[LAAMN] Jewish police in the ghetto
This is a fascinating article from the Forward about the realities of life in the Lodz ghetto which was eventually virtually liquidated by the nazis. The realities of privilege within genocidal oppression are quite fascinating. You'll need to register (free) to read it online, so I am sending the entire text: http://www.forward.com/main/article.php?id=2492 HomeArts CultureArts Culture Negatives of Lodz PHOTOGRAPHY By Joshua Cohen January 7, 2005 PRAGUE, Czech Republic At a photography exhibit that recently opened here, I noticed an untitled image that, at first sight, bears the unexpected mark of Marc Chagall. In it, a member of the Lodz Ghetto's Judenrat (Jewish Council) police force is standing imperiously and staring directly at the camera's eye while a watering can seems to levitate a breath above his head. But when I looked closer, I thought, no: There's a slight wisp of arm holding up the watering can. This is where the questions begin, and the texture of the photographer's considerable achievement becomes apparent: Did the Jewish policeman know that he was being ridiculed? If he didn't, and he found out, what would happen? How long can seemingly good-natured jibing go on between two Jews in the Lodz Ghetto until their relationship falls to drown in the flows of official power? Or, to put it more simply: How long can a Jew hold a watering can over a Judenrat policeman's head until something terrible happens? Such are the absurdities imbuing the grim surfaces of the photographs of Henryk Ross. Born May 1910, Ross began a career in photojournalism covering sports for a score of Warsaw newspapers. Between 1940 and 1944, with the liquidation and closure of the ghetto in Lodz a large town of a quarter-million Jews prior to the establishment of the ghetto Ross parlayed his skills and experience into work for the Judenrat and their Department of Statistics. The results of his work are 6,000 photos, a private portion of which Ross withheld during his lifetime (he died in 1991), and that were published only in book form earlier this year by Chris Boot in London. They are now on exhibit in the Langhans Gallery in Prague, a city from which almost 5,000 Jews were deported to the Lodz Ghetto, of whom fewer than 300 survived. I was anticipating the total destruction of Polish Jewry, Ross said about his photographic work, about half of it off the Judenrat's forced-official mandate and so forbidden on punishment of death. I wanted to leave a historical record of our martyrdom. Ross offered the world that official, expected record in the 1960s, when after digging up the photographs he buried to survive the war (many negatives were destroyed in the process) he published The Last Journey of the Jews of Lodz. This book featured harrowing images now familiar to the world, the stock-in-trade of Holocaust photography: deportations, executions and so on. From a purely artistic standpoint, these images represented the horrific apex of photography's century. But Ross withheld, and went on withholding. After the war, and the resurrection of his images, Ross sent thousands of negatives all unsorted, half official and half not through the Israeli Consulate in Poland to Israel. The recipients in Israel misplaced the photographs, and it was only through the efforts of David Ben-Gurion himself and the Council Satat (an Israeli arts organization) that 3,000 were found later. When Ross moved to Israel in the late 1960s, more of the private images numbering in the thousands came with him. Finally cataloged in the late 1980s by Ross and his wife, Stefania, these images present a much different image of the Lodz Ghetto than the orthodox interpretations of both the scholarly and popular media. Ross, who survived Lodz as a member of the ghetto cleanup squad still intact when the city was liberated by the Red Army, forced himself to witness all aspects of his ghetto world. And so his Revisionist history was already being revised as he lived it. With a camera permit from the Judenrat, detailed instructions of what to shoot when and extra film he obtained in exchange for his own daily bread, Ross quietly defied orders and captured images that escape most traditional idealizations of ghetto life. They show privilege amid destitution and starvation; they depict a happy few amid total squalor. For those raised with simple, almost Manichean notions of guilt and innocence, it's as if a trapdoor were opened in the floor of a Weltanschaaung, and the whole world fell through it into even greater incoherence. We see children's parties in Lodz thrown by wealthier families who had managed to save their money somehow, or who were opportunistic collaborators and profiteers of ghetto labor. We see young Jewish children playing Nazi and Jew, or Judenrat-official and Jew, one taking a stick to the other while mugging for the

[LAAMN] Joint Statement by San Francisco Eight against torture, COINTELPRO
ashanti Alston [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Paulette D [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject:Fwd: SF * Statement -- Forwarded message -- From: NYC Jericho Movement [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: May 20, 2007 10:35 AM Greetings, Friends Comrades: I am sending you the joint statement from the San Francisco 8 which has been reviewed and agreed upon for publication and distribution. We/I would appreciate your responses and would like to open this for discussion within our community. Please check the various mentioned websites for more information. Revolutionary love unity, Jalil Muntaqim Joint Statement from the San Francisco 8 We, the San Francisco 6, would like to send this joint statement extending our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to all our friends and supporters. As many of you know, this COINTELPRO persecution has been on-going for nearly 36 years. However, in the last few years, in accord with the implementation of the Patriot Act, state and federal authorities initiated plans to stifle political dissent, particularly targeting young activists. Similarly, COINTELPRO's objective was to expose, disrupt, misdirect, discredit, or otherwise neutralize the activities of Black nationalist, hate type organizations and groupings, their leadership, spokesmen, membership, and supporters, and to counter their propensity for violence and civil disorder (COINTELPRO memo of August 25, 1967). The FBI not only targeted the Black Panther Party, but according to this COINTELPRO memo: Intensified attention under this program should be afforded to the activities of such groups as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Revolutionary Action Movement, the Deacons for Defense and Justice, Congress of Racial Equality, and the Nation of Islam. Particular emphasis should be given to extremists who direct the activities and policies of revolutionary or militant groups such as Stokely Carmichael, H. Rap Brown, Elijah Muhammad, and Maxwell Stanford. By March 4, 1968, COINTELPRO was in full operation leading to directing its full attention to the Black Panther Party when it came into existence in October 1968, to prohibit the BPP from developing durable long-term political and organizational relationships with various segments of the Black community. This case represents the continuation of that COINTELPRO objective, to further indicate how the government will persecute today's activists. The government is seeking to rewrite the history of struggle as exemplified by the BPP, venomously trying to define that legacy of struggle as a terrorist movement. We vehemently reject that labeling, as the government attempts to characterize the San Francisco 8 as terrorists, criminals, and wanton killers. They will never say the SF8 were political activists and progressive civil/human rights organizers. They will never say they sought to relieve the community of all forms of state sponsored terrorism that is often found in Black, Asian and Latino communities today. They will never admit to the unconstitutional practices of the FBI COINTELPRO activities, despite the 1974 Senate Church Committee findings condemning those practices. Furthermore, they will never seek to establish remedies for those who are victims of the illegal FBI and local police actions under COINTELPRO, and now under the Patriot Act, if we don't demand they do so. It is with this understanding the SF8 are issuing this joint statement, calling for friends and supporters to organize a national determination to ensure our victory. Ours will be a victory against fear and state terrorism; it will be a defeat against state torture tactics, threats and coercion. This case and our call for action will teach today's activists what to expect from the state in its efforts to suppress dissent and protest of government repression. Indeed, this task will forward a broader understanding of what happened in the Movement of the 60s and 70s, and how COINTELPRO disrupted and destroyed the most viable Black political party that emerged out of the civil rights movement. Ultimately, what is here proposed will tell of a youth movement and how the government sought to undermine and destroy it. The proposal will expose how the government seeks to retaliate because those youth (who are now Elders) did in fact challenge the system of racist oppression. They not only challenged oppressive conditions in our collective communities, but also worked to support all oppressed peoples fighting against colonialism and imperialism at that time. This case evolves out of a history of political struggle in this country, and it is our duty to fulfill that mission by expressing what happened then, and COINTELPRO's negative impact on today's social movements. Therefore, while we engage in a legal battle in the courtroom, it is imperative we urge our friends and supporters to extend the political front in the

So the problem with Bush, Cheney et al is that they were not imperialist enough? This is preposterous. Bush may be the village idiot, but he was an is the front man for a very definite imperial agenda. Cheney et al had and have a very clear imperial strategy for maintaining US world domination. The author seems to lament the contentious nature of US democracy, when in fact the Bush regime has been marked by the utter failure of contentiousness within the hollowed out US imperial democracy. Presumably, someone else (Hillary? Ian Masters, perhaps?) has a more nuanced, sophisticated and authentically imperial strategy for the US that will be more successful [although given the insoluble contradictions of the US empire, I doubt it]. Shouldn't we really be looking for an authentic, intelligent, sophisticated and effective anti-imperialism? --- In laamn@yahoogroups.com, Romi Elnagar [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: IMHO This is one of the best overall analyses of the Bush Regime and well worth the time taken to read it. (This may have been inevitable, given the contentious nature of American democracy.) As for the once-dynamic duo who characterized much of this administration -- Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld (and those clustered around their offices) -- the only empire that really counted for them was the parochial world of Washington, DC, with its lobbyists, bureaucrats, politicians, and assorted supporting think-tankers, all absorbed in their petty turf-wars about who among them would get government money for their minions and projects, overseas or at home. This was the narcissistic province that the Vice President and Secretary of Defense had the urge to dominate with their unitary executive, wartime, commander-in-chief presidency and the foreign wars that made it all possible. --- LAAMN: Los Angeles Alternative Media Network --- Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] --- Subscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] --- Digest: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] --- Help: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] --- Post: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] --- Archive1: http://www.egroups.com/messages/laamn --- Archive2: http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED] --- Yahoo! [LAAMN] Another example of anti-disabled hate talk
THE LAWSON FILE: MICHAEL SAVAGE SAYS AUTISTIC CHILDREN ARE FAKING IT Michael Savage is a piece of shit. Savage said on his radio show autistic children are fakers who just need a little discipline. In 99% of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is, Savage said last week. They don't have a father around to tell them, 'Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. A number of parents of autistic children took to the streets outside his studio today in protest. It's horrific, said Natalie Smith, the Staten Island representative for Autism United. I mean, who would say something like that? These are children, not animals. I don't know what was going on in that guy's head. Ed Moffitt, 75, proudly showed a picture of his 8-year-old grand- nephew, Bob. Bob can't speak. He never called Savage any names, Moffitt told the New York Daily News. We are dying to hear him say 'Mommy' or 'Daddy.' And (Savage) says that he is just acting out? said the boy's grandfather, retired NYPD officer Bob Moffitt. It hurts me. WOR Radio said they couldn't be held responsible for what Savage says because he is a syndicated host broadcasting out of San Francisco. Bullcrap! WOR knows the hateful venom Savage spews everyday. They don't care. Not as long as they get their piece of the pie. Meanwhile, Savage himself told CBS 2 Monday that he would not apologize. My comments on autism were meant to boldly awaken parents and children to the medical community's attempt to label far too many children or adults as autistic, he said in a phone interview with CBS 2. Of course, that isn't what he said on the air. Media Matters for America on Sunday condemned Savage for his comments. What Michael Savage said was foolish, mean-spirited, and hurtful, said J. Jioni Palmer, spokesman for Media Matters. It's unfortunate he would use his radio program to make fun of and belittle these kids. Instead of ridicule and cheap shots, the children suffering from autism and asthma and their families need support and compassion. The leader of a national coalition of disability, civil rights and social justice organizations called on Talk Radio Network to fire Savage. ADA Watch/NCDR called on Talk Radio Network to fire Michael Savage. Jim Ward, founder and president of ADA Watch and the National Coalition for Disability Rights (NCDR), stated: As America prepares to celebrate the 18th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26th, people with disabilities, parents, family members, friends and advocates across the nation are outraged over Savage's latest attack on people with disabilities. His despicable assault on children with autism -- calling them frauds and brats - - is rightly being condemned as hateful and bigoted. But it is just the latest of Savage's numerous and painful attempts to demean and disenfranchise people with disabilities. He added that Savage has also used his bully-pulpit to declare that: -- High levels of asthma impacting minority children was because the children got extra welfare if they were disabled. (July 2008) -- The handicapped workers at the Phoenix Cafe would drool and put dung in diners food. He made up names for the food on the menu, such as nutburger. (July 2002) -- Members of the disability rights community are the Wheelchair Mafia. -- The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the world's first civil rights law for people with disabilities, should be called the Lawyers' Improvement Act. -- His political opponents are degenerate slime bags with mental disorders and have a virus like leukemia. -- When he was younger, he touched the hand of a midget [Dwarf], it really freaked him out and, since that episode, he doesn't like public places. (June 2004) -- The autism lobby of devastated parents is just a scam to get more money. Representatives from Autism United said they expected between 800 and 2,000 people to rally in front of Savage's San Francisco studio on Wednesday to demand an apology and his termination. They said major advertisers Home Depot and Aflac have pulled support and that several stations across the United States have agreed to stop broadcasting Savage's show (Why in the hell were Home Depot and Aflac sponsoring his shows to begin with and why are stations across America helping to spread his hate). It's not like until now Savage has just been another right wing blather box. But you know what is really disgusting? The Savage Nation, his radio show, reaches at least 8.25 million listeners each week, according to Talkers Magazine, making it one of the most listened-to talk radio shows in the nation, behind only The Rush Limbaugh Show and The Sean Hannity Show. What in the name of God is wrong with people? The following is from Newsday. Parents of autistic kids protest radio show host Advocates for autistic children are protesting
[LAAMN] Michigan republicans to challenge voters whose houses are in foreclosure
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, September 11, 2008 8:38 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Lose Your House, Lose Your Vote Republicans plan to foreclose African American voters By Eartha Jane Melzer Michigan Messenger - September 10, 2008 http://www.michiganmessenger.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/ohio- vote1-300x1 85.jpgMichigan The chairman of the Republican Party in Macomb County Michigan, a key swing county in a key swing state, is planning to use a list of foreclosed homes to block people from voting in the upcoming election as part of the state GOP's effort to challenge some voters on Election Day. 'We will have a list of foreclosed homes and will make sure people aren't voting from those addresses,' party chairman James Carabelli told Michigan Messenger in a telephone interview earlier this week. He said the local party wanted to make sure that proper electoral procedures were followed. State election rules allow parties to assign 'election challengers' to polls to monitor the election. In addition to observing the poll workers, these volunteers can challenge the eligibility of any voter provided they 'have a good reason to believe' that the person is not eligible to vote. One allowable reason is that the person is not a 'true resident of the city or township.' The Michigan Republicans' planned use of foreclosure lists is apparently an attempt to challenge ineligible voters as not being 'true residents.' One expert questioned the legality of the tactic. 'You can't challenge people without a factual basis for doing so,' said J. Gerald Hebert, a former voting rights litigator for the U.S. Justice Department who now runs the Campaign Legal Center, a Washington D.C.- based public-interest law firm. 'I don't think a foreclosure notice is sufficient basis for a challenge, because people often remain in their homes after foreclosure begins and sometimes are able to negotiate and refinance.' As for the practice of challenging the right to vote of foreclosed property owners, Hebert called it, 'mean- spirited.' GOP ties to state's largest foreclosure law firm The Macomb GOP's plans are another indication of how John McCain's campaign stands to benefit from the burgeoning number of foreclosures in the state. McCain's regional headquarters are housed in the office building of foreclosure specialists Trott Trott. The firm's founder, David A. Trott, has raised between $100,000 and $250,000 for the Republican nominee. The Macomb County party's plans to challenge voters who have defaulted on their house payments is likely to disproportionately affect African-Americans who are overwhelmingly Democratic voters. More than 60 percent of all sub-prime loans - the most likely kind of loan to go into default - were made to African-Americans in Michigan, according to a report issued last year by the state's Department of Labor and Economic Growth. Challenges to would-be voters Statewide, the Republican Party is gearing up for a comprehensive voter challenge campaign, according to Denise Graves, party chair for Republicans in Genessee County, which encompasses Flint. The party is creating a spreadsheet of election challenger volunteers and expects to coordinate a training with the regional McCain campaign, Graves said in an interview with Michigan Messenger. Whether the Republicans will challenge voters with foreclosed homes elsewhere in the state is not known. Kelly Harrigan, deputy director of the GOP's voter programs, confirmed that she is coordinating the group's 'election integrity' program. Harrigan said the effort includes putting in place a legal team, as well as training election challengers. She said the challenges to voters were procedural rather than personal. She referred inquiries about the vote challenge program to communications director Bill Knowles who promised information but did not return calls. Party chairman Carabelli said that the Republican Party is training election challengers to 'make sure that [voters] are who they say who they are.' When asked for further details on how Republicans are compiling challenge lists, he said, 'I would rather not tell you all the things we are doing.' Vote suppression: Not an isolated effort Carabelli is not the only Republican Party official to suggest the targeting of foreclosed voters. In Ohio, Doug Preisse, director of elections in Franklin County (around the city of Columbus) and the chair of the local GOP, told The Columbus Dispatch that he has not ruled out challenging voters before the election due to foreclosure-related address issues. Hebert, the voting-rights lawyer, sees a connection between Priesse's remarks and Carabelli's plans. 'At a minimum what you are seeing is a fairly comprehensive effort by the Republican Party, a systematic broad-based effort to put up obstacles for people to vote,' he said. 'Nobody is contending that these people are not legally registered to vote. 'When you are

[LAAMN] Please vote @ KPFK and get your friends 2 vote by 10-13
Listener sponsors can still vote in KPFK's station board election until midnight Oct. 13 because of an extension to achieve a quorum of listeners. Contact the local election supervisor, Les Radke, at the station if you have lost your ballot. Please vote, hopefully for Aryana Gladney, Lawrence Reyes, Michael Novick, Brenda Medina and the other candidates of www.grassrootskpfk.org, but vote even if you cast a blank ballot, because if there is no quorum (at least 10% of listener sponsors) the whole election will be null and void. Please forward widely; if you have a friend who's a listener sponsor, please make sure they vote. Thanks to all who voted in the KPFK local station board election -- we just made quorum, including a small number of blank ballots, and results are posted on the station and network websites -- you can go to www.kpfk.org for the link to the elections and KPFK results. Thanks especially to those who voted for candidates on www.grassrootskpfk.org -- four of our members were elected - Lydia Brazon, me (Michael Novick), Chuck Anderson and Brenda Medina - and two are first alternates in case a vacancy opens -- Aryana Gladney and Lawrence Reyes, according to the tentative lists posted there (finalized next month, apparently). [LAAMN] LA support vigils for prison hunger strikers and background info, resources
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Thandisizwe Chimurenga, 213-321-0575 FAMILY MEMBERS, CONCERNED CITIZENS DEMAND AN END TO TORTURE IN CALIFORNIAâS PRISONS Monday, July 18 · 9:00am - 5:00pm Ronald Reagan State Building 3rd and Spring Sts., Los Angeles, CA Delegation to meet with Gov. Jerry Brown, Press Conference @ 11 a.m. Family members and concerned citizens will convene on Monday, July 18, 2011, at the Ronald Reagan State Office Building, 3rd and Spring Sts., from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. The all-day vigil will bring attention to the more than 6,000 prisoners across the state who have participated in an indefinite hunger strike since July 1, especially those in the Pelican Bay and Corcoran Security Housing Units facing severe medical consequences. There is also a 7:00 PM vigil planned at the County Jail, 441 Bauchet Street, L.A. The prisoners are on strike to bring much-needed attention to the conditions of their confinement, conditions that many consider torture. A delegation representing family members of the striking prisoners will also go to CA Governor Jerry Brownâs office at 11 a.m. They demand that the Governor order the CA Dept of Corrections to meet the strikersâ demands to end inhumane treatment in the stateâs Security Housing Units (SHUs). U.S. and international human rights organizations have condemned SHUs as having cruel, inhumane, and torturous conditions. CA SHU prisoners are kept in windowless, 6X10-foot cells, 23½ hours a day, for years on end. The CDCR operates four SHUs in its system at Corcoran, Ca. Correctional Institution, Valley State Prison for Women and Pelican Bay. The demands of the prisoners, many of whom are in now in medical crisis since going without food or water since July 1, are: 1. End Group Punishment Administrative Abuse; 2. Abolish the Debriefing Policy, and Modify Active/Inactive Gang Status Criteria 3. Comply with the US Commission on Safety and Abuse in Americaâs Prisons 2006 Recommendations Regarding an End to Long-Term Solitary Confinement 4. Provide Adequate and Nutritious Food 5. Expand and Provide Constructive Programming and Privileges for Indefinite SHU Status Inmates. Prisoners at the Pelican Bay State Prison in Crescent City, CA initiated the hunger strike on July 1, but have since been joined by prisoners at Corcoran, Tehachapi, Calipatria and others. The prisoners have also stated that they are willing to give up their lives unless their demands are met. Press coverage of this significant development and humanitarian crisis has been inadequate up to this point. TODAY!!! 12:00PM-3:00PM PROTEST at San Bernardino County Central Detention Center (CDC) 630 East Rialto Avenue San Bernardino, California 92415 According to Prisoner Solidarity Blog: âThis afternoon leaders of the Pelican Bay hunger strike unanimously rejected a proposal from the CDCR to end the strike. In response to the prisonersâ five, straightforward demands, the CDCR distributed a vaguely worded document stating that it would âeffect a comprehensive assessment of its existing policy and procedureâ about the secure housing units (SHUs). The document gave no indication if any changes would be made at all Despite the promises from the federal Receiver overseeing the CDCR, no one has received salt tablets or vitamins hundreds of prisoners at Pelican Bay remain on strike, with thousands more participating throughout the CAâs 33 prisons.â Go here to read the whole article: http://prisonerhungerstrikesolidarity.wordpress.com/2011/07/16/pelican-bay-hunger-strikers-reject-proposal-the-strike-continues/ These are updates we have from letters, posts, facebook messages, conversations, emails. Tehachapi A mother went to go visit her son in the SHU and was told that all the men on B yard are not eating, except for one who is a diabetic. Her son had lost about 20 lbs. and she reported that he looked extremely skinny, his skinned looked sucked in and eyes really big. She said he came out to visit with this very ugly dirty suit and believes they are not allowing them to do laundry. He was told about the protest that will be taking place tomorrow in San Bernardino and broke down crying. He thanked everyone who has been involved in organizing efforts. He said it is becoming very challenging but he is going to hold on and keep going strong. He said they had heard almost nothing about the strike. They had only managed to get ahold of one article, but it had no mention that Tehachapi was also on hunger strike and they have been going since July 1st. He urged to bring awareness to the fact that they are still on hunger strike and will continue to be. Donovan I received a letter from my man today letting me know the inmates in the hole at Donovan are participating in the hunger strike there is absolutely no news coverage in the San Diego area. All I know is he's telling me the men are eating canteen
[LAAMN] Can you help send L.A. delegation to national political prisoners conf in DC?
The date is fast approaching for the founding meeting in Washington DC of a National Confederation to Free Unjustly Incarcerated and Political Prisoners. The Los Angeles chapter of the Jericho Amnesty Movement is seeking financial support to help send a delegation from our area to this important national gathering, which is seeking to unite all forces involved in the struggle over political prisoners and for justice in a principled united national formation with an accountable work plan and timetable. Comrade Laalaa of the Black Riders Liberation Party, a member of the local Jericho Amnesty Movement chapter, is the national youth coordinator of Jericho and it is vital to ensure her participation at the National Confederation meeting. We would also like to send another member of the BRLP, along with Lawrence Reyes of the Puerto Rican Alliance, Guillermo Suarez of the Movimiento de Liberacion Nacional Mexicano, and Michael Novick of Anti-Racist Action (ARA-LA/PART) to the founding meeting in DC. But to do so, we urgently need financial contributions (or possibly the donation of frequent flyer to cover one or more tickets. Air fare is approximately $400 per person round trip. Transportation and frugal accommodations in the DC area for the 3 day gathering will be provided by the hosts. If you can help in any way with a donation toward this cause, please get in touch ASAP via email, or call 310-890-7104. This conference is an opportunity to bring significant national momentum to bear on the cases of political prisoners here in CA, including Ruchell Magee, Hugo Pinell and Romaine Chip Fitzgerald, some of the longest held political prisoners in the world, Gerardo Hernandez of the Cuban 5, Comrade Noor and General T.A.C.O. of the Black Riders (Noor was sent back to state prison after resisting police abuse outside the trial of killer cop Johannes Mehserle; T.A.C.O. is still forced to wear an electronic GPS ankle monitor [21st Century slave shackle] off a frame-up conviction). Numerous of the prisoners involved in the hunger strikes at Pelican Bay, Corcoran, Tehachapi and other CA prisons have been in communication (before and since) with LA Jericho and its constituent groups, particularly the BRLP. Please help us bring their message of unity, solidarity and struggle to the National Confederation founding meeting in D.C. Aug 19-21 by making a generous financial contribution today. We know that all grassroots peoples' organizations are strapped for funds these days, but we believe this significant initiative for justice and liberation merits your support! Thanks in advance. The next planning meeting for the LA Housing and Hunger Crisis Conference will take place Saturday Feb. 19 at 10 AM until noon at the Southern California Library for Social Studies and Research, 6120 S. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles. The conference is bringing together people at a grassroots level experiencing the ills of gentrification, foreclosures, evictions, privatization of public housing, as well as those struggling for human rights and food and water sovereignty. Participants include GrassrootsKPFK, Union de Vecinos, Black Riders and Brown Riders Liberation Party, Venice Justice Committee, the Coffee Party, the MLK Coalition for Jobs, Justice and Peace, tenants rights organizers from Lincoln Heights, and many others. The conference is planned for early April at LA Trade Tech College and will feature opportunities for people to learn about each others' struggles, as well as concrete skills sharing and a cultural component. There is a googlegroup set up at h...@googlegroups.com A planning meeting for a Peoples' Justice Conference in Los Angeles, focused on issues of police abuse/racial profiling, political prisoners/political repression, the prison industrial complex/mass incarceration, juvenile justice and opposition to the death penalty will take place on Saturday, February 19 from 12 noon-2:00 PM at the Southern California Library for Social Studies and Research, 6120 S. Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles. The conference, incorporating efforts initiated simultaneously by the GrassrootsKPFK coalition, the LA Coalition for Justice for Oscar Grant, the Justice Working Group of the MLK Coalition for Jobs, Justice and Peace, and the LA chapter of the Jericho Amnesty Movement to free political prisoners, is designed to bring together people getting hit by and dealing with all the different aspects of the so-called criminal justice system -- the cops, the courts, the prisons, jails and juvenile halls, and various forms of political repression and counter-insurgency by the state, such as COINTELPRO, grand jury witch-hunts, immigration raids, checkpoints and detention, etc. It is designed a working conference building unity among grassroots forces facing and dealing with these issues, aimed at developing solidarity and effective fight back and organizing strategies. We want to look at issues like medical mistreatment inside the prisons, isolation as torture in jails and prisons, ban the box and other reintegration strategies for ex-convicts, and abolition of the death penalty and the prison-industrial complex. We want to build practical connections between people trying to end the schools-to-jail pipeline and the criminalization of youth with those resisting racial profiling and police killings and those struggling to free political prisoners. We invite the involvement of all dealing with these various aspects of the system. For more information, call 310-890-7104. [LAAMN] Latest issue of Turning the Tide - LA mailing party Tues, Wed at Peace Center
PART's Perspective: Occupy: The Future by Michael Novick, Anti-Racist Action-Los Angeles/People Against Racist Terror (ARA-LA/PART) A key part of the corporate media's approach to sucking people into the swamp of the electoral charade, so as to regain the compliance, if not the consent, of the US populace, has been to write the premature obituary of the Occupy Wall Street movement. But as Mark Twain once said, Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. Not only is Occupy alive and kicking, and sinking roots, it is more necessary today than it was when it launched a year ago. Occupy has had some undeniable successes, most notably in thrusting the issue of economic inequality and the parasitic nature of the ruling 1% into the public discourse. But by almost every measure, the oppressive and exploitative social, economic and political conditions that gave birth to it are worse today than a year ago. 46.2 million people now live below the poverty line, the highest level in almost two decades, and more than on October 1, 2011. The share of Americans without health coverage fell slightly from 16.3 percent to 15.7%, but that's still 48.6 million people. Just like in the former Soviet Union after privatization, life expectancy for poor people with less than a high school education has been falling in the U.S. Life expectancy for white women without a h.s. diploma dropped 5 years by 2008, the most recent figures in a current study. There's no question that the ongoing economic crisis and growing inequality have lowered life expectancy still further. US women have dropped from 14th to 41st place internationally in expected life-span . Median real household income fell 1.7% and income inequality rose in 2011. The Gini index, a measure of inequality, rose 1.6 percent from 2010 to 2011, the first time the Gini index has shown an annual increase since 1993. Real income of the highest 20% rose 1.6 percent, and the top 5 percent of earners saw their incomes increase 4.9 percent. At the same time, the middle-income quintiles fell between 1 percent and 1.9 percent each. This year, the incomes of the poorest have dropped significantly again, a loss of almost 20% cumulatively since the start of the Great Recession in 2007, down from a little under $15,000 a year to less than $12,000 per capita. Global average sea level rose at an average rate of around 1.7 ± 0.3 mm per year from 1950 to 2009 and at a satellite-measured average rate of about 3.3 ± 0.4 mm per year from 1993 to 2009. Overall, land and sea temperatures were fairly level for the year (the 4th hottest on record), but that's because of La Nina effects on the ocean. Land temperatures, particularly in North America, climbed dramatically. Arctic sea ice was reduced to a record low, and drought and record high temperatures have been unrelenting. Corn crops in the US have been decimated. A new CSU tuition hike would require students to pay $58 million more next year. Total student debt in the U.S. now exceeds $1 trillion, and is climbing (see the Student Debt Clock for updating figures: http://www.finaid.org/loans/studentloandebtclock.phtml A flood of foreclosures in states that make it a judicial process swelled in the aftermath of the $25 billion foreclosure abuse settlement, signed off on in April by the Justice Dept. and state Attorneys General. It gave lenders a slap on the wrist by paying off cash-strapped state governments and a green light when pursuing foreclosures, allowing many banks to push more cases though the pipeline. Illinois, where foreclosures were up 42% year over year, and Florida, where there was a 16% annual increase in August, now claim the two highest foreclosure rates. They dethroned Arizona and California because their foreclosures shot up, not because AZ and CA have dropped much. In Illinois, one in every 298 properties has been hit with a foreclosure filing. There are now about 24 vacant homes in the U.S. for every one of the estimated three-quarters of a million unhoused people. Of course, this doesn't count the largest and fastest-growing public housing system in the country -- prisons and jails. Over 2,300,000 people are incarcerated on any given day in the U.S. with an additional 5 million plus under some form of custodial supervision such as probation or parole. Federal immigration authorities deported a record number of undocumented immigrants in fiscal year 2011, nearly 392,000 people. Another 429,000 people were detained by I.C.E., also an all-time high (not counted as incarcerated). The annual number of deportations doubled from the start of Bush's first term to the end of Obama's. The federal government is on track in 2012 to deport more parents of legal U.S. citizen children than were deported in the prior 10 years combined! Obama's executive action for the Dreamers, youth brought to the US and raised here without papers, is really a Delayed Departure

[LAAMN] OLA themed G.A. on police, prisons, Pershing Sq. Sat. Oct 20, 1 PM
There will be a Themed General Assembly on police, prisons, and the criminal injustice system this Saturday, October 20th starting at 1:00 PM at Pershing Square (Sixth and Olive), as a build-up towards the October 22nd national Day of Action to stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation that OLA is participating in next Monday. Presenters include Michael Novick (who moderates the Stop Police Abuse Now! list on yahoogroups), and Hamid Khan of the Coalition to Stop LAPD Spying (at 2:00 PM). Others invited include the O22 Coalition, the Black Riders Liberation Party, Jericho Amnesty Movement, and Bilal Ali. There will also be information regarding the Agreement to End Hostilities inside the prisons, and the call for an Occupy the Beat campaign from the CA prison hunger strikers at the Corcoran SHU. Other issues of concern are the ballot measures in CA to amend three strikes and end the death penalty. If you would like to participate or present, contact Michael Novick at 323-901-4269, or email antiracistaction...@yahoo.com. Please forward this information, and let's build back up the Occupy L.A. [LAAMN] LA General Strike/Port Action working group meets at Occupy LA
A group from OccupyLA, along with a number of port truck drivers, at least one longshore worker and people from the Labor Committee of OccupyLA met last Sunday to discuss a possible port action, building up towards a general strike in Los Angeles. The next meeting will take place on Sunday, Nov. 13 at OccupyLA (City Hall) on the west steps at 12 noon. People are coming up from Occupy Long Beach as well, and we have been reaching out to a number of different sets of port truck drivers, aiming at an action on Dec. 12 tied in to the Day without a Migrant work stoppage and school walkout. Following the meeting, some participants will be heading down to Wilmington to join a locally-organized community gathering at Waterfront Park from 3-5:30 PM that will feature a teach-in about Occupy Wall Street and a speak out about community issues and solutions. For more information, call Michael at 323-901-4269. --- LAAMN: Los Angeles Alternative Media Network --- Unsubscribe: mailto:laamn-unsubscr...@egroups.com --- Subscribe: mailto:laamn-subscr...@egroups.com --- Digest: mailto:laamn-dig...@egroups.com --- Help: mailto:laamn-ow...@egroups.com?subject=laamn --- Post: mailto:la...@egroups.com --- Archive1: http://www.egroups.com/messages/laamn --- Archive2: http://www.mail-archive.com/laamn@egroups.com --- Yahoo! [LAAMN] General Strike Preparation meeting Tuesday 7:30 at 2003 E. 1st St.
The Occupy Los Angeles General Strike Preparation Committee is having a critical meeting Tuesday, March 6 at 7:30 PM at Corazon del Pueblo, 2003 E. First Street in Boyle Heights (corner Cummings, just east of the I-5 Freeway) -- a few blocks east of the Plaza Mariachi station on the Metro Gold Line. This is a really important meeting to decide on the Occupy action and messaging on May 1st and how to coordinate with other labor and immigrants' actions taking place on that day. We need to come up with a clear plan of organizing and implementing our efforts to build a community base and nurture alliances so that the May 1 General Strike can have the paradigm-shifting impact of the original Occupations, and put us in a stronger position organizationally and politically to move forward beyond May 1. The points of unity of the May 1 General Strike call from Occupy LA are: No work - no school - no commerce - all out in the streets; For Immigrants' Rights For Economic, Social and Environmental Justice and Labor Rights For Peace with Justice For Civil Liberties - End the Police State For Housing, Education and Health Care as Human Rights For Women's Rights, LGBTQ (gay) Rights and Gender Equity A day without the 99% ... [LAAMN] Meetings Sat 11-17 to free political prisoners, build inter-communal solidarity
The Jericho Amnesty Movement to free all political prisoners will hold its monthly meeting (third Saturday) on Saturday November 17 at 5:00 PM at the Southern California Library for Social Studies Research, 6120 S. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles (between Slauson and Gage). The agenda includes the upcoming Jericho national elections for steering committee officers, and a national proposal for 3 co-chairs. We will also read and respond to letters from political prisoners and hunger strikers. The Jericho meeting will be followed at 6:00 PM by the follow-up gathering of the Inter-Communal Solidarity Committee which held a successful launch party at the Library last week for its survival/serve-the-people programs, such as Hood Health, Break the Lock, the George Jackson Freedom School, and Turning the Tide. We'll hear from Hood Health about plans for a build-up meeting in its campaign for community health awareness and empowerment on Saturday, Dec. 1 at the So Cal Library from 1-4:00 PM. [LAAMN] WBAI needs emergency funds to keep Empire State transmitter
*** PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY WBAI/Pacifica Radio is in critical condition and, if at any point in the past 53 years you called 99.5 FM home, we're asking you to help, right now. The station is in debt to the Empire State Building to the tune of $250,000, representing overdue rent. The landlord seeks both payment and to break the lease and expel the station's broadcast transmitter. Without a transmitter, our radio dies. In spite of our deep dissatisfaction with the lack of process and other rights violations at WBAI, and questions about how and why conditions could have been allowed to reach this point, we lend our voice to the call for contributions that are as generous as you can afford. In the coming days, we will provide more background information, plans to prevent a recurrence, and other ways you can become involved. We thank former board member Nia Bediako for helping to arrange for the move to low cost temporary studios at City College in Harlem and for forcing the issue of the transmitter lawsuit and the one by our former Wall Street landlord into public discussion. We are also grateful to Mimi Rosenberg for having gotten the station qualified and free legal representation. Please donate online to the Transmitter Fund at http://www.give2wbai.org or by mail, with a check to WBAI and the word Transmitter Fund in the memo section, at: WBAI Church Street Station P.O. Box 7032 New York, NY 10008 Or you can make your donation by calling the Call Center at 516-620-3602 - be sure to specify WBAI Transmitter Fund. *** WBAI Justice Unity Campaign www.justiceunity.org 212-591-2111 i...@justiceunity.org --- LAAMN: Los Angeles Alternative Media Network --- Unsubscribe: mailto:laamn-unsubscr...@egroups.com --- Subscribe: mailto:laamn-subscr...@egroups.com --- Digest: mailto:laamn-dig...@egroups.com --- Help: mailto:laamn-ow...@egroups.com?subject=laamn --- Post: mailto:la...@egroups.com --- Archive1: http://www.egroups.com/messages/laamn --- Archive2: http://www.mail-archive.com/laamn@egroups.com --- Yahoo! [LAAMN] Coincidence, conspiracy and class struggle
Coincidence, Conspiracy and Class Struggle By Michael Novick, Anti-Racist Action-Los Angeles/People Against Racist Terror (ARA-LA/PART) A well-noted logical fallacy to which the human brain is particularly prone is post hoc, ergo propter hoc. In English, After this, therefore because of this -- attributing causation to what is merely sequence. It's the basis of most superstitions, probably a lot of religious belief, and definitely many conspiracy theories. However, while correlation does not imply causation, the correlation or coinciding of several related factors or events can often shed light on certain sometimes-hidden or obscured realities. I'd like to explore this in regard to three recent events or developments: the untimely death of Hugo Chavez, the selection of Pope Francis, the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the sudden conversion of the US political elite, Republican and Democrat alike, to the cause of comprehensive immigration reform. Whether the cancer that took the life of Chavez was actually induced by covert US action, as some have claimed, will probably never be determined, and is, in a way, beside the point. US hostility toward Chavez is undeniable, as was US willingness to countenance a coup attempt against him under George W. Bush. Christian fundamentalist and former GOP presidential candidate Pat Robertson went on the air quite openly to advocate covert action to kill Chavez. The endless series of CIA assassination plots against Fidel Castro are well documented. The reason Malcolm X described the assassination of John Kennedy as chickens coming home to roost was because the US role in the assassination of its own puppets in South Vietnam was widely recognized. In any event, the main thing is that Chavez's death has focused attention on US efforts to reassert its control over not only Venezuela but all the countries to its south. In turn, that should heighten our awareness that Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay, Chile and other nations have been slipping the traces of domination by the US imperial Colossus of the North. Venezuela has developed a relationship with Iran that undermines US/Saudi efforts to dominate OPEC and oil prices. China has been expanding its commercial and diplomatic ties with Latin America, including even Mexico. These all represent both the weakening of US hegemony that has already taken place, and the prospect of still greater threats to US imperialism. The Republican 180 degree volte-face on immigration issues, accepting even a path to citizenship, was so precipitous that it left Jeb Bush, who wrote a book advocating immigration reform, with egg on his face. His effort to nudge his party back towards his brother's position, by moderating GOP hostility to the undocumented with a call for legalization without citizenship, was left in the dust by the time it was published. This required him to do an embarrassingly visible and public flip-flop on the path to citizenship question. Most commentators attribute this rapid-fire change to crass, immediate electoral considerations, but I think something deeper is at work. The Republicans already have more high-profile, high-ranking Latino office holders than the Democrats, including Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz and Gov. Susana Martinez of New Mexico. The shift on immigration reform reflects not just electoral demographics, but the larger question of containing the insurgent impact of increasingly fearless undocumented workers and youth, and grappling with the centrality of migrant labor to the Empire in both the periphery and the homeland. Finally, eyebrows were raised when the last pope resigned, for the first time in over 600 years. There was subdued speculation about what might have precipitated such a remarkable event. Benedict, AKA Ratzinger, had evidenced no embarrassment over his own role in the Hitler Youth in an era when the Roman Catholic Church had given its blessings to Hitler and Mussolini. He had expressed no remorse or remedy for institutionalized child sexual abuse by priests, nor corrected to any significant degree Catholic hostility towards Islam. The selection of a Latin American (though admittedly of Italian descent) may help explain his early departure from the papacy. Again, commentators focus on his successor's alleged humility, simplicity and `orientation towards the poor,' and on the Church's need to build and rebuild in the global South, where its demographic future lies, as well as to stem the tide of conversions to evangelical Protestantism that have been cutting into archdiocese in Brazil, Mexico and elsewhere in Latin America, as well as immigrant congregations in the US. But a deeper look again suggests more at work than demographics and marketing. The Roman Catholic Church, institutionally, is still one of the main forces of reaction in the world, well integrated into

[LAAMN] Transform Now Ploughshares peace activists deemed terrorist saboteurs
May 15, 2013 http://www.counterpunch.org/2013/05/15/how-the-us-turned-three-pacifists-into-violent-terrorists/ The Persecution of the Oak Ridge Three How the US Turned Three Pacifists Into Violent Terrorists by FRAN QUIGLEY In just ten months, the United States managed to transform an 82 year-old Catholic nun and two pacifists from non-violent anti-nuclear peace protestors accused of misdemeanor trespassing into federal felons convicted of violent crimes of terrorism. Now in jail awaiting sentencing for their acts at an Oak Ridge, TN nuclear weapons production facility, their story should chill every person concerned about dissent in the US. Here is how it happened. In the early morning hours of Saturday June 28, 2012, long-time peace activists Sr. Megan Rice, 82, Greg Boertje-Obed, 57, and Michael Walli, 63, cut through the chain link fence surrounding the Oak Ridge Y-12 nuclear weapons production facility and trespassed onto the property. Y-12, called the Fort Knox of the nuclear weapons industry, stores hundreds of metric tons of highly enriched uranium and works on every single one of the thousands of nuclear weapons maintained by the U.S. Describing themselves as the Transform Now Plowshares, the three came as non-violent protestors to symbolically disarm the weapons. They carried bibles, written statements, peace banners, spray paint, flowers, candles, small baby bottles of blood, bread, hammers with biblical verses on them and wire cutters. Their intent was to follow the words of Isaiah 2:4: They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. Sr. Megan Rice has been a Catholic sister of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus for over sixty years. Greg Boertje-Obed, a married carpenter who has a college age daughter, is an Army veteran and lives at a Catholic Worker house in Duluth Minnesota. Michael Walli, a two-term Vietnam veteran turned peacemaker, lives at the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker house in Washington DC. In the dark, the three activists cut through a boundary fence which had signs stating No Trespassing. The signs indicate that unauthorized entry, a misdemeanor, is punishable by up to 1 year in prison and a $100,000 fine. No security arrived to confront them. So the three climbed up a hill through heavy brush, crossed a road, and kept going until they saw the Highly Enriched Uranium Materials Facility (HEUMF) surrounded by three fences, lit up by blazing lights. Still no security. So they cut through the three fences, hung up their peace banners, and spray-painted peace slogans on the HEUMF. Still no security arrived. They began praying and sang songs like Down by the Riverside and Peace is Flowing Like a River. When security finally arrived at about 4:30 am, the three surrendered peacefully, were arrested, and jailed. The next Monday July 30, Rice, Boertje-Obed, and Walli were arraigned and charged with federal trespassing, a misdemeanor charge which carries a penalty of up to one year in jail. Frank Munger, an award-winning journalist with the Knoxville News Sentinel, was the first to publicly wonder, If unarmed protesters dressed in dark clothing could reach the plant's core during the cover of dark, it raised questions about the plant's security against more menacing intruders. On Wednesday August 1, all nuclear operations at Y-12 were ordered to be put on hold in order for the plant to focus on security. The security stand-down was ordered by security contractor in charge of Y-12, BW Y-12 (a joint venture of the Babcock and Wilcox Company and Bechtel National Inc.) and supported by the National Nuclear Security Administration. On Thursday August 2, Rice, Boertje-Obed, and Walli appeared in court for a pretrial bail hearing. The government asked that all three be detained. One prosecutor called them a potential danger to the community and asked that all three be kept in jail until their trial. The US Magistrate allowed them to be released. Sr. Megan Rice walked out of the jail and promptly admitted to gathered media that the three had indeed gone onto the property and taken action in protest of nuclear weapons. But we had to we were doing it because we had to reveal the truth of the criminality which is there, that's our obligation, Rice said. She also challenged the entire nuclear weapons industry: We have the power, and the love, and the strength and the courage to end it and transform the whole project, for which has been expended more than 7.2 trillion dollars, she said The truth will heal us and heal our planet, heal our diseases, which result from the disharmony of our planet caused by the worst weapons in the history of mankind, which should not exist. For this we give our lives for the truth about the terrible existence of these weapons. Then the government began increasing the
[LAAMN] Surveillance and Exploitation - Do the Math
The Mathematics of Repression and Exploitation by Michael Novick, Anti-Racist Action/People Against Racist Terror The New York Times late last year ran an interesting series about mathematics -- Me, Myself and Math -- how numbers appear in and affect our lives, by a mathematician, Steven Strogatz, skillful at explaining abstract ideas in concrete ways. The whole series is well worth reading and following up on the source material he cites. I want to suss out some key points that he glosses over too quickly in a couple of the pieces. They touch on issues of probability, weighted averages, and of scale that show how flawed common sense can sometimes be without the study of reality. There are other segments too, such as catastrophe theory, that he relates to the outbreak of uprisings like the Arab Spring, and to sudden economic disjunctures where government policies seem to have little or negative effect, and the economy drops precipitously or stagnates. Those are also worth study and analysis, but I'll stick with two points here. One is some insight into 'networks' that suggest a counter-insurgency strategy that is probably already well along, and the other is the difficulty of getting people to grasp just HOW unequal economic inequality really is. The first requires a longish excerpt from Strogatz's writing, which starts out about social networking, and gets to the juicy point in a footnote. Here's the link: Me, Myself and Math September 17, 2012, 9:00 pm http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/09/17/friends-you-can-count-on/#postComment 59 Comments Friends You Can Count On By STEVEN STROGATZ You spend your time tweeting, friending, liking, poking, and in the few minutes left, cultivating friends in the flesh. Yet sadly, despite all your efforts, you probably have fewer friends than most of your friends have. But don't despair -- the same is true for almost all of us. Our friends are typically more popular than we are. Don't believe it? Consider these results from a colossal recent study of Facebook by Johan Ugander, Brian Karrer, Lars Backstrom and Cameron Marlow. (Disclosure: Ugander is a student at Cornell, and I'm on his doctoral committee.) They examined all of Facebook's active users, which at the time included 721 million people -- about 10 percent of the world's population -- with 69 billion friendships among them. First, the researchers looked at how users stacked up against their circle of friends. They found that a user's friend count was less than the average friend count of his or her friends, 93 percent of the time. Next, they measured averages across Facebook as a whole, and found that users had an average of 190 friends, while their friends averaged 635 friends of their own. Studies of offline social networks show the same trend. It has nothing to do with personalities; it follows from basic arithmetic. For any network where some people have more friends than others, it's a theorem that the average number of friends of friends is always greater than the average number of friends of individuals. This phenomenon has been called the friendship paradox. ... He explains the math. Like many of math's beautiful ideas, the friendship paradox has led to exciting practical applications unforeseen by its discoverers. It recently inspired an early-warning system for detecting outbreaks of infectious diseases. In a study conducted at Harvard during the H1N1 flu pandemic of 2009, the network scientists Nicholas Christakis and James Fowler monitored the flu status of a large cohort of random undergraduates and (here's the clever part) a subset of friends they named. Remarkably, the friends behaved like sentinels -- they got sick about two weeks earlier than the random undergraduates, presumably because they were more highly connected within the social network at large, just as one would have expected from the friendship paradox. In other settings, a two-week lead time like this could be very useful to public health officials planning a response to contagion before it strikes the masses. ... Then here's the footnote: Besides suggesting a strategy for detecting infection, the friendship paradox suggests a strategy for combating it. The idea is to immunize the friends of random nodes, rather than the nodes themselves. See R. Cohen, S. Havlin, and D. ben-Avraham, http://polymer.bu.edu/%7Ehes/networks/chb03.pdf Efficient immunization strategies for computer networks and populations, Physical Review Letters, Vol. 91, No. 24 (2003), 247901. Using computer simulations, the authors find that this approach is much more effective than random immunization at halting an epidemic. The technique achieves herd [Note from MN: baa-baa-baa] immunity when around 20 to 40 percent of the friend population is immunized, as opposed to the 80 or 90 percent coverage needed when the population at large is immunized. And in
