[Elecraft] kat2 question

2011-01-09 Thread Dan Grizzard
Hello all,
I have completed the assembly of my kat2 and am at the testing phase. The
question is: I hear relay clicking when going thru the display settings for
L0-L8, C0-C8, N1 N2, but NOT for
CALn,CALP, CALS, AUTO, ALT and POUT. Is this normal?
Thanks in advance

[Elecraft] KAT2 question abt voltage at U4, pin7

2009-02-03 Thread KC9GBX
After a recent calamity while attempting PSK31, where I introduced 13.5v
into microphone jack pin 6 (a 5v line), repairs have been made, and I have made

contacts in both cw and ssb modes.

However, I seem to be getting more HI CURRENT warnings on bands and at power
levels where previously, I did not.

I re-initialized the KAT2, and, as I cycle through L0-L8 and C0-C8, all
relays provide a nice click.

I performed the dc voltage checks at the bottom of KAT2 manual, page 22.
Everything was fine, except for U4, pin 7 where I got a reading of 4.74v
instead of the 0v or nearly 0v that the manual implies I should see. Could
this be
the cause of the HI CURRENT warnings?

Thanks for your consideration.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT2 question abt voltage at U4, pin7

2009-02-03 Thread Don Wilhelm
Check the actual power with an external wattmeter - set the power
control to 5 watts and transmit, then tell us if the actual power is
near 5 watts or near the maximum power (12 watts or over).

It is possible that U4 is faulty. Pin 7 is not used - there are 2 op
amps in the LM358 package, so if the one having its output at pin 1 is
OK, power will be controlled and it does not matter what pin 7 does
because it is connected to nothing. The power output check above will
tell if the output at U4 pin 1 is working.

2008-02-15 Thread Ingo Meyer (DK3RED)

Hello Geoff,

I have a quick question, as I have been using an MFJ tuner to a balanced
feedline on a doublet, and have not built a balun for the K2/KAT2 yet.
Is there a bypass mode for the KAT2 such that I can use an external
tuner? ATU AUTO, of course, causes the KAT2 to go thru a tune cycle
when pressing the TUNE button on the K2.

Yes, its possible. If you use the KAT2 as SWR/wattmeter only, the matching network
is disabled/bypassed. Switch your KAT2 via the menu to CALS (for SWR display) or
CALP (for power meter).

Yes, Geoff, you will have met that while building your K2. If you want
to bypass the ATU, in the menu set ATU Pout.

I got caught out by this and had to unsolder one end later. The
manual needs to explicitly state that R6 is not installed with the
other resistors.

If you can't find the spot in the manual, download the .pdf version and
an Adobe Reader search for R6 will find it for you.

I guess most of us installed it when the manual told us to, not when we
fancied doing it. In that context the manual does explicitly state when
to install it.

RE: [Elecraft] KAT2 Question....is mine working?

2006-11-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
Chuck,

Did you ever hear the relays click once? Like the first time you attempted
a TUNE with that antenna.

The KAT2 remembers the tuning settings for each band (on each of ANT1 and
ANT2), and when that band is selected there are some clicks from the KAT2
when the bandchange is made along with the bandswitching relay clicks from
the K2, so it is hard to tell them apart.

If the SWR is already at 1, then further presses of TUNE will only result in
an occasional relay click if any at all - becuase it is already tuned.

You may have no problem at all - just the nice operation of the stored
settings for the KAT2.

If the wattmeter in your KAT2 is properly set for reflected power, all is
working OK.

 -Original Message-

I just finished my KAT2, everything cal'd and aligned according to the
manual using my DL1 dummy load.

When I hook the tuner up to my (10 - 40M) attic dipole and use the tune,
I am expecting to hear some relay sounds, but nothing? Within a few
second the tuner turns off and give me a (allways) SWR of 1.0 : 1 across
 all bands.

The same is true, even 80M.

I really expected to hear some kind of clicking from the relays using
80M, given what it is feeding into.

RE: [Elecraft] KAT2 Question....is mine working?

2006-11-04 Thread Chuck
No, that is why I posted.

Perhaps I should be pleased, but instead I am bothered.

Last night in testing/playing, have gone to the low and high end of
every band and tuned. Always with the same result. I hear the start/stop
beep (but no relay clatter), then 1.0 -1 as the setting.

I have changed the display mode to SWR and swept portions of the band
in TUNE (at 1 watt) with the same result 1.0 - 1 everywhere?

One other else thing I noticed (last night), Right now Ant 2 is not
connected, my plan is to have that connected to the DL1, but when I was
working last night it was not. I was listening to 40M, the band seemed
good and was on a pretty stong signal. Then while playing with the
controls, I decided to switch over to Ant 2, expecting to hear silence
(the K2 is quiet), to my surprise I heard the strong signal breaking in,
then being squelched.

I thought the isolation between Ant 1 and Ant 2 should have been high
enough to avoid this.

Then 1 went up in freq. abit around 7060 kHz and found that even noise
would break through occasionally, this again surprised me, I could
perhaps understand a strong signal, but just noise...?

So my concern is that on transmit I am getting some spill-over/leakage
into the other Antenna channel.

Thanks, again.

I was able to get C55 down to 004 and R1 and R2 are aligned with what
power the DL1 chart reads for voltage vs. output.

Alex,

Use your DVM to measure the voltage at the wiper of the reflected
potentiometer - adjust for a minimum. If the minimum is high, then check
your work - the diode orientation, the winding of the bifilar transformer,
and other components in the circuit (look at the schematic to identify the
related components).

[Elecraft] KAT2 question

2005-04-12 Thread David A.Belsley
Good people: After all these years I have decided that I may add the
KAT2 to my K2 lid. Although I have the KPA100, I use the K2 barefoot
when travelling and feel the KAT2 would be of use. A quick perusal of
the KAT2 manual suggests that, once the modifications to the K2 have
been made for the KPA100, no further mods to the K2 boards are needed
for the KAT2. I just thought, however, I would double check with those
who know to verify this. Am I correct?

David,

Good choice - but next you will be needing an EC2 enclosure to mount the
KPA100 so you can have a 'pick up and go' station.

The changes you have already made for the KPA100 will work fine with the
KAT2. Actually, fewer changes need to be made on the base K2 to install the
KAT2 (I am speaking of the electrical changes rather than the insallation of
the AUX RF jack on the RF Board.
