Have you tried using the hex equivalent? eg. vga = 0x317 (=791). VGA problem solved, the kernel framebuffer support was active, but the standard SVGA card wasn't. I didn'teven know that framebuffer is required for booting a Linux kernel in a different display resolution. The kernel manual says
