I would say for impulse type noise, like my neighbor's electric fence, the
Drake blankers are superior. In fact, I am on the hunt for one for my TR7
so I can use it out here. Without the blanker (which I always sold with the
rigs I used to buy, fix, and sell, not so with most nowadays), this one I
have is a bother to listen to. Anyone got one to sell?? I have several of
the dummy boards, and should have kept one of the noise blankers, I know,
but I didn't need one in town and let them all go. Now that I have gotten
to move to the country, I find a need for one again.

I'm not understanding why 21.1 would not be the correct crystal for 30m???
In the Drake scheme, that would be 10.0 to 10.5 megs, and the dial would
read correctly. Am I missing something? 20.8 would be 9.7 to 10.2 and the

Losing a pass transistor wouldn't cause the problem you describe. Losing
the 723 regulator could cause this, since it would allow the full dc voltage
available to to through the pass transistors. I would sure substitute the
723 with a new one if you have one. Radio Shack used to carry them, but not

Re: [drakelist] Drake L7 PS Question

2006-07-28 Thread Don and Diana Cunningham

Randy,
I hope you get some MUCH more informed answers than
mine, but to answer your question quickly "NO"!! Do not use
anything other than the high voltage wire and connectors you have already on the
Drake. It is designed to handle the voltage, while smaller wire and an RCA
connector would not handle it. You may need to find some help if you are
not familiar with this type wire and connectors, but I'm sure your connector can
be repaired, or at worst, replaced. Wait till some of the more expert
Drakesters check in, with ideas (maybe even pictures of the procedure) but be
safe, and don't substitute anything for what you need.

Keith,
As Garey so eloquently said, this is only ONE man's opinion, but I will
agree with the R4B being the best of the receivers you mentioned. I like
the mellow sound, both on SSB and AM shortwave stations, and the built-in
passband tuning and filter widths is a definite plus for casual use. Yes,
the color coded crystals refer to the built-in crystals, and only effect
transceive mode, which is handy for casual SSB conversations with the T4XB.
Good luck with your vintage Drake! By the way, Garey was too nice to toot
his own horn, but the CD he produces for the 4 B line is fantastic!! Well
worth the money just for the time savings finding the components on boards.
Very nice pictures of EACH board, with labels. Hard to beat. No

various portions of the band and use that process to tell when I have it
the correct length.(it's too long) To save time, I would think I'd be able
to peak the RF TUNE and dip the plate, but not load the antenna. I'd have
to increase the gain control so I could get a full deflection on my SWR

You will likely get several opinions on this, but
my first reaction would be to take the seller up on his option to return the
unit for a refund. Parts are mostly "unobtainium" except from other
defective units. In the earlier days, when Drake still had parts, I would
give a different answer, but it is getting extremely rare to find what you need
to adequately repair these units unless it is simply connections, ceramic
standoffs, shaft couplings, etc that some of us might have in our junk
boxes. Switches arced (contacts blown off) are more often what I used to
find, and they were expensive WHEN we could get them, hi. Good luck,

Floyd,
This sounds like the famous dirty connections on the DR-7 board that most
of us have run into. Sometimes you only have to take the screw out of the
board, and move it up and down some to clean the contacts, but I usually
had to take the DR-7 out and put some DeOxit on the pins and in the socket
to clean the contacts enough to make this stop. Some have said they found
cold solder joints on that plug (actually soldered from the bottom of the
motherboard, as I remember, but I have not found that here. The other half
of the plug would solder from the DR-7 board itself. If that's not TOO
confusing, hope it helps your problem!

I don't think it is a matter that a miracle healing occurred, but rather
a comment to give the rig some time before you go forcing the band switch,
and or trying to correct the error with other procedures.

I was lucky years ago with self healing (drying of wafers) from spray
cleaners. Reports are that the rig in question is already working a bit
better (likely from the DeOxit drying our of the wafers). Jason is not
saying anything more then give it some time before rushing into what is a
real pain at best, and potentially a disaster at worse with fixes to the
ill fated fix.

Given that these are tube rigs, I would just let it run 24 hours a day for
a week or so (pull the finals on TXs). Hope that the DeOxit (or any other
cleaner for that matter) dries out of the wafer from the heat of the rig
enough that it will work without further potential need of mucking
inside the rig with still more chemicals. Keep an eye on it for return
symptoms and the need for some other form of fix.

A Self healing (aka self drying out) fix is just as good as any other if
it gets the job done. Most of us have other rigs besides our babies. In
this case, let the baby try to dry out itself while you use your ricebox
(or better yet your TR7 or other Drake rig). If it works (or works well
enough) you are wiser for the experience, and a lot less stressed out from
the repair of the ill fated repair. If it doesn't work, all you did was
loose a couple weeks.

One way would be to find one of the old serial port A/B switches and put
two 8 pin jacks in it, and rewire the switch in it to switch from those 8
pin jacks. That make sense to you?? In other words, the A/B switch
switched 25 wires from one socket to another, just like you want to do 8,
hi. At least the switch out of that would work I think in a metal box to
shield it. The Drake plug could be on a cable exiting from the box. There
are probably better ways, but I think that would work.

Re: [drakelist] Drake R7 Troubleshoot

2005-07-19 Thread Don and Diana Cunningham

Bryce,
In the TR7 companion transceiver, when your symptom
occurs, that is a sign that the contacts on the DR7 digital display board have
oxidized and sometimes merely taking the screws out of top of the board, and
moving it up and down some will "scrub" the pins clean enough to work for some
time. It is better to use some good contact cleaner (but I stress GOOD,
not readily available always, hi) to clean them thoroughly while the board is
out. I am not sure how many of these you have been into, but there are
several cables that connect to this board, and it is not a real easy chore to
do! I use Caig DeOxit D5 as contact cleaner nowadays. Use SPARINGLY
though, as one can damage as much as they fix. Caig products are now
available in some Radio Shack stores, but I only found it as a set of DeOxit for
contacts and ProGold for pots. Pricey, but good stuff! Hope this
helps.

Re: [drakelist] Call Sign Survey

2005-05-31 Thread Don and Diana Cunningham

Mike,
I am probably too old fashioned, but I still feel
that the callsign should reflect the call area the ham is working from. It
used to be easy to know where to point your beam just by listening to a
call. Now it's nearly impossible! You used to be able to tell about
how long a person had been a ham. Vanity callsigns have ruined both, so I
guess in the final analysis, it is up to you now!

Opinions are not really worth much, but mine is that you would spend your
money better by having a good set of spare tubes to just substitute in like
Garey suggests. Much cheaper than a decent tester, and will serve you much

Chuck -
I would NOT replace all tubes with new ones!!! This is a sure-fire way
to get into a lot of trouble. Consider the possibility that one or
_TWO_ of the new tubes are either defective or sub-par in some way.
Right away you have _TWO_ entirely different problems to troubleshoot.
There's nothing wrong with having a set of tubes on hand however. Then
if you have a problem, you can replace the most likely tube and see if
there is any change. If you still have the problem, replace the
original tube and try the next most likely. If you still have the
problem, you then know that it's NOT a tube, and can proceed to
troubleshoot until you find the real problem. When you have a
working unit, check your spare tubes, again, one at a time, to verify
that they work as expected. In this case don't worry about minor
changes that might be corrected by alignment, etc., but just verify that
the unit still works with the spare tube in place. Then store those
tubes away and you have a definitive trouble-shooting tool.
The carrier shift relay Drake used became unavailable near the end of
production of the TR-4s. They made a small PC board that would accept
another PC mount relay and had terminals to allow replacement of the
original relay.

Thanks Garey, I'm definitely going to try this, especially as Gary
(Poland) indicates the original replacement relay is pretty difficult
to find. Though I suppose I could substitute something from R/S
perhaps
with a 12 VDC coil. I'm supposing that this relay has nothing to do
with carrier behavior (no carrier about 80% of the time when I throw
the tune switch). As when I tap it down, the frequency on SSB receive
shifts back to normal, but it doesn't seem to impact the tuning issue.
Since I bought it only about a month ago, it probably makes sense to
buy a whole new set of tubes for the thing just to discount gassey
tubes as having an impact.

Hi all,
I am finally getting serious about re-working my TR5, s/n 01336, and find
that the aluminum extrusion that makes up the front has some serious dings
in what looks like the trim ring across the top when all is assembled. I
hope I didn't add any of these in my move, and three year storage, but
nonetheless, they are there. I may try to sand them out with some very
fine grit paper, but when taking it off, it looked very much like the
extrusion on the TR7! Comparing the two bears that out, with one additional
hole drilled and a couple of the slots for controls and the readout have
been milled out some more. Does anyone know if this was a special
extrusion, or if Drake merely milled out those extra slots on a TR7
extrusion? Maybe I can locate a mint TR7 one and get someone to mill it
out for me!! Tks for any help anyone can provide. Mike, weigh in if you
remember please. Your work may have been all design, but maybe you remember
this one mechanical part, hi.

I have owned several MN-2700's over the years. I found them to tune most of
what I asked them to, and to be ruggedly constructed. I'm not saying they
are as solid as the MN-2000, however. The only things I have found to watch
are the lever switches that switch in extra capacitance are often arced over
and they are definitely unobtanium by now, plus being a real pain to
change!! I would ask for detailed closeup pictures of those switches before
buying. Also the knob skirts are very important in being able to return
to the same settings each time, and they over the years have cracked and
slip on the shaft, so watch for cracks in the plastic (can only be seen from
the inside, unfortunately). Other than those things, a very fine tuner!

stated in the TR4 manual??

Hi all,
The problem of the mode switch thump has been found.
On the early version of the 2nd IF/Audio Board, R1187 doesn't exist. On
the late version board Drake added R1187 (10K) in series with CR1119 but
made a mistake in the copper trace design. In some (or most ?) cases,
R1187 is short-circuited! Switching to CW mode still charges C1151
(22uF/16V) immediately through CR1119, thus giving a loud click in the
audio circuit.

I added a 10k resistor to my early version board and Rien - PA0TRT,
modified the copper trace of his late version board. Both TR7's (S/N 3157
and 9345) are switching without any click to CW mode now.

73, Carel - PA0CMU.

Bill,
Get a tube (for your calking gun, if you prefer) of silicone sealer at your
local builder's supply store. It will seal this connection, and can be cut
away later if needed. I would tape over the metal connections at the
antenna itself first, as the vinegar in the silicone can corrode those
connections. The silicone will fill the void between the braid of the coax
and its outer jacket far better than anything else I have tried.

Thanks to all who responded to my question about Krylon. I chose the
coax
seal for that problem.

I have another situation this time it's with the Hustler 6-BTV Vertical I
just purchased and am assembling. The connection to this antenna is by
opening the end of the coax, about 2 inches, and making two leads, one
with
the braid and one with the center lead. They are then soldered to two
lugs(supplied) and then srewed to the bottom of the vertical. It seems the
only way I can weather protect this connection is with the Acrylic Plastic
spray someone suggested. Any other thoughts?

Thanks for any help,

Dan,
You are taking me back many years, and around here somewhere I have an
article by a gentleman named Sartori that made some of the solid state
replacements for the 4 line tubes. I think his articles were in Ham Radio
or CQ mag though, not QST. You might do a search of those data bases, as he
published the FET's he used, and how he did it. Hope that helps, or jogs
the memories of some of the other list members as to where to find his
article. I will look, but it may take me a while to dig through all the

Before posting, I searched through the Drakelist databases for any mention
of solid state tube replacements and found nothing. In the April 1977
issue of QST, they talk about Solid Tubes and making replacement tubes
for some of the Drake 4 line. They talk about using readily available 7
and 9 pin miniature plugs to build the replacement tubes on. Back then
I'm sure they were readily available, but I can't find them anywhere
today. Does anyone know where I can buy the 7 and 9 pin plugs, or better
yet where I can buy already made solid state tube replacements for 12BY7A,
12AX7A, 12BA6, 6BA6, 6AU6 and 6EV7?

Many thanks for your comments.

Yes, you are correct, David. That heat sink

it is pulling air out, not blowing it back in though. If someone has

There is a #12 lamp, used as a fuse, in series with the antenna lead to the
antenna changeover relay. It is located in different spots in different
serial numbered TR4's, but some are on the bottom of the chassis, near the
antenna connector. Others had it in the final compartment (watch for the
high voltage if you have to go in there, hi). The pins on these bulbs can
corrode (or the bulb be open) and you will get the symptoms you describe.
Have you cleaned the pins on this #12, and better yet, checked it for
continuity?? It will make receive VERY low, hi.

The switch is in the tranceive position and working correctly.

Let me ask the obvious, and the only reason I do is because it's caught be
several times. What about the tranceiver/mute switch on the left rear
corner? Is it in Transceive position? If you have it locked on. take the
lock and move it back and forth a couple of times.

Thank you for all the advice. I have tried cleaning all of the switches
including the band switch along with the tube sockets and peaking the
crystal oscillators 40,15 and 10 meter bands all are running between -.6
and - .7 vdc. I changed the 6ea8 tubes in the front end and the receive
on 15 and 10 seems somewhat better but still not up to snuff. I can hear
the crystal calibrator but it is not giving me much on the s meter. I
can hear and make some contacts on 15 but when compared to a general
coverage receiver (not even a very good one) the s meter readings are
much lower on the TR-4.
What am I missing here? someone wrote that I should peak the band caps on
the effected bands. I am not sure where they are can someone tell me
where they are? and anything else that might be helpful to repair this
problem?
I really love this transceiver. I find that whenever I can hear a signal
with it I can usually work them. I always get great signal reports even
without using my linear something I can't get with my Icom.

Thank you,
Matt

Check the serial numbers of both rigs. If they don't end in the same

Drake matched the crystals somewhat and put the letters there to tell which
color crystal is in the rig. However, over the years, these have been
changed, but the color dot is usually seen on the crystal. Hope that helps!

You would be glad to have a part from a parted out radio. Or would you

Jim,
My opinion, and not worth much, is that most hams nowadays won't fool with
RTTY or CW, which pretty much makes these units obsolete to them. I have a
nice Theta 9000 myself and do run a LOT of RTTY, but prefer some of the
dedicated terminal units as they copy weak signals a bit better. I have
hooked mine up, and it copies quite well. Hook yours up and join us on 20
meter RTTY!!

I've been wondering why there is so little interest in the various
Drake/Tono terminal units. These things cost a kings ransom new, worked
fairly well and there can't have been too many of them made but you can
barely give one away any more. Are Drake fans all purists that don't
believe in any aids to run cw or what? I bought one in mint condition
several years ago and still have it stored in its original packing
thinking
it was too pretty to use but it looks like I might as well dig it out and
 put it to use.
 Any comments?

TR-7 omplete
station

Hi, guys,

A few members of our club
recently volunteered to spend a weekend cleaning up the club radio
room. It had become an absolute junk pile under several previous
administrations . . .

One of the things that emerged
as we cleaned and sorted was a complete TR-7 station - it has matching
everything. It is one of many surplus rigs donated over the years by
the estates of SKs.

My task is to try to figure out
what the TR-7 station is worth. Now, I realize that a lot depends on
the equipment itself. While it is all very good cosmetically, I have
not had the opportunity yet to determine much more - other than the tuner is
a champ.

Can anyone point me in a good
direction?

Re: [drakelist] Two MN-2700 questions

2004-03-30 Thread Don and Diana Cunningham

Sterling,
Hope someone on the list has some of the knobs you are looking for, but I
looked for a couple of years for some for a nice MN-7 I had. I'd suggest
epoxying the ones you have if they aren't totally broken. The capacitors on
my MN-2700 are smooth as silk. I have to take the cover off mine this week
to install some new knob skirts on the main knobs, so I'll see if any
adjustments are clear in mine, but I'd think you have a bind of some sort,
or they need lubrication.

I've got an MN-2700 that I've been using daily for a while. I've got
 two questions about it:

 - I need two of the plastic knobs that go on the levers on the bottom
used to switch in additional capacitance. the two on my MN-2700 are
cracked. Anyone know where to get a couple?
 - both the reactance and restive variable capacitors are stiff - they
require more than a fingertip to move them. Normal or do they need
 lubrication?

 Hi Drakesters,

I have an extra cable stub (about 3 long) with an RCA jack on the end
that originates out of the large Cinch Jones connector (female) on the
back
of my T-4XC. It's unlabeled and I see no picture or reference to it in my
manual. What is it for? Perhaps it's a mod by a previous owner, but if so
they certainly got a perfect match on connector and cable, looks quite
 original.

Re: [drakelist] tr4c issue

Peitro,
There is a bulb (#12, I think) that is used as a
"fuse" in the receive line near the T/R relay on the bottom of the
chassis. This will sometimes blow, or the pins on it will become corroded
and cause the low sensitivity you describe. Check it for corrosion and
continuity and think you might just find your problem.

However, I do hear a pretty noticeable 60 Hz hum when I use my

(I don't notice the hum in the speaker even when the volume is turned

Is this normal for a TR7A? If not, where should I look to track down
the

I could always use an external 60 Hz hum audio filter but I would
