Hello Colin,

the default setting is
user: openthinclient
pass: openthinclient

The root password isn't set. You can create your own pass with sudo passwd.

 Good Morning –

I’ve just started trying to configure the virtual appliance on an ESX
server and I’m looking for any documentation on the appliance – at least
something that lists default settings and the root password? I’m having some
trouble with configuring it in our environment and was hoping to uncover the
 basics.

Re: [openthinclient-user] Rdesktop problem

2010-10-20 Thread Stecher, Alexander
Hello,

I guess, there is something wrong with the configuration.
Try to start the rdesktop application in the shell:
1) open a shell with strg+alt+shift+x
2) right click on the rdesktop-icon - properties - launcher
3) copy the complete command line (with hash)
4) insert the command line in the shell and look what happens

Good luck!

  Hi,

using the virtual appliance everything goes fine but:

I can see and click (double-click) the icon on a thin client. The
application seems to start: “Rdesktop RDP client wird gestartet”

showing in the taskbar. After about 12 seconds it terminates. Nothing
 happens.

 Any ideas?

Hello Rob,

the DNS does not work.
If the server hasn't an internet connection, there are problems with
name resolution.
After long time with no DNS-response, the client has got a time-out
and continues its boot sequence.

Please configure a local DNS e.g. in your router or DHCP-server, this
should solve the problem.
Good luck!

 Hi everybody,

I'm in the process of testing OTC 1.0 and experienced a problem with
optical media, which would be a showstopper for using OTC in our
environment: When a cdrom is inserted in a local (S)ATA optical drive,
it's mounted automatically (nice!) but cannot be ejected by the user(!).
The only chance to get the disk out of the drive seems to be a reboot of
 the ThinClient.
Can you confirm this behaviour? (Is someone working on a solution
 already?)
Which daemon/mechanism mounts the disk automatically when
inserted? (supermount or autofs should do the job.)

 Thanks in advance!

I would also like to know if there is a way to resolve this. Is it a bug as

I've shearched a lot before sending this mail but I never found anything
about that subject. It's alwaye the same problem : How to connect a
smart card reader (ACR 38U of Zetes) with rdesktop on a W7 VDI  ?.

The solution comes with rdesktop 1.7 and openthinclient 1.0 but the
daemon pcscd must run on the thin client. So how to start it
automatically or how to configure the thinclient in the manager ?

It's really blocking, without that functionnality, I can not implement
openthinclient that has a lot of promisses !

Hi folks. My use case for the Openthinclient is for a situation where a
pool of machines are used by people who are not on the whole
knowledgeable about computers but where there may be the odd hacker
 pretending to be something else.

Openthinclient is attractive because I can PXE boot the user's machines
from a server that they can't get near and I can make sure there is
nothing deployed to the machines which allows them to attack the server.
However, I have noticed that, in my current temporary configuration, the
command history for the terminal is being remembered between sessions.
This implies that the profile is being kept between sessions, which I
don't want (as the next session may be a different user).

I will be most grateful if someone would please advise how to get a
clean profile at the start of every session.

Re: [openthinclient-user] dhcp

2013-05-18 Thread Stecher, Alexander
Usually you don't have to set the option 66 and 67 on the DHCP Server. The
DHCPproxy functionality from the openthinclient server can handle this -
like describted above.
However, please try to change/set in the - environment - start option -
PXE service

It is usually set to auto, but you can change it manually.
Restart the openthinclient-service and try it.

 Hi,

That configuration is better if you what to migrate, of course, because
your openthiclient apliance doesn't depend on Windows AD. Good news for you.
The best solution, If you don't know details about the inherited
infraestructure, is allways migrating to 1.0 version.
The problem are the LDAP users of the openthinclient: you will need to
make a backup of the LDAP and then restore that backup on the
openthinclient infraestructure again when you upgrade to 1.0 version.
Tell me, do you have any kind of specific package developed for
openthinclient? If the answer is affirmative, you will need to backup the
openthinclient packages too, just to be able to install them on your new
 server.
The virtual server for the openthinclient appliance is inside windows 2008
server? under a vmware workstation? this is completly not recomended!
VSphere would be a great solution instead.

 Regards,
 Miguel

 2013/7/11 jtra...@comcast.net

 I believe the version is 0.45, I know it's not 1.0. It's not virtualized
as it's running on a Windows 2008 server and based on what I found the
virtualized appliance runs on Linux. LDAP is just under openthinclient so
it's not tied to our Microsoft AD.

It's listening on port 10389. I inherited the system and I'm trying to

address some security concerns found in a penetration test. We are using

The only service that I see that is related is the one titled

for? The only service that is set to automatic that is not running is
 related to Sophos.

 Hi Jason,

It seems like the manager is not up and running. Did you checked if the
service is up and running? maybe a netstat -ano helps there too, just to
know if the server is listening on the socket...

From where are you connecting your thinclients? Java? Thinclient through
 pxe boot?
It's extrange that the login page shows and the AD fails... Are you
using openthinclient realm or you are using a MS one?

 Regards,
 Miguel

 2013/7/11 jtra...@comcast.net

Not sure what happened, at one point I was able to connect from my
workstation to the manager and then to the Realm, but now I'm unable to
from my workstation and from the server itself. The information page to
log on comes up, we are not connected to our AD, I enter the password and
click next and nothing happens, almost like it's not recognizing that
 next was clicked.

I thought it might be because my workstation was running Java 7.25 so I
downgraded back to 7.21 and the problem still exists. Last night we
rebooted the server and still the same problem. Our thin clients are still
working, I just can't get in to manage anything. Any help or suggestions
 would be great.

 Thanks
 Jason

2013/9/6 Steffen Hönig s.hoe...@openthinclient.com

  Hello,

my name is Steffen Hönig, and I'm developer and project manager with
 openthinclient.com.
We are in the midst of a transition to a new, Debian based userland.

While our customers feedback suggests the graphical Java component - the
so-called “openthinclient Manager” helps people ease their administrational
everyday life, the aging client software (openthinclient OS) needs an
 overhaul to say the least.

Hence we are looking for more than updating a bunch of packages, kernels
 and so on.

*We ask you to be part of the new release from the very beginning!*
We look for people who'd like to volunteer for openthinclient OS on
several levels. It's kind of an experiment for us too, but if you are a(n)

-

administrator, hunting for bugs as soon there is an installer packages
available
 -

developer, feeling at home with *bash* or *python* scripts
 -

technically interested user

*Then we'd like to invite you being a part of the new openthinclient OS
 project.*

To take part you might choose one of the following actions:

-

upload proposals for stuff that should be implemented
 -

take part as a developer sending in patches or even ready-made packages
 -

*write* articles on our *wiki *(soon tba!)*
*
 -

general community: work as a moderator on the mailing list

Our first goals in the course of the next few weeks is to rebuild the
openthinclient OS environment with the help of the LINBO building
environment build by Klaus Knopper (knopper.net). Next to a Debian 7
(Wheezy) core the userland will be made of a custom kernel/initrd package
and several python scripts to boot the clients via PXE and mount the
userland images via NFS. The main goal will be to bring as much of
functionality of our release back to be at least on par with the current
 feature set as possible.

Re: [openthinclient-user] JAva Update

2013-10-02 Thread Stecher, Alexander
If you mean the Java version 7.25 problem we are still working on it.
The last running version is Java 7.21

But if you want to help to find a solution you can do the following:
- install eclipse
- open eclipse and install the git-plugin
- load the sources from
https://github.com/openthinclient/openthinclient-suite
- to debug you have to install the suite and start the Manager via webstart
(starting from eclipse doesn't reproduce the java-error)
javaws -J-Xdebug -J-Xnoagent
-J-Xrunjdwp:server=y,transport=dt_socket,address=debug-Port,suspend=y
machine on which the manager is running:8080/console/launch.jnlp
note: debug-Port is the port you can chose in eclipse to connect remote to
the virtual machine.

Best regards.

Hello Michael,

You wrote the client comes up after 20-30 minutes.
This could be a problem with the name-resolution.

Check, if the machine with the openthinclient-service is correct set in
your DNS. Please also check the reverse entry.

Regards.

  Hi,

I have been testing the OpenThinClient Appliance for a while, but keep
getting stuck when PXE Booting my Client.

 ** **

Getting the pxelinux image works well. The GUI comes up, displaying it’s
progress, but then at “Building TCOS base config” it stalls.

 ** **

Eventually it returns to the console, still displaying that it’s trying to
 build the TCOS base config.

 ** **

After 5-10 minutes it continues, bringing up a black Xorg screen, with
 only the courser showing.

 ** **

Here it can stay for 20-30 minutes before finally bringing up the Desktop.

 ** **

 ** **

I have tried using the .jar file on a windows platform – here the problem
 isn’t present.

 ** **

 ** **

A couple of things I’ve noticed on the Virtual Appliance:

 ** **

**- **The “PXE Clients” container isn’t populated when an
 unknown Client tries to boot.

 **- **The folder
 /opt/openthinclient/server/default/data/nfs/home is empty

 ** **

 ** **

When using the .jar edition unknown clients would show up in PXE Clients
with their MAC address, and the NFS-Share Home folder would contain a
standard user-profile in a folder named after the MAC Address.

 ** **

The Virtual Appliance is running inside VirtualBox 4.2.18 (Tried with both
Win XP and Win 7 – with the Firewall disabled).

 ** **

 ** **

My initial thought is that the NFS-Share isn’t available – but I don’t
know where to look, nor what to check.

 Any ideas?

Re: [openthinclient-user] change pc name

2013-11-22 Thread Stecher, Alexander
Hello Thomas,

please describe the problem more detailed.
Isn't the manager able to connect to the realm?
Or shows the branch in the realm something like can't init directory ?

Changing the hostname is usually no problem. But after you have changed the
hostname, you have to restart the openthinclient service and then restart
the openthinclient manager.
Did you restart it?

By the way: Please ensure that the DNS is working. Check if the new
hostname is correct set in your DNS, also the reverse (PTR) setting!

P.S.: The hint from Andreas is good - for data backup, you should
anyway periodically
make a LDIF export.

  Hello,

maybe as a Workaround: Make a Backup of your Configuration

Open the OpenThinClient Manager and rightclick on Primary directory
 view to select

- Export LDIF

now choose a directory to store your backup

Uninstall the Manager an install it again. Then

It is also possible to import the backup again with

- Import LDIF

But when I change the pc name of the open thin client server then the update

Do I have to change some config file or so? As I see in the log, I think the
reason is that the old name is still in the database.

2014-02-11 1:18 GMT+01:00 Hoffman, Shawn shoff...@redmtn.com:

I have 6 PAR Tech POS terminals I am trying to make diskless thin clients.
I have one in a test environment I was able to get booting with PXE. It
works great with a mouse and keyboard plugged into the USB ports. It has an
integrated Elo touchscreen and I cannot get that to work. I am using the
Minerva version of the server and it has a device list. From what I
understand in the documentation I need to add that touch screen in the
devices and assign it to these terminals. I cannot find out how to do that.
Is there somewhere to download a prepackaged device to load in there? The
documentation for the touchscreen at openthinclient.org says to log into
a terminal as root. How is one supposed to do that? I hit the Ctrl+Alt+F1
and get the terminal. I type root and it asks for a password. I just leave
it blank and it says incorrect password. I tried the user accounts I set up
in the server both user and admin accounts those say incorrect user as
well. Is there some kind of default root account in the system somewhere?
I would really appreciate some advice on this. I love open source and
really want this to work. Thanks

2014-02-26 Thread Stecher, Alexander
Did you register the openthinclient-virtual-appliance in the DNS (note:
also reverse)?

If yes, did you change the server-name?
The default is openthinclient-server.
If you change the default-server-name in your DNS, you have to change it in
/etc/hostname
/etc/hosts
too.

Best regards.

Re: [openthinclient-user] password

2014-03-04 Thread Stecher, Alexander
The default screensaver from Debian is the problem.

Please install the package desktop with the package-management.
Add an application called desktop, and set the screen-saver to explicit
no.
Join this application with all thinclients and reboot them.
Now the password should be disabled.

We know the problem and we'll fix it with the next update.
Then the default (without any configuration) would be: no password

Re: [openthinclient-user] PXE-policy Service Any Client

If you changed the setting to any PXE client, you have to restart the
openthinclient service.
Add a new thinclient in the openthinclient-manager, and fill in the
MAC-adress 00:00:00:00:00:00
Then configure this client and add e.g. the rdesktop application.

Good luck.

We only support them furthermore for customers with a support-contract.

If you need a special driver in this versions, you have to setup a

New features for Consus will be announced step by step.

  Hi alexander,

 Found this on the internet

But I am new to linux and I don’t know how add it to the openthinclient

 · Using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. 64bit. Get the driver files from here:
 https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/sis

The xorg drivers you can install in ubuntu software center won’t give you
anything higher than 1024×768 as it fails to recognize the SIS671 chipset
and falls back to the stock framebuffer.
Put the two binary files in the tarball from the site above, sis671_drv.so
and sis671_drv.la where the page above describes. Be sure to get the
correct package for 32bit vs 64bit to match the version of ubunty you are
running. Thus, I used the files in sis-64-bit-1204.tar.gz

Don’t use the xorg.conf contained in the tarball, or if you do, it may not
work. It didn’t for me, and just hung. If it does don’t forget you can open

 Please try to use Consus.

 Consus supports dual-screen.

 To add a driver:
 - setup a build environment
 - compile it in the kernel

 - if needed, some libraries have also to be updated

If it does don’t forget you can open
a console with Ctrl+Alt+F1 and login and copy / remove the xorg.conf and

Change the PXE-Service from Auto to SingleHomedBroadcasePXEService

Then restart the openthinclient-service.

Do not add the client manual with its MAC.

irgendeine DHCP Optionen. Der OTCS Server bezieht einfach auch seine
 Adresse über DHCP.

Aktuell Win2008R2 als DHCP Server. Es funktioniert aber auch unter WIn2003
 und einer simplen Fritzbox .

 Hi all,

Ok so i was suggested by Alexander to use Consus since that was
supported.. so im thinking more of you out there would use it and can help
 perhaps even Alexander himself!! :)

I fear using consus for my T5540 that i have allready run into a show
 stopper

so i did what I do in the old system.. PXE boot a thin client to make it
show in the manager and than edit it and put it in thin clients folder..

 I only gave it

 Device: keyboard DK

 Device: Monitor 1440*900

 no application...

when it starts to boot it do load the image from PXE but throws the error:

 ip: SIOCGIFFLAGS: no such device

 udhcpc: SIOCGIFFLAGS was called

No /bin/bash found - dropping busybox sh.

sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

and than some more stuff i don't think is needed?

anyone has any suggestions? Have you guys changed the way PXE/DHCP should
be setup with consus? in my enviroment i have a DHCP on another server...
and it worked fine with Minerva...its setup up with option 66 pointing to
the ip of the server running my manager...

Or maybe Consus doesn't have network drivers for my T5540 HP device?

I couldn't find and doku besides the one i used for my Minerva install so
I assume it should be the same?

I discovered your fantastic project recently and I am implementing for
replace an enviroment formed by 90 stations ThinStation and 7 locations.

I have been testing Minerva, Ceres and Consus and I have decided to
implement Consus because of hardware compatibility

 Now the questions:

 1. Is there anyway to define new language (Spanish in my case) to use it
in locations definition? Now, I can only select German and English
variations. I would like my users will see Spanish OTC-Login, OTC-Desktop
 and OTC-Menus

 2. Is there anyway to disable Autologon for new devices in Consus? I have
tested in Minerva and Ceres connected to Secondary LDAP (my Active
 Directory Domain) and runs perfectly.

 3. I have downloaded tcos-dev, I have created Firefox package and I have
deployed correctly to the server. Where can I disable default explorer
 message pop-up?

 4. We have Clientron U720 with Via VX855/VX875 Chrome 9 Integrated
Graphics. They have one VGA and DVI ports. I have test all posible
combinations in dual display device (DVI, DVI1, VGA0, VGA1, etc). In all of
them, VGA is showed correctly, but DVI is desktop cloned VGA, not extended
desktop. Furthermore it seems to have some refresh rate problem. Any help?

 Thanks in advance.

Re: [openthinclient-user] password

2014-04-14 Thread Stecher, Alexander
You have to discard the tcos-branding.
But before that, you have to update the base-package.
This means:
- update the base package
- delete the tcos-branding
- install the desktop application

Important:
If you want to update the package openthinclient-manager, then update it
alone, not together with other packages.

Another way is:
- make a LDIF-export.
- deinstall the openthinclient-software
- download the current version
- install it new
- LDIF import.

Then select from the pulldown-list persistant home on NFS and save this
device.
Then combine it to the Thinclient or to the Hardwaretype.
Reboot the client.

Now you can e.g. add bookmarks in the iceweasel, or save e.g. documents on

Good luck, and give this mailinglist a feedback, if it works correctly?

 Thnx for your answer.

I am using auto-logon. When I add something on the desktop of this
auto-login user (when I boot a thinclient), it doesn't seem to be

Is it possible to make this change persistent or add this desktop-starter

It would be very user-friendly if there was some kind of application (like
firefox in minerva/ceres) that you could add to a client or a user, and in
which you could define what the startpage is etc... is this very difficult to
create. If not, I would give it a try, but I don't know where to start.

 Hi Steve,

there is no configurable desktop application as of yet, but you may define
 a custom desktop file (
 http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest/apa.html) and
copy it via the custom folder logic to your desktop folder
/home/tcos/Desktop... It may or may not work, depending on your usecase
(autologin vs. ldap etc pp). Otherwise deal with it, and explain it to your
 users.

2014-10-17 Thread Stecher, Alexander
Hallo Herr Mayer,

please check whether the application automatic login is created and assigned
to the thinclients - or even better - assigned to the hardware types.

 Hello,

I had to reinstall openthinclient. I imported the LDIF File. The clients
are there, but when they boot the autologin doesn't work.

I created a new Client - same Problem.

 Hallo,

[openthinclient-user] openthinclient: Lizenz für professionelle Anwendungen / License for professional applications

2014-11-11 Thread Stecher, Alexander
== Englisch Version below ==

Mitteilung von openthinclient:

* Lizenzpflichtige Pakete

* Unterscheidung freie Version

* Kunden mit Supportvertrag

== Englisch version ==

Notification of openthinclient:

* Licensed packages

We have changed our license policy: software packages for the enterprise
environment are no longer without license fees.

Since the development of such professional software packages is both time
and work consuming, we decided to exclude them from our management under
GPL 2.

This new policy applies to openthinclient software such as launchers and
xml patterns to launch Citrix Clients version 13, VMware Horizon version 6
, IBM i-Series-Access and SAPgui and others, as well as various devices and
drivers, for example for the support of Cherry EGK readers.

In the future we will deploy these openthinclient-packages to our customers
for a one-time license fee. The license fee will be determined according to
the locations, server instances and number of ThinClients.

* Distinction: free version

Most of our customers will not be affected by the changes. The
openthinclient-server component, the openthinclient-manager, and the
openthinclient-OS as well as numerous software packages will stay open and
license free. You will still be able to download, use, and adapt them in
accord with GPL 2.

We have chosen the word open in our name for a reason: we support
OpenSource software and embrace its philosophy. Our source code is openly
available, we publish patches regularly, and we supply extensive
development tools.

* Customers with support contract

If you choose, you can also enter a support contract with us, which entails
qualified reaction times and includes the license fees for professional
apps.

  Hello,

I have moved onward with everything... made rdesktop 1.8.3 and pscs-lite
1.8.13 for my dev-site but it seems that it did not work as I have expected.

Don't get me wrote, but application working properly. I have even updated
schema, so I can add smart card with an option in menu etc... after all it is
 kinda easy.

But I have problems with Smartcard reader from REINER SCT - Cyberjack
e-com plus which does not simply work even with its own drivers, that are
provided on web-site. I was trying older rdesktop aswell as the new one I
have made, same for pcsc-lite including latest drivers from Reiner...

RDP destination is Windows 2008 R2 SP1 with Reiner SCT SW installed.

On mini client everything works as expected, remote desktop works, USB
support works, but when I do test of card reader then everything is fine,
but I do not see attributes of card in card reader. On thin-client pcscd
does see the card and reader.. pcsc_scan confirms that everything works as
expected, but on server side ... attributes of card gets lost (reader itself
shows just fine, SW reacts on card being in reader or not). How come? Is it
common problem of REINER SCT - Cyberjack e-com or is it another problem?

 Thank you in advance.

Re: [openthinclient-user] Old packages - any help whatsoever?

2015-03-19 Thread Stecher, Alexander
Hello Henry,

1) yes, the project is alive.
I don´t see any answers since year 2015 - I think, it is currently 2015
;-)
Please have a look at
http://archive.openthinclient.org/openthinclient/
for example.

2) our current rdesktop package is V1.8.2, this is the quite new, it is
only one newer version available.

3) If you want to build own packages, have a look here:
https://wiki.openthinclient.org/confluence/display/DOO/Entwicklersektion
(currently only in German available)

4) The openthinclient company can assist you with configuration,
customization, education.
This service is with charge.
http://openthinclient.com/service/?lang=en

Or you can use the free service, this is the mailing-list.
The mailinglist is a free comunity-tool, you don't have a guarantee, that
your questions will be answered.

Regards.

hopefully they will be ever answered...

 1) Is this project even alive? I don´t see any answers since year
2015. I am trying to make some breakthrough in using OTC but without help I
will be probably damned - already playing with it for almost 2 weeks.

 2) Will there be new packages for rdesktop or smart-card lite ... (or
well pcsc-lite) which are out and are actually improving something..?

 3) Is there a way to get explained how to make something which comes
in tar.bz2 to be tcos/deb file... I am kinda trying to learn it all, but it
is hard when I am getting into linux stuff for 11days (even that I think I
 have made great progress)

 4) I could even assist with helping community if I would get more
information how to actually work with OTC in general and would be able to
create something valuable... But without answers, I can hardly get more far
 than I am.

I am kind of sad that I see such a project being frozen in time..

Hopefully I will have some answers from someone...

 Thank you

2015-04-13 Thread Stecher, Alexander
First update all packages.

Start the client without a special setting.
Usually the client starts with a desktop.
Then open a shell.
Type in:

xrandr -q

Then the name of the display-connection would be shown.
Create a device display with this connection-type and assign it to the
thinclient.

Re: [openthinclient-user] Pakete aktualisieren

2016-02-12 Thread Stecher, Alexander

Re: [openthinclient-user] No clients under "PXE clients"

2016-03-11 Thread Stecher, Alexander
It seems to be a network or a firewall problem.
What operating system do you use for the openthinclient-server?
Did you install it in a windows environment, if yes, deactivate the windows
firewall.
Or do you use the virtual appliance?
The network interface must run in bridge-mode.

Re: [openthinclient-user] Pales - Test in VMWare Workstation - Clients nur schwarzer Bildschirm

2016-03-09 Thread Stecher, Alexander
Hallo Herr Mayer,

Re: [openthinclient-user] Anzeigeprobleme Freerdp / Nummbernblock

2016-08-15 Thread Stecher, Alexander
Hallo Herr Nesselraht,

gewissen Mehrleistungen an.
rasant.
Unterstützung in Aussicht stellen.

Langer Rede kurzer Sinn:
openthinclient.org-OpenSource Projekt mitzuwirken.
