FLUXLIST: It is Thomas Malthus Top Ten

2006-07-27 Thread Allan Revich

Thomas Malthus Top Ten: It Is

  It is surely lost time
  It is an obvious truth
  It is next to impossible
It is much to be lamented
It is left to act with freedom
  It is an acknowledged truth
  It is impossible to suppose
It is my present purpose to state
It is said that early marriages very generally
  prevail
It is said that the passion between the sexes is less
  ardent

FLUXLIST: LiveArtWork DVD

2006-07-19 Thread Allan Revich

I came across this
via an unrelated list that I subscribe to and thought it would be interesting to
the Fluxperformers out there.

Allan

http://liveartwork.com/dvd/
"Liveartwork DVD is collection of
video documentation of performance art and live art. The intention is to publish
a new DVD every two or three months featuring a new collection of edited video
clips of recent performance art work.liveartwork DVD is an
independant project and currently receives no funding. However, I am attempting
to distribute the DVD as cheaply as possible (issue prices cover the basic
production and mailing costs). The idea behind the DVD is to make
performance art more accessible and to introduce the audience to new artists
through video documentation of their work."

RE: FLUXLIST: FW: New liveartwork DVD just out.

OK.

Now I feel really silly!

That's what happens when I try to read my e-mail too quickly. I suppose that
the Fluxlist is actually quite closely related to the Fluxlist after all.
Where's the unsend button when you need it?

I have moved on; I have grown up. I am now involved with J*** in a washing

RE: FLUXLIST: Re: On the disagreement

2006-07-17 Thread Allan Revich
There really is no special reason that one should feel that they
need/want/deserve/feel in-titled to the fluxus label on their work or
selves. But there is also no special reason that should prevent one using
the label either. Like all labels, the Fluxus label can potentially supply
information and disinformation simultaneously.

Labels are like avatars or shortcuts. If someone says that they produce
Fluxus work, or Fluxist work, or Fluxus inspired work you have a good
starting point for understanding their work. If a person describes herself
as a Fluxus artist one will (assuming one knows what Fluxus is/was) have a
good idea about the kind of art that person produces - on the other hand the
label in this case might also lead to confusion as the Fluxus Artist may
or may not have been associated with Historical Fluxus.

For example, Yoko Ono is a Fluxus artist who no longer (to my knowledge)
creates Fluxus art, whereas Allen Bukoff may also be a Fluxus artist, but he
became associated with Fluxus post-Maciunas. Then there is the large group
of us who create Fluxus-inspired art which can be described as being Fluxus,
Fluxus-like, Fluxus or womething else. I don't think that it is inaccurate
for any of these artists/writers/performers to describe themselves as Fluxus
artists.

I think that the description of Fluxus as an attitude remains most useful.
It allows for the historical entity of Fluxus that existed until 1978 -
while also allowing for the living Fluxus being created from the late 1950s
until (and beyond) the present day. Fluxus is (and was) always in flux,
changing and evolving, and like Intermedia, it exists in more than one
dimension simultaneously. There is the historical dimension, the attitudinal
dimension, and a taxonomic (what kind of object) dimension to Fluxus - what
Fluxus is depends on the dimension being described.

It baffles me.. why one would feel that they need/want/deserve/feel
in-titled to the fluxus label on their work or selves.
I wouldn't consider the things that I make and do to be Fluxus, rather I
might note that my inspiration and theory is sometimes derived from fluxus
or more accurately parts of fluxus, Just as some folks associated with
Fluxus were inspired by, shared and developed theories that stemmed from
DADA and earlier Avant Gardes or the idea that Cage transformed Duchamp's
ideas of the ready made and distinction into his ideas on music and
composition (4'33)

Why do we need to use Fluxus as a label?
I taught a section on Fluxus in a 3d design/intro to sculpture class a few
years ago. I had my students research Fluxus starting with Dick Higgins 'A
child's history of Fluxus' all the way up to the 'Performance Workbook'.
They were then asked to develop their own Fluxus scores and perform them the
next class. The results were wonderful and I was really amazed at how much
they understood the material and made it their own, though I wouldn't
consider my students to be Fluxus artists. They were inspired by Fluxus and
what they did was create works derivative of the ideas and formats they
found in Fluxus.
Even though we may make works that stem from the ideas in fluxus, We can't
just call ourselves Fluxus artists. So where is the solution?
Are we Fluxus or are we not? Who is Fluxus?
How do we distinguish between the fluxus of today and the fluxus of
yesterday?
Owen has a very nice way of doing this, he describes what he does as not
fluxus but 'fluxist'.
For me Fluxus is an idea that seems to permeate the lives of those who
discover and continue to research it and it continues to spread and mutate
into many forms and ways of doing things.

RE: FLUXLIST: by the way-I disagree with Owen

2006-07-15 Thread Allan Revich

My 2 Cents Worth:
I'm not certain thatMadawgcompletely disagrees
with Owen Smith - even though she says she does. He does not put forward a
definitive "take it or leave it" view on the matter in either his recent
communications or in his book. His book title, Fluxus: The History of
an Attitude seems to sum it up quite nicely. Fluxus was an attitude, and as
such there was (and is) considerable latitude within that attitude. The history
of that attitude is what Fluxus was - and the living
continuation of that attitude is what Fluxus is - and is what
Fluxus will continue to be.I don't think that there has to be only
one accepted definition of Fluxus, nor is it necessary for Fluxus
definitions to exist on an "either/or" basis. Even during the Fluxus formative
years there were schisms and disagreements over what Fluxus was or wasn't, over
what works were Fluxus and what works were not, and over which artists
wereFluxus and which artists weren't.
Like Madawg I agree that one does not
need to be "anointed or appointed" to be Fluxus, however I also think that one
must have a pretty goodunderstanding of what Fluxus was, and of what
Fluxus is, before one can call oneself Fluxus with any claim to legitimacy. I.E.
People who believe that Fluxus no longer exists would probably not accept
anybody working today as a "Fluxus Artist". People who believe
that Fluxus art continues to be made today would likely accept
anyonecreating workwith a Fluxus attitude and working in Fluxus
media as a"Fluxus Artist". But if somebody who didn't have any understanding of
Fluxus at all was to claim thathe was aFluxus Artist, based only on
his facility in painting impressionist-style landscapes, I doubt that anybody
would seriously consider the claim to be valid.
One part of Fluxus belongs to history, but another part
still thrives today. Maybe we can think of Fluxus as being like a monarchy.
Monarchs come and go. Kings and Queens are crowned and die. But the monarchy
lives on. Fluxus is dead. Long live Fluxus!

Microsoft will test out the "retro" program for five weeks, and if
successful, will continue the program for the rest of the year. They have a
pile of resources over there and I think they feel pretty confident they have
him contained in the area.

I dont think you want to say defence is not important because

I would be very interested in hearing the thoughts of both Alison and Hannah
about the current status of Fluxus. If they are prepared to address the
Dead/Alive/Both question head-on that would be very interesting, however
their thoughts in a more general and less polemic format would also be
welcome. I.E. What do you think about contemporary Fluxus practice and
where do you see Fluxus going forward?

What is fluxus? It depends on who you

Since we are the "Fluxlist" most of us would argue that

FLUXLIST: Fluxus: Dead or Alive

2006-06-18 Thread Allan Revich

Is Fluxus dead or
alive?

In a nutshell, it
seems to me that Fluxus is dead if it is defined as a movement in art and
culture associated withthegroup of artists who came together in the
early 1960s with George Maciunas at its centre. However, if Fluxus is defined as
an approach to art and culture centred around the idea of Intermedia, then it
remains very much alive. I am strongly inclined towards the latter
view.

This of course is a
question which may never be finally settled, especially given the tautological
nature of the "Fluxus is dead" argument... I.E. If Fluxus is defined as a
movement that existed between 1962 and 1978 or between any other relatively
static dates than the definition itself precludes the possibility that Fluxus is
still alive.

The group known as
Secret Fluxus that was active on this list a while back epitomized this dialogue
since they were alive and active Fluxus artists who seemed to believe that their
performances were "re-enactments" rather the new performances of Fluxus
events.

FLUXLIST: Fluxus and Temporal Space

2006-06-18 Thread Allan Revich

A
Question:A while back I began making labels that said "Fluxus Free
Zone" and then applied them in public spaces. I continue to do so. Part of the
Fluxusness of this was the Intermedia aspect via the interface between
art/design/technology/literature/high-art-low-art/etc. But as I began
experimenting with the "Red Circle with Nothing in it" project I began to
realize that another more challenging theme was running through my Fluxworks.
That is the theme of changing a space by defining it. In the case
of the Fluxus Free Zones the space is public and is defined by the time that the
label remains in affixed to its substrate and by its visibility within the
public space. The Red Circle project defines a smaller physical space - the page
on which it appears - but the red circle with nothing in it also defines a much
larger metaphysical space through the implicit existential questions it
raises.Anyway, what I'm wondering, is how pervasive this theme is
within the Fluxus/Intermedia oeuvre? It seems that the idea of transformative
space is implicit in much of Fluxus; there is the the space contained in a
Fluxkit/Fluxbox which is temporally modified when the objects are removed and
played with; there is the temporal aspect in the Event Scores and Event
Performances too. But how deeply is the idea of transformed space embedded into
Fluxus?Allan

By Kevin Cullen, Globe Staff

2006

In what some see as a mark of respect, and some
Joycean purists consider sacrilege, official commemorations marking Bloomsday,
the single day in 1904 that forms the narrative in James Joyces great novel
Ulysses, have been canceled today in Dublin because they coincide with the
funeral and burial of Charles J. Haughey, Irelands most colorful and
controversial prime minister.
-
Stately, plump Buck Mulligan came from the stairhead,
bearing a bowl of lather on which a mirror and a razor lay crossed. A yellow
dressinggown, ungirdled, was sustained gently behind him on the mild morning
air. He held the bowl aloft and intoned:
--Introibo ad altare
Dei.
Buck Mulligan peeped an instant under the mirror and
then covered the bowl smartly.
--Back to
barracks! he said sternly.
Buck Mulligan's gay voice went on.
--My name is absurd too: Malachi Mulligan, two
dactyls. But it has a Hellenic ring, hasn't it? Tripping and sunny like the buck
himself. We must go to Athens. Will you come if I can get the aunt to fork out
twenty quid?
He turned abruptly his grey searching eyes from the
sea to Stephen's face.
--The aunt
thinks you killed your mother, he said. That's why she won't let me have
anything to do with you.
O that awful deepdown torrent O and the sea the sea crimson sometimes like
fire and the glorious sunsets and the figtrees in the Alameda gardens yes and
all the queer little streets and the pink and blue and yellow houses and the
rosegardens and the jessamine and geraniums and cactuses and Gibraltar as a girl
where I was a Flower of the mountain yes when I put the rose in my hair like the
Andalusian girls used or shall I wear a red yes and how he kissed me under the
Moorish wall and I thought well as well him as another and then I asked him with
my eyes to ask again yes and then he asked me would I yes to say yes my mountain
flower and first I put my arms around him yes and drew him down to me so he
could feel my breasts all perfume yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I
said yes I will Yes.
