Re: January PUG is up

2023-01-06 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks once again, Brian, for keeping the PUG rollin' on!

A fairly large gallery, at 17 images, full of excellent work. I'm glad
that I didn't use my Shaky Bridge image, but made it a PESO instead, as
there are several similar wooden bridge images in the gallery, all better
than mine. Likewise with my image of the bridges over the East River, as
there are several better images of familiar urban bridges in the collection.

My favorite of this month's PUG is "The Way Forward," by Paul Stenquist. I
like the rendering of the colors and the effective composition, and, of
course, it's always nice to see
gracie!

Jan van Wijk gets my vote for the most inventive interpretation of the
theme, and it's a compelling image in its own right.

Rick Womer's rendering of the Charles Bridge at night is simply gorgeous,
and brings back fond memories of our trip to Prague. Henk's image of the
same bridge is full of humor and color, and conveys a strong sense of place.

Ann's Zakim Bridge is outstanding for the compelling geometry and
composition.

I am impressed by "Pont de Normandie"by Filip Nicolaï. That is a
magnificent structure, which I tried to capture a few years back, without
the kind of success Filip has had. Great work!

All of the images are pleasing and effective, and I congratulate all the
submitters on the quality of their work. This is one of the things I love
about this group.

I like Lennox Bridge the most out of this gallery. The very organic
stone arch rising out of the forest floor is elegant in it's quiet

This is the largest PUG collection we’ve had in a while, and also one of the
best. There is such a variety of interpretations of the “Bridge” theme that
it’s hard to select favorites. Jan’s interpretation is certainly the most
unusual, though; and since I have a grown daughter Paul’s is a sentimental
favorite.

Re: January PUG is up

2021-01-13 Thread Rick Womer
Ann, we’re very much still in Philly (here since 1982). Before Philly, I
lived in Cleveland, New Haven, Rochester (college and med school),
Charlottesville, and London.

We had more wintry winters in all of those places than we’re having so far
this year.

2021-01-12 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks again, Brian, for keeping the PUG going and thus helping to keep
this group together!

It is indeed a nice little gallery, with a good variety of approaches to
the theme. My favorite is "Little Spectacular Lightning," by Reinhard Sy,
Not only is the capture of the lightning dramatic and pleasing, but the
overall minimalism of the composition grabs my attention and highlights the
drama of the lightning. I also like Ann's image, which so well captures
the feeling of snow in The
City, and Pete Mcintosh's "Ocean Sunset," since I have so often attempted
similar shots.

Most of the other shots in the gallery were of storms that were very

PJ and Dan made me wish I were  where they took theirs at that

Beautiful but ominous at the same time.

QUestion for Matt about the lightening shot.. was that a combo of two

there are more lighting strikes in Florida than any other location in

My favourites, in no particular order: P.J.'s Ice Storm, Daniel's

Snow Storm, Paul's Fog (though there's usually either storm or fog),
and

Annsan's City Snow, mainly because we haven't had any decent snow here

All the rest are great as well, of course.

shopping, doing everything we don't have time for during a normal
working week, and having our day off.

The car looks like a rolling mud heap but there's no point in having it
washed.

The forecast around here is for unseasonably warm weather bringing hurricane
force winds, torrential rain, flash floods & hail the size of baseballs

or else it's going to snow. They haven't made up their minds yet.

My favourites, in no particular order: P.J.'s Ice Storm, Daniel's Spring
Snow Storm, Paul's Fog (though there's usually either storm or fog), and
Annsan's City Snow, mainly because we haven't had any decent snow here
in almost a decade.

All the rest are great as well, of course.

Having never really been cold or encountered much snow, it is hard for
me to appreciate the snow scenes which appear to be either devastating

Not in camera. The camera was on a tripod shooting continuously for
the duration of the storm (resulting in hundreds of exposures), and I
cherry-picked the two best frames and merged them in Photoshop. The
camera was on the covered balcony of our vacation condo (10th floor)
and I was able to spend most of the time inside.

Re: January PUG is up

2020-01-08 Thread Scott Loveless
Verruh nas! A few of my favorites:

Matt's Destin Thunderstom is quite dramatic. Very nicely done.
Patrick's Stormy Clarens. This seems to impart feelings of strife and
melancholy.
Brian's Storm Approaching. I really like the composition and the
contrast in the sky. I only wish the foreground was a bit more
illuminated.
Rick's Squall Line. This may be my favorite-est. My only possible
complaint is the swimming platform should have been closer. But I
understand why Rick didn't want to wade out there right at that
moment...

That's a great gallery this month - so well done - great shots everyone.
Particularly liked Peter Alling's 'Ice Storm', Matthew Hunt's 'Destin
Thunderstorm', Patrick Nelson's 'Stormy Clarens', and Rick Womer's Squall Line'
- but again, all the rest of such great quality as well.

Inspirational each and every one!

All good! Thanks again for your efforts Brian. I also like the mood in
Patrick’s image. And I quite like the lines in Subash’s monsoon shot, the beach
in the foreground works well.
Ann’s snowfall shot puts me right into a situation I have been many times; I
am so happy to have retired and so can just hibernate when faced with such
conditions! Great image, not so great memories.

That is a very fine gallery indeed!

I agree; Matthew Hunt's "Destin Thunderstorm" is electrifying and
dramatic. The Pick of the litter.

I also love the quiet minimalism of "Foggy Morning" by Paul Stenquist and
the frigid atmosphere of AnnSan's "City Snow."

Thanks for the comment.

Crowds will depend on the time of the year and if the salmon are running.
Even given some crowds, you should be able to figure out when the
observation deck is not crowded - just be flexible with your timing. Last
time I was there, the rangers were limiting the number of people on the
deck. If the salmon are running, down river will most likely be void of
bears.

We’ll be going back North in 2020, it is too early to book but I have been
looking at a 2-3 night lodge stay at Brooks Falls…
Even though the prime spots at the upper falls will likely be crowded, I
may get a little time there early or late in the day, plus along the river
further down. We’ll see. Meanwhile I have your shot fine Ken and others of
that genre to study and get my anticipation up!

I understand that Katmai is visited alot more now then when you were
there. I've heard there are now comercial outfits bringing in tourists
for the day, making it alot more crowded. On my two visits the only way
to economically visit was to sign up for a package deal including a
couple of night stay at the lodge - there was no comercial outfits
offering day trips.

The January PUG is disappointingly small. but it includes some very fine
images indeed.

My favorite is Fishin with the Guys by Ken Waller. I was at that very
spot, at Brooks Falls, about 25 years ago. Like Ken, I was hoping for
that
classic shot of a salmon jumping into the mouth of a brown bear; like
him,

I was disappointed. In any event, this photo is a very pleasing and
evocative rendition of an unforgettable place and event.

My second favorite is Which Is My Cap? by Henk Terhell. The repeating
pattern is hypnotic, and the result is quite effective in every respect.

Re: January PUG is up

2019-01-07 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
The January PUG is disappointingly small. but it includes some very fine
images indeed.

My favorite is Fishin with the Guys by Ken Waller. I was at that very
spot, at Brooks Falls, about 25 years ago. Like Ken, I was hoping for that
classic shot of a salmon jumping into the mouth of a brown bear; like him,
I was disappointed. In any event, this photo is a very pleasing and
evocative rendition of an unforgettable place and event.

My second favorite is Which Is My Cap? by Henk Terhell. The repeating
pattern is hypnotic, and the result is quite effective in every respect.

Think I've seen Ann's Broome before. Very nice.

Ken's is, of course, beautiful. And Jorge's Giant Shadow is very
interesting, partly because it's an unusual and interesting statute. You
have to look twice to realize the man kneeling in front is another statue.

The one I got the biggest kick out of was Touch Down by Brian. It hasn't
landed yet, and the shadow looks like a toy plane.

Jeez, I enjoy the PUG! Thanks Brian, and everyone who submitted.

My favorites this month are Annsan's (texture, composition, some
irony), Marco's (great composition and rendering, and a pun!) and
Malcolm's (I'm always a sucker for interesting geometry).

My faves list is too long, but my faves-of-the-faves would be Ann's

Bulent's Footsteps, and Wendy's This Way.

Way to go, us! :)

It's a really good gallery. I'm not going to pick any favourites in case ann
gets big-headed.

I don't normally like 'abstract' photography because a) it's never abstract and
b) it's normally just a case of 'can you tell what this extreme close-up is?',
for this gallery I'll make a rare exception.

Re: January PUG now up!

2015-01-11 Thread Darren Addy
Loved Wendy's This Way and Rick Womer's Berlin Flats and Filip
Nicolaï's Reading Between the Lines. All are just SUPERB.

Ken Waller's Colorado's Sand Box is a superb image, but the figures
in the bottom take it out of the abstract realm, for me.

Honorable mentions to:
Christine Aguila's At the Car Wash even though I thought the image
was more intriguing until I read the giveaway title.
Ann Sanfedele's Framed, although I think I would have liked it
better if Ann had chosen her own framing, rather than including the
duct tape frame in the image. That took it out of the abstract realm
and into a recording of someone else's abstract composition, to me.
 Don Guthrie's Frozen. Neat idea.
Pat Temmerman North Beach the image out of the gallery that I would
be most likely to enjoy on my living room wall. Very peaceful.

Nice gallery, ALL!

Re: January PUG is up - it's cold outside....

2014-01-12 Thread Attila Boros
I like A Cold Walk, the snowy trees gave it a nice winter
atmosphere, and the walkers are captured at the perfect moment. I like
to walk in the snow, but this winter is unusually dry here.

Iced Purple Sand Cherry, Needles of Ice and This Cold BUD for
You, are very good graphic representations of the theme, although
that's a bit more cold than I like:)

A great gallery to kick off 2014.

As usual it's hard to pick favourites but maybe Thrainn's 'Horses in Winter'
and Jan's 'Too Cold for Comfort'.

Interesting that Ann and Phillip both submitted shots taken on film and both
 used the KX.

As usual, you'll find the gallery here:

Iced Purple Sand Cherry by Bruce Walker
A Slice of Cold by Don Guthrie
Needles of Ice by Frank Theriault
Ice on the Rocks by Matthew Hunt

Many thanks to all the contributors :)

Absolutely brilliant gallery! I was going to rattle off a few of my
favourites but I genuinely enjoyed them all - fabulous job to all.

Very inspiring - I haven't shot anything decent in ages - makes me want
to pick up the cameras and head out the door.

Will be able to on Weds when we're popping to Oxford to meet up with
Mark and Lisa for a few hours - so looks like some street photography in
order!
