Re: [drakelist] Drake L7 PS Question
Randy, I hope you get some MUCH more informed answers than mine, but to answer your question quickly "NO"!! Do not use anything other than the high voltage wire and connectors you have already on the Drake. It is designed to handle the voltage, while smaller wire and an RCA connector would not handle it. You may need to find some help if you are not familiar with this type wire and connectors, but I'm sure your connector can be repaired, or at worst, replaced. Wait till some of the more expert Drakesters check in, with ideas (maybe even pictures of the procedure) but be safe, and don't substitute anything for what you need. 73, Don, WB5HAK

Don and Diana Cunningham [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Keith, As Garey so eloquently said, this is only ONE man's opinion, but I will agree with the R4B being the best of the receivers you mentioned. I like the mellow sound, both on SSB and AM shortwave stations, and the built-in passband tuning and filter widths is a definite plus for casual use. Yes, the color coded crystals refer to the built-in crystals, and only effect transceive mode, which is handy for casual SSB conversations with the T4XB. Good luck with your vintage Drake! By the way, Garey was too nice to toot his own horn, but the CD he produces for the 4 B line is fantastic!! Well worth the money just for the time savings finding the components on boards. Re: [drakelist] wondering out loud re: DOA MN-2000
Peter, You will likely get several opinions on this, but my first reaction would be to take the seller up on his option to return the unit for a refund. Parts are mostly "unobtainium" except from other defective units. In the earlier days, when Drake still had parts, I would give a different answer, but it is getting extremely rare to find what you need to adequately repair these units unless it is simply connections, ceramic standoffs, shaft couplings, etc that some of us might have in our junk boxes. Switches arced (contacts blown off) are more often what I used to find, and they were expensive WHEN we could get them, hi. Good luck, either way you go. 73, Don, WB5HAK

Sometimes you only have to take the screw out of the board, and move it up and down some to clean the contacts, but I usually had to take the DR-7 out and put some DeOxit on the pins and in the socket to clean the contacts enough to make this stop. Some have said they found cold solder joints on that plug (actually soldered from the bottom of the motherboard, as I remember, but I have not found that here. I was lucky years ago with self healing (drying of wafers) from spray cleaners. Reports are that the rig in question is already working a bit better (likely from the DeOxit drying our of the wafers). Jason is not saying anything more then give it some time before rushing into what is a real pain at best, and potentially a disaster at worse with fixes to the ill fated fix. Given that these are tube rigs, I would just let it run 24 hours a day for a week or so (pull the finals on TXs). Hope that the DeOxit (or any other cleaner for that matter) dries out of the wafer from the heat of the rig enough that it will work without further potential need of mucking inside the rig with still more chemicals. Keep an eye on it for return symptoms and the need for some other form of fix. A Self healing (aka self drying out) fix is just as good as any other if it gets the job done. Most of us have other rigs besides our babies. In this case, let the baby try to dry out itself while you use your ricebox (or better yet your TR7 or other Drake rig). If it works (or works well enough) you are wiser for the experience, and a lot less stressed out from the repair of the ill fated repair. Re: [drakelist] Drake R7 Troubleshoot
Bryce, In the TR7 companion transceiver, when your symptom occurs, that is a sign that the contacts on the DR7 digital display board have oxidized and sometimes merely taking the screws out of top of the board, and moving it up and down some will "scrub" the pins clean enough to work for some time. It is better to use some good contact cleaner (but I stress GOOD, not readily available always, hi) to clean them thoroughly while the board is out. I am not sure how many of these you have been into, but there are several cables that connect to this board, and it is not a real easy chore to do! I use Caig DeOxit D5 as contact cleaner nowadays. Use SPARINGLY though, as one can damage as much as they fix. Caig products are now available in some Radio Shack stores, but I only found it as a set of DeOxit for contacts and ProGold for pots. Pricey, but good stuff! Hope this helps. 73, Don, WB5HAK

Re: [drakelist] Call Sign Survey
Mike, I am probably too old fashioned, but I still feel that the callsign should reflect the call area the ham is working from. It used to be easy to know where to point your beam just by listening to a call. Now it's nearly impossible! You used to be able to tell about how long a person had been a ham. Vanity callsigns have ruined both, so I guess in the final analysis, it is up to you now! 73, Don, WB5HAK
Re: [drakelist] TR-4 Relay question
Don and Diana Cunningham [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Chuck, Opinions are not really worth much, but mine is that you would spend your money better by having a good set of spare tubes to just substitute in like Garey suggests. Much cheaper than a decent tester, and will serve you much better. Many a tube that checked good in a tester turned out to be a bummer!! This is a sure-fire way to get into a lot of trouble. Consider the possibility that one or _TWO_ of the new tubes are either defective or sub-par in some way. Right away you have _TWO_ entirely different problems to troubleshoot. There's nothing wrong with having a set of tubes on hand however. Then if you have a problem, you can replace the most likely tube and see if there is any change. If you still have the problem, replace the original tube and try the next most likely. If you still have the problem, you then know that it's NOT a tube, and can proceed to troubleshoot until you find the real problem. When you have a working unit, check your spare tubes, again, one at a time, to verify that they work as expected. In this case don't worry about minor changes that might be corrected by alignment, etc., but just verify that the unit still works with the spare tube in place. Then store those tubes away and you have a definitive trouble-shooting tool. The carrier shift relay Drake used became unavailable near the end of production of the TR-4s. They made a small PC board that would accept another PC mount relay and had terminals to allow replacement of the original relay. 73, Garey - K4OAH Atlanta Drake C-Line Service Manual http://hr99.home.mindspring.com/R-4C_Servicez/ Chuck Wyatt wrote: Thanks Garey, I'm definitely going to try this, especially as Gary (Poland) indicates the original replacement relay is pretty difficult to find. Though I suppose I could substitute something from R/S perhaps with a 12 VDC coil. I'm supposing that this relay has nothing to do with carrier behavior (no carrier about 80% of the time when I throw the tune switch). As when I tap it down, the frequency on SSB receive shifts back to normal, but it doesn't seem to impact the tuning issue. Since I bought it only about a month ago, it probably makes sense to buy a whole new set of tubes for the thing just to discount gassey tubes as having an impact. -Chuck -- On Behalf of Chuck Wyatt [EMAIL PROTECTED] Submissions:drakelist@www.zerobeat.net Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: http://www.zerobeat.net Brought to you courtesy of TLCHost.net http://www.tlchost.net/ -- -- On Behalf of Don and Diana Cunningham [EMAIL PROTECTED] Submissions:drakelist@www.zerobeat.net Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: http://www.zerobeat.net Brought to you courtesy of TLCHost.net http://www.tlchost.net/ --

[drakelist] TR5
Don and Diana Cunningham [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterence to the drakelist gang -- Hi all, I am finally getting serious about re-working my TR5, s/n 01336, and find that the aluminum extrusion that makes up the front has some serious dings in what looks like the trim ring across the top when all is assembled. I hope I didn't add any of these in my move, and three year storage, but nonetheless, they are there. I may try to sand them out with some very fine grit paper, but when taking it off, it looked very much like the extrusion on the TR7! Comparing the two bears that out, with one additional hole drilled and a couple of the slots for controls and the readout have been milled out some more. Does anyone know if this was a special extrusion, or if Drake merely milled out those extra slots on a TR7 extrusion? Maybe I can locate a mint TR7 one and get someone to mill it out for me!! Don and Diana Cunningham [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterence to the drakelist gang -- Jim, I have owned several MN-2700's over the years. I found them to tune most of what I asked them to, and to be ruggedly constructed. I'm not saying they are as solid as the MN-2000, however. The only things I have found to watch are the lever switches that switch in extra capacitance are often arced over and they are definitely unobtanium by now, plus being a real pain to change!! I would ask for detailed closeup pictures of those switches before buying. Also the knob skirts are very important in being able to return to the same settings each time, and they over the years have cracked and slip on the shaft, so watch for cracks in the plastic (can only be seen from the inside, unfortunately). On the early version of the 2nd IF/Audio Board, R1187 doesn't exist. On the late version board Drake added R1187 (10K) in series with CR1119 but made a mistake in the copper trace design. In some (or most ?) cases, R1187 is short-circuited! Switching to CW mode still charges C1151 (22uF/16V) immediately through CR1119, thus giving a loud click in the audio circuit. I added a 10k resistor to my early version board and Rien - PA0TRT, modified the copper trace of his late version board. Both TR7's (S/N 3157 and 9345) are switching without any click to CW mode now. 73, Carel - PA0CMU. _ Ontvang Hotmail Messenger op je mobiele telefoon http://mobile.msn.com/?lc=nl-nl -- On Behalf of Carel, PA0CMU [EMAIL PROTECTED] Submissions:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: http://www.zerobeat.net Brought to you courtesy of TLCHost.net http://www.tlchost.net/ -- -- On Behalf of Don and Diana Cunningham [EMAIL PROTECTED] Submissions:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: http://www.zerobeat.net Brought to you courtesy of TLCHost.net http://www.tlchost.net/ --

I can hear and make some contacts on 15 but when compared to a general coverage receiver (not even a very good one) the s meter readings are much lower on the TR-4. What am I missing here? someone wrote that I should peak the band caps on the effected bands. I am not sure where they are can someone tell me where they are? and anything else that might be helpful to repair this problem? I really love this transceiver. Sterling, Hope someone on the list has some of the knobs you are looking for, but I looked for a couple of years for some for a nice MN-7 I had. Peitro, There is a bulb (#12, I think) that is used as a "fuse" in the receive line near the T/R relay on the bottom of the chassis. I am sure it will! 73's Rob From: Don and Diana Cunningham To: Rob , Subject: Re: [drakelist] TR7A -- 60 Hz Hum in Headphones Date: Fri, 18 Jul 2003 19:12:23 -0500 Rob, Drake put a resistor in series with the hot lead on the headphone. My old memory says it was a 100k, 1/4 watt, but think the exact remedy is listed on the Drakelist Home Page. It's really that simple! 73, Don, WB5HAK - Original Message - From: Rob To: Sent: Friday, July 18, 2003 5:42 PM Subject: [drakelist] TR7A -- 60 Hz Hum in Headphones I just acquired a TR7A. It works great. Listening to the speaker, the receiver sounds great and I have been getting great audio quality reports on my SSB transmissions. However, I do hear a pretty noticeable 60 Hz hum when I use my headphones. (I don't notice the hum in the speaker even when the volume is turned way down -- I only hear the hum when I use headphones). Is this normal for a TR7A? If not, where should I look to track down the problem? The power supply? A blocking cap in the audio section? I could always use an external 60 Hz hum audio filter but I would prefer to find the source of the problem. 73's Rob -- Submissions: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - subscribe drakelist in body Unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Brought to you courtesy of TLCHost.net http://www.tlchost.net/ -- -- Submissions: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - subscribe drakelist in body Unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Brought to you courtesy of TLCHost.net http://www.tlchost.net/ -- -- Submissions:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - subscribe drakelist in body Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Brought to you courtesy of TLCHost.net http://www.tlchost.net/ --
