have almost completed my review.

Dan

Best regards

Leo

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Publishing the 6.4 Calc Guide

2020-06-15 Thread Leo Moons

Go for it Steve!

Thank you

Leo

Op 15/06/2020 om 11:52 schreef Steve (GMail):

All,

All chapters of the 6.4 Calc Guide have been updated and completed
their first reviews. Many have also completed second reviews.

In order to move our endeavours on to the 7.0 Calc Guide, I would like
to publish the 6.4 version as soon as possible.

There are eight chapters that still theoretically need a second
review. However the tracking spreadsheet indicates that none of these
chapters are currently being worked on by anybody. Also these chapters
went through a full review cycle at 6.2 and so the risk of omitting a
second review now doesn't seem great. Therefore I propose to start the
process of issuing the Calc Guide ("as is") with immediate effect.

This task will require a few days effort from me, as I have not
published one of our books before. Also I would like to enable the
alphabetical index at the end of the book and improve it to a useful
state.

If anybody has a problem with this approach, please advise as soon as
possible.

Regards,

Steve

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] 6.4 Calc Guide

2020-06-22 Thread Leo Moons

Hej Steve,

I will scan through the 6.4 Calc Guide. Is it possible to have the odt
version in NextCloud, so I can make a note if necessary.

Many thanks
Best regards

Leo

All,

The 6.4 Calc Guide is, I believe, almost ready for publication. The
PDF version is available for inspection in the relevant Published
folder in Nextcloud (CG64-CalcGuide.pdf).

If anybody wishes to have glance at the PDF over the next 24 hours
then feel free to do so; please email me if you spot any problems.

I am not happy with the front and back pages. These are SVG format
images in the .ODT file but lose something in the translation to PDF.
Is this a known effect and is there a recommended solution?

One aspect of the document has not yet been reviewed by anybody and
that is the alphabetical index at the back. I would encourage any team
members to inspect this and let us know your thoughts. I hope it is a
useful addition for the intended readers of the guide but others might
think otherwise. It is straightforward to remove it before publication
if that proves necessary.

Finally, please could one of our experienced publishers advise me of
the steps necessary to actually publish a guide (beyond placing all
the files in the Published folder)?

Regards,

Steve Fanning

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] 6.4 Calc Guide

2020-06-22 Thread Leo Moons

Hej Steve,

I had some remarks about some figures, but they are of lower priority
and therefore I would suggest to take them into consideration for
version 7. On the other hand I have some more relevant remarks, which
you might consider:

 * both in the contents and the book: in the title of the chapter there
is a reference to Calc or LibreOffice, which seem unnecessary to me
as it is a guide about Calc:
o Chapter 1: could read "Introduction" - subtitle could read
   "Using spreadsheets" (page 14)
o Chapter 5: could read "Using Graphics" (page 183)
o Chapter 10: could read "Linking Data" (page 334)
o Chapter 12: could read "Macros" (page 382)
o Chapter 14: could read "Setting up and Customizing" (page 433)
o Appendix B: could read "Error Codes" (page 484)
 * I would keep Chapter 13 "Calc as a Simple Database" as is
 * Table 2 has an old style (page 46)
 * On page 245, there is a table without table heading and it has no style
 * If I am correct Drew's surname is Jensen and not Jenson (page 2)
 * I very much like the alphabetical index! (page 490 ...)

Thanks for the great job!

Best regards

Leo

Hi Leo,

Many thanks for helping.

In this case, would it be possible for you to email a list of any
comments you want to raise? I have avoided editing the "big" .odt file
(apart from the first and last few pages) to avoid introducing
inconsistencies with the individual .odt files that we previously
updated and reviewed.

Regards,

Steve
