[Elecraft] K2 problem: C44 at the limit
So K2 #4355 took less than a week to complete. (I cheated. 20 years ago I won the VICA Industrial Electronics national competition, the run-off, and they sent me to Europe to compete for the US.) It's not the prettiest, but it seems to work. So the only oddity is that C44 is at one of the limits, or so it seems. The slot is vertical, meaning the C is either maximum or minimum. L12, L13, and C46 didn't seem to affect it. So, anyone have any suggestions? Ignore it, parallel another cap for testing, etc? A friend has challenged me to make at least one contact on it before I start installing the options. I better start working on my antennas. -- Hisashi T Fujinaka - [EMAIL PROTECTED] BSEE(6/86) + BSChem(3/95) + BAEnglish(8/95) + MSCS(8/03) + $2.50 = latte ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Antenna?
Hi All, I'm new to this list and Elecraft too - I've recently completed building a loaded KX1 #731. After building and aligning the KX1 with zero problems, I connected it to both my 130+ ft slinky dipole strung-up in the attic of our single-level home (with RG8X) and also my Cushcraft MA5V vertical (10-12-15-17-20) up around 33 feet at the base (also with RG8X). I was pleasantly surprised to hear the receiver come alive with signals on all three bands. The built-in antenna tuner reports: Slinky Dipole CliffDweller II 40m: 7055 - 2.1 Watts out, SWR 1.0 30m: 10107 - 1.8 Watts out, SWR 5.2 (relay chatter) 20m: 14065 - 3.0 Watts out, SWR 1.2 Cushcraft MA5V Mini Vertical 40m: 7055 - 2.1 Watts out, SWR 1.1 30m: 10107 - 4.3 Watts out, SWR 5.6 (relay chatter) (power out reading suspect) 20m: 14065 - 2.1 Watts out, SWR 1.0 Dummy Load (Oil-filled Can-tenna) 40m: 7055 - 2.9 Watts out, SWR 1.0 30m: 10107 - 2.3 Watts out, SWR 1.0 20m: 14065 - 2.3 Watts out, SWR 1.0 (all using Lithium Batteries) Any thoughts regarding why the tuner has such a problem on 30m? Wow, what a great little rig! This is going to be fun. Elecraft is certainly a class act. 72 73 Doug N7BNT ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Re: Transverters
If you have the internal antenna tuner installed in your K2, here is a different approach to hook up a transverter: Use ANT 2 for the Transverters IN/OUT and set the maximum power to the required level in the menu. If your transverter has split connections for Input/Output, you need the 160m/RX-Ant option. In this case, use ANT 2 to drive the transverter and RX-Ant for the RX-path of your transverter. This setup worked here for 2 years now with a 50 Mhz Ten-Tec Transverter and 2 SSB-Electronic-Transverters for 2m 70cm . -- Best regards, Martin K2 #2706mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Re: ham gear and airports
I recently took a trip and did not take my KX1 because I was concerned about potential problems at the airports. I would like to hear about the experiences of others who have traveled by plane with ham equipment. ... Hoping that it won't be ''confiscated'' in some european airport I will pass trough. Over the years, before and after 911 I've travelled with lots and lots of equipment (that included 2 pieces w/ 100 Lbs each, fully packed with electronics, and clothes only as padding to the equipment, on a route Amsterdam, USA, Japan, and vice versa..) I never had a problem, but follow these basic rules which are really common sense: - sharp objects should be checked in (so should things which can be construed as such). Image you want to cut something, stab something or club something, using your amateur radio gear. If you can find a way to do that, chances are that a security guy thinks the same, in that case check it in!) - gear with battaries should preferrably be in the hand luggage, and secured against accidental power-on (so _disconnect_ and _isolate_) that battary. In general, think what a fire caused by short circuit can cause and isolate and pack properly. - Note that some people think that lead-acid cells are not allowed (K2_BAT!) even though some types are approved. As I can see the problem with acid gell loose in your luggage, I always removed those. - I always announce to the security guys that this is a lot of electronics and you probably want to inspect this. They seldom do. By doing this, you set their expectation level, and that's good because you really don't want to surprize security folk. If they do inspect, just cooperate and explain. - Think what a security guard might see in something, and pack accordingly. (if it can be used for stabbing, cutting, clubbing, check it!) In general, I have found USA airports the most paranoid and underterministic, while most European airports are thorough but have clear policies and can be reasoned with. Nobody is interested in confiscating your equipment as it's not worth anything: it doesn't look like a camcorder (and don't pack it in a camcorder bag!). People are interested in you not being able to pull stupid stunts mid-air, or have your equipment pull a stupid stunt on you by inadvertently switching on, catching fire or anything. Also, checking stuff in in foreign airports is not a big deal. I've lost my luggage more often on flights to the USA, than flights to developing countries in Africa. (but USA airports, understandably, have better procedures to file claims etc, so label your stuff over and over.) Can we go back to the scheduled discussions on Hakko tools? 73, Geert Jan PE1HZG ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Re: Transverters
Hi According to Elecraft this is NOT a good way to connect the transverters. The isolation in the KAT2 is not good enough and you will most likely be transmitting a small amount of 10 meter RF into your HF antenna system when using the transverter unless you disconnect the HF antenna. I tried this hook up at first and abandoned it after the information came out from Elecraft to not use it. The low level IF I/O on the KX60M is a much better way to connect the transverters. Re: [Elecraft] Transverters
Hi Make sure you are using the BNC on the right (J3) when looking at the back for the TX IF in and the one on the left (J2) for the RX IF out. The silk screen is backwards on some of the rear panels and there may be a little label over the original silk screen with the correct information on it. I have two early XVxxx and the silkscreen was backwards on both of them. You can order the correct label from Elecraft. Obviously the transverter will not work if the IF cables are reversed. This had me going in circles on one I built recently. When using the transverter with a single TX/RX cable J2 and J3 are connected together so it does not matter which one you use. But when using separate TX and RX cables the paths are split and J2 must be used for the RX and J3 for the TX. The BNC tees will need to mount at a 45 degree angle and you will need to make up several short 3-6 inch coax jumpers to use to connect the transverter stack. You will also need to make a pair of BNC to RCA cables 2-3 feet to connect the transverter stack to the K2/XV60M Don Brown KD5NDB - Original Message - From: Paulmailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.netmailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, July 06, 2004 9:19 PM Subject: [Elecraft] Transverters Reflector Members and specifically: Simon Lewis Don Brown Eric Swartz Thank you for the help on the transverters. Yesterday, using the AB switch, the incoming signal volume worked fine and now there is hardly and audible signal and no reading or just barely an S1 bar on incoming signals. So maybe I jumpered something wrong or I used the wrong connection diagram or maybe I did not properly tune the 60 meter upgrade module when I put it in. Can any of you offer some insight into where I might start my troubleshooting on this FYI : I am using the diagram on page 66 of the transverter manual and I used the jumper setting for -20 dBm(.01) to 0 dBm(1 mW) which is listed as the following connections: JP1: 1-2 JP2: 2-3 JP3: 1-2 JP4: 1-2 JP5: 2-3 JP6 2-3 This XV144 is deaf as can be now.. and it was not with the High RF output and an AB switch. So I have missed something somewhere! XV 50 is low audio too. By the way - How do you get those BNC T-connectors to fit back there. I had to use them in the vertical positon and then set the transverters on a book so they did not bend the wires coming out of the bottom of the T-connector when hooked up to the transverters. RE: [Elecraft] Re: KX1 and airport security
He got REALLY excited and began pointing at it, yelling, WHUT ISS DAT?, over and over as he backed away from the car. My 14 year-old son got out of the car to see what he was upset over and when he tried to pick it up and show the guard it was only a radio, the guard got even MORE excited, screaming NO!!! LEAVE IT 'LONE!!!. About 5 minutes later, after finally getting him calmed down, he finally, and hurriedly, motioned us on through the checkpoint. Thank goodness he didn't have a firearm with him. He probably would have drawn it from it's holster. Rick, this is such an amazing and incredible story. I think maybe the guard has seen too many James Bond films, no? But this thread also points out that many, many people have stories like this. I won't even go into the time that I took my little QRP rig through LAX (years before 9/11), was held up going through X-ray, had my briefcase and shaving kit dumped out on the table, with a guard hunched over staring at my rig for several minutes and then finally shrugging pathetically and saying, Voices come out of this thing? Nor will I recount, as I sat waiting at the gate afterward still burning over the incident that spilled my toothpaste-pills-allligator clips all over the floor, the over three minutes that it took someone to show up when a security door leading to the tarmac was opened and left opened as the ear-splitting alarm rang, without ceasing, for all of those three or four minutes. Plenty of time for someone to run out to the aircraft and plant a bomb and run back. They sure took their time responding to that. But a QRP rig?? Now THAT'S dangerous enough to detain someone over!! For everyone, I think the take-away is that the better trained the security screeners, the less likely you will be to have problems. I've got some really funny, off-topic, pre-9/11 stories involving ignorant screeners, x-ray dosimetry badges, and ionization chambers to calibrate x-ray generators. Since TSA took over, I've not had ANY problems getting anything through the checkpoints that wasn't on the banned list. I had to turn my HT on once to let them hear the squelch noise and let them rummage through a backpack to look at a small Maglight, but that's been the total of the insults I've had since that awful day. Some things should go without saying, but some people need it said anyway. The screeners are only trying to do a job they feel is very important. Treat them nicely and with respect. If you're taking a bunch of electronics, plan ahead and take out ANYTHING that looks like it might be on the banned items list. Show up a little earlier so the screeners can rummage through your stuff if the image on the baggage scanner makes something look worrisome. Should they ask any questions, answer them nicely, offer to explain anything they don't understand, and thank them for their time when they clear you and all your stuff. If, like one bozo I saw, you loose your cool when a screener takes away your pen-knife and you yell, Give that back! It's ONLY a pen-knife! It's NOT like it's a BOMB, or anything!!! expect to be ushered to a small, windowless room by six people with hands on their weapons, where you will wait until well AFTER your flight leaves the ground before you are released. I think if you use common sense, you can take any of your radio equipment onboard with you without much hassle. Rick Hampton, WD8KEL [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: He got REALLY excited and began pointing at it, yelling, WHUT ISS DAT?, over and over as he backed away from the car. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Frequency Calibration
Speaking of zero beating, why not get an AM receiver tuned to WWV and zero beat the tone from the AM receiver to the SSB receiver? That way you can get within fractions of 1 Hz and it's a lot easier than watching a computer screen. I found that I couldn't get the K2 spot on because of the calibration procedure. I got it darn close, though. RE: [Elecraft] Queries posted from sites that need the answersauthenticated
I agree Stuart. Any time I try to reply to an e-mail and run into one of those systems, I just trash it and forget it. But I never run into that on this reflector. As a rule I post ONLY to the Elecraft list. After all, in 3 or so years around the Elecraft reflector I've seen almost no questions unique to one person, so replying direct means that a lot of readers are left hanging without an answer unless they each ask again and again and again... And seeing if a question has been answered helps avoid tons of duplicates. Sometimes when I've asked a question I've gotten more the 20 or 30 answers spread over a week, all saying the same thing. Once in a long while someone will mention that they can't access the list easily and requests a direct answer. In that case, and only then, I reply BOTH to the list and to the person. Re: [Elecraft] Application Note: Calibrating the K2's 4 MHz MasterOscillator
Folks, This IS the N6KR method that I have become so fond of (add an 'l' to the link below). Wayne was the originator of this method and Tom has done a good job of documenting it. I will still stick with my favored method of observing zero beat (looking at the tone frequencies with Spectrogram) because it takes my ears and eyes out of the picture and allows me to get within 3 Hz of zero beat. I realize that Wayne is trying to achieve a 'no added equipment required' flavor to it, but for me, the added equipment makes it easier and more certain - YMMV. I will be updating my webpage (www.qsl.net/w3fpr) with the link to the document soon. 73, Don W3FPR - Original Message - Here's a technique that allows C22 (K2 Master Oscillator Calibration Capacitor) on the K2 Control Board to be set to precisely to the correct position, with no guesswork, and no external test equipment. [Elecraft] W3FPR's Fixed AF Output Kit Mounting
I just received Don's Fixed AF kit and would like to commend him for his work in getting it designed and put together in kit form. It performs as expected and will be very useful. In trying to mount the completed board in my K2-100, I encountered a problem that others might run into, depending on the serial number and/or shield mod that is installed. If you have the mod (or newer K2) that includes a shield for the speaker, the recommended mounting position on the left side panel will probably not work due to the decreased clearance. I tried everywhere along the side panel in all rotations, but could not find a spot that gave enough clearance. The speaker shield is just a bit too big. It also projects down far enough to preclude mounting horizontally on the RF board in that general area. I would up mounting it on top of U1, the I/O controller, in a horizontal position by exposing only a small section of the adhesive backing strip. Don't know if that will create any problems, but seems to be OK so far. 73, Mike - W0AG ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. SWR Analyzer is MFJ-259B 3. MA5V Vertical is tuned for digital modes, so SWR measurements of 1.0 and 1.1 are expected. Observations: 1. KX1's antenna tuner does a fantastic job matching either antenna on 40 meters. 2. KX1's antenna tuner does a dismal job matching either antenna on 30 meters. 3. KX1's antenna tuner does a fantastic job matching the slinky dipole on 20 meters. (vertical is already resonant on 20m) I guess it's just interesting to me that the internal tuner does such a GREAT job matching the 135' slinky dipole on both 20 and 40 meters, but falls apart on 30meters. It's also interesting to me that the internal tuner NICELY matches the MA5V on 40 meters (it's only a 10-20m vertical with a SWR of 7.6 on the antenna analyzer at 7055khz). I appreciate the suggestions I have received so far and will check them out - first by adjusting the coax length by adding some to see if the 30 meter situation improves (without negatively affecting 20/40 meters). Any other observations or suggestions are welcome! 72's, Doug N7BNT ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr.
